Profile of the Faculty of Business,
Economy and Social Sciences
The faculty was founded in 1975 and is one of three faculties at the university.
Measured by the number of its students, this faculty is the biggest one of all three. With
around 4.500 students, this faculty accounts for 50 percent of all students at Universität
Hohenheim. More than 40 lecturers are involved in teaching and research.
The faculty incorporates eight institutes, the Innovation and Services Research Center
(FZID) as well as nine further Research Centers and offers five Bachelor degree
programmes and seven Master degree programmes.
It combines top level research and modern teaching according to international standards.
Students and researchers of the faculty get regularly awarded for their academic
achievements. Not least because of networking and cooperation in research and
education, Hohenheim's graduates are young professionals who are very much in
demand. The proven Hohenheim model, the integration of business administration,
economics, law and social sciences, has been further enhanced. In the course of the
switch to the new Bachelor´s programmes, the faculty has tightened the entire teaching
programme and enhanced it in terms of qualification for employment.
The Master´s programmes provide more intensive scientific and methodologically
demanding teaching content and prepare students for studying towards a doctorate.
The faculty is shaped by its innovative and international outlook as well as its service
orientation. A particular focus of research is on the field of innovative and service
economics.
The foundation for this was laid by the Center for Research on Innovation and Services
(FZID), an interdisciplinary scientific center that has gained a reputation for
quantitatively orientated-, as well as experimental research.
The faculty demonstrated its innovative and international approach with the foundation
of the Hohenheim Management School. The first Executive MBA course started in
early 2009 and is run in collaboration with the HEC Paris, one of the leading Business
Schools worldwide.
Welcome to the University sports page
About us
The University of Hohenheim offers around 40 different sports and thus provides
every student with the opportunity to do sports, learn new forms of movement and
exercise, take up new sports and continue doing sports they already know during their
university life. This is not only about fitness, health and well-being, but also an
opportunity to make social contacts outside of the boundaries of one's course and
faculty.
The various sports are organised by trained sports teachers and qualified trainers. It is
not necessary to register for the majority of sports, so you can simply turn up and have a
go! You need to register in advance, however, for all courses where a fee is charged and
which are marked with an asterisk (*) at the sports office.
Hohenheim is a member of the General German University Sports Association (adh)
and thus competes at university level in regional, national and international university
championships and competitions, from the German University Cup to the Universiade.
This competitive programme is further complemented by a large number of - now
traditional - internal University tournaments and championships.
Culture and events
Social functions and parties
Hohenheim kicks off the Stuttgart ball season with its Ball Beneath the Harvest Crown
in the autumn following the harvest festival. The Palace, decorated in autumnal colours
from the first floor right down to the basement, radiates in its glittering splendour.
Guests dance to live music and disco rhythms, take part in the raffle and listen to the
Hohenheim musical ensembles, which all provide sophisticated cultural entertainment.
The AStA General Students Committee and student representative bodies organise a
programme of benefit concerts, rock, pop, rap and jazz, cabaret and lectures throughout
the year in the Thomas-Müntzer-Scheuer. Student parties and a café are an integral part
of campus culture in Hohenheim. The concept “Our TMS” envisions the opening of a
student-run bar and café in the near future.
The faculties celebrate with their graduates at graduation celebrations, either on a small,
intimate scale or on a grander scale with fireworks.
Cultural involvement and extramural activities
In addition to technical skills, you will often find requirements for positions specifying
"key skills", such as creativity, team work, versatility, motivation and open-mindedness.
Within the University's sports, musical and theatre programmes, you will have the
opportunity to develop these skills whilst having fun and expressing yourself.
The campus
The University of Hohenheim campus lies in the south of Stuttgart and provides a
wonderful facility based around the late-Baroque Palace, which Duke Carl Eugene had
built towards the end of the 18th century, and which has grown organically and now has
the most modern teaching and research facilities. The extensive grounds of the
Hohenheim Gardens, as well as its research and training facilities, make the grounds
of the University one of the most attractive campus universities in the whole of
Germany.
The campus is also ideal for studying. As a campus university in the truest sense of the
word, every lecture room can be reached within a couple of minutes on foot. The
institutes and institutions, as well as the canteen, computer suite and even the sports
facilities, are all close at hand, as can be seen from the map of the campus.
Hohenheim also boasts of on-campus museums dedicated to agriculture, zoology and
more.
Downtown Stuttgart can be reached in 30 minutes or so with public transport (bus and
tram) or car and Hohenheim is also easy to reach from outside Stuttgart.
Food and drink
There are many places where you can eat and drink in Hohenheim, irrespective of
whether you want something quick or wish to eat a complete three-course meal at
leisure and in peace. Whatever it is, Hohenheim has it.
Dinning Hall/Canteen
If your stomach is rumbling around lunchtime, then the staff of the canteen have already
prepared something tasty for you to try. You have the choice of:
two set meals, one of which is generally meat-free.
a single dish.
an extensive salad bar.
From Tues. to Thurs. there's a wok dish available at the "promotions counter /Aktions-
Theke".
The canteen also provides a food delivery service for events taking place on campus.
Cafeteria
It's one of the best places to meet up with friends, relax and celebrate passing your
exams with a glass of champagne. Whether you choose to sit inside or outside at the
tables and on the grassy areas, the cafeteria is the place for a cup of tea or coffee, with a
cake or a hearty snack, before, during and even after lectures.
The cafeteria runs special promotions, like BBQs, several times a year. Their menus
are continually being revised and extended to meet the demands and requests of
students and their guests. Feedback, comments and criticism are all welcome.
The Cafete in the "TMS" is the student alternative to the cafeteria for everyone that
wants a cheaper meal and doesn't always want to fight for a seat. It serves Fairtrade tea,
coffee and cocoa and sometimes also pretzels and other small snacks. From time to time
exhibitions on a variety of themes are also held in the Cafete.
On sunny days Linden Square (Platz unter den Linden) in front of the TMS is one of
the prettiest places on the campus to meet friends and relax.
The Cafete is open at regular hours Wednesday and Thursday and from 11:00 until
15:00. Check the noticeboard in front of the TMS for opening times! It is run by the AK
Cafete of the AStA, that is to say it is run by volunteers who think that is it a good idea
and want to support it.
There are vending machines on the ground floor of the Bio Building for a quick snack
between lectures. These provide hot and cold drinks, sweets, as well as pretzels and
cakes and biscuits. There are also more vending machines in the building in which the
canteen and cafeteria are located. These provide "essential" things for those in a
hurry, like coffee, soft drinks and cigarettes.
The vending machines also provide special foods, like specialist coffees and ice cream.
There is also a vending machine selling cold drinks for after training in the foyer of the
sports hall.
The vending machine are accessible when the cafeteria and the Biology building are
open. The vending machine in the sports hall is always accessible.
Student groups
Over and above their studies, the students can become involved in different student
groups.
These groups are concerned with the most diverse issues. Some of the groups seek
to build up contacts with business and commerce and hold presentations on economic
issues. Others are more concerned with political involvement in the form of simulation
games, discussions and party-political work. Other student groups are interested in
dealing with the concerns and issues of foreign students. Many of these groups have
social involvement high on their agenda. Others are more interested in discussing
religious or world issues.
It is also possible to form new student groups. The following should be noted if you
wish to do so: the interests of the group must conform to the aims and objectives of the
University of Hohenheim and the democratic principles of the Federal Republic of
Germany. The minimum size of a group is seven members and at least five of these, or
80%, have to be registered at the University of Hohenheim. A certain longevity has to
be ensured in that the group has to have existed for at least two semesters.
The group will be listed as a student group in the University Guide and on the
homepage. The group can also apply to use the lecture rooms and in exceptional cases,
rooms in the Palace and in the Euroforum, free of charge.
