Entertainment ChinaHaving seen explosive growth in recent years, the entertainment industry in China is growing at a much faster pace than the overall economy. As more people in China enter the middle class, disposable income has grown by leaps and bounds. In 2013, just the live perfor-mances segment in China was already a USD1.28 billion business¹! No wonder everyone wants a piece of it.

In early March, the industry saw two prominent trade shows in Guangzhou in the same week. Starting the ball rolling was Prolight+Sound Guangzhou, which saw a record number of 68,441 registered visitors. For those looking for professional audio solutions, the Audio Brand Name Halls and Pro Audio Halls were the two key places to be. Visitors looking for leading international brands were not disappointed as the big boys such as Bose, d&b audiotechnik, Sennheiser, Peavey, Shure, Harman, Yamaha, Adam Hall etc., were all present and decking out their best prosound solution.

Riding the momentum, the Guangzhou Entertainment Technology (GET) show opened next and over 60,000 registered visitors were welcomed. Though the number of exhibitors stood at only 550, the vibrancy of the crowd was hard to dismiss. For visitors looking for visual and lighting solutions, GET impresses with well-known names such as PR Lighting, EK Lights, Fine Art, GTD and many more.

“The success (of the GET show) is a communal effort of all the mem-bership companies of SCEE and the help from our volunteers,” said Wang, President of Industry Association of South China Entertain-ment (SCEE). “I hope we can cultivate more excellent enterprises and international brands, and set up the Chinese brand position in the international industry.”

While more and more international brands make their way in, I think we should also expect more Chinese brands and manufacturers to step up as well.

AIMS Productions Expands The Number Of d3 Studios In APAC Region

SINGAPORE: Singapore-based AIMS Productions (SG) Pte Ltd. has joined the growing roster of d3 Studios, boosting the number in the APAC region to three. As a d3 Studio AIMS offers a full d3 workflow as its in-house solution for pre-production and production of experiential multimedia for live events. d3 Technologies maintains a network of partner studios worldwide dedicated to helping fulfill customers’ d3 requirements, from consultation and support to client demos and more.

AIMS combines visual arts with innovative technology to design and implement visionary multimedia productions for high-profile campaigns and installations. Productions typically encompass large-format video projection, projection mapping and interactive design, including Virtual Reality and responsive lighting design.

"I'm thrilled that AIMS is officially representing d3 in the APAC region,” says d3 Founder, Chris Bird. “Their dedication to designing and delivering innovative and quality events is second to none, and we look forward to supporting them and their customers further, working closer with them now they have qualified as a d3 Studio.”

According to Dario Scerna, Creative Director at AIMS, d3 has been a game changer for the company. “Thanks to d3 our design and technical teams have improved tremendously in terms of multimedia creative solutions and problem solving,” he says. “d3’s integrated solution is very user friendly and easy to learn and master.”

Scerna notes that the company’s workflow “is now more efficient due to the design and technical teams having found a common language and platform in d3. For AIMS, d3 has become the best playground for planning, production, R&D, and delivery.”

Scerna explains that d3’s real time 3D engine “allows us to see a perfect simulation of our shows at the previs stage. The 3D engine is also great for importing complex 3D models, and it gives us the flexibility to work on different mapping features like parallel or feed

“The pre-set up calculation of projectors is also helpful in understanding how to distribute units for each venue and show,” he adds. “We also like the Dynamic Blend, auto edge blend and mask features, dramatically speeding up even the most complicated mapping projects on-site.”

Scerna says that for content development d3 has proven to be “a better environment to go beyond 4K resolution and deliver content with smooth playback than ever before. It enables us to deliver and support the constant high demand of large video format projection by our clients.”

d3 also allows AIMS’s designers “to manage real time compositing and work in layers in the media server timeline. This is important for managing changes on the fly and avoiding long rendering times,” says Scerna. The system has also simplified operation. “We can now integrate systems on one platform, such as we did for a concert where both videos on the stage backdrop and a kinetic light sculpture were programmed and controlled on d3,” he points out.

Vincent Steenhoek, d3 Lead Product Specialist for d3, had recently visited AIM’s to lead training sessions on the new VFC cards and 12.1 Gold software release. “Training in the region is a big priority for d3,” Steenhoek notes. “More people trained on the d3 platform means an ever-growing pool of d3 users in the APAC region and worldwide.”

Resolution X Expands Their ETC Portfolio

AUSTRALIA: Resolution X, one of the largest providers of rental lighting, audio and rigging equipment in Australia, are leaders in bringing new and innovative equipment to the shows they work on. Staying ahead of the game requires the need for continued investment in new hire inventory, including fixtures and consoles.

In order to cater to their theatre clients, Res X knew they had to offer Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC) lighting equipment as it is regularly the preferred brand in that area of the market. Consequently they now own a couple of ETC Ion consoles, ETC Gio consoles and have a large inventory of ETC Source Four LED Lustr®+ fixtures.

“The purchase was definitely a result of customer demand, particularly from theatrical designers,” commented Marcus Pugh, Business Development Manager at Res X. “The Source Four LED Lustr®+ fixtures are second to none when it comes to LED profiles. The x7 Color System achieves theatre-worthy colour rendering, plus they’re silent, which is crucial for theatrical works. So far the fixtures have performed flawlessly wherever we’ve deployed them.”

With the ETC control, Res X initially purchased a couple of the smaller ETC Ion consoles to cater for tours that had specified them. However, as word got out that they had some ETC Ions, Res X soon realised they had to add to their initial purchase in order to keep up with demand.

“The ETC Gio was the next step up,” explained Marcus. “We find that operators often like to program a show with

the Gio, then once all the cues are loaded and the show locked in, they can transfer it into the Ion and take that on the road. The Ion has a small footprint, so it makes sense. Many features are intuitive and easy to figure out.”

Gio has a fast, accessible control surface, with an easy-to-navigate backlit keypad. It includes two integral, articulating multi-touch displays and supports up to three external monitors, all of which can also be multi-touch.

“The Gio offers all the power and usability of the larger Eos and easily integrates with the Ion console,” remarked Marcus.

The ETC solutions were supplied by JANDS Australia.

d&b audiotechnik offers far field noise calculation software. d&b is introducing NoizCalc, a new software tool to predict the far field noise emission of open air events. Noise from outdoor entertainment events has become a serious topic, particularly as the number of events in populated urban environments increases. Gaining permission to stage an event frequently requires an official statement with a prediction of the noise impact on the surrounding areas.

NoizCalc is designed by d&b in collaboration with noise consulting and software development experts SoundPLAN GmbH, as the next tool in the d&b enabling technology portfolio. NoizCalc predicts sound propagation of multiple coherently emitting sources such as line arrays and subwoofer arrays. Using 3D terrain data the software accurately predicts the far field noise emission across the terrain according to ISO 9613-2 and Nord 2000 standards, allowing system designers to predict any potential noise issues during the event planning stage. Projection MappingIn the last issue, we explored a new trend making waves in spatial augmented reality: Projection Mapping As Performance Art. If you missed it you can read it via this link: https://issuu.com/spinworkz/docs/eta_tablet_2016_03/1 In this issue, we get views from two companies specialised in projection mapping.

Founded in 2011 Cyber Illusions is a new media design and production studio based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The company specialises in providing total solutions for the creation and deployment of multimedia experiences anywhere in the world. The team consists of multidisciplinary specialists versed in merging video, lighting, architecture, sound and special effects.

Answering on behalf of Cyber Illusions is Lalindra Amarasekara - a technologist, an entertainment designer and the founder of Cyber Illusions. As a pioneer in video

mapping and projection technology within Sri Lanka, Lalindra has worked with commercial entities as well as cultural festivals.

The other participating company is no stranger to ETA, as we have from time to time published their amazing work. Established in 1997, Hexogon Private Limited was formally known as Mozz Creation focusing in events and exhibitions. It was later privatized and renamed in 2008 to specialize in audio-visual, lighting and show integration provider using the most advanced visual solutions in the market. Hexogon Solution Private Limited has since grown and established offices in Bangkok, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and upcoming Macau, and now owns one of largest fleet of cutting edge 4K digital projectors and equipment in the world.

Answering on behalf of Hexogon is Group Managing Director, Adrian G. S. Goh, who has been responsible in steering the company to its highly respected position today.

ETA: There seems to be a new trend of mapping onto human models now. It was done with the new Kat Von D makeup

range and with tattoo mapping. What do you know of this trend and do you do it as well?

Lalindra: Projection mapping is a very versatile technique that can be deployed to achieve many different kinds of effects. It’s the projection designer’s creative vision that gives way to how the technology is used.

The human body is a very popular subject to work with for any artist. For projection, it also provides a canvas that is always fascinating and familiar to all of us. We have created projections that interact with and sometimes conform to the human body. It always has a surprising effect on the audience or viewer. As a trend, I think mapping on the body and tattoos will be a part of many trends that we will see where projection is being used.

Adrian: We always want to explore new and interesting technology to enhance our services to the end users. Interactive, real-time tracking and VR seem to be the upcoming trend. However, Hexogon is still not ready to implement these applications into our scope of work. This may sound a little slow in comparison to other companies that are already diving deep into such technologies. Not that we have not started exploring, but we felt that only when the technology is ready and when I mean ready, it has to work perfectly and then we will push it out into the market. Not under controlled viewing, controlled environment and special post production editing to make it look like it’s working perfectly in real world. Viewers need to see the real thing and be impressed.

ETA: As a company that specialises in projection mapping, are there any specific techniques or considerations that you take into account when creating your designs?

Lalindra: We always look at the space available and think how best we can use it as a canvas. Projection mapping is always effective when we use the existing space to transform with light and animation. There is always an element of tricking the senses. In order to achieve a high quality experience, the point of view of the audience and direction of the projectors needs to be carefully calculated.

The visual direction is also very important when creating a good projection design. Even in its most basic form there has to be story that unveils for the viewer. How the space and surface is used to tell the story is what I think, defines good from great work.

Adrian: Good delivery is key. There are lots of techniques to get a job done. Depending on what the customers want

SPECIAL FEATUREE T A M a r c h 2 0 1 6 42

and also their expectations. First and most importantly, when a brief is given by the client, no matter how good is the money, we have to ensure that we can achieve it. If the customer is expecting something impossible, we have to guide them and we may not get the job. Once this is established, then next is to see the detail and limitation of the project. Sometimes it could be the site limitation, sometimes technology or most often, timeline. There are no standard special ways of getting a job done, but knowing the limitation and using the best equipment suitable for the job will be a good start. Having to achieve that, the company strives to equip ourselves with the widest range of equipment, from media servers, range of projectors down to connectivity. Then it will all come down to the creativity.

In creative, Hexogon has taken a lot of effort to grow the department. Wherever the company expands, the first department that I want, is not sales but content department. Only with people from different places, you will be able to get a good mix of creative inputs. For example, the last 28th SEA Games 2015 in Singapore we

did, it was a mad rush, but in a short period of less than 2 months, the team came together and generated almost 120 minutes of 4K content on the floor projection for the Opening and Closing ceremony.

ETA: How big a part does the technology you use play into the overall mapping? Is there any particular product that you prefer to use?

Lalindra: Devices and software play a very crucial role in projection mapping. Also, as in most technology, the method deployed needs to be invisible to the viewer to fully experience what is being presented. Which means the tech installs have to be precisely calculated and the system you use should enable you to pre-plan and deploy as per required.

We do not rely on a single technology for our projects. What we use is purely dependent on the type of design we intend to do. However, our primary “go-to” media server is Watchout from Dataton. Watchout gives us the stability and flexibility we require to deploy large multi-projection setups easily.

In 2015, Hexogon was awarded The Guinness Book Record for The Greatest Light Output in a single canvas for the 28th South East Asia Games in Singapore using 160 digital projectors

SPECIAL FEATUREE T A M a r c h 2 0 1 6 44

TouchDesigner by Derivative is another very resourceful tool we use in developing interactive and generative visuals for projection.

All these products will make the task of deployment easier. However, it is the creativity and dedication of the projection designer that delivers impressive projection mapping designs.

Adrian: As demand increases, in time of delivery, complexity of projects, expectations, there is a need for technology advancement. Manufacturers are improving their products to meet these expectations. I will not specify brands but more on capabilities. For example,

Resolution: From as low as SVGA till the very commonly used Full HD and now 4K resolution. Projectors packed with such high resolution allow us not only to throw better images, but in projection mapping, it means we are able to project much bigger image without compromising the resolution. Bigger image means lesser server output and indirectly saves cost.

Brightness: As image goes bigger, demand for brightness increases. Brands are introducing brighter projectors these days. 10,000 lumens used to be common brightness. When I started in the projection business 7 years back, 20,000 lumens become the “must have” for large scale projection. Now, we are talking about 30,000 – 45,000 lumens in a single projector. Outside the projection mapping market, products are going into true laser illumination and climbing as high as 60,000 lumens. There will be no stop to this.

Eventually it all comes down to who can pack the brightest, best colour, and smallest in size projector to win the war.

Media Servers: For all of the above, you need a powerful box to run them. There are a lot of brands in the market now, able to drive multiple 4K content through a single box. Complex blending, 3D projection mapping application, pre-visualization before you even step into the venue, camera tracking, you name it, they will make it. Just what is the price you are willing to pay.

Lastly, connectivity and redundancy: These are also very important part of a job. With lousy connectivity and no redundancy, a show can fail. Hexogon is very particular about this area. We are not the best, but we want to be the best. I personally am a little more careful with this area. I always felt that no matter how good is the technology, as long as they can fail, the show fails. I rather have 2 of the same concurrently working in the system, then a single piece of equipment that claims to have redundancy built-in. A little primitive, but well….

Also it will be important to ensure that the crew implementing these installations are well trained and know how to take care of their equipment like their own babies. Without these, failure rate will be much higher no matter what professional products you use. So people is the key to a successful job done.

Lighting on the MoveIf you follow the lighting industry on a regular basis you

tend to get a feel for what companies are on the rise. Elation Professional is clearly one of those companies,

having made a mark of late with a number of key projects and string of innovative products that have garnered praise and industry awards, most noticeably the company’s Platinum FLX™ hybrid moving head. With a global reach that stretches across every major continent and operating in a growing variety of market segments, Elation is raising its profile in the professional lighting industry in Asia and worldwide.

Elation is a privately held corporation and a member of the ADJ Group of companies, which has a total group turnover of over $100m USD annually. Starting as a simple DJ lighting company in southern California in 1985, the ADJ Group has transformed into a diversified entertainment and architectural lighting company that today encompasses multiple brands: American DJ (ADJ), Elation Professional, Acclaim Lighting (architectural), Global Truss America/DuraTruss, and American Audio. The ADJ Group was founded by Chuck Davies (now chairman) and is currently headed by President Toby Velazquez. Elation Professional is headed by Elation Sales Director Eric Loader with its European operations run by Sales & Marketing Manager Marc Librecht.

Seeing a need in the professional market for feature-packed products at a lower price point, Elation Professional was founded in 1992. Headquartered in Los Angeles with

European operations based in The Netherlands, Elation has expanded its product line over the years while also focusing on providing a top level of support it calls Total Support. Years of consistent growth, an expanding portfolio of popular products, and a growing base of loyal customers has elevated the company to one of the key players in entertainment lighting.

Elation responds to the market’s ever-changing demands for new lighting technology by developing innovative yet affordable products that are available through a worldwide network of dealers and distributors. In Asia, where the ADJ Group of companies has opened an office in Guangzhou, China, demand for the Elation brand is growing. While Elation has had an established presence for years in Asian countries like Singapore, South Korea and Japan for example, the company is expanding and strengthening its network by developing a sales network and establishing distributor relationships across the region. Just recently, Elation entered into an exclusive distribution agreement with Lexair Entertainment Pty Ltd. to serve the large and growing market in Australia and New Zealand and Elation continues to actively seek partners in other markets for its growing brand.

PROFILEE T A M a r c h 2 0 1 6 47

International Sales Manager for Elation’s Asia-Pacific region is Chuck Green. He comments: “We have an exciting product line that is increasingly being recognized as unique and innovative and that is opening doors for us. From the worship market in Korea to the resort market in Thailand, the potential in the region for a growing brand like Elation is obviously huge. We will continue to support our established partners while working to create new contacts and grow our presence in the region.”

Elation has worked closely with suppliers in China to develop innovative products. As clients continued to ask for more efficient lights, the company went to Philips to start from scratch with a new lamp. “If ever there was a quantum leap in lighting, it was that,” Elation’s global sales director Eric Loader says. The need for a brighter, cheaper, longer-lasting lamp led to what would become Elation’s Platinum Series which, released in 2009, really began to turn heads. One of the most successful Platinum Series luminaires has been the Platinum FLX, a hybrid luminaire launched last fall that has received widespread praise as well as industry awards. Elation eventually got into the video business, first in 2009 with LED screens that were low-res but increasingly with high-res video products. And just last summer the company expanded into the digital lighting market with the launch of the EMOTION™, a new generation moving head digital light that is both easy to use and priced to open up new doors for this technology.

Elation’s R&D takes place in the company’s Los Angeles headquarters with most product ideas the result of working with customers. Elation has continually made R&D

MAYA Music Festival Moves 25,000 Party GoersTHAILAND

Lightsource and Media Vision combine to create the stunning atmosphere

The MAYA Music festival debuted successfully last year. The event created by FEEL Corporation had an objective of creating an EDM Festival with a

production design theme reflecting stunning Thai Arts to promote Thailand as one of the world’s EDM major destinations.

This year, on Feb 20th, in Pattaya, MAYA had gained more attention, with 25,000 EDM party goers gathered to dance to the world’s famous DJs and the headliners like Dash Berlin and Tiesto. 2 stages were presented with the major stage dedicated to EDM and the other a LIVE Stage for renowned Thai bands to perform.

The EDM Stage design this year was inspired by a Royal Thai Mask dance. Hanuman, a character in Ramayana

literature, was fashioned into the stage design to stun the EDM fans at a height 26 meters. LightSource and Media Vision were responsible for all the stage, truss, structural and AVL equipment as one team. The DJs performed from inside the mouth of the Hanuman structure creating a really cool look!

According to Lightsource, the greatest challenge was with relations to how to create the show that can combine both of Thai art culture and modern EDM music perfectly. “We had to use Lighting and visual work together to tell the Hanuman history in EDM music mood but still have Thai identity too. Moreover because MAYA is an outdoor party event, we also had difficulties such as limited time and weather. We could not work continuously,” said Norasate Somboonwong, Operations Director, Lightsource.

LIVEE T A M a r c h 2 0 1 6 49

To resolve the issue, Lightsource and the event creator, decided to use 3D Box service. 3D Box is a new department service by Light source that uses Wysiwyg R36 software to create 3D Visualization. “We were able to program the lighting show and see overall model lighting in advance. Visual and Lighting staff could also control the concept of the show easily. That helped us save time, and work through the process continuously.”

LightSource illuminated the Hanuman gigantic head with 42 Martin Mac Viper profiles, 16 Martin Mac XB Beam, 120 Terbly PT189 beam, 42 PR Lighting X1061 LED Moving wash light, 60 EK Lights Chromapix M33, 40 Intella Storm 1000 RGBW Strobe, 30 Martin Atomic Strobe, 10 Studio Due City Beam, 8 colour search light 7k, Molefays, LED Pars, pixel bars and more. The lighting fixtures were controlled smoothly via 2 GrandMA II full size console and 2 MA NPU. The lighting was designed and operated solely by LightSource.

Media Vision installed more than 800 tiles of LED Display P8 Outdoor series to fulfill the Hanuman's physical appearance with BARCO Folsom ImagePro HD to support the screen.

d&b audiotechnik system were the main speakers used with more than 50 J-Series speakers flown on frame complemented with 38 units of J-SUB & J-INFRA to make a magnificent sound with power to cheer up patrons all night long! L-Acoustics KARA and L-Acoustics SB 18 were used for the DJ monitor system.

What is an EDM Festival without all the laser, special effects and pyrotechnics? Almost 1000 lb of CO2 were used at the event for the smoke effect, with pyrotechnics handled by Le Maitre and Next F/X by Pyrotronix PTX System from Germany igniting amazing scenes.

MAYA music festival 2017 date has been announced to be held on Feb 17th-18th at MAYA Space, Pattaya.

Robe For 2016 Al Burda AwardsABU DHABI

Lighthouse has lit the event, now in its 12th year, several times, chosen because of its understanding of Islamic design principles and history

Terry Miranda and Dubai based Lighthouse Productions designed and supplied another elegant set and lighting design for the 2016 Al Burda Islamic

Art Awards staged at the Abu Dhabi National Theatre in the UAE.

Nearly 100 Robe fixtures graced the rig, including 16 x ROBIN 300 Beams, 12 x ColorWash 575 ATs, 12 x MMX Spots, 24 x PARFect 100s, 12 x Pointes and 16 x CycFX 8s. Lighthouse, known throughout the region for its fresh and inventive designs, has invested in Robe since 2004 and currently owns a large inventory of products.

The annual Al Burda Awards is open to artists of calligraphy, poetry and music from across the Middle East and internationally, whose works are judged by a panel of experts, and held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Abdulla Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign

Affairs, and organised by the Federal Ministry of Culture and Knowledge development.

Lighthouse has lit the event, now in its 12th year, several times, chosen because of its understanding of Islamic design principles and history, elements of which it has actively applied to its eye-catching production designs over the years.

The starting point for designing this year’s set and lighting was Islamic architecture with its geometric curves, arches, complex symmetries and domed structures. The intricate calligraphy associated with individual domes was blended with a modern aesthetic created using multiple dome shapes on the set as projection surfaces (‘receptacles’), which were outlined in LED, and fully mapped to receive detailed custom content. The patterning theme was also

LIVEE T A M a r c h 2 0 1 6 51

continued on the black gloss floor as the design united all elements of the environment.

In the roof, six of the theatre’s house LX bars were utilised for lighting positions, staggered downstage to upstage, with 17 x Robe PARfect LED PARs installed inside each of the smaller set arches and 7 x Robe 300E Beams on the floor at the apex of each projection surface.

The CycFX 8s were deployed along the front of the stage above the Perspex stage skirting and used in the footlight position for subtle front light as well as for a sweeping curtain of light and chases into the audience and back onto the stage, where they also worked very well for washing the performance area.

The Pointes were rigged on LX bar 2 and used for what they do best – punchy high-impact beam and gobo effects and key lighting for speakers at the central podium.

MMXs are one of Terry’s favourite Robe fixture and feature in many of his designs. For this one he used six MMX WashBeams on LX Bar 4 and another six positioned at FOH, ideal for front-of-stage washes and as artist specials.Terry likes the brightness, flexibility and light weight of all these fixtures as well as their “consistent and reliable performance”.

Lighting was controlled using Jands L5 console which also controlled the video content, synergising both the lighting

and video content for the show. Low weight loading in the 30-year old theatre is a major challenge, so using Robe’s range of ‘smaller-brighter-lighter’ luminaires is a great solution for being able to maximise the environment and fit in as many fixtures as possible.

“Having access to more fixtures helps create a diversity of scenes without any compromises in quality” confirmed Terry, adding that as an LD, “Flexibility, brightness and good functionality plus a decent price point” is what he looks for in a lighting fixture.

Lighthouse’s client base is extremely varied, and Terry, the creative principle as well as the company’s founder, needed fixtures that could cover multiple scenarios. “Having Robe on-board has ‘allowed myself and the company to expand into many new areas,” he observes.

Lighthouse has been investing in Robe for around 12 years and has seen the company grow and evolve enormously. “We believe Robe is currently the number one lighting manufacturer worldwide. The brand has grown consistently and the quality has always been maintained. Robe has also remained privately owned by the same people and as customers this has enhanced our great relationship – on both personal and professional levels,” said Terry in conclusion.

UAV’s K2 L’Acoustics Make Their Debut @ FORT CANNING GREEN

SINGAPORE

The company also got to push the limits with their new Avid Venue console

Universal AV Pte Ltd (UAV), proudly had the opportunity to unwrap and impress audiences with their K2 speakers in January this year. The speakers

pumped out the audio in an open field for two concerts that were brought in by LAMC Productions. Walk The Moon held their concert on 19th January whereas One OK Rock held their 2016 “35xxxv” Asia Tour on the 23rd. Both events were held at the Fort Canning Green, which is a small hill with open greenery, located in the central part of Singapore.

UAV was hired to be responsible for the audio, lighting and roof structure for both the events, which featured one main stage. Both concerts attracted thousands of followers of the acts. The electrifying music and mood on both days were augmented with the K2s doing their part in keeping the atmosphere super-charged.

Chief Operations Officer, Ruben James, highlighted one of the challenges that the company faced, “January is a rainy season in Singapore and also the venue was up a slope, which meant we had to ensure that the audiences down the slope did not have hearing fatigue. We called upon our L’acoustics trained sound engineers to consider the humidity level in which the speakers had to operate in as well as the coverage for the audience.”

In-house engineers Surin Venugopal and Feroz Mya Aye, worked on pre-production in the office by calibrating the audio system prior to going on site. “Using the laser measurement tool from L’acoustics, we designed the Blue print of the outdoor venue to help facilitate the Installation. Together with the soundvision software tool we were able to measure and install the audio systems precisely.”

“The unique ability of the K2s was that we were still able to remotely control the audio coverage, even after the installation via the soundvision software, which of course would not have been possible with a conventional line array. This ability enabled us to be even more precise with the coverage even after the installation.”

The concerts also provided UAV the opportunity to use their recently acquired Avid DIGI Design venue profile which was used for both the FOH and Monitor console. “The system was fantastic with the Preamps of the Avid consoles,” added a delighted Ruben.

The concerts were well received by the audience, with the promoter, Lauretta Alabons of LAMC productions adding, “‘Clarity of the K2 system was really remarkable.” A truly satisfied customer which reiterates UAV's commitment to the K2s and the Venue console.

Queen Victoria Turns Purple For International Women’s Day

AUSTRALIA

Cunard’s spectacular Queen Victoria liner helped kick off International Women’s Day activity around the globe by turning purple in Sydney.

Wearing a 60-metre long banner on her hull sporting this year’s campaign message, Queen Victoria took on a purple hue as dusk fell in the

city, reflecting the internationally recognised colour for women’s rights.

Lasting until midnight, the illumination was a striking tribute to International Women’s Day, which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.

The event was managed by Event Emporium with lighting designed by Ziggy Ziegler and operated by Ben Ronczka. Chameleon Touring Systems supplied 31 x Martin MAC Quantums, 16 x Clay Paky Mythos and 2 x MA Lighting grandMA2 light consoles. The ship was lit from both sides as well as from the bow. Ziggy required a punchy light that could reach the distance from the Sydney Opera House across the water to the port side of the ship.

“The Clay Paky Mythos was perfect for the long throw plus they were bright enough as we were not only lighting the ship from quite a distance, we were lighting it in purple, one of the darkest colours you can use,” explained Ziggy. “A whole row of Mythos gave us the punch we needed. We worked with Cunard’s photographer who wanted to take photos of the ship as the sun was going down and the purple needed to change slightly over that time to make his photos work. So we needed a bright fixture with a narrow beam and colour mixing – Mythos was ideal. Also, they’re

quick to set up and are not a big unit, we just popped them on the roadcases and off we went!”

The starboard side of the ship was lit at a close distance from the Overseas Passenger Terminal so a light with a fairly wide angle that drew little power was required. Ziggy had come across the Martin MAC Quantums at Sydney Town Hall and had found that he could light the entire Town Hall from their 14 metre trim with just four Quantums. He knew they would be ideal for this project.“The MAC Quantums are very bright and cover a large area as their zoom is quite wide,” he said. “Plus they’re low powered and also emit little heat which was important as there was public in the area. They also do a good purple. They’re very impressive and tiny compared to their output.”

A total of 24 x MAC Quantums lit the starboard side of the ship whilst a further ten Quantums were situated on the bow of the ship uplighting the front of the ship.

Control was by two grandMA2 lights; one for the Mythos and one for the Quantums with added Wireless DMX to control the Quantums on the ship.

International Women's Day was celebrated on 8th March around the globe.

Hong Kong’s Ko Shan Theatre Upgrades Meyer Sound System To MINA

HONG KONG

MINA's compact size, self-power and incredible audio quality seal the deal

The Ko Shan Theatre in Hong Kong, China has installed MINA™ line array loudspeakers to upgrade its long-standing Meyer Sound system. Used

to discreetly support a schedule of Cantonese opera productions, the compact MINA system was chosen for the 1,031-seat theatre due to its low profile, as it was important to theatre management that the system had zero visibility.

“The MINA system has been more than just a technology upgrade—it has truly transformed our entire audio operation and system workflow,” said Yeung Tsz Yung, the theatre’s resident deputy technical manager. “We are very impressed, and truly appreciate the support Meyer Sound provided before, during, and after the installation.”

Aesthetics proved to be one of the project’s most significant challenges. “The MINA arrays are hung within cave-like concrete compartments, and concealed behind black mesh cloth—the same fabric that Meyer Sound uses on its cinema surround loudspeakers,” explained Brian Chow of Audio Dynamic, Meyer Sound's Hong Kong dealer. “The compartments are small, narrow, and an odd, asymmetrical shape. The arrays are small enough to fit, and yet they still provide enough power to compete with the exceptionally loud Cantonese opera percussion.”

The MINA system replaces a system of CQ Series loudspeakers. “The previous Meyer Sound system sounded

very good, so we were confident that the new system would meet our expectations,” said Chow. “Now with MINA, we have incredible accuracy, definition, and headroom—it has totally changed our way of mixing. We are constantly discovering new ways to improve the audio in our shows.”

Chow points to the new system’s self-powered design as another benefit. “With the building’s new construction, we were left with very little space, and very tight spaces to run conduit for speaker cables,” he says. “Because MINA is self-powered, it enabled us to save space and not have to worry about an amplifier rack and cabling.”

The LCR configuration comprises hidden left and right arrays of six MINA loudspeakers each, a center array of eight M1D line array loudspeakers, and two 700-HP subwoofers concealed in the ceiling rigging. Six MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers provide front fill, and three UPA-1P loudspeakers cover the balcony. A Galileo® Callisto™ loudspeaker management system with two Galileo Callisto 616 array processors provides drive and alignment. The Ko Shan Theatre opened in 1983 as a 3,000-seat, semi-open-air venue. After several years of struggling with weather and noise issues, the theatre was completely redesigned, reopening in 1996 as an indoor venue.

APG Speakers Play Their Part At BelvedereTHAILAND

Taking over an existing club in Phuket, Thailand, the new owners gave the space a new lease of life with renovations and by re-branding the club as Belvedere

Luxury Club. The Belvedere is essentially one huge room that features the first floor and a balcony VIP area. Local and International DJs keep the club pumped up every day of the week.

Ensuring patrons have a great time at the club are the APG systems. The Front of House systems feature 3 units of APG UL210 line-array speakers with one unit of UL210D down-fill speaker placed per side, on the left and right, complemented with 4 units of APG TB218S high power very low frequency speakers that help ensure the audio coverage to the major part of the Dance area and the wings of the Balcony area. 2 units of MX4 play the monitor role for the DJs.

The first floor also features 4 units of MX1 under the Balcony for coverage whereas the Balcony features another 4 units of MX1 at the VIP and Bar area with 2 units of MX4 and SB115 for delay. Digital Signal Processing is handled by 2 units of DMS48.

APG SEA helped to ensure that the systems exceeded expectations of the owners. Imran Hariht, Sales Director of APG SEA commented, “We had the in-house operational team as well as the shareholders involved in the fine-tuning session and everyone was happy when the system was

handed over.” Imran also provided training for the local technical support person hired by the club.

The Installed system is impressive, comparing the amount of cabinet vs the SPL that it can deliver through the whole of the listening area of the club. The Main FOH which deployed APG UNILINE plays an important role contributing the main sound energy for the venue.

The APG UNILINE UL210 and UL210D main “line array” element is designed for medium to long-range sound reinforcement applications requiring high power, maximum clarity and exceptional pattern control. Its loaded with APG's very own ISOTOP which employs an active annular horn and iso-phase technology to achieve acoustic impedance adaptation and performance comparable to traditional compression drivers, but with greatly increased bandwidth and power handling.

Sebastian Song, Managing Director of APG SEA, highlighted, “We are very excited with the opportunity this project brought for us. This is the first 100% APG system installation along the famed Bangla Road stretch within Patong, Phuket.

Nutthanapat Prakesong (Ms Kwan) of Belvedere reaction to the sound system highlights a very satisfied customer, “Sound system is fantastic! APG provided us very good support, with fast response and sound expertise.”

With Owner Manja Of MJ Event For Anugerah Juara Lagu 30

The long awaited Anugerah Juara Lagu 30 (AJL30) held their award winning event on 24th January 2016 at Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam. AJL is an

annual music competition event in Malaysia, organized by TV3 since 1986. Performances from Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Yasin Sulaiman, Datuk Jamal Abdillah, Black, Jaclyn Victor and many more sparked up the stadium. The vibrant atmosphere was enhanced further as the crowd cheered for Akim Ahmad and his band “Akim and the Majistret”. Winners of AJL30, the band song “Potret” led them to the RM50,000 grand prize. A further RM12,000 was given to the band as they also won the best performance award that night. It was definitely a spectacular night for Akim Ahmad and his band bagging two awards. Coming in second, Faizal Tahir took the RM35,000 with his song “Assalamualaikum” while Caliph Buskers took the third place with the song “Hanya Namamu”.

Apart from the amazing performance displayed by the artistes, we were smitten by the lighting display. The swirls

and beams of the lighting fixtures were a spectacular performance in itself. With a total of at least 190 lighting fixture installed throughout the Stadium, we were able to witness these lights performing in unison. The Lighting engineer professionally coordinated these lights to blend in harmoniously with one another. Most prominent and notable lighting fixtures were the Clay Paky’s lighting fixtures series. We were able to spot 70 Sharpy installed

BEHIND THE SCENESE T A M a r c h 2 0 1 6 59

around the stage and bleachers. Furthermore, a total of 20 Clay Paky B-eye K20, 22 Alpha Wash 1500 and 10 Alpha Spot HPE 1500 were used throughout the event. These lighting were able to perform their colour transition smoothly. Aside from the lights, The Sennheiser’s SKM2000 were used as one of the main microphone.

In such a huge event, sound consoles must have at least 200 channels for the sound engineers to monitor and Solid State Logic (SSL) was one of the brands that had the capabilities of monitoring 200 channels and more. Colourful illuminated pads were the first thing that caught our eyes of the SSL Live Consoles. A total of three SSL Live Consoles were spotted that night. Peter, a freelance sound engineer, took control of the SSL 500 Plus Live Console for the Front of House while Jim and a TV3 sound engineer, Zundun, took the SSL 300 and 500 Live Console for monitor respectively. We were able to examine these consoles up close and personal as we watched each sound engineer operate the console with ease. Jim who used the SSL 300 for monitor, claimed that the sound console was really convenient and great to use. “It’s a great console. Even though it was a little complicated when I first used it during the rehearsal, I was able to adjust myself as I spent time tweaking and operating the console. It takes time to be familiar with it, but once you are familiar with it, everything will go accordingly. One of the features that I enjoyed was reverbs. I have not tried most of the preset, but I do enjoy using the reverbs and its preamps are fantastic. Other features that I find convenient are the display panels. I am able to do pinching and even control the levels through the monitor screen. I think it is a powerful console and capable of handling these kind of events,” commented Jim. “For someone like me who enjoyed using analog consoles or older console, it was a huge change when I tried the SSL. There were so many faders and functions that I needed

to learn and understand. However, the SSL 500 could definitely get its job done,” commented Peter.

Through the hustle and bustle in Stadium Malawati, we were honoured to meet and greet the man behind MJ Event Management. MJ Event Management was appointed as one of the vendors for Anugerah Juara Lagu’s Acoustic and Lighting equipment. Manja having such a friendly personality and approachable presence gave us a firm handshake as we took time to get to know him and his company better.

How did it all begin?MJ Event started off as an event consultant company. I myself hosted corporate functions and concerts. As time went by, I felt that the company needed to grow and expand. I decided to venture deeper into the event industry. I began developing system and functions for the company

structure, putting myself out there in the market getting as much projects as I could. It was around 2003, I had the opportunity to work with our local television station, NTV7. Media Prima’s NTV7 offered us a job with their program “Rock Unite” which aired live every week. That was the turning point for MJ Event Management. My company believes in providing quality services and product. Through this job, we have been recognized for providing great services and I like to keep that throughout the years of service.

What happened next? They say opportunity does not come twice. I took that advice and I began exploring many acoustic and lighting equipment. Being in the event industry and working with broadcast company, I knew I needed to be on par with the latest audio visual technology. In order to sell my company services, I needed to provide services that are consistent and effective. As my company juggled between ad hoc events such as annual dinner, product launching and carnivals, we encountered many difficulties, during that era as there was a sudden increase in event companies. Everyone wanted to be an event manager and competition was real. Through perseverance and determination, I took the opportunity to see areas of my company that can be

Manja, Owner, MJ Event Management

BEHIND THE SCENESE T A M a r c h 2 0 1 6 60

developed and improved. Around 2007, I started to focus on audio and lighting and continued to progress along with Media Prima. My company had the chance to work on Carnival Jom Heboh 2010. As I continued investing in my company's inventory with better audio and lighting equipment, I got the opportunity to work on one of Astro's program, Dakwah Pencetus Ummah Season 1 and Season 2.That itself was an achievement for me to step foot into Astro programs. We were also given the opportunity to work on Super Spontan which received at least 5,000 audience in their finals in Melaka.

Please elaborate on some significant events you have done over the years in the event industry?Maharaja Lawak Mega 2015, was significant to me because it was one of my company events that fully used RCF speakers. The TT55 and TT33 series were superb because it was able to throw the sound throughout the venue. I was stunned, impressed and realized how powerful RCF speakers were. We used Sennheiser SKM500 and Sennheiser MI products as I felt they were able to work

together with the speakers. It was the right decision as the clients were impressed with our work. What makes this event even more significant was that we got awarded to work on Maharaja Lawak Mega 2016. Festival Anugerah Juara Lagu that was held in Dataran 1 Malaysia, Pantai Klebang, Melaka was definitely another significant event for me. A stunning audience of 20,000 watched the event. In that event, my company used RCF TT series again with SSL as the sound consoles. The outcome was superb, with the

BEHIND THE SCENESE T A M a r c h 2 0 1 6 61

SSL Live Console 500 Plus as the FOH and SSL Live Console 300 for monitor. The sound reproduced by the speaker were able to cancel the noise from the waves and winds. I was standing around 300m away from the source and was able to feel the vibration and there wasn’t any cancellation.

What are your comments on Anugerah Juara Lagu 30?The minimum requirement for AJL30 sound monitor console should be at least 200 channels with 5.1 surround sound capabilities. One thing came into my mind was the SSL Live Console. They were capable of providing these features. That is why I suggested to use the SSL in AJL30. Additionally, I wanted to test how the SSL will perform in this event. After today, I wasn’t disappointed at the outcome. There is something I would like to mention as well. Our client gave us a time frame for us to handover, which was on the 21st January 2016, and we manage to handover 2 days before the dateline. One tagline or motto that I always use is “Preparation before Operation”.

A successful event always comes down to a proper preparation. There is no hassle or problem if you have the preparation. Of course, there will always be some unforeseen circumstances, but if you are prepared, there is always a solution. When I was given the time frame, I had planned precisely the timing for installation of truss, speakers and lightings. Additionally, each division or team has their own system engineer where they will give instruction to their crew. I am glad and thankful to MJ crew member for being able to work in such a tight timeline. Along with various speakers, one would notice the RCF TT series we used for the event. There were 1 RCT TT series tower on both side of the stage. As for the lightings we mainly used Clay Paky lights coupled with other lighting brands such as PR Lighting. We used a total

of 40 LED Wash, PR-8120 for the event. I shared my idea on the lighting installation with the lighting engineers and they were satisfied with it. The Clay Paky Sharpy, Alpha Wash 1500, Alpha Spot HPE 1500 and B-eye k20 were astounding, the client loved it and enjoyed the lighting show as we tested. As for the main microphone, the Sennheiser SKM 2000 provided by the client was used. Although some artistes and talents brought their own, most were using the Sennheisers.

“I'd like to give my thanks to Acoustic & Lighting System for always supporting me. Mr. Yeo and Mr. Alexander have always been pushing, encouraging and supplying me with great equipment. My plans for my company would be to continue to share my experiences with others. I don’t aim to be a champion, but to share our event experience with others. We will continue to provide quality services and product to our client,” commented Manja.
