Paz-Holandesa is a foundation who’s core business is to organize and provide free medical help to children in Peru since 2000.In 2005 EGM Architects decided to adopt and fund this initiative by designing a children’s hospital. By doing so, they further enable Paz-Holandesa to fulfill its goal on a larger scale. The first sections have been taken into use in 2009.The construction consists of a collection of small pavilions in which different functions are located. Because of the dry and warm climate the main function of the outside area is to connect the different pavilions; this is a commonly seen structure used in school buildings – the privacy which is created by the open space between the pavilions suggests a safe haven in the child’s world. Building materials are from local origin, such as the white sillar from the nearby volcano El Misti, the wooden window frames and the wall plaster. Thus resulting in a simple small scale hospital with stunning details, leading the day light inside to reflect on its surprisingly beautiful and colorful ‘made as you go’ concrete floor. To the proud Peruvian builders, to the Dutchsuppliers, to the Dordrecht-based designers and – first and foremost – to the ever cheerful children of Arequipa, these are the features which turn this project into something truly remarkable.

Peru is a Third World country. The gap between rich and poor is a large one. A substantial part of Peru’s population lives in poverty. Basic healthcare is still under developed and far from accessible to everyone. Children with birth defects such as for example schisis or a clubfoot, remain untreated. This results in their being excluded, neglected and isolated. In building the Tony Molleapaza Children’s Hospital, Foundation Paz-Holandesa aims to improve the circumstances of disadvantaged children by offering free medical care. Co-working with Marjan van Mourik, one of the founders of Paz-Holandesa, proves to be of great importance. Her background as a former OR-assistant at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, her (medical) network, her dedication, her commitment and involvement make her an extremely reliable partner. Several times a year Dutch physicians visit the hospital in order to perform operations. In the future our aim is to turn the project into a self-sufficient one.
The children’s hospital is situated in Arequipa, a city with 900.000 inhabitants and thus one of Peru’s largest cities.

Our actual visit to the area in 2006 was an important step towards the on-sight steering of the building process. At the same time we gained insight in the use of the materials and took the opportunity to motivate the people. By now the building process is in full swing. The first phase, consisting of the poly clinic, the reception – and administration area of the hospital, were officially opened in September 2008. The hospital in its completed state comprises operating rooms, a childrens’ poly clinic, a pharmacy, an X-ray unit, a laboratory, a private clinic, a restaurant and a guest residence.
The hospital is named after the Peruvian boy Tony Molleapaza Rojas, who died as a result of youth cancer. During the years he spent under the care of our client Marjan van Mourik, his great stamina, his positive character and strong sense of social awareness left behind an indelible impression, all of which resulted in the build of a remarkable hospital named after a remarkable child.

The build of the hospital started in January 2007. Peruvian building techniques are not to be compared with those of the Dutch. Making appointments and sticking to them is time and energy consuming. Also there is little to no experience with a systematical way of thinking and building. The quality of a once realized part of the build does not automatically imply the same quality for parts still to be realized.
On the other hand, the builders are extremely motivated and curious to learn about new building techniques. A strong feature in the characteristics of the building is formed by an interesting mix of Dutch ideas and Peruvian solutions. not only is the build a professional challenge, but it also serves as a source of income for a large group of people.
The photos were taken in September 2008.

Official happenings, such as the opening of a new hospital, are festive moments in Peru. During the last two days before the opening, the grass surfaces had to be placed, the steel columns spray painted and the lamps in the poly clinic units, fixed to the ceilings. A large Peruvian flag covered the part of the building which was still under construction and chairs were decorated with elegant covers.
Beside the Dutch parties, the president of the province, the general, the Dutch ambassador, the chairman of Foundation Paz-Holandesa and one of the successfully treated little patients were among the highly respected guests. In their speeches people not only expressed their immense respect and admiration for the amazing achievements so far, but for the achievements of Marjan van Mourik in particular.Accordingly, the first part of the hospital was officially opened.
