The clandestine struggle of a group of young idealists who intend to put an end to the

dictatorship of Franco shapes an organization that has little to do with what we now know: the

ETA of its inception. Mario Onaindia is one of those young left-wing people, interested in

politics, who, before he had time to perform great deeds, is arrested and sentenced to death

by the regime in the notorious process of Burgos. These are convulsive years, which Mario and

his companions watch go by from prison, as their death sentence was commuted thanks to

international pressure. Upon leaving, things have changed, Franco is gone, and new paths

open up for other ways of fighting, but not everyone shares the ideas of Mario and his newly

founded party, not the reactionary right, nor his former colleagues, who refuse to lay down

arms and are now those who condemn it.



When we decided to make a movie based on a part of Mario Onaindia’s life, an exercise

in memory recalled a turbulent period, yes, violent and torn, but at the same time full

of energy and vitality that over the years were gradually diluted due to a combination

of rancid policy, a comfortable life and cultural torpor.

So when I started to make contact with the thoughtful memories of Mario with his wife

Esozi, his friend Teo, and many other people who lived all that piece of history in the

first person, I was able to vibrate with the story of a few people who still maintain an

enviable heroism. People who put the interest of all before their own, who struggled

faithfully and who endured many setbacks with a great dose of courage and an

unyielding sense of humor. I just hope some of all this is captured there in the film,

impregnating its good spirit in it. I am proud to have shared with them part of their

history, that is the history of our country. I thank them wholeheartedly.

Ana Murugarren Is a film director and editor. Awarded the Best Editing Prize -Film

Writers Circle- for her work in "Todo por la Pasta", along with Joaquín Trincado,

Enrique Urbizu or Luis Marías. Ana Murugarren has created such titles as “Tu novia

está loca”, “Todo por la pasta” or “Sálvate si puedes”. In 2006 she was awarded the

Prize for Film Creativity, -Punto Radio, Grupo Vocento- for the full length feature film

"Esta no es la vida privada de Javier Krahe", co-directed with Joaquín Trincado. She is

now presenting “El precio de la libertad”, a coproduction of Blogmedia with TVE and

ETB.

The whole miniseries was filmed in real settings acclimated to the time, some of them

historic buildings that were witness to important events of those years, between 1969

and 1982.

- Most sites are located in Bilbao. In the centre of the city, the old customs building -

used for housing and now vacant- has been recreated Mario Onaindia’s family-

house, and also the safe house where he would be arrested at the end of the 60’s

- Somera Street and surrounding alleys were the place chosen by the producer BlogMedia

for the second day of shooting of the miniseries El precio de la libertad. The bar Bikandi is

the regular meeting-point of the protagonists in the second chapter, where they usually

stop to eat some pintxos and discuss the political news.

- Eibar hosts the rainiest day of shooting, according to the atmosphere of the sequences,

which tell Mario's departure from his parents’ house.

- The prison of Basauri provided an opportunity for some team members to feel in

their flesh the sensation of being trapped, having to cross a security door after

another, and working with the minimum equipment necessary to roll the

conversations in the visiting rooms

- The most impressive location, no doubt, is the room where the trial took place,

the so-called Process of Burgos, with 16 defendants, which resolved in 6 death

sentences. The space symbolism from Franco’s time dressed on again the day of

shooting with more extras, recalling that in December 1970

- The film set that was already hosting for another Spanish film, Torrente IV, is the

former prison of Segovia. In the jail pretending to be the prison of Caceres, and

also of Cordoba, spent their years in prison Mario and his companions once

commuted their death penalty. And in the same courtyard where inmates spent

their time, members of the film-crew took advantage to play a football match.
