    Maglev trains

    A few countries

    are using

    powerfulelectromagnets

    to develop high-

    speed trains,called maglev

    trains.

    Traveling atspeeds of up to

    310 mph (500kph), maglevtrains could

    begin

    connectingdistant cities in

    a few years.

    How it works.

    A maglev trainfloats about

    10mm abovethe guide way

    on a magnetic

    field.

    It is propelled

    by the guide

    way itself ratherthan an onboard

    engine by

    changingmagnetic fields.

    How it works cont

    Once the train

    is pulled into

    the nextsection the

    magnetism

    switches sothat the train is

    pulled on again.

    The Electro-

    magnets run the

    length of theguide way.

    Advantages?

Well it soundshigh-tech, afloating train, they do offercertain benefitsoverconventionalsteel rail onsteel wheelrailways.

    The primary

    advantage is

    maintenance.

    Advantages? Cont

    Because thetrain floats

along there isno contactwith theground and

    therefore noneed for anymoving parts.

    As a result

    there are no

    componentsthat would

    wear out.

    Advantages? Cont

    In theory,thismeans, trains

    and trackwould need nomaintenanceat all.

    Note thatthere is stillair resistance.

    The second

    advantage is

    that becausemaglev trains

    float, there is

    no friction.

    Advantages? Cont

    A third

    advantage is

    less noise. Because there

    are no wheels

    running alongthere is no

    wheel noise.

    However

    noise due to

    airdisturbance

    still occurs

    while the trainis in motion.

    Advantages? Cont

    The finaladvantage is

    speed. As a result of

the threeprevious listedit is more viablefor maglevtrains to travel

    extremely fast

    i.e. 500km/h or300mph.

Although thisis possiblewithconventionalrail it is noteconomicallyviable.

    Advantages? Cont

    Ah-ha tricked ya!There is one

    more advantage. Another

advantage is thatthe guide waycan be made alot thicker inplaces.

    E.g. after stationsand going uphill,

Which would meana maglev couldget up to 300kmh(186mph) in only

    5km wherecurrently takes18km.

    Advantages? Cont

    Also greater

    gradients

    would beapplicable.

    O.k I mean it

    now this was

    the last one.
