R E F L E X I Ó N

Realmente no vive.

NATIONAL VOCATION Awareness Week

November 3-9, 2019

The Family is the Seedbed for Vocations

Excerpts from Familiaris Consortio by Pope St. John Paul II

Christian couples therefore have the right to expect from celibate persons a good example and a witness of fidelity to their vocation until death. Jus as fidelity at times becomes difficult for married people and requires sacrifice, mortification and self-denial, the same can happen to celibate persons, and their fidelity, even in the trials that may occur, should strengthen the fidelity of married couples.

God is love and in Himself He lives a mystery of per-sonal loving communion. Creating the human race in His own image and continually keeping it in being, God inscribed in the humanity of man and woman the voca-tion, and thus the capacity and responsibility, of love and communion. Love is therefore the fundamental and innate vocation of every human being.

Christian revelation recognizes two specific ways of realizing the vocation of the human person in its entire-ty, to love: marriage and virginity or celibacy. Either one is, in its own proper form, and actuation of the most profound truth of man, of his being “created in the im-age of God.”

The task of giving education is rooted in the primary vocation of married couples to participate in God’s cre-ative activity: by begetting in love and for love a new person who has within himself or herself the vocation to growth and development, parents by that very fact take on the task of helping that person effectively to live a fully human life.

The family must educate the children for life in such a way that each one may fully perform his or her role ac-cording to the vocation received from God. Indeed, the family that is open to transcendent values, that serves its brothers and sisters, with joy, that fulfills its duties with generous fidelity, and is aware of its daily sharing in the mystery of the glorious Cross of Christ, becomes the primary and most excellent seed-bed of vocations to a life of consecration to the Kingdom of God.

Christian families offer a special contribution to the missionary cause of the Church by fostering missionary vocations among their children, and by training them from childhood to recognize God’s love for all people.

Also necessary, especially for Christians, is solid spir-itual and catechetical formation that will show marriage is a true vocation and mission, without excluding the possibility of the total gift of self to God in the vocation to the priestly or religious life.

Are you looking for something more in your life?

Consider attending a Cursillo Weekend.

Cursillo is a recognized movement in the Catholic Church, having received canonical recognition by the Holy See. The Weekend begins on Thursday evening and ends on Sunday evening. During these three days, a small course (Cursillo) is given on the fundamental aspects of Christianity and the Christian way of life. This ‘course’ is not of an academic nature. It is composed of real-life expe-riences, given mostly by lay-persons, which be-come the basis for small group discussions. Inter-mingled with these testimonies and discussions are songs, laughter, breaks and moments of pray-er. The atmosphere is one of friendship, warmth, and respect.

R E F L E C T I O N

Christians have a particular vision of the con-cept of justice, thanks to our Savior. Jesus opened the gate of heaven for us through his death on the cross. Justice comes from him alone. That was the great light Saint Paul received to share that truth. No one has a right to pride, if we are all in the same situation in need of redemption. We are all sinners and we all need the grace of God—his free gift—in order to be justified. Today’s parable is addressed to those who are convinced of their own righteousness. Self-sufficiency is a kind of blindness and deafness that closes people up in their own securities and hin-ders them from knowing God. It is like an idolatry that does not even recognize that they have radi-cally rejected God. The self-righteous feels above others, but the truth is that he lives in the most ab-solute solitude and isolation. He feels so good, so important, and so perfect, that he does not need relationships with others, let alone with God. That person doesn’t really live. Saint Teresa of Jesus said that humility is truth. This truth teaches us to see and love ourselves as God sees and loves us, that is, just as we are. It teaches us not to compare ourselves to others, to avoid jealousy, to recognize our limitations and failings without trying to mask them, and also to recognize our qualities and capacities. It helps us to recognize the situations in which we need to live and to accept them. It encourages us to be happy that others have qualities we lack, so that, together, we can build a great thing. We can ask for this and believe it will be given to us. Of course, we Catholics believe that once we have received this precious gift, we can and should build on it, in other words, we can extend this great mercy we have received to others. We always will know it is a gift without which, what-ever we build would not have any value. If by faith we believe we have received the mercy of a loving God, why deny it to others? Mercy is al-ways more generous, wider, more beautiful, and more similar to God than the so-called justice of the law. The justice of God is called mercy.

This reflection was taken from Nuestra Parroquia.
