RAW

RAW es un estudio de arquitectura fundado en Nueva York en 2013 por Carlos García Fernández (1982, Asturias) y Begoña de Abajo Castrillo (1986, León). Con el objetivo de tener un alcance global, entiende la arquitectura como la conjunción de experiencias dentro de los campos del diseño, la construcción y la academia. Su trabajo se basa en la búsqueda de posibilidades en las limitaciones de la realidad y opera

mediante el proceso de materialización de las ideas.

Arquitectos formados en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), ambos han sido becarios Fulbright en la Universidad de Columbia en Nueva York, donde han realizado un Master en Diseño Arquitectónico Avanzado y donde han sido profesores asistentes en la Barnard and Columbia School of Architecture. A través de la observación, el entendimiento y la acción sobre las condiciones existentes, RAW basa tanto su práctica profesional como su proyecto docente en lo real, en aprender haciendo y en la

materialización de las ideas dentro del marco de la construcción física.

Ganadores del primer premio en el concurso para un Centro Sociocultural en Reinosa/España, trasladan su oficina a Madrid en 2014, desde donde continúan su interés por la investigación, la pedagogía y la práctica de

Arquitectura como una forma de definir una voz personal dentro de la disciplina.

RAW

RAW is an architecture office founded in New York in 2013 by Carlos García Fernández (1982, Asturias) and Begoña de Abajo Castrillo (1986, León). With the aim of a global reach, it understands architecture as a conjunction of experiences in the fields of design, construction and academia. The practice is founded in the belief of finding opportunities in the constraints of reality and operates within the process of materializing ideas

by means of construction.

Trained in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), both have been Fulbright Fellows at Columbia University in New York City where they have graduated from the Master in Advance Architectural Design. They have also worked as Teacher Assistants at the Barnard and Columbia School of Architecture. RAW bases its professional practice and its pedagogical agenda on the real, the philosophy of learning by doing and the materialization of ideas within the realm of physical construction through the observation,

understanding and action on the existing conditions.

After winning the first prize in the competition for the construction of a Sociocultural Center in Reinosa/Spain, they move the office to Madrid, from where they continue with the interest on research, pedagogy and practice

in Architecture as a way of defining a personal voice withing the discipline.

Begoña de Abajo was born in Leon in 1986.She studied Architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM) where she graduated obtaining the Extraordinary End of Studies Prize and the Prize for the Best Academic Curriculum within the Field of Construction of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. She also studied at the Illinois Institute

of Technology in Chicago in 2008 and 2009 where she was included in the Dean´s list. Before she finished her studies she collaborated with Dosmasuno Arquitectos in Madrid and she got the Arquia Prize in 2009 to work at Alvaro Siza´s office in Porto. In 2010 she started working at Foster and Partners and

she finished her Final Degree Project with Honors in 2011. After that she was part of the Chateaux Margaux Winery team at F+P and the Porcelanosa Flagship Store in

New York.After graduating from the Master in Advanced Architectural Design at Columbia University as Fulbright Fellow

in 2014 she moves to Madrid to continue her professional practice as co-founder of RAW.

Begoña de Abajo nació en Leon en 1986.Estudió Arquitectura en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM) donde obtuvo el Premio Extraordinario y el Premio al Mejor Expediente Académico en el Área de la Construcción y la Edificación de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. También estudió en el Illinois Institute of Technology en

Chicago en el curso 2008-2009 donde recibió reconocimiento oficial por su trabajo.Antes de terminar sus estudios colaboró con Dosmasuno Arquitectos en Madrid y consiguió el Premio Arquia en 2009 para trabajar en la oficina de Alvaro Siza en Oporto. En 2010 empezó a trabajar en Foster and

Partners y se graduó en 2011 con Matrícula de Honor en el Proyecto Fin de Carrera. Posteriormente en F+P, formó parte del equipo del Chateaux Margaux Winery y del Showroom de Porcelanosa

Carlos García Fernández was born in Cangas del Narcea, Asturias in 1982.He received his degree in Architecture from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM) in 2009 with outstanding grades. He also studied at the Architecture School of Technische Universiteit Delft in Holland in 2005 and 2006 with an Erasmus Fellowship, he has been a guest researcher at KEIO University in Tokyo under the supervision of Kazuyo Sejima during the summer of 2010 and he was awarded with the

Architecture Fellowship at the Spanish Academy in Rome in 2010-2011. Before graduating he worked for several years in the office of Jesús Aparicio and as an independent architect he has won several awards in ideas competitions. His built work in Spain includes a Sailing School in Sotogrande,

Cadiz with Héctor Fernández Elorza and a Single Family House in Asturias. After graduating from the Master in Advanced Architectural Design at Columbia University as Fulbright Fellow in 2014 he moves to Madrid to continue his professional practice as co-founder of RAW and his teaching

activity as faculty in the Architectural Projects Department at ETSAM /UPM.

DESORDENNueva York está llena de objetos reconocibles que generan su identidad. Desde los depósitos de agua, las escaleras de emergencia en fachada a las tapas de alcantarilla, el tejido urbano está compuesto por una adición de elementos que aparentemente representan el caos de la ciudad. Mi obsesión es encontrar los sistemas escondidos detras de ese caos entre los objetos más mundanos posibles. Puede que no seamos conscientes de ellos y provablemente tampoco somos conscientes de cuantos nos rodean, sin embargo, siempre existe una razón para todo y una regla que encontrar.

DISORDERNew York is full of recognizable objects that generate its identity. From water tanks, fire scape staircases to manholes, the urban fabric is composed by an addition of elements that apparently perform the chaos of the city. It is my obsession to find the systems hidden behind that chaos within the more mundane things possible. We may not be aware of them and provably we may not be aware of how many of them surround us, however, there is always a reason for everything and there is always a rule that can be found.

We never get to see it from the top, maybe that is why we do not realize about it or maybe that is why the picture

becomes more surprising. The amount of disordered lids or manholes in the street is disturbing, but we are already used to it, we don´t care if there is no order, but is there

any?

Nunca llegamos a verlo desde arriba, a lo mejor es por eso que no nos damos cuenta o quizá eso es lo que hace que la imagen sea aún más sorprendente. La cantidad de

tapas y alcantarillas desordenadas en la calle es inquietante, pero ya estamos acostumbrados a ellas, no

nos importa que no haya un orden, pero, existirá alguno?

There are manholes everywhere. We could observe them from a closer perspective and

still we don´t care until we stumble over one of then. From the street to the sidewalk, they have different shapes and sizes, and sometimes they even have colors. They look similar but they have different functions, they are part of

the system.

Hay tapas y alcantarillas por todas partes. Podemos observarlas desde una perspectiva más cercana y aún así no nos preocupan hasta que nos tropezamos con una de ellas. Desde la calle a la acera, tienen diferentes formas y tamaños, y a veces incluso colores. Parecen similares pero tienen diferentes funciones, son parte del sistema.

Es cuando desmontamos el todo en sus partes cuando podemos analizarlo y sistematizarlo.

Cada una de las tapas y alcantarillas están ahí por una razón y en base a ella se organizan adecuándose a

diferentes grupos. Sin embargo, más allá de esta funcionalidad, cada una sigue un patrón diferente, desde

las más sencillas a las más ornamentadas.It is when we break up the whole into its parts when we

can analyze and systematized it.Each one of those lids is there for a reason, and based on that they are arranged fitting into different groups. However, on top of that functionality, each one follows

specific patterns, going from the more plain to the more ornamental one.

Las partes y los todosLa división del programa en sus partes permite entenderlo, cuestionar la tipología y generar nuevos sistemas. El orden del sistema generado se desordena con su uso. La megaestructura es un aparato abierto a que ocurran multiples situaciones cuando las personas lo habitan.El proceso de diseño es sistemático y preciso, donde la definición de las partes y su repetición crea el todo. La arquitectura resultante es un campo que actua como marco de programas específicos que pueden desarrollare de muchas manera diferentes.El programa es una herramienta para crear unidades operacionales, pragmáticas y funcionales. Las propiedades de estas unidades me permiten estableces reglas y estrategías para interrelacionarlas. Además, una nueva materia continua y contingente se genera entre las unidades discreta tras la repetición.

The Parts and the WholesThe break up of the program into its parts allows to deal with it, question the type and generate new systems. The order of the resulting system is disordered by its use. The superstructure is a device for things to happen when people inhabit it.The proccess of design is systematic and precise, where the definition of the parts and its repetition creates the whole. The resulting architecture is a field that acts as a frame for a specific program to perform in many different ways.The program given is a tool to create the operational, pragmatic and functional units. The properties of these units allows me to set up rules and strategies to interrelate them. Furthermore, a new continuous and contingent matter is generated in between those discrete units after that repetition.

Paisaje Accidentado e Incertidumbre CalculadaLa identidad de Alphabet City es reconocida por un gran número de jardines comunitarios localizados en el barrio. Sin embargo, como muchas otras zonas de Manhattan, existe otro tipo de network de espacios que abundan en la ciudad, los espacios intersticiales. Cuestionar la ocupación y el uso de estos espacios presenta cierta dicotomía entre lo público y lo privado. Podrían invadirse los espacios intermedios con usos individuales, debido a sus dimensiones, como extensiones del ámbito público pero para una sola persona o como extensiones del espacio privado pero de uso temporal?

Accidental Environment and Calculated UncertaintyThe identity of Alphabet city is recognised by a vast amount of community gardens located in the neighborhood. However, like other areas in Manhattan, there is other kind of “network” of spaces that are also very abundant, which is the one of the leftovers. To raise the question of using those spaces brings the dichotomy between the public and the private. Would it be possible to occupy them with individual uses, due to their dimensions, as extensions of the public realm but for only one person, or extensions of the private space but as temporary use of it?

AutoconstrucciónLa bodega se sitúa en un pequeño pueblo al norte de España, cercano a las montañas. El complejo contiene bodega, casa de vacaciones, pista de tenis, una pequeña granja y un huerto. Este programa podría interpretarse como una mezcla de paquetes, muy diferentes entre ellos pero contenidos en el mismo lugar. Por ello, la idea es literalmente construir estos paquetes como una sucesión de eventos. Cada uno de ellos separado del siguiente mediante un muro. La repetición de los huecos permite pasar de uno a otro como un espectador para elegir cual de ellos usar en cada momento.La materialidad de los muros responde a las posibilidades de la autoconstrucción. El proceso constructivo se estudia para ser distendido en el tiempo, ya que el cliente ejecutará cada paquete poco a poco hasta completarlo.

Self-onstructionThe winery is located in a small village in the North of Spain, close to the mountains. The complex contains a winery, a rest house, a tennis court, a small farm and a orchard. The program could be seen as a mixture of packages, very different between them but contained within the same site. Because of that, the idea is to literally build those packages as a sucesion of events. Each one is separated from each other by a wall. A repetition of openings allows the user to pass through each scene as an spectator in order to choose wich one to use.The materiality of the walls answers to the self-construction possibilities. The construction process is studied in order to be expanded it in time, since the client will develope each step little by little in a self-construction process. Each wall will be built separately until the completion of the whole.

El objetivo de la oNG es crear una escuela abierta en Bom Jesus dos Pobres. Conseguir ese objetivo empieza por tener un espacio donde dar las clases.La idea busca la simplicidad, dado el presupuesto ajustado y la flexibilidad necesaria para el programa de la escuela. Un cobertizo para proteger de la lluvia. El único elemento necesario son la cubierta y su estructura. Varios muros trabajan no solo como estructura sino como definidores de espacios. Su orientación perpendicular a la costa genera una circulación cruzada.Para prevenir las inundaciones, la escuela se eleva del nivel del suelo, creando un plinto desde el cual crecen los muros.De acuerdo con el presupuesto inicial, la primera etapa no ocupara todo el basamento. Más adelante se irán construyecdo los muros hasta completar el esquema final, creando un edificio más compacto.

The goal of the ONG is to create an open school for Bom Jesus dos Pobres. To reach that objective the first step is to have the space where the classes can take place.The idea looks toward the simplicity, given the tight budget and the flexibility needed for the program of the school. A shed to protect from the rain. The only elements needed are the roof and its structure. Several walls works not only as such struc-ture but also to define spaces. Its orientation perpendicular to the coast generates a cross circulation, while the use of the spaces takes place in between those walls.In order to prevent flooding, the school will be elevated a few steps, creating a plinth where the walls grow up.According to the initial budget, the first stage will not occupy the whole plinth, leaving open spaces for multipurpose uses. New walls will be built in future stages, within the grid stablished at the beggining, creating a more compact building in the future.

Ubicado en la península danesa de la ciudad de Almere, el proyecto sirve como transición entre lo natural y lo artificial.Bajo el marco teórico del sistema pedagógico de la educadora María Montessori el proyecto propone un programa de opuestos: una escuela y un club social para personas mayores. La naturaleza dual de sus servicios, que requieren espacios independientes junto con zonas de intercambio y relación entre ambos programas, es resuelta por medio de un sistema basado en la unidad mínima, el muro equipado, el cual se converte en el núcleo funcional y estructural del proyecto. Esta unidad recoge las instalaciones, mobiliario, almacenaje y otros servicios, en favos de la flexibilidad programática y espacial. La repetición controlada de las unidades genera series de patios entre ellas y el meticuloso desorden genera un tapiz homogeneo en el que arquitectura y vegetación se funden en una pieza continua.

Located in a small peninsula in the Dutch city of Almere, the project serves as a transition between the natural and the artificial.Under the theoretical frame of the pedagogical system of the educator Maria Montessori the project proposes a program of opposites: a school and a social club for the elderly. The dual nature of its services, which demands many independet spaces and, at the same time, several areas of relationship and exchange among users is adressed with a system based on the minimun unit, the equipped wall, which is the functional and structural core of the project. It gathers the installations and furniture, storage space and other services, thus favoring spatial and programatic flexibility. The calculated repetition of this unit generates a series of courtyards in between them and its meticulous disorder generates a homogeneous tapestry in which architecture and vegetation melt together.
