new way of experiencingmovies, and Gravity is theone to change that. I didntsay, the heavens haveopened and Jesus has ap-peared.

I keep using the word ex-perience because thats whatGravity is. At the end of theday, Gravity is a minimaliststory of survival and determi-nation but told with an inge-nious, methodical use of thelatest filmmaking techniques.

you can still enjoy the film asa thriller in 2D. But I believepart of the films conceit ofimmersing the audience in

space are the subtle sugges-

tions of distance and depth,making for a colder, moreclaustrophobic cosmos.

Then theres Bullockspowerful performance as ahuman being struggling tosurvive the elements. One ofmy favorite scenes is in themiddle part, when Dr. Ryanmanages to enter the Soyuzcapsulea moment of respitebefore Murphys Law strikesagain. Theres a shot of her

(seen in the trailer) floatingin a fetal position, nestled inthe womb of the Russianspace station.

Its because of that singleframe of Ryan in a fetal posi-tion that we may understand

what Cuarn ultimately is at-tempting to convey. Just asthe tubes in the spacecraft re-semble umbilical cords,Cuarns repeating motif oftethers seem to signify that

we humans should never let

go of this one object thatconnects us, binds us togeth-er even as we reach far outinto the heavensnot withropes or bridges or radio orFaceBook or smartphoneapps that keep us connected

with each other - but thismagnificent, wonderful, fer-tile and rare blue planet that

we all call our mother.Gravityis a humanizing
