capable of generating benefits without depletion of the natural resources. One of these alterna-tives is ecotourism which works once the population discovers its potential for generating eco-
nomic resources.
Tourism is a clean industry generating income starting from minimal investments and, after mining,
is the sector producing greatest income to Peru. The scope of this publication extends far beyond
the Alto Mayo, it is part of the Peruvian north-Amazon tourist circuit, that comprises from
Lambayeque to Iquitos, crossing through Chachapoyas, Rioja, Moyobamba, Tarapoto and Yuri-
maguas. This should be a joint endeavour by part of the public sector, civil society and
International Co-operation to offer diverse, innovative packages and thus join efforts toward
sustainable development.

Peru is one of the worlds megadiverse countries,
supporting large numbers of species and a wide
range of different habitats. This diversity makes
it a country of contrasts for the visitor, who can
experience arid coastal deserts, the worlds most
diverse tropical rainforests, cold marine waters
teeming with life, high mountain lakes and grass-
lands, and dense cloud forests, to name some of
the main habitats. This is combined with an equally
diverse cultural heritage with a multitude of
acheological sites and a varied modern-day
cuisine and customs. Most visitors to Peru focus
on the south of the country, based around Machu
Pichu and Cusco, and therefore the north is largely
overlooked. It, however, offers some of the most
exciting destinations for the visitor interested in
both wildlife and archeology.
Archeological remains abound in northern Peru
and originate from a variety of ancient
civilisations. Amongst the most notable are the
collections of gold and silver jewelery taken from
the tombs of Sipan in Lambayeque and the spec-
tacular fortress of Kuelap in Amazonas, both of
which are world class attractions. There are
myriad of other archeological sites from adobe

The Northern Tourist Corridor of Peru extends
from the coast to the Amazon basin and is easilytravelled in three weeks allowing a visitor to
experience a wide variety of places and habitats.
This corridor is designed around archaeologi-
cal sites but is also fantastic for the visiting birder,
taking in the huge variety of habitats and birds
found in the region, including almost all the north
Peruvian endemics and specialities.
Highlights for the visiting birder include species
such as the endangered Grey-bellied Comet
near Cajamarca, critically threatened White-winged Guan in Lambayeque and endangered
Marvellous Spatultail in Amazonas; all of
which can only be found in northern Peru.
The central sector of this tourist corridor
comprises the Alto Mayo region. Alto Mayo is
the name given to the area that forms the upper
parts of the Mayo river drainage. In this book
we take this to mean the headwaters stretch-
ing down into the lowlands around the town
of Moyobamba.
We have also decided to include the similar
and nearby Cordillera de Coln, which shares
many of the bird species and likewise has its
own specialities.
gobiernos locales.

In common with many areas of the world the
forests and wild areas of nothern Peru are beingdegraded and destroyed and many species that
inhabit them are now threatened.
Fortunately some national protected areas
have now been established, such as the Alto
Mayo Protection Forest (182,000 ha) and the
Cordillera de Colan Reserved Zone (64,114
ha). Also the local government of Moyobamba
and some far-sighted local communities are
taking measures to try to conserve their eco-
logical heritage and are establishing reserves
and protected areas to complement those
established by the nat ional government.
Visitors to the region can support these initia-
tives and provide further incentives for local
people and government to preserve the unique
and magnificent landscapes and biological
diversity of this region.
In the Alto Mayo and Cordillera de Colan
deforestation has come mainly from agricul-
tural expansion and timber extraction since
the road was built in the 1970s. In the low-
lands of the Mayo basin most forest has now
been removed and a productive agricultural
area has become established. This area de-
pends on the water flowing from the forested
mountains of the Alto Mayo and it is these that
are now being deforested, providing only very
marginal agricultural land of low quality, but
destroying the unique forest and putting in
jeopardy the water for the highly productive
agricultural areas of the Mayo basin.
The true value of these forests for their wildlife and
environmental services has not yet been realised
and the expansion of ecotourism benefiting the
people who live in and around these forests will
be a positive step towards the protection of these
magnificent and unique forests for future genera-
tions to enjoy. Your visit will help support the
conservation of these forests.
generaciones futuras podrn disfrutar. Con
su visita contribuir con la conservacin de
estos magnficos bosques.

The Alto Mayo is an incredibly diverse area
that contains a large number of different habi-tats and consequently an incredible diversity
of birds. The whole area and complete range
of habitats are traversed by a major road al-
lowing access to all habitats of the region and
to the full range of bird species. This makes
the region one of the best birding destinations
in Peru and the world.
The higher reaches of the Alto Mayo are eas-
ily accessed around the famous Abra Patricia

shrouded in cloud and is laden with epiphytic
plants, in many areas dense stands of bamboo
dominate the understorey.

The Cock-of-the-Rock Rupicola
peruvianais one of the most spectacu-lar and well known birds of Peru. It
inhabits the lower montane forests be-
low 2,000 m altitude. This large orange
frugivore can often be seen feeding in
fruiting trees but is most impressive
when seen at a lek. Here males gather
at traditional lek sites in the early
morning to display. They squeal loudly
and dance, bending their heads for-
wards and raising their wings.
The duller females visit the leks to select
a mate who after mating plays no fur-
ther part in the nesting or feeding of

Hummingbirds are the most accomplished
precision flyers of the birds, able to hover and
fly backwards. They are unique in generating
lift on both the upstroke and downstroke of the
wings, which typically beat 10-80 times a
second but can beat up to 200 times a second
in display flights. They can also fly extremely
rapidly with speeds of up to 150 km per hour
being recorded. Such an active life means they
have high metabolic demands and their hearts
beat 500-600 times per minute at rest and over
1,000 times a minute when fighting. Their
lifestyle means that they must feed regularly
while active and they tend to be active through-
out the day. They feed mainly on nectar from
flowers but also take small arthropods to
supplement their sugar diet. Hummingbirds
bills show a great variety of shapes and sizes,
reflecting the great diversity of plant speciesthat they feed on.
Perhaps the most spectacular hummingbird in
the region is the Marvellous Spatuletail, which
is found only in the Cordillera de Colan and
dealt with in a special section. The montane
forests of the Alto Mayo hold the biggest con-
centration of species and are also home to
some of the more spectacular species such as
cial. Los bosques montanos del Alto Mayo
contienen la mayor concentracin de
especies, algunas realmente espectaculares
como el Colibr Cola Esptula Zamarrito y elSilfo de Cola Larga, as como el rarsimo An-

Los bosques bajos cercanos a Moyobamba
y a Tingana tienen menos especies, pero
acogen a gran cantidad de Ermitaos, que
son colibres menos vistosos que usan sus
picos curvos para alimentarse de las flores
de Heliconia.

The Cordillera de Coln forms the western boundary of the Alto Mayo separating the humid forestsfrom the arid Maran valley. These forests which extend from 750-3,600 m altitude contains
many species in common with the Alto Mayo but also supports some bird species not found in the
Alto Mayo. The most important of these is the Marvellous Spatuletail hummingbird, which is
only found here. The forests at the northern end of the Cordillera de Coln have suffered exten-
sive deforestation in recent decades and now only scattered woodlots remain in areas near roads
with extensive forest cover only now being found in hard to access areas. The remaining woodlots
still harbor a surprisingly diverse avifauna and can be very rewarding for the visiting birdwatcher.
Recently the Peruvian government has created a Reserved Zone in the Cordillera de Colan, which
extends over 64,114 hectares and aims protect the important habitat and endemic species found there.

The Marvellous Spatuletail is arguably the worlds most
spectacular and unusual hummingbird. The species has only
four tail feathers, unique amongst hummingbirds, of which
two are massively elongated with bare shafts and large
purple rackets at the end and the central pair are long and
narrow. The rackets move constantly even when perched and
can distract and confuse even experienced observers. Some
birdwatchers have stated that it seems like the bird is being
mobbed by two butterflies!
The Marvellous Spatultail is a unique and endangered hum-

facilidades para su observacin. Habita
en los bosques montanos, en las zonas
de transicin y en reas deforestadas
cercanas. Recientes observaciones
sugieren que slo utiliza las zonas
deforestadas cercanas a los remanentes
de bosque, pero ciertamente requieren
bosques saludables.
adyacentes. Para el desarrollo de una
estrategia de conservacin de esta especie,
debe involucrarse e informarse adecua-
damente a los pobladores locales. La
especie tiene mucho potencial como
atraccin ecoturstica, pero slo si se
garantiza la conservacin de su hbitat

the town of Pomacochas. It is near Pomacochas where the species is most frequently reported and
most easily seen. It inhabits montane forest, forest edges and open areas nearby; although the species
is perhaps most often seen in open areas, recent observations seem to suggest that it only uses open
areas close to remaining forest patches and it seems likely that it is indeed reliant on forest. It is
mainly found from 2,100 to 2,800 m altitude but has been recorded as low as 1,700 m and as high as
3,700 m. The breeding season is from October to May when the males gather at leks (communal

The vicinty of Pomacochas, dominated by the lake of
the same name, is one of the best places for theobservation of this hummingbird.
The species remains little known. Its population is estimated to be less than 1,000 individuals and
it is considered to probably be declining in numbers. The main threat to its continued survival isthe on-going deforestation of the region. Additionally, the males are hunted in some areas in the
mistaken belief that the heart has aphrodisiac properties; and hunting with slingshots has been
suggested to explain a skewed sex ratio, with males being rarer than females.
In order to ensure the long-term survival of this amaz-
ing bird there is a need for more accurate information
and a locally led conservation strategy. Research is
needed into the ecology of the species as well as surveys
of the Cordillera de Colan and adjacent areas.
A critical step is the development of a conservationstrategy involving local people to secure the long-term
survival of this unique hummingbird. The species has
a great potential as an ecotourism attraction but only
if it can be safeguarded in easily accessible areas
before all remaining habitat is destroyed there.

Over a hundred years ago, the thick and clouded forests of the Alto Mayo received small family
groups of the warrior nation of the Awajun, they arrived from the middle basin of the Maraon
river and its tributaries. The demographic strain on the territories of the Maraon and the need
for finding better fishing and hunting grounds appears to be what motivated their migration.
Self-denominated aents(the true people), the Awajun belong to the Jibaro ethnic group and areconsidered to be one of the peoples of greatest cultural wealth throughout Amazonia.
According to their perception of creation, Etsa(the sun) created the world. In the beginning all
living beings were people, then Etsaconverted some of them into animals. Thus, for instance,
birds like the toucan, the trumpeter, the curassow and the cock of the rocks, are warriors trans-
formed by the sun.
The relationship of the Awajun with the forest and the creatures it shelters is close to magical,
abundant in myths and legends in which birds play a leading role. The story goes that in ancient
times fire was not known to them, it being the exclusive property of Iwa(in the native tongue
meaning he who eats us) until Jempe, the hummingbird, with the tip of its tail, stole the fire and
