HISTORY
The first discoverer to reach nearby Mercy was the Spanish
missionary Fray Lázaro Guido 1530, which invited the
Indians down to the valley where Sébaco evangelized them.
By 1606 this region reached another Mercy, Friar Juan de
Albuquerque, here possibly the dedication of the church of
San Juan Bautista is due. From 1690, the first Spanish
colonists settled on the side of the people. In 1851 the
village was elevated to town, and in 1883 a city.
This Catholic church was built in the early eighteenth
century, through several alterations to its reconstruction in
1882. In 1952 the priest Alberto Valencia began
construction of a new cathedral building character and
neoclassic style, which was completed in 1958 under the
Ruben direction Baltodano Alfaro priest, on his return from
a trip to Rome, brought the inspiration for the final
architectural details. According to information provided by
the historian and lawyer jinotegano Dr. Sergio Zeledon
Blandon, plans were designed by architect jinotegano
Castellon Don Raul Rivera, opened shortly after the
magnificent building, died in a car accident on the road also
recently opened JM 15 or Matagalpa-Jinotega.
The present cathedral has a valuable collection of religious
art brought from Spain and Italy. The altar is carved in
ebony, mahogany, walnut carving jinotegano cabinetmaker
Luis Lezama structure. In 1954 this altar was replaced with
another Baroque, imported from Germany. An interesting
feature of the cathedral is its unique sound, which could
enhance the sound of any band or choir concert. Also it was
imported from Germany in mid-1960 the mechanical clock
that is in the right tower Cathedral, manufactured by
Friedrich E. Korfhage, Buer district Osnabrück.
