Tropical Climate

-Warm weather-High Humid-Rainfall-Moonsoon

Issue: Why Integration, At what extend can it be use

Environmental concern = Sustainability A poor relation between structure and

Nature Local Design and Cultural values are being

forgotten by the appearance of Modernization

Re-adaptation of Malay vernacular Architecture to achieve Thermal Comfort toward Sustainable Design in Sekeping Serendah, Selangor.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What is thermal comfort and what are the factors the affect the level of comfort?

2. What are the Malays vernacular architectural qualities employed in Sekeping Serendah to reach thermal effectiveness?

3. According to the natural aspects, how does each of the features contributed in incorporating the modern design in tropical region of Sekeping Serendah?

4. How does the methods act as a strategies and help in minimizing the environment factors.

5. To what extend may the vernacular architecture be adapted to contemporary buildings in order to create a better interior environment for the occupants as well as maintaining the aesthetic of the specific building

QUESTION 11- What is thermal comfort and what are the factors the affect the level of comfort?

Tropical climate: Environmental Factors

• Air Temperature

• Humidity

• Air Movement

• Radiant Temperature

THERMAL COMFORT

Thermal comfort is considered to be a principal requirement that is usually demanded of by occupants of accommodation units. A compatible indoor climate design is actually a modification of the external environmental system and is designed to provide comfort for occupants. There is a reciprocal relationship between climate and man in both indoor and outdoor areas. Thermal comfort plays a significant role in organizing that relationship and in activating it, thus making an area inhabitable and well adapted for daily existence.

The comfort zone is, 22.8 oC < ET < 26.1 oC for summer, 20.0 oC < ET < 23.9 oC for winter. The comfort zones are intended to provide an acceptable thermal environment for occupants wearing typical indoor clothing and near sedentary activity. Acceptable thermal environment is an environment which at least 80% of the occupants would find thermally acceptable

Tropical climate: Design Consideration

-Building Orientation

-Materials

-Site context

-Openings

-Building Construction

QUESTION 2 What are the Malays vernacular architectural qualities employed in Sekeping Serendah to reach thermal effectiveness?

Introduction of Malay Architecture

• Design with Nature Architecture

• The Use of Natural Materials

• Communal and Nature Focus

• Style differ from state

• Good Climatic Design

Malay Architecture Design Features

• Elevated

• Lightweight materials (sustainable)

• Overhang roof

• Large open spaces

• Ventilation at body level

• Surrounding

QUESTION 3 According to the natural aspects, how does each of the features contributed in incorporating the modern design in tropical region of Sekeping Serendah?

Sustainable Materials

Timber

Use as theme for timber shed within the retreat

Trees act as structure and for aesthetic to blend with the nature

To keep the idea of traditional style

Light weight materials

Other MaterialsOther Materials are used to improve the design of the building. However sustainable strategies are use to keep the idea of “Natural” and “ ecology”

Steel

Glass

- Structural support- Framing- Furniture

- Glass shed- Glass Box

Concrete- Use for interior space

Brick

- Use for façade - Give the essence of earthy

Elevated rooms

• Elevated room and structure

• To capture higher wind

• Minimal interference of slope

• Achieve privacy for the room while

achieving openness at the same time

Tropical Forest

• Environmental friendly

• Provide shading

• Provide Fresh Air

• Understanding the importance of

Nature

Openings-Openness

• Larger that The Traditional one:

-to capture more air from the trees

- Provide more soft shadow from the trees

- Louvers as outlet

- Operable openings

• Larger that The Traditional one:

- No real partition

- Passage for ventilation and shading

- Promote air movement

Overhangs Roof

• Allow large shaded area

• Allow windows to be open

• Protection against Downpours

QUESTION 4 How does the methods act as a strategies and help in minimizing the environmental factors.

Sekeping Serendah

Sustainable design

Heat Gain

-Utilize recycled Material-Local/ Regional Materials-Minimize the need of Materials

-Maximize a green surrounding-Involve the orientation

-Minimize the need of walls/Columns to make the use of the natural surrounding as structure

GMNatural Factors issues

-High thermal mass-High heat capacity-Low heat conductivity-Thermal Insulation-Durable

QUESTION 5 To what extend may the vernacular architecture be adapted to contemporary buildings in order to create a better interior environment for the occupants as well as maintaining the aesthetic of the specific building

The incorporation of vernacular and modern architecture improves the design of the building by offering the residents the practical and comfort space without sacrificing the aesthetic value to the rich historical heritage, both architectural styles play a vital part to reach thermal comfort, thus, safeguarding the spatial quality without discriminating other architectural features.
