Desde Pascua, nuestros evangelios han sido historias de las primeras apariciones de Jesús a sus discípulos y a algunas mujeres. La semana pasada tuvimos la historia de Jesús apareciendo a los apóstoles y eventualmente a Tomás en el aposento alto. La semana anterior a eso, Jesús apa-rece en su cuerpo resucitado a las mujeres que fueron a la tumba. Entonces, echamos un vistazo a los pasajes de las Escrituras que hemos tenido desde el domingo de Pascua, nos enfrentamos con el hecho de que muchos de los seguidores de Jesús fueron bastante lentos para comprender la fe de Pascua. Pocos de ellos reconocieron a Jesús de inmediato en su cuerpo resucitado, a pesar de que viajaron con él en la vida.

Hoy escuchamos de los dos hombres que se alejaban abatidos de Jerusalén hacia su ciudad natal de Emaús. Escuchamos en el Evangelio de hoy la historia de cómo Jesús los conoció en sus sueños rotos y lo reconocieron en el "partimiento del pan". Su emoción es la de dos personas que acaban de salir de la mejor película que hayan visto.

Lo que está claro es que estos dos discípulos al principio no reconocieron al Jesús resucita-do. Eran lentos para creer. Nuestro evangelio nos dice que estaban sorprendidos y aterrorizados.

¿Por qué no podían todas estas personas, estos amados "discípulos" de Jesús reconocerlo después de la resurrección? ¿Por qué tardaron en abrazar la fe de Pascua? ¿Qué estaban esperan-do?

Bueno, no podemos ser demasiado duros con ellos, ¿verdad? Después de todo, a veces so-mos lentos para abrazar la fe de Pascua. En medio de todas las enfermedades y muertes entre fa-miliares, amigos y otros del Coronavirus, ¿realmente creemos en la resurrección? Quiero decir, creemos, tenemos fe, pero, ¿Realmente CREEMOS? ¿Por qué no lo reconocieron? ¿Cómo se veía el Señor resucitado? ¿Podría haberse visto tan diferente de lo que era antes? ¿Qué tan alto era él? ¿Cuantos años tenía? ¿Se veía judío? ¿Es el Señor resucitado un judío? ¿Parecía un mu-sulmán, un hispano, una persona sin hogar en la calle? ¿Se parece a nuestra madre, padre, her-mano o hermana con quien acabamos de discutir? O, ¿de alguna manera él trasciende todas las barreras así? ¿Él de alguna manera trasciende todas las barreras que hemos hecho para ver a Cristo resucitado en todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas? Creo que en Cristo resucitado, todas las divisiones cesan. No podemos ni debemos "encajonar" al Cristo resucitado con nuestras cate-gorías humanas. ¿El Señor resucitado parece un extraño? ¿Podría el Señor resucitado parecer personas que están subiendo 12 escalones? ¿Como una persona LGBTQ? ¿Como los pobres? ¿Como alguien que se está muriendo? Como una mujer? ¿Como cada uno de nosotros en la pa-rroquia de San Simón Stock-San José? ¡Por supuesto!

Mi punto es este: morir para la división y elevarse a la unión: ¡este es el secreto para ver al Señor Jesús! Este es el secreto de la Pascua. Tenemos el desafío de ver a Jesús partiendo el pan: la Eucaristía, en los pobres, en todas las personas. Si no podemos hacer esto, no podremos ver al Señor Resucitado en nuestro mundo.

Podemos encontrar todo esto demasiado desafiante y difícil de aceptar. Sin embargo, Jesús nunca dijo que seguirlo sería fácil! Todos debemos abrir los ojos y reconocer que Jesús se junta-ba con los marginados, los pecadores y los marginados de su sociedad.

¡Decimos aleluya! ¡Él ha resucitado! ¡Él está vivo! Pero, ¿lo reconocemos al partir el pan, en nuestro mundo de hoy, en el otro? El desafío continúa. Necesitamos seguir con el progra-ma y abrir nuestros ojos a la Fe de Pascua.

Since Easter, our gospels have been stories of Jesus’ early appearances to his disciples and a few women. Last week we had the story of Jesus appearing to the apostles and eventually Thomas in the upper room. The week before that, Jesus appears in his risen body to the women who went to the tomb. So, we take a look at the scripture passages we have had since Easter Sun-day, we are confronted with the fact that many of the followers of Jesus were quite slow to grasp the Easter faith. Few of them recognized Jesus right away in his risen body - even though they travelled with him in life.

Today we hear of the two men walking dejectedly away from Jerusalem toward their home town of Emmaus. We hear in today’s Gospel the story of how Jesus met them in their broken dreams and they recognized him in the “breaking of bread”. Their excitement is that of two per-sons who have just come out of the best movie they had ever seen.

What is clear is that these two disciples (probably Peter and John) did not at first recognize the risen Jesus. They were slow to believe. Our gospel tells us that they were startled and terri-fied.

Why couldn't all these people, these beloved "disciples" of Jesus recognize him after the resurrection? Why were they slow to embrace the Easter faith? What were they expecting?

Well, we can't be too hard on them, can we? After all, we are slow at times to embrace the Easter faith. In the midst of all the sickness and death among family, friends and others from the Coronavirus do we really believe in the resurrection? I mean, we believe, we have faith, but, do we really BELIEVE?

Why didn't they recognize him? What did the Risen Lord look like? Could he have looked that much different than he did before? How tall was he? How old was He? Did he look Jewish? Is the Risen Lord a Jew? Did he look like a Muslim, a Hispanic, a homeless person on the street? Does he look like our mother, father, brother or sister that we just had an argument with? Or, does he somehow transcend all barriers like that? Does he somehow transcend all the barriers we have made to see the Risen Christ in all our brothers and sisters?

I think that in the Risen Christ, all divisions do cease. We cannot and should not "box in" the Risen Christ with our human categories. Does the Risen Lord look like a stranger? Could the Risen Lord look like people who are climbing 12 steps? Like a LGBTQ person? Like the poor? Like the dying? Like a woman? Like each of us in St Simon Stock-St Joseph parish? Of course!

My point is this - To die to division and rise to union - this is the secret to seeing the Lord Jesus! This is the secret of Easter. We are challenged to see Jesus in the breaking of the bread - the Eucharist, in the poor, in all people. If we can't do this, we will not be able to see the Risen Lord in our world.

We may find all this too challenging and difficult to accept. However Jesus never said fol-lowing him would be easy. All of us need to open our eyes and recognize that Jesus hung out with the outcasts, the sinners and those who were marginalized in his society.

We say Alleluia! He is Risen! He is alive! But, do we recognize him in the breaking of the bread, in our world today, in each other? The challenge goes on. We need to get with the pro-gram and open our eyes to the Easter Faith.
