This is a living document that represents the policies as of publication but is subject to change and revision.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2017 – 2018 school year to provide

our students the best opportunity for success, we are

asking for your continued support of Paramount High

School. We will continue to contact you regarding

the success of your student. The Student/Parent

Handbook is a guide to support our students to be at

their best throughout the school year. We have

implemented the foundations of the Safe and Civil

School (SCS) Positive Behavior Intervention and

Support (PBIS) and will continue to practice the

components to allow instruction to occur in our

classrooms. Our teachers will continue to implement

a proactive positive approach to classroom

disruptions. We realize that our students sometimes

have difficulty in their decision making. We will

continue to support students and allow them to

practice through guided interventions to make better

decisions. Our goals this year includes; reduction in

tardiness, truancy and absenteeism, as well as

classroom referrals.

School safety is our number one priority at

Paramount High School and we will continue to work

on fostering a respectful and responsible school

climate and culture. We will implement a schoolwide

Positive Behavior Intervention Support plan to assure

safety for all. The Safe and Civil program has a 20

year history to help foster effective positive student

behavior. Assistant Principal, Mr. Ortega is currently

providing the foundation for Paramount High School.

The impact that SCS PBIS Program has on school in

regards to academic achievement has been extremely

positive. The continued adoption of the principles

looks for positive outcomes to support the needs of

all of our students.

Bienvenidos al año escolar 2017-2018, para

proporcionar a nuestros alumnos la mejor

oportunidad de éxito estamos pidiendo su apoyo

continuo a la escuela secundaria de Paramount.

Seguimos en contacto con usted en relación con el

éxito del su estudiante. El manual para

estudiantes/padres es una guía para apoyar a los

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The Fine Arts or Foreign Language requirements

may be met by taking ten (10) credits of Foreign

Language or ten (10) credits in any of the following

courses: Any Visual and Performing Arts

Department course, Home Furnishing/Home Arts,

Photography, Graphic Design, ROP Dance, or ROP

Acting.

The Mathematics requirements must be met by

completing a total of thirty (30) credits in the

Mathematics Department including completion of

Algebra 1/ Two Year Algebra 1B, Geometry/Two

Year Geometry A or higher plus a third year [10

credits] of math that must meet the PUSD Math

Graduation Requirements.

The Science requirement must be met by

completing 10 credits in Biology or other approved

Life Science courses and 10 credits in Physics,

Chemistry, or other approved Physical Science

Courses.

The following courses meet the Physical Education

requirement: all athletic team programs,

Cheerleading, Pageantry, J.R.OT.C., and Marching

Band.

Maximum credit allowed for work as a Teacher’s

Aide (T.A.) and Business Intern is ten (10) credits.

Maximum credit allowed for PE/Athletics is forty

(40) credits.

Students who need to make up courses have the

opportunity to enroll in Summer School and

Extended Day Courses.

CREDIT DEFICIENCIES

Students who fall behind in credits may make up

courses/credits with Counselor approval for the

following:

Summer School

Extended Day

Adult School Learning Lab

Adult School Regular Classes

Regional Occupational Programs – minimum age

16 years old or a Junior

Community College – with Counselor and/or

Administrative approval

Directed Studies – with Counselor and/or

Administrative approval

Exceptions to these regulations may be granted upon

written recommendation of the Counselor and with the

approval of the Principal.

All students fulfilling all academic and citizenship

requirements, and who do not have ANY

OUTSTANDING DEBTS, and have submitted verified

proof of completion of all requirements to the Principal

by 9:30 a.m. on the Monday prior to graduation, will be

able to participate in the commencement ceremony.

clases que no sean de Educación Física.

El máximo de créditos que se aceptará por ser

Asistente de Maestro es diez (10) créditos. El

máximo de créditos que se permite obtener a través

de Educación Física/ Equipos Atléticos es diez

(10) créditos.

Alumnos quienes ocupen recuperar cursos que

reprobaron tienen la oportunidad de tomar clases

durante el verano o durante Día Extendido.

ACADEMIC BANDS

It is the intent of the Paramount High School staff to

have all students complete their four years with a high

school diploma. In an effort to assist students in meeting

this goal as well as their life goals the Academic Bands

were established. Students fall into the Academic Band

categories by the number of credits they have

successfully earned. Students need 220 credits to

graduate from PHS and earn these credits by receiving a

grade of A, B, C, or D in their courses (5 credits per

class). Note: students who receive an “F” for a class do

not earn credit. Students may fall into one of the three

possible Academic Bands:

Academic Band 1 - On track to graduation

Academic Band 2 - Potential Summer Grad -

In danger of falling into academic probation

Academic Band 3 - Potential - Non –Grad - On

academic probation

Academic Band 1 students are moving towards

graduating with their class in June of their senior year

while Academic Band 2 and Academic Band 3 students

are on the road to a Summer School graduation or are a

potential non-grad who will go on to the Adult School to

receive an Adult School diploma.

NOTE: Students falling into Academic Band 3 are on

academic probation, and therefore, cannot participate in

any school activities including, but not limited to,

Homecoming Dance, Winter Formal, Prom, and Senior

Activities. Academic Band 2 students are seen as in

danger of being placed on academic probation, but they

may participate in school activities. The Academic

Bands by grade level are as follows:

12th Grade—Senior Year

11th Grade—Junior Year

EXPECTATIVAS Y NORMAS ACADEMICAS

Es la intención de toda la facultad de la Preparatoria de

Paramount que los alumnos reciban su diploma a la

conclusión de sus cuatro años. Para obtener esta meta y

sus planes para el futuro, se han establecido las Normas

Académicas que colocan en grupos denominados

dependiendo en la cantidad de créditos que se han

acumulado hasta ese momento. Para graduarse de la

Preparatoria de Paramount, los alumnos deben obtener

220 créditos que se acumulan al recibir una A, B, C o D

en sus cursos (5 créditos por clase). Aquellos

estudiantes quienes reciben “F” (Reprobado) en una

clase no reciben crédito. Las Normas Académicas se

basan en el siguiente criterio:

GENERAL INFORMATION

BIKES AND SKATEBOARDS

Bikes and skateboards are to be locked in the bike rack

compound before school (located West of Room 111 -

near Main Gate). The school will not assume liability

for losses. Bikes and skateboards are not to be ridden

on campus. Skateboards CANNOT be carried on

campus during school hours. If anyone rides a bike or

skateboard on campus, the bike or skateboard may be

confiscated and only a parent may pick it up.

BUS REGULATIONS

Bus transportation to and from school is very limited.

Only those students living in the extreme southern

portion of our district will have bus transportation

provided. When students receive their I.D., those

eligible to ride the bus will have the bus insignia printed

on their cards. Students are to ride only the buses to

which they are assigned and are not to invite non-

students to ride school buses. Improper conduct while

riding the bus will lead to disciplinary action and the

possibility that the privilege will be revoked. A bus

pass must be shown upon entering the bus. Students will

be required to sign a BUS CONTRACT at the beginning

of the school year.

CLOSED CAMPUS POLICY

Paramount High School is a “CLOSED CAMPUS”.

This means that students are not permitted to leave the

school grounds at any time during the school day

without a permit to leave grounds issued by the

Attendance Office. When applying for a permit to leave

campus, students should present a note from their

parents or guardians to the Attendance Office before

8:30 a.m. Also, be sure to check out with the

Attendance Office before you leave campus. Failure to

follow the proper procedures will be considered an

unexcused absence.

EMERGENCY OR EARLY RELEASE TO PARENT

and/or GUARDIAN

In regards to taking students out of school during class,

Paramount Unified School District is dedicated to

providing protected and uninterrupted instructional time to

allow the students to focus on their subject matter, for that

reason office staff are instructed not to interrupt class time

until the last ten minutes of the class. Parents are strongly

encouraged to schedule all appointments after school and to

abide by the above mentioned regulation. However, in the

case of an emergency a parent/guardian may request the

early release of their student by reporting to the Attendance

Office in person with valid Photo Identification. The

student will be located and issued an Off-Campus Pass to

leave grounds with his/her parent/guardian once signing-

out in the Attendance Office. Parents requesting student

release during class hours should send the student with a

note requesting time and reason for student’s release and

provide a valid contact number.

INFORMACIÓN GENERAL

BICICLETAS Y PATINETAS

Las bicicletas deben dejarse con candado en el área para

bicicletas (localizada cerca de la puerta sobre la Avenida

Downey). Las bicicletas y las patinetas no se pueden

utilizar dentro del plantel. Los estudiantes NO pueden

cargar sus patinetas durante las horas de escuela. Si

alguien utiliza su bicicleta o patineta en el plantel ésta

podría ser confiscada y solamente el padre/tutor puede

recogerla.

REGLAS PARA EL USO DEL AUTOBÚS

El servicio de transporte de y a la escuela es muy

limitado. Se les va a proveer transporte en autobús

únicamente a aquellos alumnos que vivan en la parte sur

extrema de nuestro Distrito. Aquellos estudiantes

elegibles para abordar el autobús tendrán una etiqueta

engomada en su tarjeta de identificación. Los

estudiantes deben abordar únicamente esos autobuses

que se les han sido asignados y no deben invitar a

personas que no sean estudiantes a que aborden los

autobuses escolares. Conducta inapropiada mientras se

está a bordo del autobús resultara en una acción

disciplinaria y la posibilidad de que les sea revocado

este privilegio.

PLANTEL CERRADO

La Escuela Preparatoria Paramount es un “PLANTEL

CERRADO”. Esto significa que a los alumnos no se les

permite en ningún momento salir de las instalaciones de

la escuela durante el día sin permiso otorgado por la

Oficina de Asistencia. Cuando se solicita un permiso

para salir de las instalaciones de la escuela, los alumnos

deben presentar a la Oficina de Asistencia una nota de

sus padres o tutores antes de las 8:30am. También,

deben asegurarse de pasar a la Oficina de Asistencia

antes de salir de la escuela. El no seguir estos

procedimientos apropiados se considerará como

ausencia injustificada.

SALIDAS ANTICIPADAS O DE EMERGENCIA

El PUSD está dedicado a proveer una educación sin

interrupciones. Por esta razón nuestro personal de

oficinas ha sido instruido a no interrumpir clases hasta

los últimos diez minutos de clase en casos de

emergencia. Padres se les pide que hagan sus citas

después de clases. Sin embargo, en caso de emergencias

que un padre/tutor solicite la salida de un estudiante, el

padre/tutor se tiene que reportar a la Oficina de la

Asistencia con identificación válida. El estudiante será

localizado y sé le dará un pase para salir de la escuela

con su padre/tutor después de haber firmado el permiso

correspondiente. Los padres que soliciten que el alumno

salga durante horas de clase debe mandar al alumno

indicando el tiempo y motivo al igual que proporcionar

un número de teléfono corriente. El no presentar una

nota resultara en que tengan que esperar hasta los

últimos 10 minutos del final de clase.

GRADING POLICY

Students will be graded based upon the PUSD criteria

for academic performance as follows:

NOTE: Students receive five (5) credits per class by

receiving a grade of A, B, C, or D in their courses.

LIBRARY

The Library is open every day before and after school as

well as during lunch for students to check out books and

complete research for classes. There are a limited

number of personal computers available in the library

for student use.

LOST AND FOUND

Lost items are to be turned in to the Attendance Office.

Students can check in the Attendance Office for any lost

items. Paramount High School is not responsible for

items left in the gym locker or any other area around

campus including bathrooms and classrooms.

LOST TEXTBOOK/DEBT POLICY

Students who have lost, stolen, or damaged

textbooks/library books or athletic/music equipment will

incur a debt with Paramount High School. According to

Education Code 48904.3, report cards, grades, diplomas,

and transcripts will be withheld from all students who

owe debts for damaged, destroyed, stolen, or borrowed

district property until parents/guardians have paid for

the damages or the items have been returned in the same

condition as which they were borrowed. Paramount

High School does not accept checks.

MONEY AND VALUABLES

Students should only bring money to school for lunch or

for a school approved purpose. Money should be kept

in a wallet or purse. Students are not to bring valuable

articles to school. The school cannot compensate them

for their loss.

STUDENT LUNCH PROGRAM

The Paramount Unified School District takes part in the

National School Lunch and/or Breakfast programs.

Meals are served every school day. Students may buy

lunch for $2.50 and/or breakfast for $1.50. Eligible

students may receive meals free or at a reduced price of

₵.40 for lunch and/or ₵.30 for breakfast. Students may

buy milk for ₵.45. Students may apply for free or

reduced price meals by completing an application

available in the Counseling Office.

POLIZA DE CALIFICACIONES

Los alumnos serán calificados académicamente según

BIBLIOTECA

La biblioteca está abierta todos los días antes y después

OBJETOS PERDIDOS

Los objetos extraviados se encuentran en la Oficina de

Asistencia donde alumnos pueden preguntar por algún

objeto extraviado. Prendas de ropa sin reclamarse por

más de un mes será donada. La escuela no se hace

responsable por artículos que los alumnos dejen en los

vestidores.

LIBROS EXTRAVIADOS Y DEUDAS

Los alumnos que hayan perdido o dañado libros de

texto, de la biblioteca o equipo de atletismo/música

incurrirán una con la escuela. De acuerdo al Código de

Educación 48904.3, las boletas de calificaciones,

calificaciones, diplomas y expedientes académicos serán

retenidos de aquellos estudiantes que hayan dañado,

destruido, robado o prestado objetos propiedad del

PUSD. Una vez que se hayan entregado o pagado los

artículos se entregaran los documentos. La escuela no

acepta cheques.

DINERO Y VALUABLES

El dinero que los alumnos traen a la escuela es

solamente para el pago de su almuerzo o por algún

propósito aprobado por la escuela. Los alumnos no

deben traer objetos de valor a la escuela La escuela no

puede compensar la pérdida de esos objetos.

PROGRAMA DE ALMUERZO ESTUDIANTIL

PUSD participa en los programas de Almuerzo y/o

Desayuno Nacionales Escolares. Las comidas se sirven

todos los días. Los alumnos pueden comprar almuerzo

por $2.00 y/o un desayuno por $1.50. Los alumnos que

son elegibles pueden recibir su comida gratis o a precio

MEDICAL SERVICES INFORMATION

On June 27, 1986, the Governor signed into law

Assembly Bill 1541, Chapter 196, which adds

Section 46010.1 to the Education Code. This law

requires that the governing board of each school

district shall, each academic year, notify pupils in

grades 7 - 12 inclusive and the parents or guardians

of all pupils enrolled in the district, that school

authorities may excuse any pupil from school for the

purpose of obtaining confidential medical services

without the consent of the pupil’s parent or guardian.

OFF-CAMPUS PASSES

All medical appointments are to be made during

after-school hours. Please note that by taking your

student out of class you will be interrupting the

learning process and may inhibit your student’s

understanding of the subject matter. However, if a

student must be released he/she must bring in a note

from their parent/guardian before school to obtain an

off-campus pass from the Attendance Office.

Students leaving campus prior to the end of the

regular school day must sign out with Attendance

Office and have an Off-Campus Pass in their

possession. Students leaving campus without

permission and an Off-Campus Pass will be

considered truant and will be subject to disciplinary

action.

PASSES

Any student who is out of class during class time

must have in his/her possession a school issued

HALL PASS. (This includes all teacher

assistants/business internship students.)

P. E. UNIFORM POLICY

All physical education students will be expected to

purchase the school adopted uniform bearing the

Paramount High P.E. logo. The two piece uniform

will be available for purchase during the first week of

school and will be sold during this time for $20.00.

Shirts are $8.00 and Shorts are $12.00 (cash or

money orders only – NO CHECKS). Any student

enrolled in a physical education class must purchase

this uniform as well as a combination lock for their

gym locker. Locks may be purchased in the Student

Store or students may bring a combination lock from

home.

INFORMACIÓN SOBRE SERVICIOS MÉDICOS

El 6/27/1986, el Gobernador firmó como ley la

Legislatura 1541, Capítulo 196, que agrega la sección

si su hijo / a debe salir temprano los alumnos deben

traer una nota de sus padres / tutores antes que

empiecen las clases para obtener en la Oficina de

Asistencia un pase para salir del plantel escolar. Los

alumnos que vayan a salir de las instalaciones antes

de que termine el día escolar, deben firmar su salida

en la Oficina de Asistencia y deben tener en su poder

un pase para salir del plantel escolar. Los alumnos

que salgan del plantel sin permiso y sin un pase serán

considerados con falta injustificada y estarán sujetos

a una acción disciplinaria.

PERMISOS

Todo alumno que esté fuera de su clase durante horas

de clases debe tener en su poder un pase por escrito

excusando al alumno de la clase. Los alumnos tienen

la responsabilidad de pedir a su maestro un pase por

escrito y mostrar el pase cuando se lo pidan. (Esto

incluye a todos los ayudantes o alumnos internos de

los maestros)

POLÍZA SOBRE EL UNIFORME DE EDUC. FÍSICA

Se espera que TODOS los alumnos de educación física

compren el uniforme que porta el logo de Educación Física

(P.E.) de la Preparatoria de Paramount fue adoptado por la

escuela. El uniforme de dos piezas estará disponible para

que lo compren durante la primera semana de clases y

durante este tiempo será vendido por $20.00. Las camisas

STUDENT ACTIVITIES/ATHLETICS

All students are encouraged to buy an Associated

Student Body Sticker for $40.00. This sticker admits

students free to athletic contests (except CIF playoffs

and away non-league games) and gives a discount when

purchasing dance tickets and other activities. ASB

stickers will be available for sale during registration and

throughout the school year.

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS

Paramount High School is proud to have a number of

clubs and organizations in which students can

participate. This group includes service clubs such as

Corsaires, Future Homemakers of America, and Interact-

Rotary; interests clubs such as Basketball; Track;

Drama; curricular clubs such as ELD and Science; and

organizations such as Band, Cheer, Choir, Porthole

(newspaper), and Yearbook.

DANCES AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES All students are encouraged to participate in school planned

activities. However, please be reminded, participation in

activities is considered a student privilege. These come

with responsibility on the part of the student in order to be

allowed to attend school functions and activities. These

activities and functions include but are not limited to:

school dances, such as Homecoming, Winter Formal;

Senior Prom; athletic events, field trips, college visits; end

of the year – Senior Activities including Graduation.

It takes a great deal of pride in the success of its

dances as demonstrated by the high participation rate

at the dances. Students attending any dance must

complete a student contract for themselves and one

for an outside guest they may be planning to invite.

In order to attend dances, students must be in good

standing, and in Band 1 or Band 2, have good and

regular attendance, and satisfactory classroom and

campus behavior. Students who are truant as defined

by Ed. Code 48620 and students on suspension on the

day of the dance are not allowed to attend the dance.

Students attending as guest must be approved by their

current school. Former PHS students must have been

in good standing prior to checking out. Buena Vista

students will be approved on an individual basis. All

outside guests must be under 21 years of age. PHS

Administration reserves the right to refuse admittance

to any student.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR AFTER

SCHOOL PROGRAMS

(Students may not participate in interscholastic sports

until insurance coverage is in effect.) To participate

in our after school athletic and activity programs, a

student must meet our academic requirements. This

means that every student MUST MAINTAIN A 2.0

G.P.A. during the previous grading period and be

satisfactorily progressing towards graduation. A

student who has less than a 2.0 G.P.A. will be placed

on probation for one quarter.

ASB STUDENT GOVERNMENT/LEADERSHIP

ASB Student Council/Leadership is the governing

Student Body of Paramount High School. It is made

up of elected and appointed students to serve as

school-wide leaders, class officers, and student

representatives. Students serve for a full year and a

newly elected and appointed Leadership group takes

over every Spring Semester.

El Gobierno Estudiantil se enorgullece en el éxito de sus

actividades estudiantiles. Esto se demuestra en la alta

asistencia de alumnos en cada función. Aquel alumno

que decida asistir a un baile tendrá que firmar un

contrato estudiantil para el estudiante y su invitado. Para

poder asistir a los bailes, los alumnos no pueden estar

bajo Normas Académica 1 o 2, tener buena asistencia, y

comportamiento satisfactorio. Alumnos que faltan sin

razón bajo la definición de la sección 48620 del Código

de Educación y alumnos que están bajo suspensión el

día del baile no serán permitidos asistir al baile.

Estudiantes asistiendo como invitado deben de ser

aprobados por su escuela actual. Los invitados que

asistieron a la Preparatoria de Paramount anteriormente

deben de haber estado en buen estatus antes de haber

sido dado de baja. Estudiantes de la escuela Buena

Vista serán aprobados en base individual. La

Administración de la Preparatoria de Paramount reserva

el derecho de negarle la entrada a cualquier alumno.

REQUISITOS DE PARTICIPACION EN

ACTIVIDADES EXTRA-CURRICULARES

(Los alumnos no podrán participar en los deportes ínter

escolares hasta que la cobertura del seguro tenga efecto)

Para participar en nuestros programas de atletismo y

actividades después de la escuela, el alumno solicitante

debe alcanzar nuestros requerimientos académicos. Esto

significa que cada alumno DEBE MANTENER UN

PROMEDIO DE 2.0 durante el período de

calificaciones anterior y estar progresando

satisfactoriamente hacia su graduación. Un alumno que

tiene un promedio menor de 2.0 será colocado en un

período de prueba por un trimestre.

GOBIERNO ESTUDIANTIL ESTUDIANTIL

La Mesa Directiva Estudiantil está formado por alumnos

elegidos para servir como líderes en la escuela,

representantes de aulas y otros representantes estudiantiles.

Los alumnos ofrecen sus servicios voluntarios por un año

completo mientras que los recién elegidos toman posesión

de sus puestos durante el semestre de primavera. La Mesa

Directiva Estudiantil es responsable de muchos eventos

NOTE: Those students who plan to participate in our

after school Athletic and Activity program are

encouraged to have an ASB Sticker to help defray

program costs.

STUDENT I.D. CARDS

Students will be provided a photo I.D. card at no

charge. These cards must be shown daily upon

entering campus and carried during school hours and

at all after-school events for identification purposes.

The I.D. card is necessary to purchase an ASB

sticker, borrow library books, vote in student

elections, and attend after school activities. There is

a $5.00 charge to replace the I.D. card. Failure to

have an I.D. card or the altering of an I.D. may result

in disciplinary action. Students must have an I.D. to

enter campus. Students who do not have $5.00 to

replace their I.D. card, should purchase a temporary

I.D. for $1.00. The temporary I.D. is good for one

(1) day only. Students without an I.D. card who

choose not to purchase a temporary I.D. will be

detained for processing.

STUDENT PARKING

PHS does not have student parking available.

TECHNOLOGY

PHS is a Digital High School and therefore, every

classroom is wired for Internet access. Mobile units

of laptops are available for classroom use. In

addition computers are available in the library and

Career Center for students to use for word processing

or research.

TELEPHONE CALLS DELIVERIES FOR

STUDENTS

PHS has a very large student body which makes it

impossible to accept telephone calls (including

leaving messages) and deliveries for students. In

case of an emergency, an administrator will make the

final decision.

Paramount High School will not accept items to be

given or delivered to students. This includes, but not

limited to, messages, money, food house keys, PE

clothes, class assignments, books and supplies, or

projects. The office staff has been directed not to

interrupt class instruction except for cases of

emergency. If parents insist on leaving items it will

be at their own risk; however, their student will not

be notified.

NOTA: Aquellos alumnos que planean participar en

nuestro programa de Deportes y actividades extra-

curriculares, se les aconseja que compren una

calcomanía ASB para incurrir gastos de

administración.

CÉDULAS DE IDENTICACION DEL ESTUDIANTE

A los alumnos se les proveerá de una cedula de

identificación con fotografía sin ningún cargo. Esta

cedula la deben presentar diariamente al momento de

ingresar al plantel, la deben llevar consigo durante las

horas de escuela y para las actividades después de la

escuela. La cedula de identificación es necesaria para:

comprar la calcomanía ASB, pedir libros prestados en la

biblioteca, votar para las elecciones de los alumnos y

para asistir a las actividades después de la escuela. Hay

un cargo de $5.00 para remplazar la cedula de

identificación. El no tener la cedula de identificación o

alterarla puede traer consecuencias disciplinarias.

Aquellos alumnos que no tengan $5.00 en reemplazar su

cedula deben comprar una temporal por $1.00. La

cedula temporal de identificación es valida por un (1)

día solamente. Los alumnos sin cedula que opten por no

comprar una temporal pueden tener consecuencias

disciplinarias.

ESTACIONAMIENTO ESTUDIANTIL

Debido a la continua construcción en el plantel, la

escuela no tiene estacionamiento estudiantil.

TECNOLOGÍA

PHS es una Escuela Digital y por esa razón, cada

salón tiene computadoras que están conectadas para

que se puedan usar vía la Internet. También hay

unidades móviles de computadoras inalámbricas

disponibles para uso en los salones. Además las

computadoras están disponibles en la biblioteca y en

el Centro de Profesiones para que los alumnos las

usen como procesadores de palabras o para

investigar.

LLAMADAS TELEFÓNICAS / ENTREGAS PARA

LOS ALUMNOS

La Preparatoria de Paramount tiene un alto índice de

estudiantes lo que hace imposible aceptar llamadas

telefónicas (incluyendo mensajes) y entregas para los

alumnos. En caso de una emergencia, un

administrador tomará la decisión final.

La Preparatoria de Paramount no aceptará artículos

para entregárselos a los alumnos. Esto incluye, pero

no se limita a, mensajes, dinero, llaves, comida,

uniforme de Educación Física, tareas, libros, y otros

materiales o proyectos. Se le ha indicado al personal

de las oficinas que no interrumpan las clases solo en

casos de emergencia. Si los padres insisten en dejar

artículos, será a su propia discreción, sin embargo el

personal no notificará al alumno.

VISITORS

The school policy is to accept only those visitors on

the campus who have legitimate business to attend to

at school. All visitors must sign in at the front gate

before entering campus. Visitors will be directed to

the Office immediately upon entering the school

campus. Trespassers are subject to arrest. Paramount

High School is a closed campus, and alumni are not

permitted to visit during school hours.

WORK PERMITS

All students working must have a work permit on file

at their place of employment and on file at school. In

order to qualify for a work permit students must be at

least 16 years of age and approved by their assigned

counselor. Work permit applications can be picked

up during lunch and after school in the ROP office.

The work permit will be available to the student one

day after turning in the application.

VISITANTES

La póliza de la escuela en cuanto a visitas es de aceptar

están sujetos a ser arrestados. La escuela es un plantel

durante horas de clases.

PERMISOS DE TRABAJO

Todos estudiantes que trabajan deben tener un permiso

de trabajo archivado en su lugar de empleo y en la

escuela. Para obtener un permiso de trabajo el estudiante

tiene que tener por lo menos 16 años de la edad y la

aprobación de su consejero. Las aplicaciones del

permiso de trabajo pueden ser recogidas durante el

periodo de descanso y después de escuela en la oficina

de ROP que se expedirá al siguiente día de trabajo.

COUNSELING INFORMATION HIGH SCHOOL COURSE OF STUDY

It is important that each student plan his/her program

with long-term goals in mind—getting a job, attending a

trade school, joining the military, registering at

community college, or entering a four-year

college/university. A student’s individual program

should be based on one or more of these goals. In

addition to a student’s individual goals, there are the

state content standards, the district graduation

requirements, and the California High School Exit Exam

(CAHSEE) tests that all students are required to pass in

order to receive a high school diploma.

COURSE SELECTION

Annual Registration

Students are given the opportunity in the Spring of

each school year to select courses for the following

year. It is important that these courses be selected

with parental input in light of the student’s individual

long-term goals, high school graduation

requirements, and career objectives. Course selection

represents a commitment on the part of the student

that he or she will satisfactorily complete the

schedule of classes chosen. Students must carefully

check to ensure that they take the proper prerequisites

for each course selected.

Units of Credit

Five units of credit will be earned for each campus

semester course completed with a passing grade of A, B,

C, or D. The maximum number of credits which a

student may earn in any one semester shall not exceed

40 in any combination of regular day school classes,

work experience, ROP, adult education, continuing

education, college programs, or contract independent

study. Exceptions may be made for individual students

only in unusual circumstances and when prior written

approval is granted through the school counselor.

Repeated Courses

Students may repeat a course to improve a grade;

however, duplicate units of credits will not be awarded

in the repeated course.

Off-Campus Courses

Students who wish to take off-campus courses, with the

exception of ROP, for high school credit must have

school year at the community college or adult education

center.

Es importante que cada alumno forme su plan de

estudios tomando en cuenta sus metas a largo plazo

— empleo, escuela vocacional, ejército militar,

colegio comunitario, o universidad. Para recibir un

diploma de la escuela preparatoria, además de

cumplir con sus metas individuales, el alumno

también deberá cumplir con los normas de materia

del Estado, los requisitos de graduación del Distrito,

y el Examen Estatal (CAHSEE).

Selección de Cursos

MATRICULACION ANUAL

Cada año escolar, durante la primavera, se les da a los

alumnos la oportunidad de seleccionar los cursos para el

año siguiente. Es importante que estos cursos se

seleccionen con la apoyo de los padres de familia

tomando en cuenta las metas individuales para el futuro

de cada estudiante, los requisitos de graduación y sus

objetivos profesionales. La selección de cursos, por

cumplido con los requisitos previos para cada curso que

han seleccionado.

CREDITOS

Se recibirán cinco créditos por cada curso semestral

completado con una calificación de A. B, C, o D. El

máximo número de créditos que un alumno podrá

obtener en cualquier semestre no deberá exceder 40

créditos, ya sea combinando clases regulares diarias,

clases de experiencia en el trabajo, clases de ROP,

escuela para adultos, escuela de continuación, cursos de

colegios comunitarios o de estudios independientes.

Sólo se harán excepciones en circunstancias especiales y

cuando se obtenga la aprobación escrita del consejero o

asesor escolar.

REPETICION DE CREDITOS

Los estudiantes podrán repetir un curso para mejorar

una calificación; sin embargo, no se otorgarán unidades

dobles de créditos en el curso repetido.

courses taken during the summer and/or during the

regular school year at the community college or adult

education center.

Schedule Changes

As indicated in the first paragraph, course selection

represents a commitment from the student that he or she

will satisfactorily complete the schedule of classes

chosen. However, student requests for schedule

changes are honored for the following reasons only:

Scheduling error (example- request Algebra 1 and

receive Algebra 2)

Failure to complete a prerequisite course or

requirement

Graduation or college or university requirement

omitted from schedule

Special programs such as sports, orchestra, band,

ROP, and work experience

Summer school course completion

NOTE: Students MAY NOT DROP a class after the 2nd

week of a new semester

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

All students are encouraged to participate in

extracurricular activities including clubs, student

government, sports, music, drama and other school

activities. This not only makes school more enjoyable

but also improves socialization skills. Involvement also

enhances college, scholarship, and/or job applications.

CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION

The California Scholarship Federation (CSF) is an

organization that recognizes academic excellence.

Membership is based on grades earned each semester

in certain designated courses. Students must apply for

membership during an enrollment period established

by the advisor that must occur during the first four (4)

weeks of the semester. Membership is not automatic

or compulsory. Retroactive membership may NOT be

granted to students who have not availed themselves of

the opportunity to become a member. Students must

earn a total of ten CSF points to qualify. (“A” counts

three points, a “B” counts one point, and a “B” in an

Honors- designated subject counts as two points.)

Seven of the ten points must be from classes that

require daily homework (i.e. University of California

approved classes and/or other English, mathematics,

foreign language, and social studies classes, which

require daily homework). Membership is not possible

with an “F”. Any student who is otherwise eligible for

membership, but who in the judgment of the advisor

and principal is an unworthy citizen, may be disbarred

FEDERACION DE BECAS DEL ESTADO DE

CALIFORNIA (CSF)

La Federación de Becas de California es una organización

que reconoce la excelencia académica. La afiliación a la

CSF se basa en calificaciones obtenidas cada semestre en

ciertos cursos designados. Los alumnos deben solicitar

membresía a la CSF durante el período de matriculación

establecido por el consejo, usualmente durante las primeras

cuatro semanas del semestre. La afiliación no es

automática u obligatoria ni retroactiva. NO puede

ofrecerse membresía a alumnos que no hayan aprovechado

la oportunidad de hacerse miembros de la CSF. Los

alumnos deben obtener un total de 10 puntos para calificar.

(Un “A” equivale a tres puntos, un “B”a un punto, y un “B”

en una materia clasificada como de Honores cuenta por dos

ENGLISH LEARNER STUDENTS

Pupils who are identified as English Learner students

receive support through the Accelerated English

Acquisition Program, Specially Designed Academic

Instruction in English (SDAIE) instruction, instructional

aides, and tutoring.

DISTRICT NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

The district maintains a policy of non-discrimination

STUDENT IDENTIFICATION CARD

Every student enrolled in Paramount High must carry

the appropriate Student Identification Card at all

times while on Paramount High School campus. The

student services team at Paramount High School is

committed to implementing and monitoring the

effectiveness of a comprehensive guidance program.

Each student and parent can expect services provided

in the following areas as needed.

Academic Counseling - Educational planning and

information needed to make realistic decisions

about future plans is provided, and students are

encouraged to use resources of the College and

Career Center. A college fair is held every year

and students are encouraged to participate.

Career Counseling – Students are encouraged to

use the resources of the College and Career

Personal Counseling - Responsive services

provide assistance with personal situations

requiring individual or group help, including

community referrals.

Community Service

Students are encouraged to meet with their counselor

every semester to ensure their education plan accurately

reflects the high school graduation requirements.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Responsibilities For Attendance (Education Code

48200)

The State of California mandates that all persons

between the ages of 6 and 18 years of age attend

school on a full-time basis. Parents/guardians are

legally responsible for enrolling their children in

school and also for the punctual and regular

attendance of their children. Parents/guardians must

verify the nature of all students’ full or partial day

absences. This can only be done with a written note

within three days of the child’s absence. The best

procedure is to have the student return to school with

a written note, which must be turned into the

Attendance Office before the beginning of the school

day.

It is recommended that dental and medical

appointments be made at times outside of the regular

school day, except for emergencies. It is the

student’s responsibility to develop and maintain a

consistent pattern of attendance in all classes and to

secure all make-up work for all excused absences.

Excessive tardiness and/or unexcused truancies may

lead to disciplinary action – such as In-house

suspension, SART, Saturday School, SARB,

citations, loss of credit, loss of school privilege, class

schedule modifications, alternate placement, and/or

legal action taken against the student and their

parent/guardian.

All absences left unverified by a parent/guardian

three (3) days after an absence will be marked as

unexcused. Parent(s)/guardian(s) must state the

nature of the absence on the written note.

*Notes that simply say “family emergency” or

“personal business” will be recorded as unexcused.

El Estado de California decreta que todas las personas

entre las edades de 6 a 18 años asistan a la escuela por

tiempo completo. Los padres o tutores son responsables

legalmente por matricular a sus hijos en la escuela y por

mantener una asistencia regular y puntual. Los padres o

tutores deber verificar la naturaleza de las ausencias ya

sean parciales o de día completo de los alumnos. Esto

se debe hacer enviando una nota escrita durante los

primeros tres días de la ausencia del estudiante quien

debe traer la nota escrita al regresar a la escuela a la

Oficina de Asistencia.

Se recomienda que citas médicas y dentales se

programen fuera del horario escolar, excepto en

emergencias. Es la responsabilidad del estudiante

desarrollar y mantener un hábito consistente de

asistencia en todas las clases y de reponer trabajos

cuando estén ausentes con excusa. Tardanzas y/o

ausencias excesivas podrían resultar en una acción

disciplinaria – tales como suspensión dentro de la

escuela, presentarse ante el SART (Equipo de Revisión

de la Asistencia Escolar), asistir a clases de los sábados,

presentarse ante el SARB, (Mesa Directiva de Revisión

de la Asistencia Escolar), multas, perdida de créditos,

All other absences are considered unexcused/truant

when a student is absent from school or a class without

authorization and clearance from the Attendance Office.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE

Students are encouraged to strive for perfect attendance.

Those who do so will be recognized for their efforts by one

of our student recognition programs. Perfect attendance is

defined as no period absences for a semester. The only

exceptions are absences designated as “V” and defined as

school approved athletic trips, field trips, or school office

appointments.

RETURNING FROM ABSENCE PROCEDURES

When returning from an absence, the student must bring

a note stating the reason for the absence signed by

his/her parent/guardian to the Attendance Office.

Notes should include student’s name, date of

absence, date of return, reason of absence, parent’s

phone number and signature.

Only legal parent/guardian may write reasons for

student’s absence. A note is necessary to verify

an absence no later than three (3) days after the student

returns from an absence. A phone call will not excuse a

student.

Please be reminded a written note must be turned in

even if a phone call was made. The Attendance Office

is staffed from 7:30 A.M. – 7:30 P.M. on days of school

attendance. Attendance Office telephone number is

(562) 602-6074. We will also be utilizing Attendance

Office staff and our Auto-Dialer during the days and

evenings to notify parents/guardians of unexcused

absences and/or class cuts.

TARDY POLICY

Students arriving late to school or class are subject to

the consequences of the Tardy Policy. Those students

who continue to be tardy will be placed on a SART and

/ or SARB contract and can be cited by the Sheriff

Deputy. Being tardy is a very bad habit and may affect

student grades. Tardy students cause many class

disruptions and take away valuable class time from their

peers.

SATURDAY “MAKEUP” SCHOOL

Pursuant to Education Code Section 37223, truant pupils

may be assigned to weekend classes without parent

permission. A student who has been labeled a truant per

the compulsory attendance regulations may be assigned

to Saturday School without parent permission

(Education Code Section 48260). Students not

attending Saturday School to make up their unexcused

absences may jeopardize their privilege to participate in

school activities and school functions. These activities

and functions include but are not limited to: school

dances, such as Winter Formal & Prom, athletic events,

field trips and the Graduation Ceremonial activities as

well facing possible disciplinary actions up to and

including suspension.

viajes de deportes aprobados, viajes de estudio o citas en la

oficina de la escuela.

PROCEDIMIENTOS CUANDO REGRESEN A CLASE

DESPUÉS DE UNA AUSENCIA

Cuando regresa de una ausencia, el alumno debe traer una

nota firmada por el padre o tutor indicando la razón por la

ausencia y deberá entregarla a la Oficina de Asistencia. La

nota debe tener el nombre del

alumno la fecha de la ausencia, fecha del regreso, la razón

por la ausencia, el teléfono del padre y su firma. Sólo los

padres o tutores legales pueden escribir la nota o llamar

para indicar la ausencia del estudiante. Una nota es

necesaria para verificar la ausencia, aún cuando se haya

recibido la llamada telefónica por parte del padre no más de

tres (3) días después de que el alumno regrese a la escuela.

La llamada telefónica no dispensará a un estudiante.

Por favor recuerden que una nota escrita también debe ser

entregada aún cuando se haya hecho la llamada telefónica.

El horario de la Oficina de Asistencia es de 7:30 a.m. a

7:30 p.m. en los días de clases. El teléfono de la Oficina de

Asistencia es el (562) 602-6074. También utilizamos el

personal de la Oficina de Asistencia y nuestro Marcador

Automático durante el día y por las noches para notificar a

los padres o tutores sobre ausencias injustificadas excesivas

y/o cortes de clases.

TARDY SWEEP

Debido al numero excesivo de llegadas tardes estudiantiles,

efectuaremos “TARDY SWEEP” diariamente y periodo

por periodo. Para evitar que continúen llegando tarde; se les

iniciará el contrato SART y/o SARB, podrán ser multados

o citados por el alguacil y/o podrán recibir una detención de

30-minutos después de escuela. El llegar tarde

habitualmente es una muy mala costumbre. Al llegar tarde,

los estudiantes causan interrupciones en la clase y les

desperdician tiempo valioso instructivo.

ESCUELA DE SABADOS

Conforme a la Sección del Código de Educación 37223, un

estudiante que ha sido marcado ausente sin motivo por las

regulaciones obligatorias de asistencia puede ser asignado

la escuela del sábado sin el permiso del padre (Sección

48260 del Código de Educación). Estudiantes que no

asistan a dicho mandato, pueden arriesgar su privilegio

para tomar parte en las actividades de la escuela y

funciones incluyendo pero no limitadas a: bailes escolares,

eventos deportivos, paseos y las actividades de graduación

ABSENCES BEFORE AND AFTER A HOLIDAY

Due to the volume of absences preceding school holidays,

all absences immediately on school holidays will be

unauthorized absences unless a student returns with a note

from a physician or dentist. Any exception must have

administrative approval.

EC 48260 TRUANCY DEFINITION

(a) Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education

or to compulsory continuation education who is absent

from school without valid excuse three full days in one

school year or tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute

period during the school day without a valid excuse on

three occasions in one school year, or any combination

thereof, is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance

office supervisor or to the superintendent of the school

district.

STUDENT RELEASE PROCEDURES

Research has shown that uninterrupted class time allows

students the opportunity to learn and retain more. We here

at Paramount High School are motivated to create this type

of environment for your child. Thus, our motivation has

prompted us to try and guard against interruptions to your

student’s instruction time. By adhering to the following

protocol, we along with you will eliminate such

interruptions.

CITATION FOR TRUANCY (DAYTIME CURFEW

ORDINANCE PMO 30-6.1)

On June 5, 1998, the city of Paramount’s daytime curfew

ordinance went into effect. PMO 30-6.1 authorizes the

sheriff’s department to cite all persons between the ages of

6 through 18, when they are absent from school without a

valid excuse. The minors who are present upon public

streets, highways, roads, alleys, park playgrounds or public

grounds between the hours of 8:30 A.M. and 2:30 P.M. on

days when the student’s school is in session are in

violation. This also applies to students who are in the

process of suspension, expulsion or have transfers in

progress.

PROCEDURE FOR RELEASING STUDENTS

(SEND A NOTE):

Student should drop note off in the attendance office before

school. In order to better serve you and to expedite the

release of your child, please send your student(s) to the

Attendance Office with a signed note indicating your

request for their release. The note should contain the

following information:

Student name and grade level

Date

Indicate the time you want the student released

Indicate the reason for the student’s early release

Provide a telephone number where you can be

reached in order for the attendance office personnel

to verify the note.

Must have parent/guardian signature

Notes will only be accepted from legal guardian and all

signatures will be matched with the emergency card

signatures.

a tratar de proteger de interrupciones el tiempo educativo

de su hijo. Al seguir el siguiente protocolo, nosotros, al

igual que ustedes, eliminaremos tales interrupciones.

MULTAS POR FALTAS INJUSTIFICADAS (TOQUE

DE QUEDA - PMO 30-6.1)

El 5 de junio de 1998, la ciudad de Paramount implementó

un toque de queda durante las horas del día escolar. La

regulación PMO 30- 6.1 autoriza a la policía que multe a

todas aquellas personas entre las edades de 6 a 18, cuando

falten a la escuela sin razón verificable. Aquellos alumnos

quienes se encuentren en las calles públicas, autopistas,

caminos, callejones, parques o terrenos públicos entre las

horas de 8:30am a 2:30pm en los días que deben de estar en

clases están en violación de dicha ley. Lo antecedido

también se aplica a alumnos que hayan sido suspendidos,

expulsados, o están en progreso de transferirse.

El alumno debe entregar la nota en la Oficina de Asistencia

antes de clases.

Para poder atenderlos y facilitar el proceso, por favor

mande a su hijo/a a la Oficina de Asistencia con una nota

firmada solicitando permiso. La nota debe de incluir lo

siguiente:

Nombre y año escolar del alumno

Fecha

Indique la hora que usted desea que salga su hijo

Indique la razón por la cual se está pidiendo este

permiso

Provee un número telefónico con el cual el personal

pueda verificar la nota.

Debe incluir la firma del padre/ tutor

RELEASE WITHOUT A NOTE:

To release a student who did not bring a note in

advance requires that the parent come in to the school

office and show identification. This is the type of

situation that primarily creates classroom

interruptions since we do need to call the teacher to

release the student, thus, interrupting instruction.

Therefore, if parents are here to pick up students and

the student did not bring a note, students will not be

called out of class until the last ten (10) minutes of

the class period, unless it is an extreme emergency

i.e., someone is gravely ill or an accident has

occurred. On those cases, an Administrator will

make the final decision. Students will only be

released to parent/guardian and or individuals

designated by parent/guardian on the emergency

card. Current form of identification is required; this

includes California Driver’s license, California I.D.

or a passport.

REMINDER: The Attendance Office will not accept

items to be given or delivered to students. This

includes, but not limited to, messages, money, house

keys, PE clothes, class assignments, books and

supplies, or projects. The office staff has been

directed not to interrupt class instruction except for

cases of emergency. If parents insist on leaving

items it will be at their own risk; however, their

student will not be notified

PERMISO SIN NOTA:

Para otorgarle permiso a un alumno para que salga del

plantel sin una nota se requiere que el padre venga a la

oficina de asistencia y presente su identificación. Este

método causa la mayor cantidad de interrupciones en el

salón, ya que es necesario llamar al salón para que el

maestro despida al alumno.

Por esta razón, si los padres llegan a la escuela a sacar a

FAILURE TO COMPLY

Students who fail to report to the discipline office or

who fail to comply with an assigned consequence are

deemed as exhibiting defiant/truant behavior.

Students will receive further progressive discipline at

the discretion of the Discipline Office, which may

include a citation for truancy.

ON-CAMPUS TRUANCY

Per Ed Code, students who are out of class 30

minutes or more are considered “unexcused absent.”

Students will be referred to the Discipline Office for

the remainder of the period. The accumulation of

unexcused absences will result in Saturday school,

SART/SARB referral, and possible truancy citation.

Failure to complete Saturday School will result in

loss of school activities/privileges, and other

disciplinary action to be determined up to and

including suspension.

Students that continue to accumulate tardies will go

through the SARB process, which consists of the

parent and student going to the Bellflower Court

House and meeting with the District Attorney.

Students may also receive a citation (TICKET).

ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Students should avoid bringing electronic devices

onto campus. Students who bring electronic devices

onto campus do so at their own risk. If an electronic

device (cell phone. I Pad, I Pod, earphones, etc.) is

brought onto campus, it should be kept out of sight

and not used during instructional time in class or

assemblies. Visible devices causing disruption may

be confiscated. Cell phones should be turned off or

placed on vibrate. The school cannot compensate

students for lost or stolen items including those that

were confiscated by school personnel.

VIOLATION 1

Teacher will direct the student to turn of the

device and/or confiscate it and return the

device at the end of the class period.

VIOLATION 2

Device confiscated and sent to the Discipline

Office prior to the end of the school day for

documentation. The device will be returned to

parent at a parent conference in the Discipline

Office.

Visible IPods, mp3 players, CD players,

distraction in class may be confiscated.

All confiscated items will be counted as equal

violations of the electronic device policy.

There are no separate violation counts due to

the confiscation of different types of devices.

A student’s failure to comply with an attempt

to confiscate an electronic device will be

deemed as defiance and result in disciplinary

action.

y se le asignara al estudiante dos horas de

detención después de escuela.

Cualquier aparato electrónico que sea visible o

cause una distracción será confiscado.

Todo aparato confiscado será considerado como

una violación directa de esta póliza. No habrá

diferencia en cuanto al tipo de aparato

electrónico y la consecuencia ya dictada.

Cualquier tipo de objeción a entregar el aparato

electrónico será considerado como falta de

respeto al individuo que este solicitando el

aparato y esto traerá consecuencias

disciplinarias fuertes.

EXPECTED STUDENT BEHAVIOR

Rules and regulations are established for the purpose

of maintaining an atmosphere conducive to learning.

Students who do not comply with such rules and

regulations may be counseled, reprimanded,

suspended, or in extreme cases expelled and/or

arrested as circumstances warrant in the application

of the law.

The governing board of any school district shall

prescribe rules not inconsistent with law or with the

rules prescribed by the State Board of Education, for

the government and discipline of the schools under

its jurisdiction (E.C. 35291). All pupils shall comply

with the regulations, pursue the required course of

study, and submit to the authority of the teacher of

the school. (E.C. 48908)

Extracurricular activities are considered a part of the

educational program and participants and spectators

carry responsibilities as representatives of their

schools and communities. All student conduct rules

apply to and are enforced at extracurricular events.

This publication has been prepared and distributed

for the purpose of informing all concerned persons of

district policy and the availability of rules pertaining

to student discipline. Said rules are available either

DRESS CODE

Paramount High School believes that students should

be provided with a quality education in a safe,

wholesome environment. In this regard, it is felt that

certain types of clothing and attire can cause

disruption of school activities. There are times when

students may want to wear articles of clothing

because they consider them fashionable or “in style”.

Unfortunately, some styles of dress have become

associated with gangs, tagging crews or may result in

students becoming targets of sexual harassment.

In order to assist parents and students in identifying

articles of clothing that are inappropriate for school

use and to prevent parents from unwittingly

purchasing clothing which may communicate an

unwanted or dangerous message, the following is a

list of banned items for all students male and female:

Pants which are extremely larger than one’s

waist size or excessively baggy shirts/jerseys.

Cut-off pants or baggy shorts which usually end

below the knee.

Alterations such as gathering of waist lines on

oversized pants or baggy shorts and pants that

have been cut and slit exposing an opening.

Military-type slip buckles with initials (often

correspond with gang affiliation.)

Pants worn below the waist (below the

hipbones). This is called “sagging”.

Clothing with an inappropriate message that

glamorizes illegal activities such as vandalism

and graffiti, promote violence, use of legal /

illegal drugs, and disrespect towards law

enforcement and authority.

Colors in attire representing gang identification

including, but not limited to sports jerseys.

Shoelaces wider than standard size and in a color

other than white or black.

Hairnets, doo-rags, or bandanas worn on the

head or hanging from pockets.

Gang graffiti, old English script, symbols,

messages, or gang names written or embroidered

on attire.

No headgear is permitted on the PHS campus,

including hoodies. Authorized headgear may

only be used during athletic-related activities.

Gang/Moniker identification and graffiti on

notebooks, book covers, backpacks, and other

personal belongings. Clothing which depicts or

suggests sexually related or obscene gestures,

pictures, or wording.

Dark glasses may not be worn in any classroom

without a written permit from a doctor.

Revealing attire that exposes midriff and/or

excessively low-cut shirts, short-shorts and

spandex material attire, and ‘lingerie look’

In order to guarantee all students in our school the

excellent learning climate that each student deserves, we

have developed a statement of student rules and

consequences if a student chooses to break a rule.

Responsibility for the consequences lies with the

student. All individuals are in charge of their own

actions and must be willing to accept the consequences

based on their choice of behavior. This statement is

only a guideline, and more or less severe disciplinary

steps may be taken if deemed appropriate.

Students with a full day truancy or over four period truancies in any period may be assigned to a four-hour Saturday School within 20 days of the un-cleared absences. Truants who fail to attend Saturday School as assigned may be reassigned and/or placed in In-House Suspension. Students who are repeat offenders may be placed on an SRT Attendance/Behavior Contract with their parents and the school district and may be cited for truancy.

Rule #19 STUDENTS MUST ARRIVE AT

Rule #20 GAMBLING/GAMING

(BANKING OR PERCENTAGE GAME WITH CARDS, DICE, OR A DEVICE FOR MONEY) ON SCHOOL CAMPUS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED BY STATE LAW. THIS IS A VIOLATION OF PENAL CODE 330.

1st Offense: Student may be suspended and

cited by school resource officer. Student will be placed on a behavior contract during post suspension conference.

2nd Offense: Student may be suspended, cited by

school resource officer and possible recommendation for alternative placement.

SEVERE CLAUSE At the discretion of the principal or designee, the severe clause will be enforced. The severe clause supersedes all consequences of all rules. Due to the severity of any infraction or combination of rules broken, a student shall be suspended, transferred, and/or recommended for expulsion.

ACTION

The Education Code specified violations, which may

result in suspension. In addition it is the school’s

obligation to refer violations of existing criminal or

civil laws to the appropriate authority. Some of the

offenses, which involve only school rules, may call

for disciplinary action other than suspension,

expulsion, or referral to law enforcement authorities.

DETENTION

Students may be detained for disciplinary or

other reasons up to one (1) hour after the

close of the maximum school day.

IN-HOUSE SUSPENSION

Students may be assigned to school-site

suspension depending on the severity and

nature of the violation and as determined by

the school administration.

EXPULSION

The removal from enrollment in all schools

of the district as ordered by governing

board. The board may order expulsion when

other means of correction have repeatedly

failed to result in acceptable conduct or if

the continued presence of the student causes

danger to the safety of others. Pupils may

be expelled only for those reasons for which

they also may be suspended. State law

provides for full due process and rights to

appeal any order of expulsion.

SEARCH AND SEIZURE

In order to maintain safe school

environments, students and their property

may be searched by school officials when

there is a reasonable suspicion that the

search will uncover items which violate the

law or the rules of the district. School

officials may enlist the assistance of law

enforcement (including search dogs)

whenever deemed necessary. The Board

believes that the use of metal detectors

offers a reasonable means to deter students

from bringing weapons to school and will be

utilized at various times throughout the

school year.

Directiva gobernante. La expulsión puede ser

ordenada por la Junta Directiva cuando otros

medios de corrección han fallado por completo

en mejorar el comportamiento o si la continua

presencia de ese alumno causa peligro a la

seguridad de otros. Los alumnos pueden ser
