Description
The PerkinElmer Universal QTA Burner Mount is designed to mount the flame-
heated QTA (QTA=quartz tube atomizer) for MHS-10, MHS-15, and FIAS
systems on PerkinElmer atomic absorption spectrometers.
The burner mount installs on the burner head of the AA spectrometer. The QTA
rests in a hinged bracket. When the bracket is in the down position the QTA is
located in the spectrometers sample beam and is heated by the flame. When the
bracket is in the up position the QTA is removed from the sample beam and is not
heated.
Note that the QTA is referred to as the quartz cell or the FIAS-cell in some
publications.

Installing the QTA burner mount
To install the QTA burner mount you must remove the burner head, attach the
burner mount to the burner head, and then reinstall the burner head.
Remove the burner head
1. Where applicable, extinguish the flame, allow the burner head to cool, shut
down the gases at source, and bleed the gas supply lines (the correct procedure
is described in the Users Guide for your AA spectrometer).
2. Remove the burner head as described in the Users Guide for your AA
spectrometer.
Attach the QTA burner mount
Note: A heat shield is provided with the QTA burner mount. You only requirethe heat shield if your spectrometer is a Model 3100, 3110, or 3300 (see page 8).
1. Swing the QTA bracket on the burner mount into the up position.
2. Slacken (but do not remove) the two adjusting screws in each securing clamp.
3. Slide the QTA burner mount onto the burner head and position the two
securing clamps over the ends of the burner head. The QTA bracket must be
at the front of the burner head.4. Tighten the adjusting screws, but leave them slack enough so that you can
move the burner mount.
Align the QTA burner mount
1. Swing the QTA bracket into the down position.
2. Visually sight along the burner slot and move the QTA burner mount with
respect to the burner head until the two Vs in the QTA bracket line up withthe burner slot.
3. Tighten the adjusting screws in the securing clamps.

Warning: High Temperatures Risk of Burns
The burner head can reach very high temperatures.
Do not touch the burner head until it has cooled to room temperature.

Reinstall the burner head
1. Reinstall the burner head as described in the Users Guide for your AA
spectrometer.
Note: The QTA burner mount can remain permanently installed on the burner
head.
If you wish to change over to normal flame analyses, tilt the QTA bracket to the
up position and park the QTA in the holder at the side of the MHS-10/15 reactor
assembly. Move the reactor assembly away from the immediate vicinity of the
atomizer compartment.

Installing the heat shield
If your spectrometer is a Model 3100, 3110, or 3300, you should attach the heat
shield to the burner mount after you have installed the burner mount and
reinstalled the burner head. Refer to Figure 4 while performing the procedure.

1. Put the QTA bracket in either the down or the up position.
2. Slide the heat shield onto the QTA bracket so that the slots on the sides of the
heat shield fit on the shoulder screws at each side of the QTA bracket.

QTAs for FIAS systems
If you are using the flame to heat the QTA for a FIAS system, use only the QTA
with removable PTFE window assemblies. This QTA has a uniform diameter
along its whole length when the window assemblies are removed. Always remove
the window assemblies before heating the QTA.
Do not use a QTA with flared ends and integral exhaust vents.

Extinguishing the flame
When you extinguish the flame after the system has been in operation for several
hours, the QTA is hot and continues to radiate energy until it has cooled down.
Depending on the model of spectrometer, this energy can be detected by the flame
sensor. In this situation it is not possible to continue with flame shut-down
operations.
After a minute or two the QTA has cooled sufficiently and the instrument detects
that the flame has been extinguished. This is not a hazardous situation you must
merely wait for a minute or two for the QTA to cool before you continue with the
shut-down procedure.
Spectrometers with automatic atomizer changeover
Caution: Risk of damage to the instrument
If your spectrometer has automatic changeover between the burner system and
the graphite furnace (e.g. AAnalyst 700 or 800), you can damage the instrument
if you change to the graphite furnace while the QTA burner mount is installed on
the burner.
Before changing atomizers, remove the burner head complete with QTAburner mount from the burner system.
