En los pueblos andinos, el culto a los muertos aglutina las identidades de sangre, territorial y religiosa. Los tiempos de la muerte y la vida interactúan y se soportan mutuamente.
El 31 de octubre es el día de las almas de los niños (que son los que volverán más pronto), el 1º de noviembre es el día de los vivos y el 02 de noviembre el día de los difuntos mayores. En el día de los muertos las gentes ofrendan comidas a sus antepasados y el encuentro con ellos se representa mediante la preparación de comidas que se disponen sobre un tapete negro (representando obviamente el cielo nocturno). En ruphaymita (la época caliente del año: primavera y verano austral) los pueblos transitan del hambre a la abundancia, de la siembra a la cosecha, con la inestimable participación de los antepasados.
La fiesta de las t’anta wawas (criaturas de pan) y t’anta achachis (antepasados de pan) empieza con la preparación de la masa de harina.
