ntes, augures del buentiempo, mensajeras de la
natalidad, viajeras. Hoy,aves migratorias convertidas

natural, llegan a pesar
de 30 a 600 kilos

nce, they were forecasters of good
weather, couriers of babies, travel-
lers. Now they are migratory birds
that have become sedentary, native to
Africa, Europe and Asia. In recent years,
the mild climate and abundance of food
has led them to become our neighbours all
year round.

able acrobatics over our heads. Often, immersed in the maelstrom of every-
day life, we stop to enjoy the spectacle that the White Stork offers us.
storks have established a unique colony well
worth visiting. On the electricity or telephone
pylons they build their majestic nest, bona fideworks of natural engineering that can weigh
from 30 to 600 kilos.
It is not uncommon to see them doing acrobat-
ics in order to reach the nests, or leave them,
energetically deploying their almost two-metre
wingspan and communicating with each
other with their characteristic bill clapping, or
incubating their clutches of three or four eggs,
which each pair nurses every year in the same
nest, in the same place.

The White Stork was declared a protected species in 1981 and is included
in the national and regional catalogues of endangered species. A hobby-
horse of ornithologists and environmentalists, the true reality of this beauti-ful and yet tragic species on our planet is a life amid high-voltage cables,
roads, poisons and pesticides
Curiously, a bird that uses manmade structures to build its nests (belfries,
roofs, electrical pylons) reaching out to us in search of protection against
possible predators, has humans as its greatest source of danger.
So lets look up to the sky and, while we still can, enjoy the daring and
beautiful spectacle of life, death and the law of gravity, offered to us year
after year by our acrobatic neighbours, the White Storks. n
