1903: El amanecer de la aviacin1903: Dawn of aviation

La humanidad haba anheladodesde siempre poseer la

capacidad de volar. Muchos lo

haban intentado y algunos,como Otto Lilienthal, habanpagado con su vida el empeo.

Estamos en el ao 1903, en lasdunas de Kitty Hawk, en la

costa de Carolina del Norte,Estados Unidos, lugar de

suave terreno de arena y brisasconstantes. Dos fabricantes de bicicletas de Dayton, Ohio, los hermanos

Wilbur y Orville Wright, llevan tres aos realizando pruebas de vuelo con cometas yplaneadores construidos por ellos mismos, y probablemente saben ya ms que nadie

sobre la desconocida ciencia de la aerodinmica. Cuentan con su propio tnel de

viento donde prueban los perfiles de las alas. Tienen la acertada idea de dotar alavin de un elevador delantero, evitando as que el aparato entre bruscamente enprdida con consecuencias desastrosas.

Sus planeadores, de una ligereza y solidez extraordinarias, fruto de su experienciaen la fabricacin de bicicletas, realizan vuelos cada vez ms largos, algunos de

cerca de doscientos metros. Pero tienen que conseguir que el avin se eleve por suspropios medios, se sostenga en el aire y sea controlado por su piloto. Como no lessirve ningn motor de los fabricados hasta entonces, deciden fabricar ellos mismosuno, de cuatro cilindros y 63 kilos de peso, que produce algo ms de 12 CV, unarelacin peso-potencia bastante buena para la poca. Unas cadenas de bicicleta

transmiten la energa a dos hlices que giran en sentidos opuestospara neutralizar el par motor. Otro gran acierto.

Al nuevo aeroplano lo llamaron Flyer, el volador,construido en madera de abeto de Noruega, tela y

cables, pesaba 274 kilos sin contar el piloto. El 17 dediciembre es el da elegido. Era una maana fra y lalluvia haba dejado pequeos charcos de agua en las

dunas, que se haban recubierto de una ligera capade hielo. Soplaba viento del norte, de 30 a 40 km/h.

Como siempre, los hermanos lanzaron una moneda alaire para decidir a quin le tocaba volar esa vez.

Orville, el afortunado, ocup el puesto de pilotaje y arranc el motor. Eran las 10.35de la maana. Liber el cable de sujecin y la aeronave comenz a desplazarse

lentamente hacia delante, contra un viento de 43 km/h. Tras una carrera de unos 12metros, el avin despeg, subi a 3 metros, baj, volvi a subir y finalmente toctierra a poco ms de 30 metros del final del carril de despegue. El vuelo dur 12segundos. Lo haban conseguido. Fueron los primeros y sus nombres quedaban

inscritos en el libro de oro de los avances de la humanidad.

Mankind has longed to have the ability to fly since the dawnof time. Many people had tried it and some, like Otto Lilienthal,had paid the price for their dreams with their lives.

The year is 1903, the place the dunes of Kitty Hawk,on the North Carolina coastline, USA, an area of smoothground and steady breezes. It is three years since two bicyclemakers of Dayton, Ohio, the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright, had started to experiment with kites and gliders builtby themselves. They already knew probably more about thehitherto unknown science of aerodynamics than anyone else in the world. Theyconstructed their own wind tunnel, where wing profiles were tested. They had the soundidea of fitting the aeroplane with a front elevator, thus avoiding the risk of the aircraftsuddenly plummeting into the ground with fatal consequences.

Their gliders, of an outstandingly light and solid construction as a result of their

experience in the manufacturing of bicycles, flew increasingly longer distances, someof the flights achieving nearly 200 yards. But they had to manage to get the aeroplaneto take-off with its own power, sustain itself in the air and be controlled by the pilot. As none of the engines available atthat time were of use for them, theydecided to construct one forthemselves, a four-cylinder engine with a weight of 138 lbs. andan output of 12 hp, a ratio of power to weight fairly good for thetime. Bicycle chains were used for transmitting the power to the two propellers in orderto neutralize the torque. Another sound idea.

The new airplane was named Flyer and was made of Norwegian fir, fabric and wires, weighting 602 lbs, not including the pilot. The chosen day was December the17th. It was a cold morning and in the dunes rain had left small pools of water whichhad been covered with a thin layer of ice. A Northern windof 16-22 knots was blowing. As usual, a coin was tossedto decide who was going the pilot that time. Orville,the lucky one, occupied the pilots position and started theengine. It was 10.35 am. He released the retention cableand the aeroplane began to move slowly forward,against a wind of 23 knots. After a run of some12 yards the aircraft took off, climbed to 9 feet,descended, climbed again and finally touched down,at a distance of little more than 30 yards away fromthe end of the taking-off rail. The flight had lastedfor 12 seconds. They had achieved it!. They werethe pioneers and therefore their names wouldbe engraved in the golden book of mankinds advances.

El Museo del AireEs un organismo del Servicio Histrico y Cultural del Ejrcito del Aire (SHYCEA) creado con la finalidad de custodiar y conservarlos bienes que constituyen el patrimonio histrico de laaeronutica espaola, exponindolos pblicamente para generalconocimiento y exaltacin de las ms relevantes gestasaeronuticas. Aunque el proyecto inicial proviene de la inmediata posguerratendran que pasar cuatro dcadas para que se abriera alpblico, el 24 de mayo de 1981, en el apropiado marco delhistrico aerdromo de Cuatro Vientos, el primero en ser creadoen Espaa, en el ao 1911.El crecimiento en sus instalaciones ha sido constante y ello se hareflejado en la construccin de nuevos hangares paracomplementar el primero con el que se cont, crecimiento que hamarchado en paralelo a la incorporacin de nuevas aeronavesque se han ido aadiendo a la coleccin expuesta, algunas de

ellas reconstrucciones o rplicas al no poder encontrarse ya elmodelo original. Actualmente la coleccin consta de ms de 125 aeronaves y demultitud de objetos y uniformes aeronuticos, contndose conpiezas nicas como el Breguet XIX tipo Grand Raid Jess del GranPoder, un autogiro La Cierva C19, un Heinkel 111 E nico en elmundo y el De Havilland Dragon Rapide que traslad al generalFranco de Las Palmas a Tetun para ponerse al frente del ejrcitonacional al inicio de la Guerra Civil, as como diversos avionesproducidos por la industria aeronutica espaola como laHispano Aviacin, CASA y Aeronutica Industrial.

The Air Museum is part of the Air Force Historical and CulturalService, created to acquire and preserve the Spanish Aeronauticalheritage. This is displayed to the public for the general knowledgeand recognition of the most important aeronautical feats. Although the original project dates back to the years immediatelyafter the Spanish Civil War, four decades would pass until theMuseum opened on 24th May 1981. It is appropriately situated inthe historical airfield of Cuatro Vientos, the first to be opened inSpain in 1911.The growth of the installations has been continuous and this hasresulted in the erection of additional hangars. In parallel newaircraft have been added to the collection, some of these beingrestorations and replicas as the originals no longer exist.The current collection has more than 125 aircraft and numerousaeronautical artefacts and uniforms, including such unique piecesas the Breguet XIX Grand Raid Jess del Gran Poder, a CiervaC19 autogyro, the sole-surviving Heinkel 111 in the world and theDe Havilland Dragon Rapide which carried General Franco from

Las Palmas to Tetuan to take charge of the Nationalist forces in thebeginning of the Civil War. There is also a collection of aeroplanesbuilt by the Spanish aeronautical companies, as Hispano Aviacin, CASA and Aeronutica Industrial.

Parc Aeronutic de CatalunyaLa Fundacion Parc Aeronutic de Catalunya nace en 1997reuniendo un heterogneo conjunto de entidades y personassignificadas del mundo de la aeronutica catalana. El vnculo deunin no era otro sino recuperar y dar a conocer el patrimoniohistrico aeronutico.En la actualidad dispone de su sede central en el aeropuerto deSabadell y dos delegaciones en el Prat de Llobregat y Vilanova. Enlos dos hangares de Sabadell se van almacenando, restaurando yponiendo en vuelo una serie de aviones, planeadores y helicpteros,

con la ayuda de la Escuela de Formacin Ocupacional propia querene a 22 chicos y chicas que reciben enseanza bsica en estasmaterias y que, de seguir con dichos estudios alcanzaran latitulacin de TMA.El tercer domingo de cada mes se abren las puertas y se puedencontemplar algunas de las doce aeronaves en vuelo, las que sehallan en curso de restauracin y las estticas.Entre las primeras cabe destacar la nica T34 Mentor en vuelo enEuropa, una Fairchild 24R, un T6D, dos Bcker Jungmann, una notan antigua pero s muy rara S223 Flamingo y, operando desde elaeropuerto de Gerona, el reactor HA220 Supersaeta.Entre los numerosos aviones estticos cabe destacar un F86 Sabre yun Lockheed T33, en Vilanova y, en El Prat, una Mignon Pou du Ciel y una interesante rplica del Monocoqe con el que el pionero Hedilla

vol de Barcelona a Mallorca.La edicin de monografas sobre temas de inters histrico, muyespecialmente relacionados con los inicios de la actividadaeronutica en Catalua, y la celebracin de conferencias,completan el panorama de las actividades de esta joven Fundacincultural.

The Parc Aeronutic de Catalunya Foundation was created in 1997,gathering together a heterogeneous group of well-known entities andpeople in the world of Catalonian aeronautics. The common link wasthe aim to retrieve and popularise the aeronautical heritage.Nowadays its headquarters are located at Sabadell Airport with twolocal branches at El Prat de Llobregat and Vilanova. In the twohangars in Sabadell the aeroplanes, gliders and helicopters arestored and restored to flying condition with the help of anOccupational Training School run by the Foundation. The school has22 students who are taught the basics of this subject, and they willgiven a TMA (Aircraft Maintenance Engineer) qualification when theyfinish their studies.On the third Sunday of each month the headquarters are opened tothe public and several of the twelve airworthy aeroplanes can beseen, as well as those under restoration and the static displays. Amongst the airworthy planes are the only T34 Mentor currently inflying condition in Europe, a Fairchild 24R, a T6D, two Bcker Jungmann, one not very old but a very rare S223 Flamingo, as wellas a HA220 Supersaeta jet which operates from Gerona airport.The static aircraft include a F86 Sabre, a Lockheed T33 at Vilanova,and a Mignon Pou du Ciel, which can be seen at El Prat, along sidean interesting replica of the Monocoqe in which the aviation pioneer,Hedilla, flew from Barcelona to Majorca.The publication of papers and lectures on subjects of historicalinterest, specially related to the beginnings of the aeronauticalactivities in Catalonia, complete the activities of this young culturalFoundation.
