SAE Celebrates Its 40th YearSingapore and Malaysia Campuses however see the end

SAE Creative Media Institute has been a stepping stone for many in the industry to get involved with the production, post production and even installation and

live event segments. At one stage it was the only place to go to, if you had interest in all things audio. SAE has certainly come a long way and, with 54 campuses in 28 countries, is still recognised as one of the leading global creative media educators. Curriculum has been enhanced to keep up with the digital era and different interests but competition has also been coming into SAE’s domain. In Singapore for example the Polytechnics and more recently the Technical Institutes have started courses that offer an alternative to SAE, while demand for creative media courses across the city-state has declined.

Recent months have seen closure of SAE campuses within South-East Asia. To get a better understanding, ETA touched base with Deputy CEO of SAE Global, Joseph Anthonysz to give us his thoughts.

“Like any market leading business, SAE is constantly reviewing its global operations and identifying new ways to take our world-class creative media courses to more students around the world. We’re currently delivering programs to more than 10,000 aspiring creatives in the areas of audio, film, animation, design, web/mobile and related disciplines.

As part of our strategic review we recognised parts of the business and countries that would not contribute to our future plans and objectives, and that we would exit. This divestment strategy is deliberate and allows us to focus resources and capital into exciting growth opportunities in the US, UK, Europe, Australia and Middle East.

In some instances we have to make tough decisions about campuses that are not viable in the long-term.

In Singapore, for example, we decided to close the campus in the face of rising costs, declining local demand for creative media courses and increasing competition from other polytechnics.

We knew it was in the best interests of our students to close the campus rather than compromise on the quality of services, infrastructure and student experiences that we provide.

Similarly, we exited an agreement with our SAE Malaysia licensee last year on amicable terms, recognising the partnership was not sustainable.

The Thailand campus, located in Bangkok, is also owned and operated by a licensee and we will continue liaising with them to evaluate its long-term viability. No decision has been made to close the facility.”

Though SAE is still liaising with the Thailand campus licensee it is interesting to note that the GM, Daniel Choo, has already left his post.

The Indonesian campus on the other hand is certainly still operating and is a great education option for creative media students in the region. The campus, which recently underwent a $1 million upgrade, offers accredited courses including Certificates, Diplomas and Bachelor Degrees in audio, film, animation and music business.

The Production People Ups Its GameSINGAPORE: The Production People ("TPP") is a full-service technical production company providing premium quality audio, lighting and video equipment for all types of events. They take a no-compromise approach to their work and only use the best-in-class equipment. Along with a team of crew that knows how to use the gear to their full potential, the team focuses on exceeding expectation of their clients. With determination in building great relationship with their clients, they work hand-in-hand with them to deliver exceptional events that impresses each and every member of the audience. Some exceptional events that they have worked on would be The Podium Lounge F1 Party held in Ritz-Carlton Singapore and The Official Opening of China Cultural Centre in Singapore.

Clay Paky’s Mythos To Illuminate Darkness

TPP who had attended A&L's Clay Paky Open House in Singapore took the opportunity in increasing their inventory with another 12 Clay Paky's Mythos unit. The Mythos is a highly versatile and a highly advanced hybrid light. With a zoom range of 4° to 50° (Spotlight mode) and 2.5° aperture (Beam mode) it is truly a suitable fixture for various events. The Mythos comes with a CMY colour mixing and a spectacular 14 special colour filter, you can expect the wide variety of function these fixtures can do. 6 HQ dichroic rotating gobos and 18+1 fixed metal gobos, there should be no problem in choosing the right pattern for your function. Mythos has the brightness and ability to beam out a 160mm-diameter light and remains parallel for its entire length even at great distances.

Sheldon Gooi, Director of TPP, commented,"With the increasing amount of lights on shows and the brightness of LED Screens, we needed something brighter than our existing

inventory to cut through all the stage light. When I saw the Mythos at the launch, I immediately knew the future had arrived. Coupled with the excellent support we have received from Acoustic & Lighting for our existing inventory, I am confident this investment will propel our company to greater heights. With the addition of Mythos fixture in TPP inventory, TPP has a total of 100 Clay Paky product units consisting of Alpha Spot HPE700, Sharpy, Sharpy Wash 330, Aleda K10 Wash and now Mythos."

d&b Audio For Clear, Warm Coverage With Punch

TPP has expanded its audio inventory with 12 units of V8 three-way passive speakers, 4 units of V12 passive loudspeakers, 8 x V-SUB subwoofers, 4 units of J-INFRA cardiod infra subwoofers and 6 units of D80 amplifiers, adding to the already huge d&b Audio inventory in their arsenal.

“We have been using d&b audio for about six years and I must highlight that across the entire product range there is no product that has failed to deliver. The end-user experience is always a positive response. For us the d&b audio solutions are well accepted and proven. Plus the local support and factory support is great,” said Sheldon.

Sheldon adds, “Corporate events vary greatly. We felt that we were limited with our previous systems in terms of the type of venues that we can support but these new additions bring up our capabilities. In addition the technical crew at TPP are already familiar with d&b audio so it is a seamless experience for them.”

The new d&b audio additions were purchased from local distributor, Consolidated Audio Networks (CAN).

NEWSE TA M a r c h 2 0 1 6 09TPP Becomes First dLive OwnerSupplied through local distributor Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd, TPP took delivery of the Allen & Heath dLive recently and became the first production company to own the system in Singapore. The purchase consisted of the S5000 surface complemented with a DM48 MixRack.

“For us the dLive replaces our T112. It is a vast improvement in terms of the features and speed. The expandibility options are huge and amazing - it is future proof. To me it was a no-brainer in including the dLive as part of our inventory. Coupled with the excellent back-up and support from E&E, it was easy to go ahead with this purchase, after I had a chance to see the console in depth at the recent product launch in Singapore. We are confident that we will be able to maximize its features to the benefit of our clients” said Sheldon.

A&H’s dLive has been creating a stir within the region since its introduction last year. Providing ultra-flexible architecture, a powerful FPGA processing core, a comprehensive array of expansion, control and networking options, plus the intuitive Harmony user interface with gesture control, means dLive is geared to applications from rigorous touring and festivals to installation in prestigious live venues.

The dLive processing brain is housed in the MixRack, which uses the same processing engine, pioneered by the Allen & Heath R&D team using next generation FPGA technology. The 96k/96bit XCVI Core provides capacity for 128 inputs

with full processing and 16 dedicated stereo FX returns, offering 160 inputs to mix, plus a fully configurable 64 mix bus architecture, with full processing on all 64 mix channels. dLive incorporates the DEEP processing portfolio of embedded plugins, including Graphic EQs, Compressors, Multiband Compressors and Dynamic EQs, alongside its 16 slot FX racks, featuring Allen & Heath’s acclaimed range of FX emulations.

Mahajak Officially Announces New Showroom

THAILAND: Mahajak is an importer of world class audio and lighting products under the global brands of Harman Group (BSS, CROWN, dbx, JBL, Soundcraft, Martin, Harman/Kardon), as well as DENON, GENEVA, Tivoli, SHURE and an exclusive distributor of Mitsubishi Heavy Duty air conditioners in Thailand. As the Nana office is the headquarters of Mahajak Development and located in the business area of Bangkok, a large number of customers visit Nana’s showroom each day. The old showroom was showing signs of wear and tear and was also too small to showcase the wide variety of products distributed by the company. More importantly it did not portray Mahajak's vision to be a world class products distributor. Thus the company decided to move into a new showroom when the opportunity arose, that would enable them to showcase their solutions in a more conducive environment and create a better experience for customers. The “touch, hear and experience” aspect of their solutions in the new showroom is also expected to help customers make better purchase decisions.

The new showroom is located on the first and second floor of the new four-storey office building next to Mahajak's old building at Nana. The third floor is an office while the fourth floor is a multi-functional room called “M Hall”. The new showroom has a luxurious modern interior design that is decorated with wooden furnitures and glass display shelves. Customers are able to reach products and evaluate them more easily in the showroom.

The 1st floor space is 323.9 square meters and displays professional audio products and has a service corner. The 2nd floor space is 354 square meters and showcases consumer products such as home audio products, multimedia products and air conditioners. In addition, there are demonstration rooms for home theater system in order to present Dolby Atmos and DTS:X system. Furthermore, the multi-functional room or M Hall on the fourth floor is built for any internal events such as seminars including training and workshop. This room has already been used for events such as the Mahajak Pro Open House 2015 in August and Surrender Your Life to Sound which was a new product launch event for JBL and Harman multimedia products in November 2015.

Though the new Showroom has been effectively operating since July 2015, there were still minor improvements being made to ensure that standards were met. 1st February 2016 saw the new showroom being officially announced to the Public with special promotions being held till the end of February.

When ETA visited the new showroom in December last year, we also noticed some real cool gear displayed within the space that can easily be considered as collector's items. Audiophiles for sure will love to check out the items!

ETC Ion Training Attracts 100 Attendees In Taiwan

TAIWAN: Interest in basic Ion training is continuing to grow in Asia. From January 19th to 22nd, 2016, ETC collaborated with the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts (TCPA) and dealer Ming Li Engineering & Consultant Co., LTD. (MLEC), to conduct two training sessions in Taipei. A total of 100 students and industry professionals from across the island attended the classes. All the attendees received a certificate upon completion of the training, and seven participants won an ETCnomad mini-controller.

The training was held in Chungsing Hall, on the Neihu campus of TCPA and was led by Kuo Chien Chung, the senior technical specialist from the National Theater and Concert Hall. ETC Asia’s senior engineer, K.K. Yeung, who has 25 years of experience in the lighting industry, also provided hands-on training assistance for the classes. ETC, MLEC and TCPA together provided 16 Ion consoles, with three to four participants per console, making sure every participant had a chance to practice. The training content was based on the Ion Level One workbook and basic lighting concepts, including networking, DMX512, an introduction to Ion, and essential programming functions, like patch, cues, playback, submasters, effects, and more.

Before the training, there was a one-hour demonstration of ETC’s newest LED products, including ColorSource fixtures and Source Four LED luminaires. “The demo not only showed ETC’s new LED technology, but it also let attendees understand that the more familiar you are with console operation, the better you can control your show,” describes Desmond Yim, the regional sales manager for ETC Asia.

“With the right skills and experience, you don't need to worry about how sophisticated new LED technology is, what fixtures are on the rig, whether it is a moving light or a conventional light, or if it’s an ETC luminaire or from other brands.”

“The program was really successful,” says Sabrina Lee, a student from the Taipei National University of the Arts. Lee learned to use the Ion console from the manual by herself, and was happy that she finally got an opportunity to get proper training. Although Lee already used the Ion console on many shows, she can now be more confident with the steps she was using before.

“ETC consoles were the first thing that I learned in lighting. I really love ETC,” gushes Lee. “They help me

communicate with the audience through lighting.” She was one of the ETCnomad winners during the testing portion of the training.

Lan Linhan, an associate professor and the chair of the Drama department at the National Taiwan University of Arts, said that the training was rich in content and a good way for trainees to gain a comprehensive understanding of the console. “Each part is interconnected, which helped me better understand lighting control and get a clear view of what we need when choosing equipment for the department,” explains Lan. She added that ETC’s products are very user-friendly and easy to operate.

Qu Mixers Manage New Zealand Folk Festival

NEW ZEALAND: Allen & Heath’s Qu-32 compact digital mixers were used throughout the recent Auckland Folk Festival, managing FOH and monitor sound for all three stages.

The three stages comprised the Festival Stage, Mill Stage and new for 2016, the Village Stage. Selected by PA company, SoundandLight.co.nz, Qu-32 mixers were installed at FOH

and monitors on each stage, with AR2412 and AR84 racks for additional remote IO.

“I have managed the folk festival for about 15 years. It requires 14 hours of mixing a day so reliability is key, which is why we have always used A&H mixers,” commented Dave Hodge, Director and Engineer at PA company, SoundandLight.co.nz. “Due to the fabulous recall ability, we just use the compact QU-32 at FOH and monitors. Set up is so easy with scene recall for each band, song, individual instrument, and even a ‘just in case’ scenario, as acoustic groups often bring on an additional guest player. Two iPads are also an integral part of my set up, one to control the matrixes, sub send and groups, and another to manage EFX sends/returns and stereo returns for MCs and background music.”

2016 Off To A Great Start For Dynatech’s V 7000+ in North East IndiaINDIA: Dynatech’s V7000+, which is the new and improved version of the immensely popular V7000 power amplifier, has definitely upped the ante in North East India! In the early months of 2016 alone, the V7000+ boasts an unbelievable sales growth in the region, as some of the most recognized audio reinforcement vendors there have added multiple pieces of the Dynatech V7000+ amplifiers to their existing inventory.

In terms of numbers, Siliguri based Maitri Sound Service, and Chaurangi Sound Service based out of Mainaguri have each purchased three units of the V7000+ power amplifiers. On the other hand, Falakata based rental company Pappu Sound Service, CoochBehar based company Bishwakarma Sound, and Mirig based Pathibhara Sound Service have each purchased two units of the V7000+ power amplifiers. Each of the above purchases took place through The Sound Control – Sonotone's key dealer of Dynatech products in the North East, based out of Siliguri.

Speaking about the phenomenal sales performance of the Dynatech V7000+ power amplifiers in the North East, Atanu Mal of The Sound Control shared, “Ever since the first week of January, we’ve had clients enquiring about the V7000+

quiet keenly, and several of them have turned into successful purchases. I think what works for the unit is the fact that it offers enhanced features and even better performance than the already brilliant V7000 - that too at an unbeatable price point. Customers compliment the unit on the clean sound, unmatched power, brilliant stability and overall rugged finish. Plus, when you add in the amazing service and support backup from Sonotone, there’s little doubt why people believe the V7000+ to be a truly amazing package and an obvious crowd favourite.”

CSP Adds Robe BMFL WashBeamsSINGAPORE: CSP Productions Pte Ltd recently took delivery of 12 units of Robe Colourstrobe and 60 units of Robe BMFL WashBeams. Kenny Heng, Managing Director, CSP, comments, “Three points dictated our decision to purchase the BMFL. First it is a more mature product

within the BMFL family. The bigger lens offered enables for better light output. Second, lighting designers are demanding for options to play with the shutter plates, which the BMFL offers as a seamless experience and finally the support from Robe Asia Pacific - which is excellent.”

It would be interesting to note that CSP is actually a pioneer user of Robe fixtures in Singapore, when they bought their first Colorspot and Colorwash in 2006 when Robe started to make its presence felt in Asia.

The BMFL saw their first action on the 20th and 21st of February during the Combined Church Chinese New Year celebrations that was held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Design Extraordinaire - The CURV 500® SystemEvery now and again something extraordinary comes

along, something so radical that it will fundamentally revolutionize and transform the existing industry as

we know it. A product endowed with such design difference that it will set the stage for the next phase of design criteria. Such a product is the LD System’s “CURV 500® System”, a portable active satellite line array sound system producing high-definition audio quality.

The CURV 500® System is a breakthrough in product design, winning the prestigious “German Design Award 2016″ for its overall concept. Its attention to detail is simply quite remarkable.

The CURV 500’s modular design offers genuine flexibility in the three main configuration categories, the CURV 500® Power Set, the CURV 500® Entertainment Set and the CURV 500® Audio Video Set. They offer multiple preset configurations, ranging from a single satellite speaker and sub-woofer combination, expandable to a wide variety of combinations to suit any application, making the systems truly scalable.

A system of just four satellite speakers, at an impedance of 16 ohms each, and a single sub-woofer can deliver up to 460 watts at 122 db-SPL. Each satellite, just 12cm by 12cm,

weighing only 1.73 kg, is connected to the other by simply sliding and clicking it together. No cables are used.

A special patented SmartLink® plug-in device is the key to the satellite system’s wireless connectivity. Up to four satellites and one sub-woofer can be connected to a single SmartLink® device. The design is such that, as each satellite slides into the other, it forms an angle and dispersion pattern of a line array, giving it a wide three-dimensional soundscape.

Built into the sub-woofer is a basic compact 4 channel mixer with digital effects, Bluetooth® wireless technology to connect smart gadgets and a unique satellite set-up selector. With this selector, all one needs to do is switch between

one, two, three and four satellites, and the system will automatically configure and adjust itself accordingly.

Each satellite speaker is built with the WaveAhead® technology, which is three one-inch high-frequency drivers positioned vertically and in front of a single four-inch full- range driver, with a crossover point at 2500Hz. The expandable vertical dispersion pattern of 10 degrees and horizontal dispersion pattern of 110 degrees, of each satellite makes the system truly scalable.

The CURV 500’s impressive sound pressure and superior balance are unprecedented for its size and a product of its category.

Projection Mapping As Performance ArtAs we move deeper into 2016, the effects of projection mapping are becoming more prominent and versatile. In our Special Feature this issue, we explore a new trend making waves in spatial augmented reality: Projection Mapping As Performance Art

By Elissa Nadine

Even the rookie-ist rookie knows what projection mapping is. Taking the inanimate and making it come alive has been around for decades with one of the first public

displays coming from Disneyland in 1969. From being

mapped onto buildings and warped into various shapes, projection mapping can be seen in interactive advertising like Nokia(Left) and BMW, celebration of events like Singapore National Day 2015and now, in performance art.

Think performance art and you might stray in the direction of Live Theater. One of the longest but greatest uses of projection mapping in theatre can be found in the award-winning play based on Mark Haddon's 2003 novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Currently running on Broadway in New York, the unusual story uses a full projection mapped set while telling the story of a genius child mathematician with Asperger's syndrome. Audiences first in London and now in New York get to see the world through the eyes of Christopher by the use of graphic layers and LED pixel mapping, playing both video and lighting simultaneously.

Here's the trailer as seen on the Tony Awards Youtube page (Below)

1

Page 37: ETA_Tablet_2016_03

From stage to real time, the use of projection mapping has now gone a step further and come to life on moving human subjects.

The trend was first brought into the public eye by Producer Nobumichi Asai who used face-tracking technology to project a series of images onto a model's face. The projection happened in real time and showed various looks that could be achieved within a 2-minute video.

Check it out here:

Nobumichi was looking into the future of stage makeup and it was even considered that as technology progresses, actors can be 'aged' with projection mapping instead of uncomfortable prosthetics. This trend was also recently picked up by retail giant, Sephora when they launched the new Kat Von D makeup line, Kat Von D Beauty. The creative studio behind the project used custom software and a high-end tracking system to project 3D animation all over Von D's neck, torso and face.

From face to body, the latest jump to 'WOW' came with the world's first live tattoo video mapping event.

Portugese video-mapping twins Oskar & Gaspar introduced the world to Ink Mapping in a special Lisbon project. Taking the bare skin of models combined with the art from Eduardo Cavellucci and Igor Gama, the duo brought to life existing tattoos and created new ones. From a snake slithering up a model's torso to a manta ray floating across a thigh, the video is a work of art all on its own. The official website stresses that there was absolutely no post-production used in the editing process of the short film so all images were shot in live action.

Check out the work of the twins and watch the full video here:

Video mapping is by no means a new discovery or technique. However, its uses and technology are only bound by the minds behind it. If you are thinking of incorporating projection mapping into your arsenal or wanting new and fresh ideas, check out the websites below for some inspiration.

Protec Delivers Real-Time Motion Tracking At The World Air Gamesd3 Technologies, BlackTrax, Barco and Christie at the fore

Protec, the region’s largest event rental company used its BlackTrax real-time motion tracking system and its d3 Technologies’ 4x4pro media servers to deliver some

complex projection mapping for the grand opening ceremony for the World Air Games 2015 held at Sky Dive Dubai.

Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) ushered in the 4th FAI World Air Games (WAG) at an impressive and colourful opening ceremony on December 3, 2015 in front of an appreciative audience of nearly 5,000 spectators, which included officials and contestants from over 50 countries.

"It was great," said Polish microlight team member Kajetan Ruks. "I've never seen anything like it before. And now, I want to see it again." Joao Franciso, who came from Portugal to compete in the air navigation race said, "On a scale of one to 10, I give it 20!"

Protec was appointed by Dynamic Motion to provide the projection for the WAG 2015 opening ceremony. Projection was required on the 54m x 21m backdrop screen as well as the central 20m x 20m stage area and a 6m diameter inflatable sphere that would be revealed and raised during the show as part of the spectacle while being projected on. Being an outdoor event and along the beach front, wind was always going to be Protec’s biggest challenge. An earlier decision to build a hard set backdrop to overcome the wind factor was upended and a fabric screen was to be used instead as the backdrop projection surface. While the projection on the main backdrop screen and the stage floor seemed straightforward, the big challenge to projection map the moving sphere continuously would be a first.

To Protec, it meant the use of BlackTrax, a real-time motion tracking system integrated with a d3 media server, both of which would help track the moving video surface (sphere)

DUBAI

Page 39: ETA_Tablet_2016_03

LIVEE TA M a r c h 2 0 1 6 39

while projecting onto it, with the 3D mapping visualised and handled in real-time. This would be the first time this 6D tracking system would be used to motion track a moving sphere. With the BlackTrax technology, 3D moving objects, in this case - the sphere, could move, spin, rotate in 6 dDoF (6 Degrees of Freedom) and still be tracked. The reason this system made this different from any regular encoder based tracking system was its ability to adjust content due to adverse weather moving the sphere. Traditional encoders would not correct this issue. True to form, the wind did play its part in blowing the screen, but Protec, with some accurate planning, delivered some impressive projection mapping.

The opening ceremony started off with a fusion dance act that sought to embrace the heritage of the UAE with the ultra-modern focus on development. Next were a series of zip-line performances that included a narration of the history of the nation coupled with the vision set by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Dropping in on the stage, aerial performers dressed as skydivers and paramotor pilots flew over the audience suspended on cable lines taking the astounded audience on a theatrical flight over Dubai. The sphere was raised dramatically at this point with moving earth content, showcasing historical elements of the games along with key statistics ending with the flags of the participating nations. The show ended with the lighting of the Games torch with a crescendo of fireworks.

10 units of Christie Roadster 20k projectors were used for the main screen blend, 8 units of Barco 30k projectors for the central stage area all of which were controlled from the FOH with all signals run over fibre and a further 6 units of Barco 30k projectors used for the 6m diameter inflatable moving sphere. With d3 4x4 pro media servers, Protec were able to render and map seamless edge-blended images onto the unique circular surface area.

With the challenges met head on by the production team, the show was seen as a resounding success with great reactions from the audience.

Terming the opening ceremony as truly unforgettable, Dr Grubbstrom, FAI President said, “Dubai has shown that we are together capable of staging such a wide variety of sport on one platform. I am convinced that this common goal will bring us closer to the Olympic dream.”

In terms of significance, projection mapping on a moving sphere on this scale would be a first. In the words of Gilray Densham, President & CEO CAST Group of Companies Inc, the developer of the software, "No one has ever (that I know of), delivered dynamic content onto a moving sphere of this size in a real show environment. You guys did the pioneering to make it all happen." Its significance therefore, wouldn't just be to the audience viewing the show or to the client who wanted this theatrical effect, but to the industry as a whole.

www.productiontec.com

To better appreciate Protec's efforts check out the video. Pay attention to 1.21 minute frame where the mapping of the sphere is introduced.

Clay Paky Delivers Ultimate Impact On Knockout Circuz

AUSTRALIA

The Mythos shows off its pedigree

Indoor ‘hardstyle’ festival Knockout Circuz returned to iconic Sydney venue The Hordern Pavilion at the end of last year, with lighting designer Arian Yeganeh creating a spectacular

8-hour light show using Clay Paky Mythos, Stormy and Sharpy fixtures.

Promoted by organisers Hard Styles United (HSU) as “one of the most spectacular and intense indoor rave arenas [we] have ever created” with “hours of lasers, spectacular lighting shows and crystal clear audio,” Knockout Circuz saw a line up of such international artists as Technoboy and Bioweapon.

Leading event supplier Newtone Entertainment supplied 24 Sharpys, along with 24 Mythos and 13 Stormy CC strobes partially sub hired from Chameleon Touring Systems, to the massive underground rave.

“HSU wanted us to create an underground circus world, with a different theme and look for every DJ,” explained Matthew Newton, MD of Newtone Entertainment, who worked closely with both Yeganeh and HSU Events Production Designer Robert Francis to meet the creative brief. “The Mythos were ideal as their versatility meant we could create a range of different high-impact looks with beams and gobos zoomed out to immerse the crowd.”

The Mythos is both a spot and beam light. It produces an extraordinarily large beam with perfectly defined edges and a zoom that ranges from 4° to 50°. It also features a completely redesigned visual effects disc, which may be superimposed on all the gobos, both in and out of focus.

The Knockout Circuz set-up saw a large wall of visuals stretching the entire width of the space to combat the very low trim height on stage. The Mythos and Sharpys were used to shoot rapidly moving beams from the stage out over the dance floor.

“The Mythos’ optics and brightness from a 470W lamp are its most impressive features,” continued Newton. “We needed brightness to cut through all the LED screens, Sunstrips and lasers.”

Yeganeh’s design also employed the super bright LED Stormy CC strobes to cut through the video heavy show. The fixtures’ light source is a strip of powerful flicker-free RGBW LEDs with an enhanced flash effect thanks to its parabolic reflector.

“I was able to use the Stormy CCs for both blinder and classic strobe looks without the need for more fixtures,” he explained. “The client was very happy as we could also make them flash in a wide range of different colours creating some fantastic looks.”

Knockout Circuz took place in December at The Hordern Pavilion, Sydney. Show Technology is the official Clay Paky Distributor for Australia and New Zealand.

Counties Fitness Ups The TempoNEW ZEALAND

16-box Proel Axiom line array feature with enough grunt to power even a small rock and roll venue

They don't do things by halves at Counties Fitness. Open around the clock and with 40 energy packed classes per week and the largest selection of fitness equipment in

South Auckland, the Pukekohe gym can also boast a seriously grown up sound reinforcement system for its main workout studio.

When the pioneering New Zealand fitness business decided that a healthy dose of motivational music would move the club's clientele to the pinnacles of achievement in the brand new 250 sq metre workout studio, they turned to Jansen Professional Audio and Lighting for inspiration. Jansen's director Simon Adams and Rob Teo of Navigator Audio came up with something special – no less than a 16-box Proel Axiom line array, with enough grunt to power even a small rock and roll venue.

"They wanted to make a statement," says Adams, "and insisted on a sound system that would produce crystal clear audio. Our solution was to spec a system with a ton of headroom, so that it would run mostly on idle with plenty in reserve to handle the big dynamics, rather than revving flat out all the time which can be very tiring to listen to. Axiom was the ideal choice in terms of offering phenomenal value for money, plus it sounds great and doesn’t suffer from the uncontrollable low-mid energy that some line arrays have."

The system setup was configured as left / right flown arrays of 8 AX2065A active dual 6.5-inch line array elements each side, with two SW215A active dual 15-inch flown subwoofers at the top of each hang. Recessed under the stage are a further four SW121A 21-inch active folded horn subwoofers to complete a four-way frequency split with some serious low end.

The room itself was pretty lively, according to Counties Fitness' Owner and General Manager Ian Wilson, and presented a few challenges to the Jansen design crew. "The speakers were installed before the new flooring went down and I was a

little concerned about the amount of reverberation," he said. "But once the flooring was installed the room calmed down significantly. We also decided to add some acoustic treatment in the roof space in the shape of custom colour acoustic clouds from Autex, a local specialist acoustics treatment manufacturer.

As a company that prides itself on its professionalism, a system capable of delivering outstanding audio quality and doing so, day in day out, was a must have," emphasises Wilson. "Jansen was selected as our provider because the company understood what we were trying to achieve, and had a system to match. Unlike other Fitness Clubs who often try and hide their audio systems I wanted a system that made people sit up and take notice.

We already had Proel speakers in other areas of the Club, but I was not aware of Axiom up to now. The system has been a revelation compared to the passive JBL speakers we used in the old studio. No matter what we throw at it – from delicate acoustic guitar pieces to re-mixed aerobic tracks – the Axiom system takes it all in its stride.

The feedback has unsurprisingly been great since it really is overkill for the space. One major improvement has been the ability to tune the room so the levels are consistent regardless of the location of the participant – the old system was often too loud at the front and too quiet at the back of the room.”

How has the new Axiom loudspeaker system impacted on Counties Fitness' business? "There is no question that the new studio together with the Axiom line array has contributed to the continued growth of the Club," concludes Wilson. "The studio is unique and the Axiom line array gives us a point of difference that has helped us to cement our domination of the group fitness market in our local area."

CG Sound Goes All Out For PreSonusPHILIPPINES

MDI Pro also installs the first Presonus CS18ai mixer controller in the Philippines

CG SOUND is a brand new recording studio located at the heart of Quezon City with 3 Isolation booths and a control room. The studio sits on the second level of a

house like building. MDI Pro used Quadratic Panels to create a medium to large effect on these small rooms. The layout is largely designed for vocal dubbing, with the third booth configured to be capable of housing a full set drum kit which can directly pound on the 'full floating“ floor system - Quiet offices below are spared from the high noise levels generated from the studio above. Drop-in a few square feet of fuzzy carpets, and the hallway (which is also the main airlock system between the isolation booths) can actually become the fourth recording booth of the studio complete with microphone and headphone outlets. Just beside the rooms is a pantry where artists, engineers, producers and visitors can have free flowing coffee/tea, or watch TV in the conference room. A lounging chair sits way behind the console table where the client can have a relaxed distanced listening of the mix. Access to free Wifi is also available.

Heading the project was Dino Dumlao, an experienced audio consultant and sound engineer and a graduate of Audio Institute of America and Berklee college of Music. Dino also studied under the tutelage of THE BEATLES recording engineer and rock and roll hall of fame, singer, songwriter and record producer Peter Miller. He has toured with the Rolling Stones , and most of the rest of the British invasion. Dino currently works with the country's top engineers and artists. For the CG Sound acoustics design, MDI Pro tapped Architect Francis Galero, an industry leader in acoustics design in major broadcast studios and churches. Architect Francis also works as an audio and acoustics consultant for MDI Pro.

Alongside Architect Francis was Jobert Lebios, the technology evangelist / sound engineer for MDI Pro and PreSonus who is in charge of what equipment went in at CG Sound. For Dino and Francis, it had to be all PreSonus - except for the mics

and air-conditioning:)). PreSonus is known worldwide for it's audio recording gear so it's a no-brainer. Installed in CG Sound were 2 units PreSonus Sceptre 8s, a PreSonus CS18ai control surface, a PreSonus RM16 mixer-interface, a PreSonus Monitor Station 2, a PreSonus Blue Tube pre-amp, 2 units of PreSonus HP4 headphone amps, 6 units PreSonus HD7 headphones, a custom built Windows super computer with insane speed, and vocal and instrument mics from Rode. Of course, a PreSonus Studio One 3 DAW was also installed. The CG Sound project was special to MDI Pro since it was the first installation project of the CS18ai mixer controller. The CS18ai is not only a mixer-controller but a DAW controller as well and it is the perfect companion for the Studio One 3 DAW. Other brands also have their own controllers but CS18ai is a fraction of their price. Every aspect of the the CS18ai was designed to help the engineer mix with ease and reliability. RGB select buttons make it easier to identify channels. Layers and mixes are based on colour. True touch-sensitive faders know when fingers make contact so fader will never fight the user who can experience real automation functionality in the studio.

The CS18ai lights your way through mixing with 146 illuminated buttons, with a 4.3 touch sensitive LCD screen and 2011 LED level laders. If you need to control it, it lights up. CG Sound is Now Open for business. Now, did you know that Albert Einstein thought in music, used to daydream in music and saw his life in terms of music? What is your life's music.

Hive By Wala Wala Moves To A New BeatSINGAPORE

The new Restaurant and Bar Hits The Sweet Spot with d&b audio

Wala Wala Cafe Bar is an institution in the entertainment space within Singapore, having been established for 23 years now at the popular Holland

Village area and continues to still rake in the crowd. The brand recently had the opportunity to expand and took full advantage of a new 13,880 sq.ft space near the Singapore river front, to open its second venue. Called Hive By Wala Wala, the one floor, street level space, is adjoined to the Furama Riverfront Hotel and operates from 12pm.

The huge space has indoor and outdoor seating that caters for 400 patrons. The indoor area features a huge dining area that transforms into a bar in the later part of the night that features live bands and DJ music. The venue has its own kitchen that allows it to serve food all through its operating hours. A merchandising corner sells “Hive by Wala Wala” merchandise and is adjoined by a wine retail space, that offers specially selected wines for customers to purchase. The merchandising space is shared by a Deli station and cake counter. A private room, closer to the stage is also available for private dinners or functions. A space has been set aside for a planned Cigar Room, awaiting for official approval. A rare sight in Singapore, is an “Artist” room just beside the stage for performers, which goes without saying is much appreciated by the performers. An elongated bar is strategically placed for maximum effect as it can be viewed from wherever you are seating. Display screens at the back and top of the bar run promotional messages to catch the patrons' attention.

The outdoor space features a pool table and strategically placed TV monitors that are hooked up to the cable TV to cater to sports fans. “We have segregated the space so that customers can enjoy the atmosphere without being distracted or frustrated,” said owner, Stanley Yeo. “The indoor space is for those who want to enjoy good music whereas the outdoor space caters to those who want to watch their favourite sports.”

The new space allows the brand to extend its food service not only for hotel guests but also for office workers within the area. “This is a casual space offering local and western food choices and in the evenings even Yakitori options.” Indeed the space is family friendly as well, where there is even a diaper changing room. “With such a huge space it only made sense for us to maximise the use of the space where we saw the opportunity to offer additional services,” said Stanley.

The furnishing is kept simple - cement flooring with wooden chairs and tables. Yet it still feels warm and inviting, without overwhelming the patron. One other item that has been added to the space were iPads for orders. With Singapore's labour crunch it is not surprising that the space has locked in iPads placed underneath every table. The system is easy to use, enables patrons to order their food and drinks comfortably and frees up service staff to serve and clean up the tables – creating a great experience for the patrons.

Page 45: ETA_Tablet_2016_03

The Audio ExperienceWala Wala is known for its live music, where the Holland Village venue features different bands on different days. That well worked and accepted concept is continued at Hive By Wala Wala. The music offered is of mixed genre from Pop, Rock to Jazz and Contemporary.

Stanley Yeo has strong interest in music but more importantly has the ears to know a good system set-up. It might surprise many to know that though there was an architect involved, Stanley took personal interest in ensuring the space was “made for music”. “Being part of the hotel meant that we had to pay attention to music sipping out and so the first thing we did was to ensure that we had double glazed doors. We also incorporated triple layers of Rockwool within the ceilings and pillars to help absorb the sound. For the walls behind the stage I designed the multi-layered acoustic wooden panels and the cushions with fabric that would disperse or absorb the feedback from the bands.”

Stanley and his team also took time to visit different brand distributors to select the sound system for the space. “We knew what we wanted to achieve. As the space is huge we needed a system that would offer not only even coverage but clarity, warmth and the oomph for patrons to enjoy the music.” Their search ended at the doorsteps of Consolidated Audio Networks (CAN). The full sound system was supplied, installed and integrated by CAN.

The main dining space indoor, features 6 units of d&b audio Yi10 loudspeakers. The speakers are all ceiling mounted and evenly spaced as left and right configurations across the space, split into three sets. 4 units of d&b audio Yi-Subwoofers are placed under the stage, with all the speakers being driven by 2 units of d&b audio 30D amplifiers. Though it may seem that there isn't enough speakers to cover the space, it works well. “Both the bands and the patrons are happy with the sound system. It is crisp, clear and offers sufficient coverage,” said a pleased Stanley.

With regards to the choice of the d&b audio Yi10 loudspeakers, Chad Batchelor of CAN added, “When we were approached and saw the venue plans, we knew we needed a system that was able to deliver constant SPL and coverage. On top of that, there are plans by the venue to bring in high profile acts from overseas – that is why we felt that d&b will fit into the main FOH as it is a rider friendly PA and likewise for the Midas Console that is installed.”

Stage monitors comprise of 6 units of Turbosound TMW112 Coaxial stage monitors driven by Turbosound 4 channel DP40 amps with DSP. Provision is made for 6 units of Behringer P16 in ear monitoring system for the performers. Also featured are Shure microphones for vocals and Audio-Technica microphones for the instruments.

The Private room features 2 units of Turbosound Nuq802 8” loudspeakers whereas the outdoor space features 4 units of Turbosound Nuq102 10” loudspeakers. A further 3 units of Turbosound Nuq 102 are featured in the smoking area. The planned Cigar room features 2 units of Turbosound Nuq 122 12” loudspeakers. 4 units of Eurocom AX 6240 amplifiers drive the Turbosound speakers.

FOH features 1 unit of Midas PROC2C-CC 64 channel digital console with 1 unit of Midas DL 251 48in 16out Channel Fixed I/O for main mixing duties. A Midas M32C Rackmount Mixer handles the P16 in ear monitors. A Midas Klark Teknik DN9650 Network Bridge ensures that the 96K sample rate signal is downed to 48K for the M32C. A Midas Klark Teknik KT-Dante Card is used to connect the Network Bridge and the M32C Mixer.

The entire space has been divided into 6 Zones for easy manageability of the speakers. 1 unit of Audac R2 Multi-Zone Digital Audio Matrix system in the Rack room handles the zoning functions. The system is complemented with 3 units of Audac Digi AIO Wall panels for easy control by staff.

“As Stanley was particular and wanted to ensure top quality, he had also ensured that cabling and connectors were of high standards. So we used Neutrik connectors and Koltz cables throughout the installation,” stated Chad Batchelor from CAN. “We do not generally see this sort of quality cables in an entertainment venue and so it was pleasing that Stanley was insistent on quality cables,” added Chad.

CAN also installed Robe lighting fixtures that are controlled via Sunlight software with a Smoke Factory Haze machine also installed on a pillar for effects. The space also features a projector and screen and has 32 amps phase power outlets in case it is needed. “The space can easily be used for events

and we have even made provisions for Car Launches. Moving a few potted plants, placing a ramp, opening the low railing and our large glass door panels would allow for cars to be brought into the space. Thus the lights, projector and screen together with the audio system would easily accommodate such events,” said Stanley who obviously had thought this through.

Colin Oliveiro and Ryan Sofian of CAN were instrumental in providing technical support as well as training for the venue's sound engineers. Colin highlighted that the venue's sound engineers were familiar with the console that was used at Wala Wala in Holland Village and they had to be convinced that the Midas console would enable them to perform perfectly as well. “Once they got to play with the console, they began to appreciate the features and qualities and now they are comfortable using the console,” said Colin.

Hive By Wala Wala certainly seems ready for the next phase of the Brand's growth. For the local bands as well as up and coming talents this is a space that will entertain their ambitions and for the patrons we are certain this will become the next big watering hole for many.

Nimibutr Stadium Upgrades Sound SystemTHAILAND

EV chosen as the prefered sound system

Constructed in the heart of the vibrant metropolis of Bangkok, Nimibutr Stadium is an indoor sports arena used mainly for concerts, basketball, futsal and boxing.

Part of Thailand’s national stadium complex, it was opened in 1963 and has a seating capacity of 5,600. The stadium hosts many important tournaments, including the Asian Games and AFC Futsal Championship.

As a venue that hosts international sports competitions, the sound system in the stadium was recently updated to meet the standards defined by the international governing body of football. The project was entrusted to Bosch-certified partner, Auvis (Thailand) Co., Ltd., to upgrade the entire pro-audio system with products from Electro-Voice.

Auvis proposed a solution combining EVH (horn loaded) and EVF (front loaded) series loudspeakers powered by CPS4.10

and CPS4.5 amplifiers. A combination of EVH-1152D and EVF-1122S models work together to provide seamless, full-bandwidth coverage throughout the stadium, ensuring excellent speech intelligibility for announcements along with a powerful audio experience for fans. The main EVH arrays are flown above and around the venue’s large four-sided central display; the EVF boxes are mounted underneath to serve as fills and address the playing field. The system is controlled via EV’s NetMax N8000 digital matrix processors, running an IRIS-Net software configuration.

It goes without saying that Nimibutr Stadium is impressed with their new system and the professional service provided by Auvis throughout the whole project.

Adelaide Convention Centre Features State-Of-The-Art Grid System

AUSTRALIA

Apart from HME-branded solutions and Prolyte Truss, venue features world’s largest implementation of Kinesys solutions

The Adelaide Convention Centre’s new West Building, part of an ongoing $400 million expansion of the facility in the state capital of South Australia, has had all of

its rigging, trussing and flying needs designed, supplied and installed by Sydney engineering and distribution firm, HME Services. In addition to supplying their own HME-branded banner hoists, smoke curtains and lighting bars, HME have also designed and installed the world’s largest implementation of UK manufacturer Kinesys DigiHoist digital chain motor control system. With 167 hoists across 32 individual grids controlled by 22 DigiHoist eight-channel controllers, the system is even larger than its counterpart in London’s O2 Arena.

The grid system, installed into exhibition halls L, M and N, consists of 32 individual moveable grids tiltable in two axes, is capable of stunning, unique looks, and can be controlled by

one staff member safely through wired or wireless controllers. HME used its own in-house engineering and manufacturing to design and build the system, supplemented by products it distributes in Australia, including Prolyte and Verlinde Stagemaker.

With one load cell per hoist, and load and position feedback, there’s overload and underload protection for each hoist and the grid as a whole, ensuring ultimate safety for audiences and workers alike. Encoder control and programmable presets let staff bring the grid in and out for loading and set-up at the touch of a button, as well as snap to standard states.

“The new grids have drastically reduced our rigging time,” says Matthew Stanton, Technical Director at The Adelaide Convention Centre. “For our standard conference set-up in a single hall, it’s down to a couple of staff and four hours. No

Page 49: ETA_Tablet_2016_03

PROJECTSE TA M a r c h 2 0 1 6 49

need to focus lights with a lift, and we just drop down to rig drapes and projectors. It’s a big labour saving; we used to roll out truss, motors and lights from the store. Now, most equipment is pre-installed, and we just drop the truss down to the right height, plug in our lighting desk, and focus.”

“That’s the premise of the space,” adds Glenn Harris, Director of HME. “It’s quick, efficient and very different from what you get in any other venue in Australia, or even in the Asia-Pacific region. In designing it, we looked at all our options with regard to lifting standards, dual breaking, load cell methodologies, encoder based position controls, variable or fixed speed chain hoists, cable segregation, trusses, rigging points, services, cable management, and budgetary requirements. The end result looks elegantly simple, which speaks to the amount of design that went into it.”

As Australian distributors for the Prolyte Group, HME chose to install Prolyte H40V heavy duty truss for its untouchable strength characteristics. “HME worked with Prolyte to design a custom connection for the corners of the truss,” elaborates Glenn. “This enabled the chain hook to attach to the corners of the truss, removing the need for slings. That way, we could achieve head height and get a much cleaner look.”

Powering the grids are Stagemaker SR10 chain hoists from German manufacturer Verlinde Stagemaker, also proudly distributed by HME. With double braking and a T800 chain, the SR10s achieve an 8-to-1 safety factor and can move one tonne at eight metres a minute. HME’s own ProBatten product were fitted for power and signal distribution, with one run carrying two 40 amp power circuits, and the other audio, DMX, fibre, and Cat6.

With each’s grids ability to move 45 degrees in two axes, cable management became the biggest challenge of the installation. HME designed and built a completely custom solution. “At the end of each truss we built a knuckle that allowed two axes of movement,” illustrates Glenn. “We then ran cable management down one side and data down the other. As the grid tilts, its centre of mass moves and it can swing off axis by 600mm, so we built it to handle that degree of freedom. There’s a linear slide in the roof that releases that freedom as the grids tilts and rocks off axis. The cable management simply follows across.”

The grid’s control system was designed in the UK by Kinesys itself. Hand-held wired pendants, connected to HME’s custom built points around the exhibition hall walls, allow for quick and easy fly-ins and fly outs via five presets, Kinesys’s Vector control software unleashes the full creative capability of the grids, providing comprehensive individual motor control. A Kinesys-designed and HME-built control cabinet handles administration and control of all emergency stops, multiple pendants and multiple operation modes, all designed by Kinesys, whose staff also made the trip to Adelaide for sign-off at commissioning.

“This is the biggest implementation of a DigiHoist system that Kinesys have ever done,” Glenn emphasises. “From the HME side, everything is custom made, including the upper slide, hinges and the mount point mechanism. This system has the most fixed positioning load cell chain hoist axes, the greatest range of functionality, and the broadest control we’ve ever implemented. We can also happily say it exceeds Australian Standards.”

In addition to the exhibition hall grid, HME also fitted out the building’s Western Corridor with nine HME banner hoists, which are wirelessly controlled via pendant, enabling one staff member to re-brand all foyers with ease. In the Northern Ballroom, HME installed their ProBatten extruded lighting bars to a structural grid above the ceiling tiles, fitted out with power, signal, data and DMX to supply the Centre’s installed range of lighting fixtures and loudspeakers. Showing the depth of their product offering, HME also installed the smoke curtaining system that locks off the foyers in case of emergency.
