Gray Tigers Split Pairby Mike ZellmannThe Belle Plaine Gray Tigers

(over 35) baseball team lost to Minnetonka 7-1 on Friday and came back to win against St. Peter 6-5 on Sunday. The Gray Tigers will host

waconia on wednesday night at 7:30 and Searles Bullheads on Sunday afternoon at 2:00.

Minnetonka 7, Tigers 1The Tigers found out why

Minnetonka’s record was 13-2. Shane Hofmann was on the hill against a very solid lineup but would battle his way through six innings. A few unearned runs in the first and the Lakers were out of the gates. The Belle Plaine bats were

active but many balls were hit right at Minnetonka. They mus-tered just five hits. The only run was scored by Randy Stender on a double by Eric Burgemeis-ter. And yes, he did score all the way from first on a double. The that would be the only run of the night for the Grays.

Tigers 6, St. Peter 5St. Peter came to town with a

full dugout looking to derail the Tigers, but Belle Plaine pitcher Dave Kreft had other plans. He would battle through a few unearned runs as the Tiger de-fense struggled in the first few innings, giving up a couple of unearned runs. But on this day the Grays

would be a beneficiary of a high popup that could not be

caught by the St. Peter short-stop from Brandt vinkemeier to score two runs in the third. A RBI single by Shane Hofmann in the fourth would bring the score to 3-1. But some miscues on the field would find the Ti-gers down at the end of the fifth by the score of 4-3.St. Peter would tack on one

more run in the seventh to make it 5-3 going into the final frame of the seventh. with the top of the order up, Burgemeister, Phil wulf and Kreft coaxed walks out of the St. Peter pitcher to bring up the hot-hitting vinke-meier. He would hit a towering shot to center that cleared the center fielder’s head and went all the way to the flag poles to score three Tigers for the walk-off win.

Gray Tigers Baseball

Clayton Meyer returned from parts unknown to throw the next 3.1 innings, while Josh Ter-rio threw the final 2.2 frames. Terrio also led the Tigers of-fensively, going 2-for-4 with a double. The Tigers did most of their

damage in the first inning, get-ting five singles in a row and plating three runs. But it was not enough as Belle Plaine came out on the wrong end of an 8-4 final score. The Tigers did hold former

Tiger Ryan Diers hitless on the day (editor’s note: Diers went 0-for-0 with three walks and a sacrifice fly).

Tigers 18, Arlington 0when this game was sched-

uled over the winter, it was looked at as a tune-up game before the Region 6C playoffs, as it would not count towards the RvL standings. The Tigers broke out with 17 hits, with one player getting fine-tuned in providing a performance for the ages.Seventh-year player Dylan

Nyberg went 4-for-4 with three

home runs and eight RBI, in-cluding a sacrifice fly and four runs scored. In the second in-ning, Nyberg clubbed a two-run shot to left field. In the third he put another one over the vines, driving home three. Nyberg merely singled while driving one run home in the fourth in-ning – Belle Plaine’s second consecutive six-run frame. In the fifth inning, Nyberg put

his name in the Tiger record book by belting his third long ball of the day, a solo shot. Sev-eral remembered lefty Adam Johnson clubbing three taters at St. Benedict a few years ago – it was July 9, 2011, to be exact.Consulting with Tiger histo-

rians – Tom Melchior, Gerry Meyer and Fred Keup – the only other three home-run game in Tigertown lore was Bob O’Brien at Le Center versus Lonsdale in September 1948. The crowd that day was 2,200. A few weeks later, BP appeared in its first state title game, los-ing 6-4 to winsted.Due to the Tiger drubbing and

the 10-run rule, the sixth inning

would be Nyberg’s final at-bat – albeit with the bases loaded. With one out, Nyberg hit a fly ball to medium-deep center field; while it was dropped for an error on the fielder, it was deep enough to have scored the run, giving Nyberg a sacrifice fly and an eighth RBI.Ben wagner started on the

hill and worked four scoreless innings, improving his rookie-year record to 3-0. Chase Em-mers, Jonny vinkemeier and wes Sarsland all contributed a scoreless frame as well.Other hitting stars for Belle

Plaine included left fielder Ty-ler Hartman, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a steal. Ter-rio went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs, while Sarsland likewise went 2-for-3, with two walks, two RBI and a double.

Mariena Hayden Selected One of Best Volleyball Players for Her Grade in Country

Belle Plaine High School student Mariena Hayden, who will be a junior this fall, was recently named to the Soph 79 team, meaning she is one of the top 79 volleyball players in the nation for her class. She was also put on the watch list for pre-season All-Americans for this season by the same website (www.prepvolleyball.com).

The 2014 Prepvolleyball.com Soph 79, Presented By Topical

Gear:Mariena Hayden, 6-0 OH,

Belle Plaine (Minnesota) – One of the best sophomores in the nation, Hayden missed the first two-thirds of the 2014 high school season with a back in-jury, but returned to make a tre-mendous impact on the Tigers over the last third.

In 49 sets played, Hayden re-corded 314 kills, 145 digs and 36 aces. with her in the line-up, Belle Plaine surged to the state Class AA tournament and placed third. Over three state-tournament matches compris-ing 14 sets, Hayden amassed 93 kills and 50 digs.

“Mo (Hayden’s nickname) is

an extremely consistent, pow-erful attacker from every posi-tion on the court, including the service line,” said coach Cassie Koch, herself one of Minneso-ta’s great high school attackers. “She has the ability to take over matches, even against the high-est level of competition. She’s working hard each season to improve her defense and is well on her way to being the com-plete package as a 6-rotation outside hitter.”
