Notebook Computers.

1.3.2 Keyboard Features

Th e Extensa 660 Series Notebooks con tain a bu ilt-in 8 6/ 87-key keyboard (Figu re 1-3

compa tible with th e IBM enh an ced 101/ 102-key keyboard. The keyboard contains 12

program ma ble fu nct ion keys, a n embedded nu meric keypad (Figure 1-4) and dedicated

cont rol keys (h ot keys).

1.3.3 Software Features

As a s tan dar d featu re, the Extensa 660 notebooks a re factory loaded with du al load

(Windows 95 or Windows for Workgroups) software to allow the user to configure the

notebooks operating system environment as summarized in Table 1-2.

Drivers, PC-Card Bus Socket Services and Card Services Device Drivers, etc.

1.4 Notebook BatteriesThe notebook computer can use one of three types of batteries:

Primary Battery - Nickel-Metal-Hydride type

Primary Battery - Lithium-Ion type (option) Seconda ry Batter y - Lithium -Ion type (option)

listed in Table 1-5.

1.4.1 Determining Battery Charge Level

As s hown in Figu re 1-8, th e bat ter ies u sed in th e Extensa 660 ha ve a series of lighted

ind icators th at sh ow the am oun t of char ge remaining in th e bat tery (vis ible when the

Charge Display button is pressed).

2.3.1 Installing Main Memory Expansion (Optional)

Main m emory on the 66 0 Series Notebooks ca n b e expan ded u sing an E DO Small

16 MB, 32 MB, and 64 MB sizes an d insta ll in t he expa n sion mem ory slot on th e System

Board accessed th rough the Memory Expan sion Door on th e bot tom of the notebook.

The insta llation process consists of th e followin g steps :

Caution: The EDO soDIMM module option contains components that aresensitive to static electricity. When handling the module and the internalparts of the computer, protect against static electricity by using wrist or

ankle grounding straps and grounded working mats. When moving orstoring items, use the anti-static bags supplied with the items.

th e mem ory modu le board into th e conn ector us ing a rocking motion to fu lly

ins ert the m odule. Push downward on each s ide of the m emory modu le un t il

it sn aps in p lace.

7. Rein sta ll the Expa ns ion Memory Access Cover u sing th e screw rem oved inStep 4.

8. Replace the batteries and AC adapter.

9. Power u p th e n otebook. If all of th e insta lled m emory is n ot recogn ized, tryresea ting the soDIMM modu le an d reb ooting.

2. Select th e Restart the Computer in MS-DOS mode.

computer is in the 5V Suspend mode.

The computer enters the 5V Suspend mode when you press the 5V

Setup is enabled and expires, or the display is closed.

Standby Mode Indicator

Lights when the computer is in the Standby mode.

3.4 Using a CD-ROM DriveAn option al CD-ROM drive in sta lled in th e modu lar ba y of th e compu ter pr ovides fast

access to text , program s, graph ics , sou nd , an ima t ion a nd video on a s tan dar d CD. (With

an optional MPEG PC Card installed, you can play back approximately 75 minutes of

MPEG1-compressed, full-motion video from a CD.)

3.4.1 Auto Speed/Max Speed Settings

The CD-ROM drive ha s a switch th at selects eith er Auto-Speed or Max-Speed operation.At Max Speed s ett ing, som e CDs vibra te an d cau se errors . In th e Au to-Speed sett ing,

th e drive can ad ju st th e speed of th e CD-ROM for optimu m r eading. Th e switch is

access ible when th e CD-ROM disc tray is extended.

3.4.2 Inserting a CD into the Drive1. Press th e eject bu tton on th e fron t of th e CD-ROM drive to eject th e disc tra y.

2. Slide ou t th e disc tray.

3. Place th e CD, lab el side up , in th e depress ion on th e disc tray.

4. Slide th e disc tra y in to th e drive.

3.4.3 Handling CDs

Follow thes e guidelines to avoid d am agin g your CDs:

When rem ovin g a CD from its p rotective case or loading a CD into a drive, h oldthe CD by i ts central h ole an d ou ter edge. Never touch the d ata su rface (non -

label side).

To protect the CD agains t scratch es an d dir t when n ot in u se, keep the CD inits protective ca se.

Clean a CD with a clean , dry, l int -free cloth . Always wipe from th e cen ter to th eedge. Dont wipe the CD in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.

3.5 Built-in Sound SystemThe Extens a 6 60 Series Notebook comes with an inter na l microphone a nd s tereo

playback with 16.7 million colors, MPEG-1 au dio layers I an d II, is MPC3 com plian t

3.7 Battery Saving TipsThere ar e a n u mber of act ions you can take to redu ce the rate at wh ich you r compu ter

depletes the ba ttery. By tak ing some or all of th ese actions, you can su bst an tially

increas e th e t ime you ca n operate on ba t tery power before recharging th e ba t tery:

Reducing screen brightness Although the screen controller uses newtechn ology to in creas e brightn ess with out increa sing ener gy consu mp tion, th e

screen is st i ll th e lar gest single consu m er of th e batt ery ch arge. Redu cin g th e

bright n ess to the lowest a cceptab le level incr eas es b att ery life. To redu ce th e

brightn ess , press Fn+.

Caching the ha rd disk By caching the ha rd disk, you can redu ce the lengthof t ime th e ha rd disk is rotat ing an d u sing energy. Both Windows 95 an d

Wind ows for Workgroup s u se a disk-cach in g program by defau lt . As long as

you ha ve not disabled th ese program s, you can take a dvan tage of the ba t tery

savings.

Inactivity t imeouts turn off devices in the computer when you are not using them.

Lowering the ina ctivity t imeou ts s h ortens th e period of t ime th e compu ter waits before

3.7.2 Suspending Operation While IdleAlth ough th e comp u ter goes into Su sp end mode a u toma tically after a d efined period of

logic to process software instr u ctions (BIOS, DOS, Wind ows, an d ap plications). The

main system BIOS and the VGA BIOS. The Flash ROM contains "Boot Block" logic

th at allows download ing new versions of BIOS with out dest royin g the Boot Load ar ea

4.2.7 Hard Disk Drive Subsystem

and user fi les.

The n otebook is equipped with a h igh-capa city har d disk drive. Th e ha rd d isk d rive also

features built-in power conservation features configured from the standard CMOS

Setu p Routine. An Au toma tic Power Down mode ca n b e selected which p owers d own

th e dr ive m otor du ring per iods of ina ctivity. An ad dition al level of power con ser vation

ma y also be selected which powers down th e motor plus all control circu its.

The h ar d d isk drives a re factory form att ed a s a single drive (Drive C:) an d a re pr eloaded

with installation versions of Windows 95 or Windows for Workgroups (in dual load

versions, th e us er selects the opera ting system du ring software inst allation).

4.2.7.1 Hard Disk Drive Power Management

Both th e inter na l hard disk d rive an d th e ha rd disk drive ins tal led in the m edia ba y

implement p ower savings featu res . From th e CMOS setup rout ine, an au tomatic

power down m ode can be selected which en ab les th e drive to tur n off its m otor after a

specified period of inactivity. Additional Sleep modes can direct additional power

sa vin gs du ring in active periods b y powering down th e contr ol circu itry.

4.2.8 Floppy Disk Drive Subsystem

The Exten sa 660 is equ ipped with a 3 .5-inch floppy disk d rive in th e media ba y thatcan read / write sta n da rd 3 .5-in ch d isks (eith er1.44 MB or 2 MB capa city). The d rive

can also read a 720 KB disk (for int erch an ge of da ta with other com pu ters).

The d ata tra ns fer ra te for th e floppy disk dr ive is 5 00 Kbits p er secon d for h igh-

density disks and 250 Kbits per second for double-density disks.

5.1 IntroductionTh is section p rovides an overview of th e fau lt isolation p roces s, pr ovides gu idelines for

isolat ing 660 S eries compu ter m alfu nct ions to replaceable su bas semb lies a nd

provides instructions for executing diagnostics and interpreting error messages.

5.2 Overview of Fault Isolation ProcessTh e fau lt isolation p rocess (su mm arized in Figure 5-1) con sists of th e followin g steps :

Checking the Notebook power system (in clu ding battery pa cks a nd AC ada pterconn ections ) - refer to Paragra ph 5.4.

Checking Switch sett ings (ensuring Power is On ) Pressingth e Shift key to ens u re th at Notebook is not in Suspend mode

Verifyin g if comp u ter is con figu red to b oot from t h e A: Drive or C: Drive.

Checking LCD brightn ess adjus tmen t (press Fn-Up Arrow keys to increasebrightness)

5.3 Troubleshooting ProceduresTh e bu ilt-in self test p rogram an d th e disk res iden t diagnostics program (PC-Doctor)

ar e u seful tools in comp u ter trou bleshootin g. However, if th e compu ter h as a p ower,

keyboard or display problem, you m u st first s olve this problem before ru n ning

diagnost ics . If the compu ter powers u p a nd displays m essages on the LCD or emits a

series of beeps, skip to Paragraph 5.3.3 for further instructions.

5.3.1 Troubleshooting a Power Supply Problem

If th e compu ter does n ot power u p when th e Power Switch is s et to the ON posit ion ,

you mos t l ikely ha ve a m alfu nction in th e power su bs ystem (loss of power a t th e AC

outlet , fau lty AC ada pter, disch arged Bat tery Packs, or fau lty Power Su pply on th e

Main Board). With a power problem, a ll LEDs ar e extingu ish ed, th e LCD screen is

blan k, the system does not respon d when th e su spen d switch is pressed several t imes

consecu tively and n o drive activity can b e hea rd. The compu ter is un ab le to load

software and displays no visible signs of activity. To fault isolate a power problem,

ch eck th e followin g:

AC ada pter an d Bat tery - Plu g in the AC ada pter an d dou ble-check a llconnect ions on the ada pter and compu ter . Ensu re that th e NotebookPowerswitch is set to the On p osit ion an d th at th e system is not in Suspend or Sleepmode.

Meas u re th e voltage at th e AC outlet or plug in a kn own good a pplian ce (e.g.,a lamp) to verify that voltage is present. If the voltage is ok, try replacing the

AC adapter.

Check to see that the ba t tery packs are ins tal led correct ly and th at th e bat terycha rge ind icators on the front of the b at tery packs ind icate th e bat ter ies are

cha rged (try us ing a n ew battery pack if ba tteries are disch ar ged).

If th e AC outlet voltage, AC ada pter, a n d ba ttery packs test n orma l bu t th ecompu ter will not power u p, try disconn ecting th e display cab le from th e bas e

(refer to Section 6 for disas sem bly in stru ction s) to see if a sh ort in th e display

assembly has occurred.

If the d isplay assem bly appears to be n ormal , replace th e Bot tom Board asdescribed in Sect ion 6 an d retes t s ystem.

5.3.2 Troubleshooting a Display Problem

If the LCD remains blank when you tu rn on the compu ter, an d the s ta tu s indicators

light, check the following controls on the display:

LCD sus pend mode - Press Shift to t erminate Sus pend mode.

Brigh tn ess set too low - Press Fn-Up Arrow keys to increas e screen b rightn ess

Notebook Set for External Monitor - Press Fn-F12 to switch to th e intern alscreen.
