SEEK VIRTUE

In today’s first reading, Amos condemns a self-

absorbed people and their morally corrupt behavior

and attitudes, which he warns will bring devastation.

In the Gospel, the wealthy man is not given a name; he

is simply the epitome of greed and irresponsibility. His

lack of caring has created a gulf between him and the

beggar Lazarus that not even Abraham can bridge.

In his letter to Timothy, a young bishop in the small

Resurrection community of Ephesus, Paul exhorts this

leader to seek virtues such as integrity, faith, and

steadfastness with great gentleness. Paul also asks

Timothy to keep in mind the future life with God who

“dwells in unapproachable light.” This is the blessed-

ness of all those who, like Lazarus, were once poor but

who are now rich.

PRACTICAR LA VIRTUD

En la primera lectura de hoy, Amós condena la cor-

rupta moralidad en el comportamiento y la actitud de

un pueblo que no se preocupa sino por su bienestar y

les previene que les traerá devastación. En el Evan-

gelio, el hombre rico ni siquiera tiene un nombre, es

simplemente la personificación de la avaricia y la irre-

sponsabilidad. Su falta de caridad ha creado un abismo

entre él y el mendigo Lázaro que ni Abraham puede

cerrar.

En su carta a Timoteo, un joven obispo en la peque-

ña comunidad formada después de la Resurrección en

Éfeso, Pablo exhorta a este dirigente a practicar vir-

tudes como integridad, fe y constancia con gran bon-

dad. Pablo también pide a Timoteo que conserve en su

mente la vida futura con Dios que “vive en la luz inac-

cesible”. Esta es la bienaventuranza de todos aquellos

que, como Lázaro, fueron una vez pobres pero ahora

son ricos.

First Friday Eucharistic Adoration

On the First Friday of every month, the Blessed Sac-rament is placed on the altar after the 8:30 a.m. Mass and remains exposed for adoration throughout the day. There will be Benediction at 3:00 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 4th, is the next First Friday. We invite everyone to come and spend some time be-fore the Lord and praise Him. You can sign up in advance or just drop by on Friday. Come, everyone, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

今天的比喻中，拉匝祿與富翁之間生活的貧富對比，以及

富人對於窮人漠不關心的態度，不只在耶穌時代如此，在

當今的時代，也依舊尖銳地存留著。耶穌先知性地在祂的

時代中，強烈地指斥了這種現象。我們所讀的比喻，不正

嚴厲地警告毫不關懷窮人的富人嗎？今天教會如果要忠於

基督的福音，必須透過這個比喻，首先反省自身的生活。

一般來說，四部福音中的路加福音，特別表現出耶穌對貧

窮人的關懷，並毫無保留地嚴正指出富人的責任。耶穌清

楚聲明自己的使命是向貧窮人傳報喜訊，祂直截了當地

說：「你們貧窮的人是有福的，因為天主的國是你們

的」；祂讚揚那個悔改的稅吏匝凱，把一半的財物施捨給

窮人。另一方面，路加福音中，耶穌乾脆地說：「你們富

有的人是有禍的，因為你們已經獲得了安慰」；對那個不

願跟隨祂的富有首領，耶穌說：「那些有錢財的人，進入

天主的國是多麼難啊！駱駝穿過針孔，比富有的人進入天

主的國還容易。」而我們今天所聽到的比喻中，耶穌更以

永遠的喪亡，警告那些只知自己享受，不願關懷受苦窮人

的富翁。

聆聽了以上所有的言辭之後，有兩點值得注意。首先，耶

穌為了表示站在窮人的一邊，祂自己甘心先成為貧窮的

人：「狐狸有穴，天上的飛鳥有巢，但是人子卻沒有枕頭

的地方。」祂要求自己的弟子捨棄一切所有，跟隨祂。其

次，祂的關懷窮人，警告富人，並非出於一種單純的同情

心，而是表彰了天主的旨意。耶穌所認識的天父，在祂賜

與人類種種恩惠之中，必定含有合乎人性尊嚴的物質生

活，因此活得不合乎人性的貧窮，基本上違反了天主的旨

意。而耶穌的使命，便是報告天國來臨，實現天父要在人
