SoilSoil provides plants with the
support and nutrients they need to grow.
We want to determine the best soil for growing plants in a
garden.
Observation of the soil in an ecosystem
1. We collected a sample of loam (garden) soil, clay (construction) soil and sandy soil. We labelled the pots.
2. We observed the three samples and compared the physical differences. We felt each sample with our hands and recorded the results.

Results: Properties
We investigated the types of soils Loam
(garden soil)
Loam soil is dark brown and contains a lot of organic matter called humus. It has
big and small particles that form air spaces. It can also retain water so it is
moisted.
Clay (used in construction)
Clay soil is grey and has almost no organic matter. It has very small particles that
forms very small air gaps. When it rains, the water forms puddles and the clay feels sticky since the clay soil is impermeable.
Sandy soil
Sandy soil is light brown and has little organic matter. It has big particles that forms big air gaps. Water drains easily through the sand and it is not retained. This soil becomes dry as water evaporates on its surface.
SOIL PROFILES• We wanted to see the composition of each soil. For this:
3. We got three flasks with water and we put the soils into them.
4. We stirred and allowed the samples to settle for 30 min. We observed the results.
Soil Layers (Horizons)
5. Then we mixed the three soils to compare them.
6. Finally, we germinated radish seeds for a week and planted them in the three different soils.
We germinated radish seeds for 7 days
The best soil to grow plants is the loam because it has a lot of air, moisture and organic matter that will be decomposed for the plants to use.
It is very important to choose the right soil for crops and to take care of it to produce enough food for the people.
