    EXTREME CLIMATES - ATACAMA

The hottest place in the world is Dallol, in theSahara desert in Ethiopia.

The average temperature here is 34.4 C.

the driest place of Earth is the Atacama

    Desert in Chile.

The Atacama Desert is about 950 kilometers

long. It lies along the coast of Chile between

Antofagasta in the south, Arica in the north,

with the Pacific Ocean to the west and the mountains of the Andes to the

    east.

Some of the desert extends high up into the Andes.

Desert are usually very hot, but the Atacama Desert is different - each day

the average temperatures are from 0to 25 C.

Sometimes, warms winds around the equator in the Pacific, change the

weather all over the world. Even the Atacama Desert can have rain storms at

these times. In the mountain parts of the desert, high in the Andes, it can

snow. But in some parts of Atacama water never falls. Between 1371 and

1971 a period of 400 years there wasnt any rain in some parts of thedesert.

How does this happen? The Atacama Desert is to the west of the Andes

Mountain. We south east winds from the Atlantic travel across the land and

the rainforests of Brazil. They carry water in clouds. When the winds hit the

Andes, they move up into colder air and drop their water as rain. So the

rainfall on the east side of the Andes is very high. There is enough water to

feed the Amazon River and all the rainforests. The Atacama lies in the rain

    shadow of the Andes.

The opposite thing happens on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, in the Pacific

Ocean. The south east wind arrives, and hits a mountain called Mount Wai-

ale-ale. The clouds break and the rain falls. It can rain for 350 days a year on

    this island.
