Zamboni Middle School Recognized

Zamboni’s Taking Center Stage…Again! Zamboni es el centro de atención… ¡una vez más!

During a recent Board of Education meeting, Board members and Superintendent Dr. Pérez pre-sented Frank J. Zamboni Middle School Principal Elizabeth Salcido and staff with a plaque recogniz-ing their commitment and dedication to the students and for their recent “Schools To Watch” Redesig-nation Award. Schools To Watch is a recognition program similar to California Distinguished Schools that recognizes middle schools that are academically excellent, socially equitable and have a culture of strong collaborative leadership. It is a highly selec-tive process and few middle schools are given the Schools To Watch status.

In February, Zamboni Mid-dle School was recognized as a re-designated California Schools to Watch – Taking Center Stage award recipient during a ceremony in Sacra-mento, California. Zamboni’s principal, Mrs. Elizabeth Sal-cido, and Assistant Principal, Ms. Lisa Kirk, traveled to our state capitol along with our coaches and two of our coun-selors to receive the award and

attend the California League of Middle Schools conference. The Schools to Watch award is given to high-performing mid-dle schools across the nation, and the Wildcats were very proud to receive this honor once again. Board President Tony Peña, Board Member Alicia Anderson, Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez and Assistant Su-perintendent Dr. Debbie Stark also attended the ceremony

and were honored, as Zamboni could not be the mighty school that we are without the Board and District’s dedication and support. We are so grateful for their joining us, and we were all smiles as we were able to celebrate this honor together!

While we were in Sacra-mento, Board Member Alicia Anderson also led us on a trip to

Reconocimiento a la Escuela intermedia Zamboni

Durante una reunión de la Junta Directiva de Educación, los miembros de la Junta y la Superintendente Dra. Pérez entregaron una Placa de reconocimiento a Elizabeth Salcido, directora de la Escuela Frank J. Zamboni y a su personal por su compromiso y dedicación hacia los estudiantes y su reciente nombramiento de “Schools to Watch”. Schools to Watch es un programa de reconocimiento similar al de Escuelas Distinguidas que recon-oce a las escuelas intermedias que se destacan académica y socialmente y que tienen una cultura de fuerte liderazgo. A quote brought to life as guest readers from the surrounding Para-mount community poured into Los Cerritos School on the morning of Friday, March 4th to celebrate the magical life of Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss.

Community members were ushered onto a balloon- filled colorful campus reminiscent of the whimsical back-drops found in so many of the good doctor’s books. Costume characters ranging from the formidable Grinch, the wise Lorax , a playful Cat in the Hat, a pair of pirouetting Thing 1 and 2’s, and some sparkly Star Belly Sneetches sidled up to students and guest readers alike as they dug into a hearty green eggs and ham breakfast.

Morning announcements consist-ing of the culmination of a week long Seuss biography and Guess the Seuss book and door contest signaled the transition of students and guest read-ers into the classrooms for the start of the much anticipated story time. Approximately 50 guest readers from varied businesses such as Home De-pot, Paramount Rotary Club, Rite Aid,

Bianchi Theatre, Wells Fargo Bank and Paramount Sheriff as well as a cadre of retired Paramount Unified School District teachers and two very special guests of honor, Paramount City Council Member Diane Marti-nez and PUSD Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez, accompanied fourth and fifth grade student readers in filling twenty-five kindergarten to fifth grade classrooms with Seussical rhythms and rhymes.

As the reading time came to a close, guest readers and students filed out of classrooms to a playing Seuss musical soundtrack and met as a group to sing a rousing “Happy Birthday” to our favorite author as well as cut a ceremonial cake. Guest and student readers were presented with certificates amid the cheers from appreciative students. It was a morn-ing to remember summed up best by the great Dr. Seuss, “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”

Una cita que lectores invitados de la comunidad de Paramount revivieron al llegar a la Escuela Los Cerritos la mañana del viernes, 4 de marzo para celebrar la vida mágica de Theodor Geisel, mejor conocido como Dr. Seuss.

Los invitados fueron conducidos por un plantel lleno de globos de colores simulando cortinas coloridas como las que encontramos en los buenos libros de este doctor. Superintendent’s Message:Gaines Grizzlies are Making Healthy Choices!

Wesley Gaines School was delighted to have the Dairy Council of California come to campus with their Mobile Dairy Classroom. They enjoyed seeing a live dairy cow and learning how food gets from farm-to-table through this interac-tive “classroom on wheels.” Students were thrilled to meet their guest Ruby, a six year old Jersey cow from a farm in Chino, California. The presenter shared information about a cow’s diet, how milk is produced, and the variety of dairy products that come from milk such as cheese, ice cream, and yogurt. Danika Araiza, a second grader was es-pecially thrilled when she was given an opportunity to pet a calf that was born

only six weeks ago.The “classroom on wheels” assem-

bly allows our school to further promote health and wellness by encouraging our students to make healthy choices. It also supports academic achievement by expanding student’s vocabulary and knowledge of the world. In addition to the assembly, teachers received nutrition education curriculum that reinforces the importance of healthy eating habits. At Wesley Gaines School, a healthy body equals a healthy mind. So move aside junk food because Gaines Grizzlies are choosing healthy living!

Los osos Grizzlies de Gaines toman decisiones saludables!

Estuvimos deleitados en la Es-cuela Wesley Gaines al recibir la visita del Consejo de Productos Lácteos de California en su salón de clase móvil. Los estudiantes estuvi-eron fascinados de ver en vivo una vaca y aprender en este salón inter-activo sobre ruedas, cómo llegan los alimentos desde la granja a nuestra mesa. Fue un gusto para los estudi-antes conocer a la invitada de honor Ruby, una vaca Jersey de una granja de Chino, California. Since January when I became Superintendent for the Paramount Unified School District, I embarked upon a mission to meet with as many community members possible, students, parents, teachers, staff, as-sociations and community groups in order to build relationships and learn what makes the Paramount commu-nity and schools so committed and caring about its’ children. I am now planning to hold a special meeting to hear what you have to say about the education our students are receiving in Paramount. I would like to know every one of our partner’s thinking on how we can best serve our students by garnering feedback on the strengths and areas for improvement in the Dis-trict. Most importantly, I wish to gain

your insight on how we can offer a world-class education with excellence and equity to empower each student to reach his or her highest potential.

The contribution of your valuable time to this meeting will help determine outcomes for a five-year Strategic Plan that will encapsulate a vision for the fu-ture of the District. I am asking that you join me at a community meeting I will be holding. The purpose of the meeting is to receive your feedback on how we can excel by building on our current successes and creating new paths that will provide our students with every opportunity to obtain a solid academic foundation for the future.

Desde enero, cuando me convertí en la Superintendente del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Paramount, me embarque en la misión de conocer a la mayoría de los miembros de la comunidad, estudiantes, padres de familia, personal, asociaciones y grupos comunitarios y así, crear una relación y saber por qué la comunidad de Paramount y sus escuelas ponen tanto interés en sus niños. mount. Mokler Pilots Celebrate Read Across America

Los Pilotos de Mokler celebran La Lectura por todo America

In honor of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America, Mokler Pilots took an oath to read every day with a goal of reading for 1 million minutes this school year. Each day was themed with a different Dr. Seuss book. On Mon-day, students wore red, white or blue and received a visit from the Cat in the Hat and 5 different Things. Tuesday’s celebration included a reading from The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins and a challenge to count hats around school. The campus was filled with mismatched or crazy socks on Wednesday in honor of Fox in Socks. On Thursday, students came in their pajamas and read with bud-dies from different grades. The week’s

celebrations concluded with a reading of Oh, the Places You’ll Go where students sported their college shirts. Parents were invited to read with their children in our annual Reading on the Green.

Although celebrations during the first week of March have ended, we will continue to promote reading at Mokler. Each month, students are encouraged to turn in a reading and comprehension log for prizes. The goal is for each stu-dent to read 20 minutes every day with a school goal of reading for 1 million minutes by the end of the school year.

En honor al natalicio de Dr. Seuss y La Lectura por todo America (Read Across America,) los Pilotos de Mokler se comprometieron a leer todos los días y lograr la meta de un millón de minutos de lectura este año escolar. Durante la semana, tuvimos un tema diferente cada día. El lunes los estudiantes se vistieron de rojo, blanco y azul y recibieron la visita de Cat in the Hat y 5 Things.
