Boletín Mensual / Monthly Bulletin
Abril 2020 / April 2020
________________________________

April has kept most of us on lockdown, but this does not mean we have been inactive.
Working from our own homes, we have done plenty of planning, coordination and
evaluation.
Important decisions have been made in the last few days regarding future events: new
dates for the Pan American and Parapan American Championships, allocation of the
2022 Pan American Championships, and more slots for the compound bow with teams in
Santiago 2023.
We have held important on-line meetings with the organizing committees of the 2023 Pan
American Games, the 2021 Pan American Junior Games, and the 2022 South American
Games to ensure that the archery competition at these events is held in compliance with
the best international standards.
World Archery Americas is regarded as a serious, organized and respectable continental
organization. Based on this recognition, our request to increase the number of compound
archers and to include the compound men and compound women team events in Santiago
2023 has been considered and approved by Pan Am Sports. We know the numbers can
still be further increased, but this is a long process we will continue to work on for 2027.
We are pleased to hear that our archers along the continent keep themselves active with
adjusted training routines to continue their preparation for future events. We know that
this is the result of the athletes’ rigorous discipline but also the outcome of their national
federations’ planning and control. Congratulations to all archers, coaches, judges and
national federation officials who have not been stopped by the unfavorable international
situation.

Campeonato Panamericano y Clasificatorio Olímpico pasan al
2021 / Pan Am Championships and CQT moved to 2021
The World Archery Executive Board, in consultation with World Archery Americas and
the Mexican Federation, have decided to move the dates of the Pan American and
Parapan American Championships and Tokyo Continental qualifiers to the end of March
2021. This decision has been based on the present international situation and the
conditions under which our athletes have been and will be training in the last and next
few months. Monterrey, Mexico, will remain as the host city.
Chile sede de Panamericano de 2022 / Chile to host 2022 Pan
American Championships
The WAA Council has decided to allocate the 2022 Pan American Championships to
Santiago de Chile. The Chilean Federation submitted their bid for the approval of the
General Assembly originally planned to be held in Monterrey in March 2020.

Campo de Tiro – Evento Ranking Mundial, Santiago de Chile 2019
Pan Am Sports has requested the definition of the dates and venue of the first qualifier
for the 2023 Pan Am Games. It was therefore necessary to make a decision before the
Assembly can be finally held later this year.
The Pan American Championships will be held in October 2022, twelve months prior to
the Pan Am Games, and will be the first qualifier for the Games.
Aumento de plazas en Compuesto para Santiago 2023 /
Increase in Compound slots for Santiago 2023

In response to a request made by World Archery Americas to raise the number of
compound archers in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, Pan Am Sports has
accepted to increase the rosters to 16 men and 16 women. In Lima 2019 there were 10
archers in each gender.
The additional six archers will include the gold medal winner in each gender in the Cali
2021 Pan American Junior Games.
The new figures will allow team competition in both genders, but the compound teams
will be formed by two archers.
More information on the qualification system and the events to be contested in Santiago
2023 will be released shortly.
Nuevas fechas para evento CIMA / New dates for the MICA
6
Asociaciones Miembros de World Archery Americas.
Barebow archers at an indoor event
Due to the current international health situation, World Archery Americas has extended
its 2020 Multi-Sites Indoor Championships (MICA) until the end of the year.
Results from events that took place before March 15 and those held after July 1,
according to World Archery’s current hiatus, until December 31 will be considered.
If for any reason World Archery decides to further delay the reinstatement of the
competition calendar, the MICA dates will adjust accordingly.
The 60-arrow 18-metre indoor competition usually runs from January 1 to June 30.
Archers shoot the round at registered indoor tournaments held in any of the 33 World
Archery Americas Member Associations.
The 2020 edition is the first to include barebow competitions since World Archery
approved the inclusion of this type of bow in target competitions in 2019.

Además, a falta

digitales.

Archers from the Americas reinvent home training during
lockdown.
Quarantine measures due to COVID-19 were put in place by most countries over a month
ago. This forced federations, archers, coaches and judges to think of new ways of training
that could help them stay active and in competition shape while stuck at home.
Through social media, we have seen online physical training, mental chats, conferences,
inventive home ranges at short distances and more. This is how some archers in the
Americas are coping with their time in quarantine.
Brazil
Paralympian Jane Karla Gogel moved to Portugal two years ago. Spending lockdown at
home with her husband, the para archer has been training at five meters, shooting World
Archery’s online league and creating her own challenges to remain positive.
Jane already secured Brazil a spot for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which are now
scheduled for 2021.
Olympian Bernardo Oliveira started his lockdown by sharing a three-exercise routine that
can be done at home by any archer. Oliveira has also invited athletes from all sports to
donate blood, something that has become more critical during this time.
Many athletes have accepted his invitation and, in turn, asked others to participate. It has
already helped save lives in Brazil.
17
Canada
Pan American Champion Crispin Duenas has kept active by shooting World Archery’s
Beat the Outbreak Online Archery League, eating healthy and running when he is not
shooting.
To maintain his strength, Duenas also does physical training sessions, helping himself
with TRX and using his own body weight to replace the normal weight found at the gym.
Colombia
On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, recurve athletes in Colombia meet their national
coaches on Zoom, an online video call platform.
According to Olympian Ana Maria Rendon, it has been a motivational space. It has helped
the group work on technical issues and, together in absence of competition, they’ve
focused on specific bow work.
Physiotherapeutic, physiological and even nutritional sessions have also been done.
Rendon shoots and does physical training from Monday to Saturday, as she used to, and
rests on Sunday. She says that the most difficult aspect of quarantine has been that she
can only shoot three meters at home, although she has used mental strategies to take the
best from this situation.
18
Sara Lopez, who is lucky enough to have a big backyard, has been sharing videos of her
training from home with brother Isaac.
Sara will be one of the eight athletes to take part in the first remote online international
archery tournament that is being organized by World Archery in the upcoming weeks.
Mexico
Led by head coach Santiago Avitia, Mexico has been organizing workshops on Zoom.
Topics like the strength, aiming, expansion, alignment and much more have been covered.
Olympian Alejandra Valencia, who won Mexico a spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic
Games last summer in the Netherlands, shared her journey on a video for Claro Sports.
The recurve woman has been training at home with the help of her coach Miguel Angel
Flores.
“I have lots of trust in him because I know he is prepared; he knows what he is doing. He
was also an archer, so he knows about the path that we have to follow,” said Alejandra.

USA
Judges in the States have been moving education tools online. Certification will be done
through e-learning modules with a test that is taken on the internet.
Along with webinars for the 100-or-so active judges at a national level, the community
remains in touch during this event drought.
19
“We have unofficial Facebook groups that have many discussions providing best
practice,” says International Judge with Olympic Games experience Bob Pian, “I post
there way too often.”
We are all looking forward to competition resuming. In the meantime, stay safe and stay
active – and tune in to World Archery’s Lockdown Knockout, the first remote
international archery event, to see archers from the Americas compete.
It starts on 9 May and will be streaming across digital platforms.
