Other highlights were a beach stay with the Lawrence’s at Aireys Inlet, her parent’s holiday to Australia in February, her birthday party at Grant and Margie’s and a helicopter ride over King’s Canyon during the outback safari. Charlotte admitted to putting on some weight whilst in Australia, a surprising thing given her passion for the athletics track and her admission about not being overly fond of Australian food (especially meat pies and our fake cheese!) However, Australian chocolate did get the thumbs up as did Leigh Baker’s home-made sausage rolls, so the source of those extra calories has been revealed!

This Week’s Meeting: The membership bandwagon kept rollin’ along today with the induction of our latest member, Grant Stephenson. A former colleague of President Grant, new member Grant has attended several of our functions over the years and was obviously impressed with what he has seen. Grant was inducted under the classification of Management Consulting and he and wife Terri were individually introduced to members and guests at the conclusion of today’s meeting. Welcome aboard Grant and Terri! President Grant then announced that a further donation of $65,000 had been made by our extremely generous benefactors towards the Kenyan fistula repair programme, exciting news which will see another 200 ladies undergo life-changing surgery. A wonderful result for the patients and for our Club’s International Committee as project facilitator, all made possible by the selfless contribution of our magnificent donors. Exchange student Charlotte Salmon was today’s guest speaker. Charlotte arrived last August and has delighted all who have had the pleasure of getting to know her. She has attended many of our meetings and has been an enthusiastic helper at many Club events.

Charlotte described many of the experiences she has shared with her host families which included a trip to Tassie, taking part in the Melbourne Colour Run, her farm stay with Grant and Margie during which a new foal was named ‘Charlie’ in her honour, attending the Australian Open and holidaying in Thailand thanks to the generosity of host parents Anne Sparkes and Terry White.

Charlotte said that she has learnt a lot about herself during the exchange and that she has grown up considerably due to the separation from her biological family. Her advice to others contemplating exchange – go for it! Asked if our Club could do anything to improve the quality of the exchange program, Charlotte responded that while she thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with each of her host families, six was probably too many and involved a bit too much moving, seemingly just after she had settled in. Charlotte concluded by thanking all the families who had looked after her and everyone who had gone out of their way to make her feel so welcome. We will all miss our French daughter, sister and friend!

Responding to several questions, Charlotte said that her best memories would be of Australian wildlife although President Grant was quick to point out that this affection did not extend to any type of spider! A rare disappointment was not being able to go surfing after school every day, an expectation she held prior to her arrival given Australia’s enormous coastline. Charlotte also said that the school day here was easy stretching from 9am-3pm compared with 8am-6pm in France.

Further Australian Government support to eradicate polio

This contribution follows a $50 million commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative from 2011 to 2014 announced by the Prime Minister at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth in October 2011. The Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister applauded the leadership shown by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and Rotary International on polio. The Gates Foundation is contributing US$1.8 billion for the Polio Endgame Strategic Plan 2013 – 2018, which is one-third of the total budget. Australia has a proud history of support for polio eradication. From 1912 to 1972, more than 30,000 cases of paralytic poliomyelitis were reported in Australia, and a number of polio survivors in Australia today still live with the pain and debilitation of post-polio syndrome.

in 2012, polio remains endemic in only Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. The world now has polio eradication within its reach. This would be the second disease to be eradicated globally after small pox and a major victory for international aid and public health. The new contribution brings Australia's total commitment to polio eradication to over $130 million. The aim is to help eradicate polio and strengthen routine immunisation.

28 May 2013 Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Foreign Minister Bob Carr today announced further funding to help eradicate polio – a debilitating disease that continues to strike the world's most vulnerable people, especially children. Australia will provide $80 million over four years from 2015 to 2018 to help finish the job and achieve worldwide polio eradication.

It was Australia's Sir Clem Renouf who, as President of Rotary International in 1978 and 1979, led the international campaign to vaccinate every child against polio. As a result of these early efforts by Rotary, the global community came together in 1988 to launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Since 1988, there has been a reduction in the number of polio cases by 99.9 per cent. Following the certification of India as polio-free

Stop cut apples browning in your child’s lunch box by securing with a rubber band.

Overhaul your linen cupboard – store bed linen sets inside one of their own pillowcases and there will be no more hunting through piles for a match.

A tip for holiday packing. Store shoes inside shower caps to stop dirty soles rubbing on your clothes. And you can find them in just about every hotel!

Monica and Michael, owners of the East Pantry at 14 Centreway, Keilor East have a Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. collection box on their counter. They do not take tips but encourage their customers to donate to local charities. Monica says they are happy to support the Rotary Club of Essendon because of the great work the Club does in the community. It has always been their philosophy to encourage staff and customers to be community focused. The Rotary box has been cashed in on two occasions and a total of $210 has been collected. A great effort. Thanks to Monica, Michael and the customers of The East Pantry. If your local coffee shop would also like to have a collection box, please contact Glenn Smith.
