Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva! To coordinate its efforts towards the production of Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020 (FRA2020), FAO is conducting a series of regional and sub-regional workshops aimed at training national correspondents, enhancing and harmonizing data collection, as well as analysis and reporting capacities. These training sessions also aim to give these correspondents an opportunity to effectively build knowledge and to interact and share experiences on forest-related reporting. (In English and French) As part of a South-South cooperation plan for forest monitoring, FAO and the UN-REDD Programme are supporting the Virtual Center of Excellence on Forest Monitoring (CEVMF), a Mesoamerican institution based in Mexico, in the launch of a training programme that combines digital education platforms and tutorials with discussion forums to create greenhouse gas inventories for the agricultural sector. (In Spanish) At the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) in Nairobi at the end of August, the Forest Farm Facility (FFF) co-organized a side event: ‘Sustainable woodfuel value chains in Sub-Saharan

Africa’. There, it was emphasized that woodfuel can be a sustainable source of energy if strong supporting policies and good governance, including within Forest and Farm Producer Organizations (FFPOs), are involved in promoting its sustainable production. (In English) FAO is collaborating with government institutions at country and provincial levels in Pakistan to restore, improve and manage the country’s chilgoza pine forests. Chilgoza pine is an important component of the unique ecosystem of the dry temperate ecological zone and has the potential to contribute billions of rupees to the economy by providing non-timber forest products and woodfuel, and by regulating water. (In English) At a workshop on green forest jobs held in Geneva this month, 30 experts from about 20 countries heard about the variety of job opportunities created by the green economy in areas such as recreation, leisure and sports, ecotherapy, urban forestry, as well as the control of pests, fire and disease. (In English) Finally, we want to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in two major upcoming FAO events. The first, the 1st World Forum on Urban Forests, will take place in the Italian city of Mantua 28 November to 01 December 2018; and the second, Asia-Pacific Forestry Week 2019, will be held in Incheon, Republic of Korea 17-21 June 2019. En el evento se enfatizó que el combustible de madera puede ser una fuente de energía sostenible, siempre que unas sólidas políticas gobernativas y una buena gestión, incluso dentro de las Organizaciones de Productores Forestales y Agrícolas (FFPO por sus siglas en inglés), apoyen y promuevan su producción sostenible. (En inglés) En Pakistán, la FAO está colaborando con instituciones gubernamentales a nivel nacional y provincial para restaurar, mejorar y gestionar de manera sostenible los bosques de pinos chilgoza (Pinus gerardiana) del país. El pino chilgoza es un componente importante del ecosistema único de la zona ecológica de clima templado seco y tiene el potencial de contribuir a la economía con miles de millones de rupias, al proporcionar productos forestales no maderables y combustibles de madera, y al regular el agua. (En inglés) En un taller sobre trabajos verdes en el sector forestal realizado en Ginebra este mes, 30 expertos de unos 20 países participaron en el debate acerca de la variedad de oportunidades de empleo creadas por la economía verde en áreas como recreación, ocio y deportes, ecoterapia, silvicultura urbana, así como en el control de plagas, incendios y enfermedades de las plantas. L'événement a souligné que le bois-énergie peut être une source d'énergie durable, à condition que des politiques gouvernementales saines et une bonne gestion, y compris au sein des organisations de producteurs forestiers et agricoles (FFPO), soutiennent et promeuvent leur production durable. (En anglais) Au Pakistan, la FAO collabore avec des institutions gouvernementales aux niveaux national et provincial pour restaurer, améliorer et gérer durablement les forêts de pins de Chilgoza (Pinus gerardiana) du pays. Millions of families around the region depend on forests for their livelihoods and food security. Forests also help to regulate water flows, host biodiversity and play a crucial role in soil stabilization and the climate of Caribbean SIDS. In order to ensure the sustainable management of this significant natural resource, countries in the region should have detailed information on how their forests are used. Green jobs grow in the forest FAO News Europe and Central Asia 17/09/18 The green economy is creating new job opportunities in the forest sector in a variety of areas, such as recreation, leisure and sports, ecotherapy, urban forestry, and the control of pests, fire and disease. The Asia-Pacific Forestry Week (APFW2019) will be held in Songdo Convensia Convention

Center, Incheon, Republic of Korea on 17-21 June 2019. It will be one of the largest and most

important forestry gatherings in the Asia-Pacific region in 2019. "Forests for peace and well-

being" is the overall theme of APFW2019, which reflects the positive dimensions of forestry and

suggests the need to proactively integrate forestry into the wider context of environment, society,

and sustainable development, under which economic, social, human and cultural dimensions are

considered in a holistic manner.

The Korea Forest Service (KFS) will host the event together with the Food and Agriculture

Organization of the United Nations (FAO). We encourage participation and support of partner

organizations and collaborators including government, civil society, research, academia, and the

private sector.

Environment Minister concludes nationwide tour Foroyaa.gm 17/09/18 The Minister of Forestry and Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources last Thursday concluded a five day intensive nationwide tour of four Regions. The tour was organized by the Ministry of Environment and line departments, in collaboration with large scale sustainable Ecosystem Based Adaptation (EBA), Action Against Desertification and CBSDFM project, under the Food and Agricultural Organization FAO. FAO-AfDB alliance aims to boost investments to fight hunger in Africa IISD 11/09/18 FAO and AfDB signed an agreement for a strategic alliance to enhance investments in food security, nutrition, social protection, agriculture, forestry, fisheries and rural development in Africa. The two institutions aim to improve AfDB's investment operations, increase private public partnerships, improve the investment climate and portfolio performance, and joint resources mobilization. The government of Pakistan with the help of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a project to restore, improve and manage the chilgoza pine (pine nuts) forests in the country. Green jobs grow in the forest Modern Diplomacy 18/09/18 Until recently, forest jobs were mostly associated with traditional silviculture and timber harvesting activities. However, the potential for the creation of new job opportunities is now enhancing all forest ecosystem functions. Progress on national forest monitoring systems for REDD+: A win-win for forests and climate action IISD 28/08/18 The progress in REDD+ MRV and the associated National Forest Monitoring Systems suggest a transformation in national forest monitoring capacity, which is enabling forest data collection, analysis, and generation of national maps and statistics like never before. Improvements in the accuracy and transparency of NFMS can be achieved by maintaining support, enhancing existing capacities, and encouraging countries to improve their data and methods. Norway Norway builds world's tallest timber tower, and it's both environmentally friendly and fire resistant The Straits Times 05/09/18 Norway has completed the frame of the world's tallest timber building, which is being lauded for being environmentally friendly and fire resistant. The Mjos Tower, which is situated near and named after a lake located about 100km north of Oslo, saw its last beam hoisted by a crane this week. United Kingdom Forest size of Yorkshire must be planted for UK to meet its climate targets, scientists warn The Independent 12/09/18 Huge fields of crops and tracts of forest should be planted across the British countryside to suck carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, according to a new report.
