Descripción

Este curso está diseñado para familiarizar al estudiante con los conceptos

teóricos y prácticos de las telecomunicaciones en la oficina, Se dará énfasis a los

cuatro sistemas básicos de las telecomunicaciones, a saber: Voz, Datos, Imagen y

Texto (Voice, Data, Image and Text). Los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de

interactuar activamente con la más moderna tecnología de comunicación.

Objetivos Generales

Al finalizar el curso el estudiante:

1. Se familiarizará con los conceptos, historia y teoría de las telecomunicaciones,

de manera que esté informado sobre este campo y su impacto en la oficina.

2. Explicará la convergencia que existe entre la tecnología de le comunicación y

las computadoras; y el papel de las telecomunicaciones como media para

comunicar y manejar información rápidamente.

3. Desarrollará la tecnología básica relacionada con las telecomunicaciones.

4. Identificará medios de comunicación utilizando las cuatro formas básicas de la

telecomunicaciones: voz, data, imagen y texto.

5. Participará en un intercambio cultural de información con estudiantes de otros

países utilizando la computadora como medio de comunicación.

6. Desarrollará habilidad para utilizar adecuadamente los recursos disponibles en

la biblioteca como fuentes de referencia y para ampliar sus conocimientos

sobre el tema.

7. Demostrará consistentemente habilidad para seguir instrucciones, actitud

positiva hacia su trabajo, cooperación, responsabilidad, buena apariencia

personal y buenas relaciones con sus compañeros y profesores..

Asignaciones

Antes de cada taller, el/la estudiante deberá completar ciertas tareas asignadas que

le ayudarán a prepararse para las actividades que se realizarán en el taller. La

asignación deberá presentarse en el idioma en el cual se presentará el taller. No

entregar éstos en el tiempo establecido conlleva a un descuento de 5 puntos por

cada tardanza en la entrega.

Examen

El examen incluye el material de los talleres uno al cuatro y será en inglés

Proyecto Oral y Escrito

Del primero al cuarto taller, el/la estudiante trabajará individual o en grupo en el

desarrollo de un trabajo investigativo final. Cada grupo trabajará una situación real o

ficticia que desarrollará y presentará a la clase. La solución de esta investigación se

entregará en el taller quinto y se dará la presentación oral a la clase. El grupo

escogerá si el trabajo escrito es en español la presentación oral debe ser en inglés

o viceversa. Información para este proyecto ver el Anejo G.

1. Participación significa:

1. Estar presente en la clase.

2. Responder efectivamente a preguntas.

3. Contribuir a la discusión de la clase.




Diario Reflexivo

El estudiante redactará un Diario Reflexivo al finalizar los talleres 1-4, para

reflexionar críticamente y escribir sobre los conceptos, sentimientos y actitudes

relacionados con los procesos de aprendizaje. Debe incluir un autoanálisis y auto

evaluación de su ejecución. Cada diario tendrá un valor de 25 puntos. El (la)

Facilitador (a) indicará si éste se entrega por escrito (Anejo F) o por correo

electrónico.

Informes y presentaciones de casos

En cada taller, el facilitador asignará por lo menos un trabajo individual o en grupo

para ser presentado a la clase en cada taller. El facilitador escogerá los temas del

texto o del Internet según su criterio y explicará las bases del trabajo y lo que

espera como resultado por parte de los estudiantes. El facilitador combinará la

participación y reporte o resultados de los trabajos en grupo o individual, para los

correspondientes 20 puntos en cada taller




Descripción de las normas del curso

1. La asistencia es obligatoria. El estudiante debe excusarse con el facilitador, si

tiene alguna ausencia y reponer todo trabajo. El facilitador se reserva el derecho

de aceptar la excusa y el trabajo presentado y ajustar la evaluación, según

entienda necesario.

2. Las presentaciones orales y actividades especiales no se pueden reponer, si el

estudiante presenta una excusa válida y constatable (Ej. médica o de un

tribunal), se procederá a citarlo para un examen escrito de la actividad a la cual

no asistió.

3. Este curso es de naturaleza acelerada y requiere que el estudiante se prepare

antes de cada taller, según especifica el módulo. Se requiere un promedio de 10

horas semanales para prepararse para cada taller.

4. El estudiante debe someter trabajos de su autoría, por lo tanto, no deberá

incurrir en plagio. Debe dar crédito a cualquier referencia.

5. Si el facilitador realiza algún cambio, deberá discutir los mismos con el

estudiante en el Taller Uno. Además, entregará los acuerdos por escrito a los

estudiantes y al Programa.

6. El facilitador establecerá el medio y proceso de contacto.

7. El uso de teléfonos celulares está prohibido durante los talleres.

8. No está permitido traer niños o familiares en los salones de clases.

9. El estudiante tendrá la oportunidad de aprender tanto a través del español como

del inglés. Los talleres serán facilitados en ambos idiomas en días alternos.

Esto significa que los talleres serán facilitados en un idioma diferente cada

semana. Un estudiante puede interactuar y hacer preguntas en el idioma de su

preferencia; pero, en general, se le solicitará que utilice un solo idioma en

trabajos específicos. En cada curso se utilizará el español y el inglés de forma

equilibrada.

10. En trabajos grupales, salvo situaciones excepcionales, se considerará que el

mismo se prepara por todos los integrantes del grupo y serán evaluados por

igual.

11. Todo estudiante está sujeto a las normas de comportamiento de la institución y

las que se establezcan en el curso.




12. Los trabajos y asignaciones deberán entregarse en la fecha indicada y en su

totalidad.

Filosofía y Metodología Educativa

Este curso está basado en la teoría educativa del Constructivismo.

Constructivismo es una filosofía de aprendizaje fundamentada en la premisa, de

que, reflexionando a través de nuestras experiencias, podemos construir nuestro

propio conocimiento sobre el mundo en el que vivimos.

Cada uno de nosotros genera nuestras propias “reglas “y “métodos mentales”

que utilizamos para darle sentido a nuestras experiencias. Aprender, por lo tanto,

es simplemente el proceso de ajustar nuestros modelos mentales para poder

acomodar nuevas experiencias. Como facilitadores, nuestro enfoque es el

mantener una conexión entre los hechos y fomentar un nuevo entendimiento en los

estudiantes. También, intentamos adaptar nuestras estrategias de enseñanza a las

respuestas de nuestros estudiantes y motivar a los mismos a analizar, interpretar y

predecir información.

Existen varios principios para el constructivismo, entre los cuales están:

1. El aprendizaje es una búsqueda de significados. Por lo tanto, el

aprendizaje debe comenzar con situaciones en las cuales los estudiantes

estén buscando activamente construir un significado.

2. Significado requiere comprender todas las partes. Y, las partes deben

entenderse en el contexto del todo. Por lo tanto, el proceso de

aprendizaje se enfoca en los conceptos primarios, no en hechos aislados.

3. Para enseñar bien, debemos entender los modelos mentales que los

estudiantes utilizan para percibir el mundo y las presunciones que ellos

hacen para apoyar dichos modelos.

4. El propósito del aprendizaje, es para un individuo, el construir su propio

significado, no sólo memorizar las contestaciones “correctas” y repetir el

significado de otra persona. Como la educación es intrínsicamente

interdisciplinaria, la única forma válida para asegurar el aprendizaje es

hacer del avalúo parte esencial de dicho proceso, asegurando que el

mismo provea a los estudiantes con la información sobre la calidad de su

aprendizaje.

5. La evaluación debe servir como una herramienta de auto-análisis.




6. Proveer herramientas y ambientes que ayuden a los estudiantes a

interpretar las múltiples perspectivas que existen en el mundo.

7. El aprendizaje debe ser controlado internamente y analizado por el

estudiante.

Description

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the theoretical and

practical concepts of the telecommunications in the office; emphasis will be to the

four basic systems of telecommunications, that is: Voice, Data, Image and Text.

The students will have the opportunity to interact actively with the most modern

communication technology.

General Objectives

At the end of the course the student will:

1. Familiarize with the concepts, history and theory of the telecommunications, so

he/she will be informed on this field and its impact in the office.

2. Explain the convergence that exists between the technology of the

communication and the computers, and the roll of the telecommunications as

the media to communicate and to manage information quickly.

3. Develop the basic technology related to the telecommunications.

4. Identify communication ways using the four basic forms of

telecommunications: voice, data, image, and text.

5. Participate in a cultural exchange of information with students of other

countries using the computer as the communication media.

6. Develop the ability to use the available resources in the library as reference

sources and to enlarge their knowledge on the topic.

7. Demonstrate ability consistently to follow instructions, positive attitude toward

their work, cooperation, responsibility, good personal appearance and good

relationships with their partners and professors.

Weekly Assignments

Before each workshop students will complete certain assignments that will help

student to be prepared for the workshop activities. This assignment should be

presented en the language in which the workshop will be presented. A late

assignment will be penalized by discounting 5 points for workshop it is late.

Exam The exam will include all the material from workshop one to workshop four. This

exam will be in English.

Oral class presentation and written final project

From the first to the fourth workshop, students will work individual or in group in the

final project. Each group will work with a real or fictitious situation to develop and

present it to the class. The solution to this project will be handed in at the beginning

of workshop fifth and the group will give the oral presentation to the class. The

group will choose if the written project is in Spanish then the oral presentation will be

in English or vice versa. See appendix G.

Reflexive Diary

Students will write a reflexive diary at the end of workshops 1-4, to critically reflect

and write about the concepts, feelings and attitudes related to the learning process.

This must include an auto analysis and auto evaluation of performance. Each diary

will have a value of 25 points (Appendix F). The facilitator will indicate if this will be

handed in on paper or through e-mail.

Reports and case presentations

The facilitator will assign at least one individual or group work to present to class in

each workshop. The facilitator will choose the Topics from the text book or the

Internet and explain the basis of the exercise and the output expected from the

students. The facilitator will combine class participation, attendance and the

individual or group reports and presentation to give the 20 points in each workshop.




Description of course policies

1. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. If the Facilitator excuses an

absence, the student must make up for all presentations, papers, or other

assignments due on the date of the absence. The Facilitator will have the final

decision on approval of absences. He/she reserves the right to accept or

reject assignments past due, and to adjust the student’s grade accordingly.

2. Oral presentations and special activities cannot be remade. If the student

provides a valid and verifiable excuse (Ex. medical or from a court), he/she

will be summoned for a written test on the activity in which he/she did not

attend.

3. The course is conducted in an accelerated format and requires that students

prepare in advance for each workshop according to the course module. Each

workshop requires at least ten hours of preparation.

4. It is expected that all written work will be solely that of the student and should

not be plagiarized. That is, the student must be the author of all work

submitted. All quoted or paraphrased material must be properly cited, with

credit given to its author or publisher. It should be noted that plagiarized

writings are easily detectable and students should not risk losing credit for

material that is clearly not their own.

5. If the Facilitator makes changes to the study guide, such changes should be

discussed with the students during the first workshop. Changes agreed upon

should be indicated in writing and given to the students and to the program

administrator.

6. The facilitator will establish the means and way of contact with the students.

7. The use of cellular phones is prohibited during sessions.

8. Children or family members are not allowed to the classrooms.

9. Workshops will be facilitated in English and Spanish in alternate days, in

keeping with the format established in this module. Students may interact

and ask questions in the language of their preference, but generally it is

expected that they use the language of the specific assignment. Each course

will have an equal balance of Spanish and English usage.




10. All students are subject to the policies regarding behavior in the university

community established by the institution and in this course.

11. In group works, except under exceptional circumstances, it will be considered

that all the members of the group perform work and thus they will be

evaluated equally.

12. The written works and assignments will be turned on that assigned date in

their entirety.

Teaching Philosophy and Methodology This course is grounded in the learning theory of Constructivism. Constructivism

is a philosophy of learning founded on the premise that, by reflecting on our

experiences, we construct our own understanding of the world in which we live.

Each of us generates our own “rules” and “mental models,” which we use to

make sense of our experiences. Learning, therefore, is simply the process of

adjusting our mental models to accommodate new experiences. As teachers, our

focus is on making connections between facts and fostering new understanding in

students. We will also attempt to tailor our teaching strategies to student responses

and encourage students to analyze, interpret and predict information.

There are several guiding principles of constructivism:

1. Learning is a search for meaning. Therefore, learning must start with the

issues around which students are actively trying to construct meaning.

2. Meaning requires understanding wholes as well as parts. And parts must be

understood in the context of wholes. Therefore, the learning process focuses

on primary concepts, not isolated facts.

3. In order to teach well, we must understand the mental models that students

use to perceive the world and the assumptions they make to support those

models.

4. The purpose of learning is for an individual to construct his or her own

meaning, not just memorize the "right" answers and regurgitate someone

else's meaning. Since education is inherently interdisciplinary, the only

valuable way to measure learning is to make the assessment part of the

learning process, ensuring it provides students with information on the quality

of their learning.

5. Evaluation should serve as a self-analysis tool.

6. Provide tools and environments that help learners interpret the multiple

perspectives of the world.

7. Learning should be internally controlled and mediated by the learner.

Actividades

1. Presentación de los estudiantes y del(a) facilitador(a). El(La) facilitador(a)

podrá seleccionar y usar una dinámica de presentación de acuerdo a la

cantidad de estudiantes y a su estilo particular. Se sugiere el uso de alguna

dinámica para facilitar la integración del grupo y la preparación del mismo

para la experiencia de aprendizaje.

2. Presentación de los objetivos generales del curso y específicos de cada

taller, los recursos impresos y electrónicos disponibles para el logro de los

mismos, así como los criterios de presentación y el método de evaluación del

estudiante. El(la) facilitador(a) debe permitir al participante que se exprese

libremente acerca del sistema de evaluación.

4. Discusión sobre las tareas asignadas antes del taller.

5. El(la) facilitador(a) usando una presentación electrónica, abundará en los

Telecomunicaciones es realmente parte de su vida diaria. Use la forma del

Anejo A, correspondiente a la actividad 1. Los estudiantes podrán encontrar

información en el texto, en Internet o utilizar sus conocimientos personales.

El facilitador decidirá si deben presentar los resultados a la clase. Tiempo

aproximado para esta actividad 20 minutos.

7. Discusión en pequeños grupos de 2-4 estudiantes sobre las preguntas de

discusión del Anejo A. Cada grupo preparará una mini presentación de 5-10

minutos para la clase sobre el tema asignado por el facilitador.

8. Discusión en pequeños grupos de 2-4 estudiantes sobre: Las actividades 2 y

3 del ANEJO A , de acuerdo al tiempo restante en el taller y siguiendo el

criterio del facilitador. Los estudiantes podrán encontrar información en el

texto, en Internet o utilizar sus conocimientos personales. El facilitador

decidirá si deben presentar los resultados a la clase. Tiempo aproximado para

esta actividad 20 minutos

developed any MANs. A good place to start is your public library. If your community

Making Network Choices

Your friend Alice has decided to start a small business from her home. She is using

a loft over her garage as office space, and she currently has three PCs, a printer,

and a scanner, she has two part time employees. Even though this is only a small

business, Alice noticed some conflicts in the way she and her staff have to use the

PCs. The printer is hooked up to Computer A, so any time any’

one wants to print a file, it has to be copied to disk and then copied to Computer A to

be printed — disturbing whoever is working on Computer A. The scanner is hooked

up to Computer B, which means that the scans stay in that computer. But sometimes

the scans are needed for desktop publishing on Computer C. and the scans are

often very big—too big, sometimes, to fit on one disk to be carried to Computer C.

Alice can see she’ll have even more problems as her business grows. She asks you

to help her solve some at these problems. -

Consider Alice’s needs and her present equipment and propose a network solution

for her.

Network Solutions

You are in charge at network solutions for the Quadrex Corporation. a growing

company currently housed on one floor of on office building. Quadrex runs an

Ethernet star topology LAN system to handle its 30 workstations.

Recently, with space on the floor becoming cramped. Quadrex has looked into

taking over space in the floor below that will be vacated in the next month. The




space is already wired for a Token Rinq LAN system serving 15 workstations.

The Operations Manager has o number of questions for you to answer:

1. Should we get rid of both the Ethernet and the Token Ring networks and install a

brand new system to cover both floors?

2. Can our current Ethernet system communicate with the Token Ring system

downstairs? How?

3. What kinds of changes would we need to make to our network to combine the two

entrar al sistema del BBS.

4. Si el BBS ofrece archivos para descargar. Revise los archivos y escoga una que

le interese, cuidadosamente anote el tamaño del archivo antes de bajarlo.




5. Siga las instrucciones de la pantalla para descargar un archivo. Seleccionar el

protocolo de transferencia de archivos de su programa de

telecomunicaciones.

6. Inicie la transferencia de archivos y monitoree el progreso de descargar el

archivo.

7. Cuando termine de bajar el archivo, deje un mensaje al administrador del foro

agradeciéndoles que le hallan permitido navegar en su BBS. Luego salga

de la pagina principal (log off).

Proyecto Final

El estudiante seleccionará un problema real o ficticio para ser resuelto siguiendo los

puntos más importantes vistos durante el curso. El estudiante investigará los

Introducción a las Telecomunicaciones de una empresa, revisará las necesidades

de sus usuarios y formulará las correspondientes recomendaciones para mantener

el sistema existente, cambio o una combinación de 2 o más Introducción de

tecnología de las Telecomunicaciones. El estudiante proveerá las

recomendaciones para establecer los estándares y optimizar el uso de las

Telecomunicaciones para la compañía de su selección. La aprobación del proyecto

seleccionado por los estudiantes es a criterio del facilitador. Es necesario que el

estudiante siempre sepa decir con precisión cuántos y cuáles son los datos del

problema, y cuántos y cuáles son los resultados.

El estudiante preparará el trabajo escrito con una hoja de portada, la descripción del

problema y la explicación de la lógica seguida para el desarrollo del problema y la

conclusión.

Nota: El grupo escogerá si el trabajo escrito es en español la presentación oral debe

ser en inglés o viceversa

KeyTerms Windows Definition

Application Software Software that enables you to focus on completing some type of task or producing a document.

Backward Compatibility

Ensures that you can keep your current computer system, when upgrading to a new version of the same operating system, without having to purchase a new computer or upgrade your existing components.

BootROM The Read-only memory device that the Macintosh computer uses to boot from, and includes startup and diagnostic routines that provide hardware support for the Macintosh operating system, which it loads from disk.

Command Line Interface (CLI)

Interact with the operating system by typing commands as text strings.

Computer Virus A program that gains access to your computer system and then either interferes with the performance of your computer or damages it.

Device Driver A small program file that works in conjunction with the operating system to communicate with, and manage the use of, a specific hardware device.

Dialog Box Includes options and settings for completing an operation. You can select the options you want to use or verify the current settings before you complete an operation.

Docucentric Allows you to locate and open a file that contains the document or data you want to use, and then the operating system opens the application you originally used to produce that document or the application currently associated with that type of file.

Dual-boot Configuration

In this configuration, your computer has two operating systems, and you can choose the operating system that you want to use during booting.

File System The means by which the operating system keeps track of all the folders and files on your computer.

Frames Separate display areas, comparable to Web browser frames, within independent windows.

Graphical User Interface (GUI)

Pronounced “gooey,” it combines a number of features that help provide a visually rich working environment, as well as on-screen clues that simplify interaction with the operating system.

Graphics Mode Display of user interface information in a variety of fonts and colors, as well as graphic images; requires far more memory than text mode.

Icon A graphical symbol or picture that appears on your screen that allows you to navigate to the location or




service that it represents by clicking on it. Kernel The core components of an operating system that reside

in memory at all times and that provide basic services. Menu Contains a list of options (or commands) for performing

specific operations, such as creating a new folder or opening a file.

Multitasking The simultaneous or concurrent use of more than one application.

Multithreading The execution of multiple threads within the same application.

Operating Environment

A software product that performs most of the same functions as an operating system, but is not involved in booting, configuring, or customizing the computer system.

Operating System Software that manages all the basic processes in a computer, coordinates the interaction of hardware and software so that all the components work together, and supports other software.

Parameter Options or specific information that is transmitted along with a command which effects the execution of the command.

Peer-to-peer Network

A simple type of network in which each computer can access other computers to which they are connected and share hard disk drives and peripherals, as well as software, folders, and files.

Plug and Play A feature that allows an operating system to automatically detect, install support for, and configure a hardware device during booting.

Power-On Self-Test (POST)

Software that checks for the presence of hardware devices needed to start your computer, and verifies that they are working properly.

Server A high-performance computer that uses a network operating system to manage a computer network.

Source Code The program code in its original form. Syntax The format used to correctly request execution of a

command. Correct syntax includes the correct character string, punctuation, and termination character applicable to the command of interest.

Text Mode Displays only text-based characters, symbols, and a small set of graphics characters.

Thread An execution unit of program code which shares resources with other threads in a given process.

Volatile A characteristic of RAM, meaning it depends on the availability of power to retain its contents.

windows Work areas on the screen in which the operating system displays the applications or the contents of the folders.

Bitmapped graphic An image represented by a pattern of pixels

JPG (or JPEG) A file format that compresses the image by removing some of the detail in an image

Keyboard shortcuts Combinations of keys that perform operations that would otherwise require multiple menu commands

Modem A hardware device that enables your computer to transmit and receive data over telephone lines

Multiuser operating system

Allows more than one person to work on the same computer system concurrently

Navigate The process of locating and opening drives and folders on your computer until you locate the drive or the folder where you want to work

Notification area Area to the right of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen that contains the current time and icons for programs that are opened when you boot your computer and operate in the background

Pixel One or more dots that are treated as one unit on the monitor, each one composed of a Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) component that blends together with other dots to form a single color.

Property sheet A sheet within a tabbed dialog box that contains a group of related settings

Readme files Files that contain additional Help information that was compiled just prior to releasing the software product.

Recycle Bin Stores only files that you delete from your hard disk drive until it is emptied.
