The Present Subjunctive form
The endings:
AR VERBS IR/ER VERBS
Yo e a
Tú es as
Él, ella, usted e a
Nosotros emos amos
Ellos, ellas, ustedes en an
• We take the first person singular "Yo " form of the verb (we'll use Hablar):
1) Hablar ---> Hablo
2) Drop the "o"
3) ---> Habl-
4) Add the opposite ending: `e' (in other words, an ending we would expect to see on an Ir or Er verb)
5) ---> Hable
• If the "Yo" form is irregular, the subjunctive form will be irregular:
1) Traer ----> Yo traigo
2) Drop the "o" ---> Traig-
3) Add the opposite ending `a'
4) Traiga
Other "yo" irregulars:
Caer (Caigo)
Decir (digo)
Hacer (Hago)
Oír (Oigo)
Poner (Pongo)
Salir (Salgo)
Venir (Vengo)
There are six Spanish verbs with irregular present tense subjunctive forms. With Estar,
Ser and Dar, drop both the "O" and the "Y":
Verb Yo form Subjunctive
Estar Estoy Esté
Dar Doy Dé
Ir (very irregular) Voy Vaya
Saber Sé Sepa
Haber He Haya
Ser Soy Sea
• In addition, if there is a stem change in the Present Tense, there will be a stem change in all of the conjugations in the Subjunctive form with the exception of the Nosotros form of -Ar and -Er verbs. Only -Ir verbs continue to stem-change in the Preterite and they follow the same pattern as the stem-changers in the Preterite.

When not to use the Subjunctive
We DO NOT use subjunctive to express facts, beliefs, truth, certainties or the obvious.
Creo que... I believe/think (FOR A FACT) that...
No hay duda que... There is no doubt that...
Es obvio/ cierto/ verdad/ hecho que.... It's obvious, certain, true, a fact that...
Yo sé que...(tú sabes que...) I know (FOR A FACT) or You know (FOR A FACT) that..
We also do not use the subjunctive when discussing people or things we know exist:
There is a secretary who can speak Spanish. Hay una secretaria que habla español.
I'm looking for the guy who has the key. [I know there is such a guy-he exists.]
Busco al hombre que tiene la llave.
We use it with a fixed list of expressions that you’ll get given in lesson 1. Example: ojalá que, espero que, no creo que, no pienso que, es importante que, te recomiendo que, es recomendable que, te aconsejo que, me molesta que….
Remember NOT TO GENERALIZE saying that subjunctive is used to emotions, opinions, unreal things... you’ll go crazy. How can you tell that what is not real for you is not real for me??? Believe us, it is A LOT better if you just memorize the expressions that require it. ☺☺☺☺
#2 El pretérito perfecto del subjuntivo
The Present Perfect subjunctive is formed in the same way we form the present perfect in
the indicative. We need a conjugation of the verb Haber and a past participle. The only
difference is that we conjugate Haber in the present subjunctive!
Haber yo tú él, ella, usted nosotros ellos, ellas, ustedes
haya hayas haya hayamos hayan
But we still use the same past participles as we do for the regular present perfect:
Espero que ellos hayan llegado a tiempo. I hope that they arrived (have
arrived) on time.
Siento que el gato de Ana se haya muerto. I'm sorry that Ana's cat died.
Me alegro de que Eric haya ganado el
premio este año.
I'm glad that Eric won the prize this
year.
We use the present perfect subjunctive when we want to express a reaction to something that has (already) happened.
IRREGULARES:
#3 El pretérito imperfect del subjuntivo
There is only one set of endings in the imperfect subjunctive, regardless if the verb ends in -Ar ,-Ir or -Er.
Yo Tú Él, ella, usted Nosotros* Vosotros Ellos, ellas,
Uds.
ra ras ra 'ramos rais ran
* Note: the Nosotros form has an accent on the vowel that immediately precedes the "r" in "-ramos."
• Past Subjunctive always ends in "-RAN" in third person plural as opposed to the Preterite which ends in "-RON".
We form the past subjunctive by taking the third person plural (Ellos, ellas, ustedes) form of the preterite past tense, and then adding the appropriate Imperfect subjunctive ending.
For example:
1) Tener 2) Tuvieron (the Preterite 3rd person plural)
3) We drop the "-ron" ending: tuvie- 4) We add one of the appropriate "-ra/ -ras/ -ra/ -'ramos/ -rais/ -ran" endings
5) we'll use -ra for this example: Él tuviera
Examples of the Imperfect Subjunctive:
Yo Tú Él, ella, usted Nosotros Ellos, ellas,
Uds.
Hablar hablara hablaras hablara habláramos hablaran
Comer comiera comieras comiera comiéramos comieran
Vivir viviera vivieras viviera viviéramos vivieran
Once we determine that we need to use the Subjunctive Mood, we use the Past (Imperfect) Subjunctive in a dependent clause when the main clause is in the past [which can be in the Preterite, Imperfect or the Conditional.]
Past
Preterite Le recomendé que él bebiera cuatro vasos de agua cada día.
Imperfect Quería que él bebiera cuatro vasos de agua cada día.
Conditional Querría que él bebiera cuatro vasos de agua cada día.
Past Perfect Había querido que él bebiera cuatro vasos de agua cada día.
Remember that the word "que" introduces the dependent clause.
Also, we use the Present Subjunctive when the main clause is in the present:
Present
Present Quiero que él beba cuatro vasos de agua cada día
Present Perfect He recomendado que él beba cuatro vasos de agua cada día
Future Le voy a recomendar que él beba cuatro vasos de agua cada día
Future Le recomendaré que él beba cuatro vasos de agua cada día
The Imperfect Subjunctive refers to events or ideas that did not, cannot and will not
happen. The Present Subjunctive refers to things which MAY happen (likely or unlikely!)
AHORA EN ESPAÑOL
#1 El presente del subjuntivo
A. El uso del subjuntivo
El indicativo es el modo de la realidad. El subjuntivo es el modo de la irrealidad o de la realidad vista a través de las emociones o los juicios de valor de una persona.
En GENERAL, lo usamos después de:
- verbos de voluntad, orden y prohibición;
Ej.: Quiero que haga buen tiempo mañana.
Te manda que te pongas las botas.
Les prohibimos a los niños que salgan.
- oraciones que expresan un juicio de valor;
Ej.: Es una pena que llueva.
- verbos que expresan una reacción emotiva;
Ej.: Me alegro de que haga sol hoy.
- oraciones que expresan una obligación personal.
Ej.: Es preciso que lo llames.
Cuando el sujeto de los dos verbos es el mismo o es impersonal, se
usa el infinitivo en la subordinada.
Ej.: Quiero viajar a España.
Se prohibe fumar.
Es natural amar a sus hijos.
Hace falta practicar.
NOTA IMPORTANTE:
Radical + Radical + Radical +
-e
-es
-e
-emos
-éis
-en
-a
-as
-a
-amos
-áis
-an
-a
-as
-a
-amos
-áis
-an
A. Conjugación
imperfecto.
