LAND OF COLOURS
The Empordà genius Salvador Dalí's imaginative palette is full of rich and varied
colours. They reflect the diversity and wealth of Girona's territory and people, history,
heritage and festivals. The Costa Brava is defined by the dark greens of pines
caressing the deep blue waves beneath the warm sun, and the Pirineu de Girona by
softer shades of green that combine with the golden sun and never-ending blue skies.
All accompanied by the ochres and browns of the cultural heritage from the Iberian,
Greek and Roman periods, whose imprint can still be found all around the land.
You will find a wide range of activities, from trekking and cycle-touring to diving and
kayaking, not to mention the green golf courses and the mantles of white snow that
cover the ski resorts. And if at any time you would like to connect with your inner
being, then take some time to visit the health and beauty centres with their top-rated
facilities and highly trained professionals.
Our cuisine – the pride of the land – combines great creativity with a wealth of local
products to produce our “sea and mountain” dishes and many others that will delight your
palate. In our region you can find dishes ranging from the classics through to the most
innovative, for here you will be able to explore the most authentic and passionate flavours
of the Mediterranean and the traditional dishes of the Pyrenees.
Visit the Costa Brava and the Pirineu de Girona and treat yourself to the surprise of
real sensations.
If when you think of the Costa Brava and the Pirineu de Girona all that comes to mind
is the sea and the mountains, then you need to come back!

Like a canvas where nature has intended to combine with exquisite delicacy the intense green of the pine groves, the massive steadfastness of the rocks, the softness of the golden sands and the deep, dazzling blue of the sea - that is the Costa Brava.
From Blanes to Portbou, the list of things to do includes the Cap de Creus Natural Park, with the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the village of Cadaqués, the marshes of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park and the Medes Islands Marine Reserve, and unique settings such as Roses bay, the ruins of Empúries, the coves of Begur and Palafrugell, Sant Sebastià lighthouse, Cap Roig gardens, the Old Town of Tossa de Mar and the Santa Clotilde, Pinya de Rosa and Marimurtra botanical gardens, between Lloret and Blanes. Do not forget to visit the shopping and leisure centres at Roses, L’Escala, L’Estartit, Palamós, Platja d’Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Lloret de Mar and Blanes.
Our route will lead us to discover places such as Peralada – with its castle and casino –, Figueres, with its museum devoted to the universal artist Salvador Dalí, medieval villages such as Pals, Peratallada and Púbol, the pottery shops at La Bisbal, the scenery of the Pla de l’Estany county with its capital Banyoles, and the city of Girona, with its cathedral and internationally famous Jewish Quarter. And on top of all this, one of the features we can display with greatest pride is the quality of our beaches and coastal waters, the result of considerable work put into quality monitoring and water treatment which has over and over again been accoladed for its quality by the European Environmental Education Foundation, as seen from the many blue flags which flutter in the breeze along our coastline.
In addition, the beaches of Lloret de Mar and Fenals have obtained the “Q” certificate of tourism quality awarded by the ICTE, and the beaches of Santa Margarida, Salatar, El Rastell, La Nova, La Punta, Canyelles-Bonifaci and L'Almadrava (in Roses) and those of Sant Antoni, Cala Cristus-Ses Torretes, Torre Valentina and Es Monestri (in Calonge) have won the EMAS environmental quality certificate.

The Mediterranean is just one aspect of the breathtakingly sensual Costa
Brava-Pirineu de Girona tandem. The other aspect is the Girona Pyrenees, the
authentic cradle of the Catalan nation where man has struggled for centuries against
a background of rugged nature. The striking features and implacable presence of
these snow-covered peaks of over two thousand metres sculpt the entire landscape
with their imposing granite heights and peaceful valleys and plains. Marking out this
rhythm rich in counterpoint and majestic crescendos, we travel over the plains until we come
up against the startling arrogance of Castellfollit de la Roca, perched on the edge of a basaltic
cliff, the elegance of Besalú, the naturalness of Santa Pau, the spectacular Garrotxa Volcanic
Area Natural Park, the dream-like panorama of Oix and Beget... until we arrive at the foot of
the Pyrenees.
Along this route, on this exciting journey, we will relive a world past, yearned for and
much-loved, that prayed to the heavens while clinging to the earth, and with daily toil
cultivated eternal life in a delicate balance of fear and hope that took material form
in a unique historical legacy of hermitages, convents and churches: our Romanesque
architectural heritage.
As we ascend the mountains, ski slopes and lifts gradually replace the shepherds and their
huts, giving way to a new setting of leisure activities and hospitality which have given
fresh life to the harsh economy of a region dominated by its natural features. Visitors will
find at Vallter in the Camprodon valley, at Núria in the Ribes valley (reached by rack railway),
and at La Molina and Masella (the Pyrenees largest skiing area), modern winter skiing
facilities which in warmer weather become sports and mountaineering centres, and
will be given a warm, friendly welcome.
PIRINEU DE GIRONAA LAND IN WHICH EVERY DAY IS A FESTIVAL
For what really makes a festival is this welcoming and open outlook with which we welcome you each day. Start wherever you like. In every town and city you will find celebrations at Christmas, main summer festivals and winter carnivals. All over you will find the spirit of Nativity tableaux, music festivals, habanera singing, improvised sardanas danced on the village squares, Carnival floats and parades and Holy Week processions. Spring festivals, popular and traditional dances alternate with international music festivals and parades of “giants”. Festivals of troubadours and displays of craft work blend in with pilgrim rituals and maritime processions. Here the Dance of Death, there a Firework Competition. Here an open-air rice party, there a shepherds’ festival. Here the suquet fish stew day, there the sea urchin festival, and so on and so forth in an endless list of village festivals and festivities. Just go to your nearest tourist office and ask for the printed calendar of events and get more fun out of your stay with us. Of special interest are the events declared of national interest, such as: Les Enramades or floral carpet festival in Arbúcies, the Plantada de l'Arbre del Maig and Ball del Cornut festival in Cornellà del Terri on Easter Monday; the living Way of the Cross in Sant Hilari Sacalm on Good Friday; the Dance of Death in Verges on Holy Thursday; the Virgin of Tura festival in Olot on 8 September; Nativity plays and tableaux in December, and the Hobby Horse dance in Sant Feliu de Pallerols on Pentecost Sunday and Monday.

GASTRONOMY
Gastronomic excellence is a feature of the whole Costa Brava and Pirineu de Girona region. Wherever you go, you will always be able to enjoy the pleasure of natural cooking, made with fresh, seasonal products, traditional, sophisticated, creative and inspired. The main feature is a combination of quality products from the sea and the mountains, such as chicken with crayfish. Each area has its own specialities: on the coast, sea cuisine based on the fruits of the sea (fish, shellfish, etc.), exciting combinations like fish suquet and black rice; the mountain areas have excellent meat and sausages, and good combinations such as veal with mushrooms. We might note, finally, that our cuisine is one of the foremost Mediterranean cuisines, recognised internationally as a model of quality, variety, balance and health.
THE MEDITERRANEAN CULTURES
• Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll
• Modernist church in Lloret
• Girona Cathedral • Archaeology Museum of Catalonia. Ullastret
• Sant Pere de Rodes
The megalithic monuments of the Albera mountain range, the Serinyà Historic Caves Park, the Cova d’en Daina dolmen in Romanyà de la Selva, the Iberian settlement at Ullastret and the Greco-Roman city of Empúries provide us with a millennial testimony that has still the power to surprise and move visitors.
Archaeology
Visitors are offered the essence of a millennial heritage that transports them into a magical world of unique religious, civil and military constructions. Do not miss the monasteries of Sant Pere de Rodes, Sant Joan de les Abadesses, Santa Maria de Ripoll and Sant Feliu de Guíxols, the church of Sant Cristòfor in Beget, and the churches of Llanars, Molló, Santa Maria de Porqueres and Santa Maria de Vilabertran. Also noteworthy are the historic centres of Girona, Santa Pau and Besalú.
Romanesque
The thread of history goes on to offer us the valuable legacy of remarkable Gothic style buildings such as the church of Santa Maria, in Castelló d’Empúries, known as the “Empordà cathedral”; the convent of Sant Domènec, the cathedral and other historical buildings in the old quarter of Girona; the castle and the Carmelite convent in Peralada; the parish church and Montgrí castle, in Torroella de Montgrí, and the town centres of Pals, Peratallada and Sant Martí d’Empúries, amongst many others.
Gothic
This artistic style bears witness to the exquisite sensibility of the society from which it arose, with examples to be found in the altarpieces of Girona cathedral and the parish churches of Cadaqués, Palamós and Lloret de Mar. Other imposing baroque buildings include the Citadel of Roses, and the Carmelite convent and the Hospital of Sant Jaume in Olot, to name just a few examples.
Baroque
Modernism is one of the finest movements in Catalan architecture, examples of which can be admired in buildings such as the Cusí and Salleras houses in Figueres, the Serinyena house in Cadaqués, the Casino dels Nois in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, the Armstrong cork factory in Palafrugell, the Masramon and Solà-Morales houses in Olot, the Masó and Ensesa houses and the La Punxa building in Girona, the Vichy Catalan spa in Caldes de Malavella, the Bonada and Sant Miquel de la Roqueta houses in Ripoll, and the Casal in Camprodon.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
We care for the body and the mind.
The ancient Romans, great builders and users of thermal springs, baths and relaxation, massage and body-care areas, were the people who originally coined the phrase “a healthy mind in a healthy body”.
The whole Costa Brava-Pirineu de Girona region is in itself a great place for spas, thermal waters, health and relaxation, and you will find here numerous specialist health and beauty establishments.
These sanctuaries give a warm welcome to visitors seeking health and well-being. Expert professional hands will help you forget the stresses and strains of the world in which we live and enable you to rediscover the intense but often neglected pleasure of caring for yourself.
HEALTH AND BEAUTY
NATURAL AREAS
People give names to things, probably in order not to forget them. In the province of Girona, naming the natural parks of the Garrotxa Volcanic Area, Cadí-Moixeró, Cap de Creus, Montseny and the Medes Islands would have been almost a waste of time, since the singular nature of these places is so striking that visitors will leave with an indelible memory in their minds and hearts. Nowhere as here has the beauty and power of nature shown itself so varied and full of subtlety. Nowhere as here, where protected natural areas account for 30% of the surface area, have nature and life been so fierce and passionate.

SKIING: THE FIVE RESORTS
Five resorts, four for alpine skiing and one (Guils Fontanera) for cross-country skiing make up the range of winter-sport options in the Pirineu de Girona. La Molina, Masella, Vall de Núria and Vallter 2000 have now become skiing classics in Catalonia, at a time of a real leap forward due to improved services and facilities. The Alp 2500 area, thanks to the connection between La Molina and Masella, can offer the largest skiable area in the Pyrenees, with a surface area of 100 kilometres. With their close proximity to Mediterranean Sea, the ski resorts in Girona province offer visitors the added bonus of a mild climate and clear sunny skies that make for pleasant, comfortable skiing.

• Vallter 2000
Extensive, manicured carpets of green merge harmoniously with nature to provide over twenty golf courses. Stimulus and pleasure, challenge and relaxation: a wide range of sensations await visiting players on the carefully designed golf courses of the Costa Brava and the Pirineu de Girona, among which we find the PGA European course. Players can select different levels of difficulty and practice either standard golf or pitch and putt in the landscape of their choice. What about a game of golf against a backdrop of the Mediterranean sea, or surrounded by pine-trees, or perhaps in a mountain setting, at the foot of the Pyrenees?

THE SPORTING LIFE
Nature has been so generous to the area that man has only needed to make a slight effort to bring a wide range of sporting possibilities within reach: from natural outdoor sports such as rock climbing and trekking, with routes excellently sign-posted according to international regulations, canyoning, winter skiing, paragliding, canoeing, etc., to other sports that call for special facilities, such as parachuting, tennis, rowing, athletics, horseback riding, etc. For cycling trips we recommend following the course of the greenways, former railway lines that link Girona-Olot, Ripoll-Sant Joan de les Abadesses-Ogassa, Girona-Sant Feliu de Guíxols, or using the services of the various mountain bike centres strategically located around the region.
Finally, we should not forget one of the most notable features of the Costa Brava, the narrow paths winding their way along the coastline between the rocks and the pine trees: the coast paths.

Feeling the cool water slipping over your skin, the caress of the waves, the taste of salt and the heat of the sun are just some of the pleasures of engaging in water sports. The sensuality of the sea pervades all the activities which visitors might want to try, from swimming, sailing, skiing, windsurfing, kayaking, snorkeling, etc., to the dream-like sensations of sub-aqua diving, found all along the Costa Brava. The sea is central to this area and offers visitors an endless source of activities and a challenge to test their skills.
