We want to invite you to develop a business oriented tomanufacturing food products with a larger shelf life toparticipate in the food recuperation market inColombia.

One third of food production destined to humanconsumption (approximately 1.300 million tons) areeither lost or wasted around the world every year. InLatin America this waste means 100 million tons. Indeveloping countries, these take place due toinfrastructure instability, low technological levels, andlack of investment in food production systems.

Food waste and loss situations become paradoxicalwhen compared against the amount of people wholack safe access to sufficient quantity of safe andnutritious food for normal growth and developmentand an active and healthy life, that is to say they live infood insecurity.

40.8% of the population in Colombia lives in foodinsecurity. In the city of Medellin, this situation is lived in21.6% of homes.

What Business and technological solutionswill allow to develop longer shelf lifeproducts, generate impact on foodsecurity and reduce food waste?

'Buen Provecho' is launched under the public-privatepartnership Alianza Pioneros de la Innovacin Socialthat includes the National Agency for OvercomingExtreme Poverty (ANSPE), ten private enterprises in thecountry, the Multilateral Investment Fund and threefoundations, whose efforts are focused on marketincentives at the base of the pyramid.

This opportunity have been identied by theArchdiocesan Food Bank Foundation of Medellin, anon-prot social institution that helps beginning withthe improvement of food security and nutritional well-being of vulnerable persons served by social entities ofMedellin and the metropolitan area.

It carries out its work recovering, collecting, anddistributing food and other goods collected through itsextensive network of associates, which includes largeand small food producing companies, large areas offood sales, food distribution centers in the city, andsmall agricultural producers in the region.

'Buen Provecho' is open to companies,entrepreneurs, and technological centers withtechnological and business solutions that will enablefruits and vegetables in advanced state of maturation,to be transformed into nutritional foods, in additionto developing packaging technologies thatguarantee product safety and long life.
