Agosto 6, 2017-la Transfiguración del Señor

August 6, 2017 - The Transfiguration of the Lord

During Mass we pray the Penitential prayer and we say: “…and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.” We are asking everyone to pray for us. This is an important part of being a community of the faithful. Ten families will be recognized each week in the Mass with prayers for whatever their needs might be. You are also invited to pray for them throughout the week, remembering that our Lord has said “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). When God has lightened your burdens, He asks you to do the same for others. We don’t always know what burdens others may have, and they may wish to keep their burdens private. But we can pray that their needs be met and that God’s mercy be upon them, that they may know they are beloved of God and an important part of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church community. This week we pray for the following individuals and families: Durante la Misa oramos la oración penitencial y decimos: "..

Herberto & Georgina Aguilar

Jesus & Darla Aguilar

Leoncio & Martha Aguilar

Luis & Summer Aguilar

Pedro & Lucia Aguilar

Roberto & Kami Aguilar

Lorena Aguilar-Gomez

Juan & Sara Aguilera

Patricia Aguilera

st. This year we will be offering the study of the Bible

called The Bible Timeline. The classes are offered Wednesday morning 10am – noon and Thursday evening 7 – 9pm. Call Pat to register for this very enlightening journey: 503-654-5449. The Bible Time-line is a fascinating study that takes participants on a journey through the entire Bible. They will go deep into each period of salvation history and discover the amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture. Using a unique color-coded system, they will learn the major people, places, and events of the Bible and see how they all come together to reveal the remarkable story of our faith. The Bible Timeline has been granted the Imprimatur.

Liturgy Corner compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook “It is good that we are here” The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord re-minds us about the depth of the mystery that surrounded Jesus Christ – mystery in the sense that we can never exhaust who he really is or categorize him in any way. Just when the Apos-tles may have been getting really comfortable with their understanding of Jesus as friend and teacher, they catch a glimpse of his heavenly glory, challenging them to remain open to Christ communicating to them who he is as Son of God. The story of the Transfiguration comes after Jesus’ prediction of his Passion and his teaching that disciples must be prepared to fol-low in the same way. It also follows Peter’s con-fession that Jesus is the Messiah. The pres-ence of Moses and Elijah represent the Law and the Prophets. In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructed the disciples to keep secret what they had seen until after "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." Un-til they witnessed Jesus’ Passion and Death, the disciples could not possibly understand what he meant by being "raised from the dead." The second reading we hear a first-hand account of today’s feast: Peter himself describes what he saw and heard on the mount of Transfiguration. He saw the glory of Jesus, the Father’s Son, and he heard the familiar words: “This is my Son, my beloved.” We too are called to remain humble and open to the revelatory actions of God’s Word and Spirit as a way to enter ever more deeply into the mystery of who God is for us in Jesus Christ.

Like Saint Ignatius of Loyola, let us be won over by the Lord Jesus and, led by Him, place ourselves at the service of others.

This week with the celebration of the Transfiguration of Jesus,

I would like to suggest a couple good offer-ings to help understand the person of Je-sus. Let me know what you think. First is: Who Do You Say That I Am? The Four Great Expectations of the Messiah Bishop Barron illuminates with conviction that Jesus of Naz-areth is the promised Messiah and revelation of God become man. He shows how Jesus fulfills the four tasks of the Messiah accord-ing to the Old and New Testaments and how the living legacy of Christ is proclaimed by the Church. The second is from the Symbolon series session 5 Who is Jesus.

Parish Bottle Fund Raiser: Remem-ber this is a continuing fundraiser. Bring your bottles to the church the first Sunday of the month and we will turn them in for you. There are more bags on the tables in the front of church for you to use. AGAIN DON’T FORGET TO PICK UP A BAG TO TAKE HOME ON THE TABLE IN THE ENTRANCE OF CHURCH.
