“ ............Key findings indicate that Americans oppose a ban on GM foods, but are strongly supportive of a regulatory Process that directly involves the FDA. It was also determined that Americans are far more comfortable with genetic modifications to plants than animals, and are particularly supportive ofgenetic modifications that improve health...........”

“Surveys conducted around the world find that the public is relatively uniformed about genetically modified food and overall acceptance for the technology is low. Currentliterature suggests that approval for GM food is linked to knowledge suggesting a strong positive linear relationship............The results suggest that while Americans and Canadians seem to know more factual information about geneticsthan their European and Chinese counterparts, overallknowledge seems quite low.........”

“.....but they all agree that we need
- more impartial communication, - less propaganda - and an effective regulatory regime that is based on careful case-by-case consideration of GM technology.

“...Unfortunately , research indicates that GM promoters (e.g. industrial and governmental) are not particularly well trusted, and until this is addressed, findings like those from Lusk might be difficult to apply.

“...the science behind GM is highly technical, but it isnot necessary for members of the public to have in-depth knowledge of the sccience to form an opinion on the socialand ethical implications.
...........
... GM crops will only be banned if they are found to be detrimental to human health or the environment, but they will only be a success if there is market for their products.
