Why Suffering?

¿por qué hay sufrimiento?

If there is a God, then why is there so much suffering and pain in the world? Why did God allow Hitler and all sorts of other atrocities? Why doesn't He put a stop to that, if He's in control?

Si Dios existe, ¿por qué hay tanto sufrimiento y dolor en el mundo? ¿Por qué permitió las atrocidades cometidas por Hitler y tantas otras? Si Él lo controla todo, ¿por qué no pone fin a esas cosas?

First of all, God doesn't do those things—man does. And if God didn't allow evil men to carry out their evil plans, then He'd have to put a stop to man's freedom of choice, which is an important part of His great design. Man was put here to make a choice between good and evil, to do right or wrong. And in the process God gives us the opportunity to learn the benefits of loving Him and keeping the loving rules He has made for our own good.

En primer lugar, Dios no hace esas cosas. Son obra del hombre. Y si Dios impidiera a los perversos llevar a cabo sus viles propósitos tendría que poner fin al libre albedrío del hombre, el cual constituye un aspecto importante de Su plan maestro. El hombre fue creado para escoger entre el bien y el mal, entre actuar con acierto u obrar mal. Dentro de ese proceso Dios nos concede la oportunidad de conocer los beneficios que nos reporta el amarlo a Él y obedecer las normas benévolas que ha establecido por nuestro propio bien.

"In the world you will have tribulation," Jesus told us. (John 16:33) In other words, troubles are more of a guarantee than a stroke of bad luck. Good and evil are both liberally distributed in the world, with no distinction as to the religious or moral inclinations of the individual. "[God] makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.“ (Matthew 5:45). God is not some kind of Santa who only brings presents for the good children.

«En el mundo tendréis aflicción», dijo Jesús. (Juan 16:33) Dicho de otro modo, los problemas no son golpes de mala suerte, sino que los tenemos garantizados. Tanto el bien como el mal están generosamente distribuidos por el mundo, sin reparar en las inclinaciones religiosas o morales de las personas. «[Dios] hace salir Su sol sobre malos y buenos, y hace llover sobre justos e injustos» (Mateo 5:45). Él no es una suerte de Papá Noel que solo lleva regalos a los niños buenos.

The Bible lets us know that we can expect to go through some difficult times while we’re on this earth. The good news is that it also promises that we won’t have to go through them alone. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” (Psalm 23:4). “I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:8)

Venimos al mundo a pasar dificultades. No podemos pretender que nuestra estancia en la Tierra sea toda blanda y apacible. Además, la Biblia nos lo garantiza. Lo bueno es que también nos promete que no estamos solos, que tenemos compañía. «Aun si voy por valles tenebrosos, no temo peligro alguno porque Tú estás a mi lado» (Salmo 23:4) «Sé que el Señor siempre está conmigo» (Salmo 16:8)

Christ did not come to do away with suffering; He did not come to explain it; He came to fill it with His presence. It is not a question of God allowing or not allowing things to happen. It is part of living. Our response to what happens is more important than what happens. Here is a mystery: one man's experience drives him to curse God, while another man's identical experience drives him to bless God. Your response to what happens is more important than what happens.

Cristo no vino para acabar con el sufrimiento ni para explicárnoslo, sino para llenarlo con Su presencia. No se trata de si Dios permite o no que sucedan ciertas cosas. Simplemente son parte de la vida. Nuestras reacciones son más importantes que los sucesos que las motivan. He aquí un misterio: una experiencia vivida por un hombre lo lleva a maldecir a Dios, mientras que la misma experiencia lleva a otro a bendecirlo. Nuestra reacción ante un suceso tiene más importancia que el suceso mismo.
