Whenwereflectabout the templeofZeusatOlympia, it isplain tosee
some really intriguing thingsand it couldbe interesting to stopmore than a
momenttothinkaboutthem.ThebuildingerectedintheElishadmanythings
in commonwith theAthenian Parthenon. Clearly, the link between both of
themwas the sculptor and director of theworks of theAthenssAcropolis,
madeunderPericles,Phidias.
Before the Persians victory on, around the 479 b.C. the Athenians were
working on building a temple where it will be stay, some years later, the
Parthenon.ThebuildingwasmadeaccordingtothepreceptsoftheDoricorder
measuring23.11meterswideby66.88meters long.Thesemeasureswouldbe
considered later the canon of the Doric order, when the temple of Zeus at
Olympiawere built andwhichmeasureswere 27.68meterswide by 64, 12
meterslong.
The design of the Parthenon, held by the architects Ictinus and Callicrates,
forced them to preserve the remains of ancient temple, destroyed by the
Persians,andthusforcedthenewbuildingmeasures.ThecurrentParthenonis

Inside both buildings, Zeus temple and The Parthenon were staying both

b.C.according to thebeliefofmanyauthors,24yearsago.Whyare there two
similar temples, with similar characteristics and Elean people need to ask
Phidias tomake the sculpture inOlympia justwhenhehad just finished the
Athenian one? In contrast, Athenian sculpture was made on par with the
temple,between447b.C.and432b.C.
The Parthenon included inside a Chryselephantine sculpture of similar
dimensions to theOlympianZeus:alsomeasured twelve feethighandhada

We can findmore in common between the two buildings. For example, the
columns of the Acropolis buildingmeasured 10.4meters high, just like the
Olympictemple.Itmayseemlogicalthatifwhatitisinsidethebuildinghasthe
same measure; both temples had the same measure. The problem is that
tradition says that the Elis templewas built in 456 b.C., 9 years before the
beginning of the construction of theAthenian building, but the sculpture of
Zeuswasdoneaftercompletingall thesculpturesof theParthenon in the432

coincidence and that theElean rulers calledPhidias todevelop the image of
Zeus,impressedbytheAthenaParthenossculpture.
Based the datawe have, that try to dealwith distance the descriptions and

would be time to consider thatwe have inherited ideas of thosewho have

without having too many times throughout its history with dark areas, in
general,we have quitedetailed information of themonumental buildings of

Continuingthisthought,fortheGreekpeopleZeusofOlympiawasoneofthe

because of both sculptures were made by the same author, and they look
similar.
Moreover,whywasconservedneithertheParthenonnortheTempleofZeus?

Toanswerthesequestions,firstlywehavestudiedthehistoriographical

the temple of Zeuswasmore important that the Parthenon for the ancient
Greekpeople. Itwasearlier in time, itwasconsidered thecanonofDoricart,
althoughitsmeasureswereverysimilartothoseofthetempleofAthensandits
sculpture, the image of Zeus, was one of the seven wonders of antiquity,
despite its similarity with the Athena. Pausanias describes a third

We therefore need to develop scenarios and try to prove them or at least
demonstratetheirability.
According to this idea our model proposes a completely different light.
Lighting up and down, thin and sparse, but it is enough to highlight the
brillianceofgoldandivory.
From here we try to propose the end of a possible history, derived from
hypotheses to the extent possible,we have attempted to realize previously,
ancientsourcesandassumptionswecannotyetdetermine, in theprofessional
lifeofPhidias.
Pausanias tells us that on the way to the city of Pelene there is a temple
dedicated toAthena, whichwas treasured an imageof thegoddessmade of

ItseemsreasonablethatPhidiashaddonebeforecrisoelephantinessculptures.
It is customary that at the time of his engagement to the greatworks had

Acropolis,probablybeforethedestructionoftheoldParthenon.Bothteachers
as one of the other were very active in Athens before thewar against the
Persians.
Phidias began to abandon the formalities of the archaic style and began to
explorevisualforms.
Between 480 and 479 Athens was sacked and burned by the Persians. Its
citizens took refuge in the islandswhere they fought to win the battles of
SalamisandPlataea. It is logical to think thatat this timePhidiashad tobea

soldiers.Furthermore it isclear thatheearned the respectandaffection from

However inAthens, although theconditionswere thesame, and the talentof
Phidias remained high, yet the slight sheen that provided the roof was
projected on the helmet of Athena, leaving his face, his appearance, in the
darkness. Kingdom that the greatest strength of the Athena Promachos

InOlympia itseems that theZeussculpturewascoatedofgold,however the
latestsourcessaythat itwas justamarblestatue,sowecanconcludethatthe
gold had been removed before the sculpture had been carried to
Constantinople. It seems that other people near Pericleswere accusedwith
similararguments.Also thephilosopherAnaxagoraswasaccusedof impiety,
andcondemnedtoexile.
However we can remember that the characteristics of the Olympic temple
emphasized the divinity of the Zeus image, asHomer described it.Not the
samethinghappenedinthetempleofAthens,withtheimageoftheAthenian

disappointed, especially if they had traveled to the Elis and had seen the

So,thePericlessplantoplacetheemblemoftheGreekdivinityinthecentral

1.1 FUENTES HISTRICAS

Samotracia y Ddimo Calcntero (s. I a.C.).

Y no

Morea frente a esas islas.
all.

cuyo final deca as:

entrante mi viaje a Alemania, particularmente a Berln, aunque ciertamente

consiguiente solamente tocar Sajonia.
