Trauma Recovery Program The Trauma Recovery Program is available to adult survivors of childhood trauma (emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, or severe neglect). The program focuses on the present, rather than the past, and teaches skills for more effective daily functioning. Call Trauma Recovery Associates at 269-459-2121 and learn about our free programs.

First Communion Prep There will be two Zoom Meetings for parents and children who will be preparing for First Communion.

Tuesday October 20 6:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. Children in grades 2 and up who have been in the program at least 1 year and are planning to make First Holy Communion in Spring 2021.

Tuesday October 20 7:30 p.m. – 8:15 p.m. Children in grade 1 and up who have not enrolled in the First Holy Communion preparation yet and who are plan-ning to make First Holy Communion in Spring 2022.

Father Jim will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on seven candidates at a special Mass at 1:30 p.m. this Sunday, October 18. Any family mem-

bers who wish to attend MUST have a reservation. The Confirmation Mass will be livestreamed on the St. Basil Facebook page, and we invite all in our parish community to join us via Facebook for this special celebration.

All Confirmation 2021 and 2022 preparation sessions will be online until at least January 2021. The next session for new candidates will be through Zoom on Sunday, October 25, from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. Students in their second year of preparation for the sacrament will meet on Zoom on Sunday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m.

To all adults in the parish: Is God calling you to serve? Do you enjoy being online? Are you VIRTUS-trained, or would you be willing to participate in an online "VIRTUS: Protecting God's Children" training session? Would you be willing to spend an hour once or twice a month interacting with teenage students as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation? During this COVID-19 pandemic, when so many of us feel unsure and unsafe in large groups - even at Mass - we would love to have you join us from the comfort of your home to interact with our candidates, mentor them on their journeys, and provide a virtual "community of faith." BAA 2020—Building Strong Parishes ...and We Are On Our Way!

Did you know that anything raised over $50,829 will be returned to the parish? Did you know that anything the parish receives back will be used to tuckpoint the exterior of the bell tower and the main body of the church building? Currently we have pledges and payments of $66,329.

We need your support to reach the parish goal of $101,637. We have had some special sacramental activity going on lately. One group of young people who have been preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation for the last two years received that Sacrament last weekend. This weekend will see the Confirmation of the other half of the group. Meanwhile, you may

be witnesses of some of the First Communions that have taken place recently or will be happening in the near future. A number of young people are taking these steps to grow in their faith and we support and congratulate them all! These things would normally have taken place last Spring but, well, I guess I don't have to explain why it didn't happen this year!

None of it could have happened at all, of course, if the young people weren't prepared, and so we also need to thank those who prepared them: their parents and their catechists! As we say in the Rite of Baptism, parents are "the first educators of their children in the ways of faith." This doesn't just mean first in time, it also means first in importance, "first place" if you will. Catechists, too, have an important role to play. They build on what the parents have already done and, as is becoming more and more clear lately, can help the parents in their role as providers of their children's fundamental faith formation.

I especially thank Margie Little and Sylvia Verdonk who, with the volunteer catechists they coordinate, have done so much to prepare our young people for a lifetime of faith development. There's much that goes into organizing these things and caring for the kids. What they do isn't always easy, and the results are not always immediately visible, but seeds they help plant have the potential to grow into abundantly good fruit that will benefit the whole world. If you see them, thank them yourself -- and maybe volunteer your help too! Fr. Jim

The agency is running low on the following items for the women and children they serve: winter coats (newborn- 4T), towels for infants, socks for infants (0-12 mo.), pacifiers (newborn - 12 mo.), sleepers and PJs (newborn to 5T), receiving blankets/swaddle blankets, nursing bras.

You may place your purchases in the playpen located in the Connector throughout the month of October.

Our parish office remains closed during the mandated stay-at-home order for Michigan. You may still contact us at 269-637-2404. When you call the office and press our extensions (Andrea, Cecilia, Fr. Jim, and

Charlie) your call will be automatically sent to our personal phones If we don’t answer immediately, your call will be forwarded to a voicemail which we are able to retrieve from home. We remain available for you, just not in the office.

Saint Basil Catholic School is looking for qualified substitute teachers. The candidate should be a certified teacher and/or able to present or acquire a Michigan substitute teacher permit. All substitute teachers must be VIRTUS trained (or willing to become trained) and submit to fingerprinting and a background check.

This week we look at how Merton views the “moral life” of a Christian. He writes, “The sanctity of Christian life is based not on love of an abstract law but on love of the living God, a divine person, Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word of God. And it is based also on the love of our brothers in Christ. Hence, our moral life is not legalistic, not a mere matter of fidelity to duty. It is above all a matter of personal gratitude, of love, and of praise. It is a “Eucharistic“ morality, a code of love based on communal Thanksgiving and appreciation of our life in Christ. Thus, our good works are not done simply in order to satisfy the cold obligation of an impersonal law. They are a personal response of love to the desire of the human heart filled with the divine love for us.”

Winter Coat Collection Our friends at St. Vincent de Paul in Bangor are requesting our help with a collection of outer winter wear for the less fortunate. Gently used coats, hats, mittens for children and

adults are needed, especially men’s and children’s coats. There’s a deposit station in the South Lobby for you to drop off your items. Thank you!

Next Sunday, October 25, our church will participate in the special collection for World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis reminds us of our baptismal call to respond as missionar-ies, saying “Here I am, send me!” Please respond with your support of the priests and religious sisters and broth-ers who provide loving service to those most in need. Envelopes are in the back of church on the bulletin shelves for your convenience.

St. Helena Catholic Church is home to many Vietnamese refugees who arrived in the 1970’s to make Franklin, Louisiana their home. It is a place of prayer and community. Due to the extensive water damage from Hurricane

Laura, the pastor and deacons have had to move out, and services are held outdoors. Deacon John and Martha Lohrstorfer visited the parish last month, and were impressed by the dedication and commitment of the caretaker, Nam, who is trying to keep the community together and rebuild the church.

Please consider helping the small parish by making a financial donation. Checks should be made out to St. Basil Parish, with “St. Helena” in the memo line, and placed in the collection box at Mass or dropped off at the parish office. St. Basil Knights of Columbus will be present at Mass this weekend to accept your donation as well.
