• VENTAJAS: garantiza una VM y un VT, disminuye el trabajo respiratorio,ofrece descanso a los músculos respiratorios
• DESVENTAJAS: Puede haber aumento de las presiones de la vía aérea si hay hiperinsuflación, si no se ajusta el flujo ni la sensibilidad adecuadamente puede haber aumento del trabajo, si se prolonga puede haber atrofia muscular

• Frecuentemente se usa como modo de weaning• IMV: FR programadas independiente del esfuerzo
ventilatorio, entre ellas el paciente puede hacer un esfuerzo
• SIMV: Las ventilaciones mandatorias están sincronizadas con el esfuerzo respiratorio del paciente. Se combina con PSV cuando el Vt del esfuerzo respiratorio del paciente es bajo (espacio muerto)

• VENTAJAS: El paciente puede controlar la profundidad, duración y el flujo de cada respiración, flexibilidad en el soporte ventilatorio
• DESVENTAJAS: El nivel excesivo de soporte puede llevar a alcalosis respiratoria, hiperinflación, trigger inefectivo; puede ser inefectivo en caso de una resistencia aumentada

• BiPAP cuando se le adiciona un “refuerzo” a la inspiración

• DESVENTAJAS: En no invasiva puede haber fugas de aire, problemas relacionados con la interfase, hiperinflación en caso de CPAP elevado

• La ventilación mecánica es una medida de soporte de gran importancia en la UCI y una de las medidas de soporte más importantes en el paciente crítico, es fundamental conocer los principios fisiológicos y los efectos sistemicos de la ventilación mecánica para lograr el objetivo terapéutico y evitar daño secundario al uso de la ventilación mecánica.
