PurposesandObjectivesThepurposesandobjectivesofSeacoastCenterforEducationanditsprogramsare:1. TooffereducationtoadultsinthetheoryandmethodologyoftheMontessoriMethodforthestatedagerange.2. 10EthicsTheCodeofEthicsoftheAmericanMontessoriSocietyguidesprofessionalrelationsbetweenSeacoastCenterforEducation,adultlearners,andfellowprofessionals.CodeofEthicsoftheAmericanMontessoriSocietyPrincipleI–CommitmenttotheStudentInfulfillmentoftheobligationtothechildren,theeducator:1. Shallencourageindependentactioninthepursuitoflearning2. Shallprotecttheopportunitytoprovideforparticipationineducationalprogramswithoutregardtorace,sex,color,creedornationalorigin3. Shallprotectthehealthandsafetyofstudents4. Shallhonorprofessionalcommitments,maintainobligationsandcontractswhileneversolicitingnorinvolvingstudentsortheirparentsinschemesforcommercialgain5. Shallkeepinconfidenceinformationthathasbeensecuredinthecourseofprofessionalservice,unlessdisclosureservesprofessionalpurposesorisrequiredbylawPrincipleII–CommitmenttothePublicTheMontessorieducatorsharesintheresponsibilityforthedevelopmentofpolicyrelatingtotheextensionofeducationalopportunityforallandforinterpretingeducationalprogramsandpoliciestothepublic.Infulfillingthesegoals,theeducator:1. 12AdmissionSeacoastCenteracceptsapplicationsthroughouttheyearforentranceintooursummerprograms.Inordertomaintainthequalityoflifeinoursmallsettingwedolimitclasssizesandencourageearlyenrollment.CandidatesforAMSElementarycertificationmustholdatleastaUSBachelor'sdegreeoritsequivalent.CandidatesholdingdegreesissuedoutsidetheUnitedStatesareeligibleforAMSInternationalcredentialsuponsatisfactoryevaluationoftranscriptsordiplomas.Shouldthisrequireexternalevaluationitisatthestudent'sownexpense.CandidatesforElementaryI(6-9)certificationmustpossessEarlyChildhood(21/2-6)certificationfromaninstitutionrecognizedbytheAmericanMontessoriSocietyorundertakea40houroverviewforthatlevelwhichincludesbasictheory,methodology,andcurricula.DocumentationisrequiredbeforerecommendationforElementaryIorI-IIcertificationismade.CandidateswhoenrollasElementaryI-IIstudentswhoarecurrentlyworkinginupperelementaryclassroomsmaybeabletoundertakeadvancedcontentareaattherequestofsponsoringschools.Thisoptionrequiresawrittenstatementfromtheheadoftheschoolregardingthecandidate’sabilitytobenefitfromsuchacourseofstudy.NocertificationrecommendationisissueduntiltheentireElementaryI-IIprogramiscompleted.ApplicationProcessProgramapplicationsareavailableonlineatwww.seacoastcenter.comorfromourofficeviamailorfax.Theapplicationlistsaccompanyingmaterialsweconsiderinadmissions.Noapplicationcanbeprocessedbeforereceiptoftheapplicationfee.TheApplicationFormatwww.seacoastcenter.comprovidesimportantinformationregardingAdmissionsrequirements.Non-CertificationParticipantsInthecaseofindividualswhodonotsatisfycriteriaforadmissionforcertificationbutwhowishtoparticipatefullyintheprogram,theCourseDirectorwilldeterminethecandidate’sabilitytobenefitfromparticipationandmayofferadmissionwithoutcertificationintentathisdiscretion.Theapplicationprocessisthesameasforacertificationcandidateandenrollmentonthisbasisdoesnotnecessarilyreducetuitionorfees.Indeterminingtheabilitytobenefit,particularattentionwillbegiventothepersonalstatementandlettersofrecommendationsuppliedwiththeapplication.Additionally,theCourseDirectorgenerallywillrequestastatementofneedfromaMontessorischooldirectorattestingtotheindividual’ssuitabilityforemploymentatthechosenlevel.

SeacoastCenterMontessoriTeacherEducationProgram� GuideforAdultLearners 13BackgroundChecksStateandlocaljurisdictionsvarywithrespecttorequirementsforcriminalbackgroundchecksforteachersandchild-careserviceproviders.SeacoastCenterdoesnotcollectormaintainsuchinformation.Courseparticipantsenteringapracticumarerequiredtocomplywithpoliciesofthepracticumsiteinthismatter.TransferCredit

Courseworksimilartothatoftheelementarycertificationprogramwhichhasbeencompletedmaybeacceptedinpartialfulfillmentofcourserequirementsforamaximumofone-thirdoftheacademicclockhoursforthecourseaccordingtocriteriaestablishedbyAMS.AMSdoesnotaccepttransferofcreditfromunaccreditedMontessoriinstitutions.ApplicantswhofeeltheycandemonstratecompliancewiththedefinitionsandstandardsestablishedbyAMSmaypetitioninwritingtotheCourseDirectorforadvancedstatus.TheCourseDirectormayrequestspecificinformationfromtheapplicant,includingsubmissionofmaterialsandalbumsandwrittenstatementsconcerningpreviousexperience.AComprehensiveExaminationFeemayapplyinthiseventatthediscretionoftheCourseDirector.Acceptanceofpreviousworktowardadvancedstatuswillnotnecessarilyreducetheapplicant'sfinancialobligationforfulltuitionandfeesfortheprogram.AttendanceNote:Alladultlearnersareexpectedtoindicatepresenceuponarrivalanddepartureorverifypresenceonsitebyreliableelectronicmethods.AcademicPhase(academicsessionsandseminars):Given the compacted time schedule for this program, attendance at all sessions offered isrequiredunless excusedby theCourseDirector. TheCourseDirectorwill have the right toexcuseabsencesprovided:1. Theadultlearnerpresentsareasonableplaninwritingforcompensatoryworkrelateddirectlytosubjectmattermissed.2. Thetotalnumberofcontacthoursmisseddoesnotexceed10%oftheprogramstotalhoursor20%ofanysinglecurriculumarea.3. Theadultlearneracknowledgesresponsibilityforallworkmissedduringsuchperiods.Withpriorarrangementandawrittenrequest,contenthoursmissedmaybemadeupduringscheduledlabtimesatanapprovedsiteunderthedirectionofaqualifiedfacultymember.ThisserviceisprovidedsolelyatthediscretionoftheCenter.

14TardinessTardinessamountingtomorethan40%ofanysingleclasssessionwillbeconsideredasabsencefortheentiresessionwithsubsequentlossofcreditforallclassclockhoursassignedtothatsession.

SupervisedPracticeLabsSupervisedpracticelabsessionscontributetothetotalnumberofhoursandarenotoptionalwhentheytakeplaceduringstatedcoursehours.Labperiodsconductedwithinspecificcontentareatimesduringthedayareusedforpracticeinthatcontentareaunlessotherwisedirectedbythefacultymemberprovidingtheclass.Wheneveninglabhoursareofferedtheywillbesupervisedbyatleastonequalifiedfacultymember.Labtimesmaytendtobemorerelaxedandoffervaluabletimeforintegrationofmaterials,sharingwithfellowstudentsandfaculty,andmaterial-making.Weofferandaskforprofessionaldecorumandrespectforourschoolenvironmentatalltimesonsite.

AttendanceDuringPracticumPhaseAMSrequirementsforthepracticumphaseinclude1080hours,typicallyafulldaynine-monthpositioninanage-appropriateclassroom.ExceptionstothismodelmayberequestedinwritingtotheCourseDirector.CumulativeattendanceatthepracticumsitemustbeconsistentwithAMSpracticumrequirements.Asteachingprofessionals,adultlearnersareexpectedtoconformtopersonnelpoliciesoftheirpracticumsiteswithrespecttoabsence,compensation,andcontinuingresponsibilityforperformanceofduties.Achronicorprotractedrecordofabsenceortardinessmaybegroundsfordisqualificationofthepracticumexperience.AdultLearnerAssessmentTheSeacoastMontessoriElementaryIandElementaryI-IIprogramassessesandevaluatesadultlearnerprogressbyseveralmeansduringtheprogramcycle:1. Areviewandcritiqueofselectedalbumnotationsandillustrations.2. Supervisedpracticelabsessions.AdultLearnersareexpectedtomaintainalogoftheir

workduringlabsessionsaswellaspresentmaterialstopeersandfaculty.3. Periodicpracticalexamsandpeerassessments.4. Anindividualorgroupprojectpresentedattheendoftheacademicsession.5. Writtenexamorsummationattheendoftheacademicphase.

SeacoastCenterMontessoriTeacherEducationProgram� GuideforAdultLearners 15CourseAssessmentOurcourseeffectivenessisevaluatedthroughresponsesfromfaculty,adultlearners,fieldsupervisors,schooladministrators,andsupervisingteachers(forsupervisedinternships)byseveralmeans:

1. Continuinginformalconversationbetweenfaculty,administration,andadultlearners

duringacademicsessionsonsite.2. Feedbackfromadultlearnersandadministrationtofieldsupervisorsduringthe

practicumphase.3. Requiredmonthlycheck-insonlinefromadultlearnersbetweencoursesessions.4. Surveysofadministratorsandgraduates.

GradingPolicySeacoastCenterdoesnotissueunitsofcreditorlettergrades.Allcourseworkisevaluatedonapass/notpassedbasis,withworknotpassedsubjecttore-submission.GradingfortheAcademicPhase1. Acceptable2.
