3.16 Framing.

A DIP 20 and DIP 22 steel columns. The structure of the U-shaped block is a composite steel and concrete replication of the Classical form of the older building, containing what are rather small spans.

B DIP 20 steel column hidden in courtroom wall. C Steel beam encased in concrete supporting slab. The structure of the link

uses freestanding columns, longer-span elements, and a minimum of material to minimize the mass of this part of the building.

D The railings are solid on the three sides facing the exterior and open toward the courtyard.

E Glass-enclosed elevator. F Existing courthouse and courtyard. G Courtyard curtain wall (see figure 3.20)

3.17 Wall section.

A Brick masonry wall with stucco facing and copper flashing at base. B Double composite steel and concrete floor with filling. C Heating pipes in ceiling. These heat the entire surface of the ceiling,

which then radiates the heat into the space. D Dimmel 72 steel beam encased in concrete with cork insulation on inner

face, framing into column. E Steel T lintels to support masonry over opening. F Oak window frame with teak sash. Double windows are used to mini-

mize heat loss. G Oak floor on concrete composite slab with filling. H Steel column encased in concrete and faced with plaster. While not

exposed, the structure is described by the stucco facing. I Pedestal. This serves no functional purpose except to recall the pedestals

of the older building. J Granite base on concrete wall. This creates a base suggestive of but not

identical to the base of the older building.




3.19 Structure of link at upper floor.

A Double concrete slab with filling. Most of Asplund's slabs consist of two layers of concrete separated by a lighter filling. Since the top and bottom of the slab take most of the load, this creates a thicker slab while reducing its weight.

B Steel beams encased in concrete, ta-pered toward the edge to coincide with bending moments.

C Steel purlin framing into beam. While the major beams are exposed, the small ones are not.

D Steel beam at edge with insulation on exterior face.

E Steel column encased in concrete. As in the Bredenberg store, the concrete is carved away to reveal the steel profile, but here the concrete is much thinner.

F Steel-reinforced teak curtain wall. See figure 3.20.




3.20 Curtain wall details.

A 6-8 mm plate glass.

B Typical maple or oak mullion.

C Steel reinforcement with 2 mm cork wrapping to allow a smaller profile of mullion and thus maintain transparency.

D Exterior trim and glazing bead. Oak is not typically used on the exterior with a clear finish. This window has been rebuilt to accommodate double glazing.

E Anchor to tie window mullion to concrete.

F Masonry wall and plaster finish.

G Oak sill sloped to drain water from condensation.

H Oak floor on concrete slab with steel bulb T reinforcing.

I Window flashing to drain water away from the horizontal joint at the base.

J Waterproof membrane to intercept the water that penetrates the floor boards.

K Wood slat floor at balcony. The open joints allow water to drain.

3.23 Section of elevator cage door at ground floor.

A Sliding glass window at porter's off ice.

B 6-8 mm plate glass.

C 5.5 cm galvanized steel tube painted white. All structural members of the cage are of the some cross section, regardless of the very different structural loads.

D Nickel-plated glazing bead and frame.

E Door jamb of 5.5 cm tube.

F Elevator door frame of 5.5 cm tube.

G Track for sliding window.

H Horizontal 5.5 cm tube supporting counter.

I Ash-veneered wood panel.

J Wood counter with 8 mm nickelclad support rods.
