Principal: Kris Peugh My favorite saint is Mary. She has been and continues to be my inspiration as a mother, a source of comfort, faith, and trust in God. One of the reasons that I absolutely love working at St. Patrick’s is because of the staff that I have the privilege working alongside of, in serving the families who entrust their children to our care and instruction.

Kindergarten: Jennifer Henley As a first year kindergarten teacher I feel like my favorite saint answer should be Saint Drogo, the patron Saint of coffee, but in actuality it is Saint Cecilia. St. Patrick’s is our home, our family. I work here, my children go to school here and our family attends church here; it is the entire community that makes me love what I do.

1st Grade: Andrea Mejia Favorite saint is St. Francis. What I love about working at St. Patrick’s is the sense of community and the fact we can bring God and our faith into teaching.

2nd Grade: Madeline Giancola My favorite saint is Blessed Pier Frassati. I love working at St. Patrick’s because it is not just a job but a ministry. I am able to help our children grow as students and Disciples of Christ.

3rd Grade: Maria Etheredge Saint Francis is my favorite saint because of his love for animals. I love working at St. Patrick’s because of the diverse and loving community.

PE & Athletic Director: Freddie Cruz My favorite saint is St. Juan Diego. I love that am part of a team that works together to serve our parish community. I also love to be in a position, (PE/AD) where I see every student from Kindergarten through 8th grade. It is amazing to see from year to year, the spiritual and intellectual growth in each student. Finally, being a witness of God's love. At St. Patrick’s, I see God is at work in my life and the lives of our school community.

5th Grade: Monica Lopez St. Cecilia is my favorite saint because she is the patroness of music. I love working at St. Patrick’s because there is an amazing sense of community here and I have enjoyed seeing that in the hallways during school.

Middle School:

Gabe Campbell My favorite saint is Aloysius Gonzaga. I love working at St. Patrick’s because of the small community and the surrounding area has great Mexican Food!

Mary Valencia Gianna Molla is my favorite saint, because she was able to serve Christ through her family and her profession. I love working at St. Patrick’s, because I love the families and I enjoy serving them.

Judy Turner My favorite saint is Rita of Cassia. I love sharing my faith with students. And having the opportunity to pray with them and see them grow in faith.

Tom Hofmann My favorite saint is St. Francis of Assisi. I'm excited to be teaching at St. Patrick’s, because it is a wonderful opportunity for a holistic approach to learning.

Michele Lumetta My latest favorite saint is St. Antoninus of Florence. I enjoy working at St. Patrick’s School because I want to share my love of math and science with the faith filled youth. St. Patrick’s School also has a wonderful, caring, and hardworking staff that give their best to the students every school day.

4th Grade: Helen Mary Roach-Campbell My favorite saint is the Blessed Virgin Mary because of her courageous faith in the angel's message. I love working at St. Patrick’s because it provides students with a strong sense of community. I also love the shared values of the Catholic faith that students (and teachers) are taught and encouraged to live in the classroom and their relationships.

Administrative Assistant: Jessica Manueles My favorite Saint is Saint Mother Teresa, the Saint of Mercy. St. Patrick School has been my family and stability since 2011 when I came to live in Pasco as a single parent. It is a place my daughter looks forward to coming to learn and be in the presence of classmates she has known since the age of 3, her chosen family. We are blessed to be part of the growing St. Patrick School family.

“We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you… May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit." (Eucharistic Prayer II)

“I believe stewardship is thanksgiving, standing at the presence of God and serving God....it flows from our sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ and is the way the Holy Spirit draws the parish together by building up the community with the gifts God has given to each one…” (Rev. Robert Turner)

Stewardship a Way of Life

Stewardship is part of discipleship. But Christian discipleship begins with vocation, the call to follow Jesus and imitate his way of life. Who is a Christian steward? One who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord. (U.S. Bishop’s Pastoral Letter on Stewardship)

A Steward’s Guide to Time, Talent and Treasure

In responding to the Lord’s call to be good stewards we are invited to reflect and to pray about our response in these three areas: Time: Each week, God gives us 168 hours. “What portion of those 168 hours am I going to give back to God for all He has given to me?” Do I spend time in daily prayer? Do I pray with my family? Do I attend Sunday mass? Where else do you believe it is important for you and your family to spend time with God. Talent: God has given to each of us skills, qualities or talents. Yes, your talent could enrich the life of this parish and the community. No talent is less worthy than others. All talents are a blessing and a symbol of God presence in our lives. Treasure: From the blessing of treasure God asks us to dedicate a portion of it to serve those in need and to strengthen our own faith community. We invite you to pray to God about what you can give back to Him. A Biblical invitation is to give back to God 10% of what he has given us. The church invites us to give back this way: 5% to charities and 5% to the church.

We are in need of a group of people who can help Fr. Bob with the Communications, Technology and Facilities, to help him understand and become prepared to understand these things to better serve our community. You can join a Ministry or Group to give back to God doing what you love doing.

Respondiendo al llamado de Dios a ser discípulos corresponsables, reflexionemos y hagamos oración sobre nuestra respuesta en las siguientes áreas: Tiempo: Cada a semana Dios nos da 168 horas. “¿Que porción de estas horas le doy a Dios por todo lo que Él me da? ¿Dedico tiempo para mi oración diaria? ¿Hago oración con mi familia? ¿Participo en la Misa dominical? Reflexione en dónde más usted y su familia le pueden dedicar más tiempo a Dios. Talento: Dios nos ha dado a cada uno ciertas habilidades y cualidades o talentos. Si, su talento puede enriquecer la vida de esta parroquia y también a la comunidad en general. No hay ningún talento que sea menos que otros. Todos los talentos son una bendición y símbolo de la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas. Tesoro: Dios nos bendice con un salario de nuestro trabajo para proveer a nuestras familias. De este salario Dios nos pide que dediquemos una porción a los que están en necesidad y también a apoyar a nuestra comunidad de Fe. Una invitación bíblica nos pide considerar la donación del 10 por ciento de nuestro salario a Dios. La Iglesia nos pide que consideremos esta donación de esta forma: 5% para obras de caridad y otro 5% para la parroquia. Weddings Planning a wedding? From now on, we will be offering a monthly meeting for all couples wanting to get married in the Catholic Church. It is required for all couples to participate in this meeting before scheduling a wedding date. Future meeting dates: November 29, January 24, February 21, March 21, and April 25, these meetings are at 6pm in the church. For more info please contact the parish office.

The Feast of All Saints and All Souls

The origins of All Saints and All Souls Day. Are these linked with paganism and Halloween?

Both the Feast of All Saints and the Feast of All Souls evolved in the life of the

Church independently of paganism and Halloween. However, elements of

pagan practices were perhaps "baptized" by some cultures or attached

themselves to the celebration of All Saints and All Souls.

About the Feast of All Saints the exact origins of this celebration are uncertain,

although, after the legalization of Christianity in 313, a common

commemoration of Saints, especially the martyrs, appeared in various areas

throughout the Church. For instance, in the East, the city of Edessa celebrated

this feast on May 13; the Syrians, on the Friday after Easter; and the city of

Antioch, on the first Sunday after Pentecost. Both St. Ephrem (d. 373) and St.

John Chrysostom (d. 407) attest to this feast day in their preaching. The

primary reason for establishing a common feast day was because of the desire

to honor the great number of martyrs, especially during the persecution of

Emperor Diocletion (284-305), the worst and most extensive of the

persecutions. Quite supply, there were not enough days of the year for a feast

day for each martyr and many of them died in groups. A common feast day for

all saints, therefore, seemed most appropriate.

In 609, the Emperor Phocas gave the Pantheon in Rome to Pope Boniface IV,

who rededicated it on May 13 under the title St. Mary and All Martyrs.

The designation of November 1 as the Feast of All Saints occurred over time. Pope Gregory III (731-741) dedicated an oratory in the

original St. Peter's Basilica in honor of all the saints on November 1 and this date then became the official date for the celebration of

the Feast of All Saints in Rome. Sacramentaries of the 9th and 10th centuries also placed the Feast of All Saints on the liturgical

calendar on November 1.

According to Sicard of Cremona (d. 1215) recorded that Pope Gregory VII (1073-85) finally suppressed May 13 and mandated

November 1 as the date to celebrate the Feast of All Saints.

When the romans conquered Britain in AD 43 brought two pagan feasts: Feralia was held in late October to honor the dead.

Another Autumn festival honored Pomona, the goddess of fruits and trees; probably through this festival, apples became

associated with Halloween. Elements of these Roman celebrations were combined with the Celtic Samhain (Nov. 1st

).

With the spread of Christianity and the establishment of All Saints Day, some of these pagan customs remained in the English

speaking world for All Hallows Eve (or Halloween, All Saints Eve), perhaps at first more out of superstition and later, more out of fun.

In all, we find the Church establishing a liturgical feast day in honor of the saints independent of any pagan influence.

Along with the Feast of All Saints developed the Feast of All Souls. The Church has consistently encouraged the offering of prayers

and Mass for the souls of the faithful departed in Purgatory. At the time of their death, these souls are not perfectly cleansed of

venial sin or have not atoned for past transgressions, and thereby are deprived of the Beatific Vision. The faithful on earth can assist

these souls in Purgatory in attaining the Beatific Vision through their prayers, good works and the offering of Mass.

In the early days of the Church, the names of the faithful departed were posted in Church so that the community would remember

them in prayer. In the 6th century, the Benedictine monasteries held a solemn commemoration of deceased members at

Whitsuntide, the days following Pentecost. In Germany, Widukind, Abbot of Corvey (d. 980) recorded a special ceremony for the

faithful departed on Oct. 1. St. Odilo, the Abbot of Cluny (d. 1048), decreed for all of the Cluniac monasteries that special prayers be

offered and the Office of the Dead sung for all of the souls in Purgatory on Nov. 2, the day after All Saints. The Benedictines and

Carthusians adopted that same devotion, and soon Nov. 2 was adopted as the Feast of All Souls for the whole Church.

Festividad de Todos los Santos y los Fieles Difuntos

Los orígenes de Todos los Santos y los Fieles Difuntos. ¿Tienen alguna relación con el paganismo y Halloween?

Tanto la festividad de Todos los Santos como al Festividad de los fieles

difuntos se originaron en la vida de la Iglesia y no tienen nada que ver con

fiestas paganas ni con el Halloween. Sin embargo algunas prácticas paganas

por algunas culturas se asimilaron a la fiesta de Todos los Santos y Fieles

Difuntos.

Hablemos primero de la fiesta de Todos los Santos. El origen exacto no se

puede saber pero después de la legalización del cristianismo en el año 313 se

sabe que existía una práctica para conmemorar a los santos y en especial a los

mártires, esto es evidente en varias partes de la Iglesia. Por ejemplo en el Este

de la ciudad de Edesa se celebraba esta fiesta en el 13 de Mayo; en Siria era el

viernes después del Domingo de Resurrección; y la ciudad de Antioquia el

primer domingo después del Domingo de Pentecostés.

Tanto San Efrén (373) y San Juan Crisóstomo (407) dan testimonio de esta

fiesta en sus homilías. La razón primordial para establecer una fiesta común

para honrar a los santos era por el deseo de dar honor al gran número de

mártires, especialmente durante la persecución de Diocleciano (305) que fue

la peor y la más larga de todas las persecuciones. Esta persecución dejo un

gran número de mártires que los días del año no eran suficientes para cada

mártir. De aquí se originó la necesidad de tener un día para todos los santos.

El emperador Focas le dio el permiso al papa Bonifacio IV (609) para convertir el Panteón (templo) Romano en un templo Cristiano.

El papa consagro este templo el 13 de mayo bajo el título de Santa María y Todos los Mártires.

La designación de la festividad para el 1 de noviembre como festividad de Todos los Santos se desarrolló con el paso del tiempo. El

papa Gregorio III (731-741) dedicó un oratorio en la basílica original de San Pedro en honor de Todos los Santos para el 1 de

Junto con la fiesta de Todos los Santos se desarrolló también la fiesta de los fieles difuntos. La Iglesia siempre ha animado el

ofrecimiento de oraciones y misas por las almas de todos los fieles difuntos que se encuentran en purgatorio. En el tiempo de su

muerte estas almas no han sido perfectamente purificadas del pecado venial o de pecados anteriores y por esto no han podido

participar aun de la visión beatifica. Los fieles en la tierra pueden ayudar a estas almas en purgatorio para que alcancen la Visión

Beatifica por sus oraciones, buenas obras, y el ofrecimiento de la misa.

Desde los primeros siglos la Iglesia los nombres de los difuntos eran anunciados en algún lugar del templo para que la comunidad los

recordara en oración. En el siglo 6º los monasterios benedictinos de Inglaterra comenzaron con una celebración para conmemorar a

los difuntos días después de Pentecostés. En Alemania el Abad de Corve (980) escribía que había una ceremonia especial para los

fieles difuntos el 1 de octubre. San Odilo, el abad de Cluny de la orden benedictina (Francia 1048) decreto que en todos los
