EN LA ASAMBLEA GENERAL, que celebramos el pasado día 11 de junio, se sometieron a aprobación yfueron aprobadas las Cuentas del ejercicio económico del 2015, los presupuestos del 2016, la memo-ria de actividades de 2015 y el proyecto de actividades 2016. Hay que congratularse por el visto bueno a la gestión económica y hay que aceptar la decisión de laAsamblea de rechazar la propuesta de sanciones contra cuatro socios, miembros de la Junta Directivaanterior a la nuestra. Desde estas líneas reitero mi respeto absoluto, y el de toda la Junta directiva, hacia las decisiones toma-das en Asamblea, que es el principal órgano de gobierno del Club. Dicho esto quiero expresar públicamente mi inquietud en torno a la baja participación de asociados encitas importantes como la mencionada. Me preocupa y mucho que a esta última convocatoria respondiera un número tan reducido de socioscuando, y creo que no peco de alarmista, es evidente que el Club se encuentra a pocos meses de dis-tancia de una de las más importantes encrucijadas de su historia. A nadie mínimamente informado se le oculta que las dificultades burocráticas, políticas, jurídicas yadministrativas han contribuido a ralentizar el proceso de la nueva Concesión. Ha sido un proceso tor-tuoso, es verdad, pero de nada sirve lamentarse ante lo que ya es una historia irreversible. Ello no impi-de, sin embargo, que nos acerquemos de forma preocupante a la fecha límite de 2018, año en que(según la Administración) vence el período de vigencia de la antigua Concesión, con lo que esto suponede vencimiento de todos los derechos adquiridos. Siendo, como es, cierto que estamos en el proceso final de una larga negociación para encontrar unafórmula de adaptación y un Canon económicamente soportable, también lo es que se hará necesarioencontrar asimismo una nueva fórmula de gestión del Club, a partir del momento en que, en 2018, elreloj (según establece ahora mismo la Administración) se ponga de nuevo a cero para todos los socios. En este sentido quiero recordar que, en unos meses, tendremos que someter a la aprobación de laAsamblea decisiones importantísimas que afectan a intereses colectivos, pero, de alguna manera, tam-bién personales de los socios. Habrá que decidir qué modelo de Club queremos y qué fórmula de gestión debe ser la más adecuada.Y también habrá que pronunciarse sobre el abanico de alternativas posibles que está negociando laJunta Directiva con las Autoridades y que, tras rigurosos análisis y estudios de viabilidad económicos,deberán someterse al criterio de todos los asociados.Son decisiones trascendentales que requieren información precisa, objetiva y no contaminada. Es porello que considero urgente que los socios se impliquen más en los temas colectivos y tomen concienciade los riesgos potenciales que se pueden presentar en un futuro inmediato.Desde estas líneas hago una llamada general y les emplazo encarecidamente a involucrarse más conlos temas que nos afectan a todos. El futuro de esta gran “Casa” depende en parte del dictamen finalde la Administración pública, pero también de quienes, hoy por hoy, somos socios del Club y deseamosseguir siéndolo en el futuro.

AT THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, held on 11 June, the accounts for the 2015 financialyear, the budget for 2016, the annual report for 2015 and the scheduled activities for2016 were presented and ultimately approved. We must celebrate the nod to financial management and accept the decision of theAssembly to reject the proposed sanctions against four members of the previous Board. I would like to reiterate my absolute respect, and that of the entire Board, for the deci-sions taken at the Assembly, which is the main governing body of the Club. That said, I would also like to publicly air my concern at the low participation of mem-bers at important events such as the above. It deeply worries me that so few members responded to the call to this meeting when,without wanting to sound alarmist, the Club is clearly just a few months away from oneof the most important turning points in its history. Nobody minimally informed is unaware of the fact that bureaucratic, political, legal andadministrative difficulties have slowed down the process of the new concession. It hasbeen a tortuous process, that's for sure, but it is futile to moan and groan about what isalready an irreversible event. However, this doesn't hide the fact that we are getting dis-turbingly closer to the 2018 deadline, when (according to the government) the term ofthe former concession will expire, which also entails the expiration of all rights acquired. We are, as we all know, in the final stretch of lengthy talks to find a way to adapt and totake on financially bearable fees, which means it will also be necessary to find a newmanagement model for the Club, from the very moment - in 2018 - when the clock (asestablished right now by the government) is reset for all members. In this regard, I'd like to remind everyone that in a few months' time we will have torequest the approval of some extremely important decisions affecting the collective, butto a certain extent also personal, interests of the members. We will have to decide which model of Club we want and which managementmodel is the most appropriate. And we'll also need to make a decision on the range ofpossible alternatives that the Board is negotiating with the authorities and which, afterrigorous financial analysis and feasibility studies, should be subject to the criteriaof all members.These are far-reaching decisions that require accurate, objective and untainted informa-tion. That's why I believe it is a pressing matter for members to engage more in collec-tive issues and take heed of the potential risks that may arise in the immediate future.I'd like to use this letter to make a general call to all members and urge you to engagemore in the issues that affect us all. The future of this great Club depends partly on thefinal opinion of the government, but also on those who right now are members of theClub and wish to remain so in the future.

En agosto se cumple el segundo año demandato de la nueva Junta Directiva pre-sidida por Alan Ponte. Veinticuatromeses de transición a la espera de tresresoluciones importantes por parte de laAdministración Pública que afectan delleno al presente y el futuro del Club. Hagamos un repaso:

1º CONCESIÓN ADMINISTRATIVA. Sinlugar a dudas la cuestión más importanteque afecta al futuro del Club y a todos sussocios. Es un tema que lleva años nego-ciándose con distintas administraciones,de diferentes colores políticos. Se trata de un proceso muy complejo que,

por distintas razones burocráticas y legales,se ha ido alargando en el tiempo y queahora parce encontrarse, finalmente, en elúltimo o penúltimo tramo de negociación. Como se sabe, nuestro Club, junto al dePuerto Portals y el de Can Picafort son losúltimos en Baleares que no han resueltotodavía este tema. En nuestro caso, toda vez que Ports IBasumió la sentencia del ContenciosoAdministrativo favorable a las tesis delClub sobre los criterios de Canon y valo-ración, se está ahora en la recta final delproceso de negociación para fijar el pro-cedimiento de adaptación que fijará unnuevo cálculo de valoración y nuevo

canon. Una premisa ineludible para con-seguir la nueva concesión en condicioneseconómicamente razonables para unClub como el nuestro, sin ánimo de lucro.

2º AMPLIACIÓN. Al mismo tiempo, espreciso señalar que la comisión balear deMedio Ambiente, dependiente del Governbalear, emitió en mayo 2016 una resolu-ción mediante la que decretó el archivopor caducidad del procedimiento de eva-luación ambiental del proyecto de amplia-ción del Club. El motivo esgrimido por la comisiónambiental es que el Club no había presen-tado la documentación de impacto medio

ambiental necesaria para seguir adelantecon la tramitación administrativa. La documentación de impacto medioambiental de este proyecto, responsabili-dad de la anterior Junta Directiva, no fuepresentada por la Junta actual al valorar lainoportunidad de hacerlo estando, comoestá, pendiente la obtención de la nuevaconcesión administrativa del Club. De hecho, este proyecto no supone amplia-ción alguna de las actuales instalacionessino un mejor aprovechamiento de la esco-llera con la finalidad de poder habilitar enella nuevos amarres de embarcacionespara los meses de verano. Fuentes de la comisión de Medio Ambientehan señalado que, en la práctica, el archi-vo del procedimiento de evaluaciónambiental supondrá la paralización delproyecto, que deberá iniciar de nuevo latramitación si el Club todavía está intere-sado en su ejecución.

3º CAMPO DE BOYAS. El tercer temaadministrativo que está pendiente deresolución es el proyecto de gestión de uncampo de boyas anexo al Club y la gestiónde un pantalán flotante en Albercuix quese formuló, atendiendo a una solicitud, eneste sentido, formulada al Club por laAdministración. El proyecto técnico de regulación de fonde-os se presentó a raíz de una petición expre-sa de PortsIB, organismo interesado en laregulación de los fondeos incontrolados enla bahía. Durante la anterior legislatura,PortsIB mostró interés en que el Club asu-miera la gestión de la concesión de estasnuevas instalaciones, al igual que se hahecho con éxito en otros puertos comoPuerto de Andratx, Sant Antoni, etc.En el Club se espera que antes de fin deaño la Asamblea de socios pueda consi-derar estos asuntos y se materialicen deuna u otra forma.

ASAMBLEA DE SOCIOSComo estaba previsto, el pasado día 11de junio se celebró la Asamblea GeneralExtraordinaria en la que se sometieron aaprobación la Cuentas del Ejercicio 2015y los Presupuestos previstos para el2016, con la correspondiente Memoriade actividades de ambos ejercicios.La Asamblea aprobó, por unanimidad, lasCuentas del 2015 y los Presupuestos2016 y también fue aprobada, con unsolo voto en contra, la memoria de activi-dades de ambos ejercicios.Por otra parte, la Asamblea rechazó la pro-puesta de sanción a cuatro miembros de laanterior Junta Directiva, expedientados por«hacer un uso incorrecto y haber incumpli-do los estatutos sociales». La propuesta desanción a los cuatro expedientados consis-tía en la suspensión de sus derechos porun período de dos años, su inhabilitación yuna multa de 1.500 euros.

CHARLA SOBRE DIABETESEl pasado viernes 20 de mayo, JacoboNavarro, socio del club y fundador de Lemurdiabético, dio una charla de concienciaciónsobre la diabetes a los monitores y regatistasde la sección de vela. En su exposición hablóde esta enfermedad y los distintos tipos quehay, su impacto en la sociedad actual y des-arrolló unos conceptos básicos para que losmonitores y deportistas sepan cómo actuarfrente a una hipoglucemia o una hipergluce-mia. La charla se completó con una partepráctica donde los chicos se hicieron medicio-nes de azúcar y se explicó de qué forma sedebe inyectar a insulina. Mediante su presen-tación Jacobo demostró que la diabetes no esun obstáculo a la hora de realizar deporte,

sino un complemento en la victoria. Este es ellema de Lemur diabético.

Los alumnos de la Escuela de Vela, dirigidapor Diego Riera, y los socios del Club hansido los más activos en la campaña derecogida de pilas usadas llevada a cabo enel marco del concurso “Ponte las pilas yrecicla”, al depositar 102 kilos de estos resi-duos en los contenedores que Ecopilas ins-taló durante los meses de julio y agosto. Un total de 54 clubes adscritos al progra-ma de educación medioambientalGrímpola Ecomar han participado en laprimera edición de “Ponte las pilas y

August marks the second year in officeof the new Board chaired by Alan Ponte.Twenty-four months of transition await-ing three important government resolu-tions which will have a huge impact onthe present and future of the Club. Let’s have a look at them:

1. GOVERNMENT CONCESSION.Undoubtedly the most important issueaffecting the future of the Club and allits members. This is an issue that hasbeen under negotiation for years now,with different governments from theacross the entire political spectrum. It’s a very complex process which, forvarious bureaucratic and legal reasons,has been dragged out over time andnow finally seems to be in the final (orpenultimate) stage of negotiation. As you know, our Club, together with

Gracias a esta iniciativa,se ha recogido más de una tonelada depilas usadas, alrededor de 50.000 uni-dades, que han sido recicladas correcta-mente, evitando que lleguen al mar. Las pilas fueron depositadas en los recopila-dores que Ecopilas, líder en recogida y reci-claje de pilas de nuestro país, y la FundaciónEcomar instalaron en los clubes náuticos,escuelas de vela y marinas y otros centrosdedicados a la náutica de toda Españaadheridos a la iniciativa Grímpola Ecomar.Algunos clubes solicitaron más contenedo-res a mitad del concurso, debido al éxito decolaboración. Según, José Pérez, presidente de Ecopilas,“mediante esta campaña, hemos tratado depromover la protección de nuestras costas ydel entorno marino, a través de la recogida yel reciclaje de pilas y baterías usadas. Elexcelente resultado de participación, obteni-do en colaboración con la FundaciónEcomar, demuestra que el contacto con elmar es un espacio ideal para sensibilizaracerca de la importancia de contribuir alreciclaje de pilas para preservar y seguir dis-frutando de estos entornos”. Puerto Portals and Can Picafort, are thelast ones in the Balearics to still havethis issue unresolved. In our case, ever since Ports IB accept-ed the civil court ruling in favour of theClub’s thesis on fee criteria and valua-tion, we have been in the final stretch ofa negotiation process to establish theadaptation procedure that will calculatethe valuation and new fees. A must tosecure the new concession in economi-cally feasible conditions for a non-profitClub like ours.

2. EXPANSION. Meanwhile, it should benoted that the Balearic EnvironmentCommittee, part of the BalearicGovernment, issued a resolution in May2016 which filed the expiration of theenvironmental assessment procedure forthe Club’s expansion project. The reason given by the Committee is thatthe Club had not submitted the necessaryenvironmental impact documentation toproceed with the administrative process. This documentation for the project,responsibility of the former Board, wasnot presented by the current Board afterassessing the inappropriateness of doingso, given that the award of the newadministrative concession is still pending. In fact, this project does not entail the

expansion as such of existing facilities,but rather a better use of the quay toprovide new berths for boats in the sum-mer months. Sources at the Environment Committeehave pointed out that, in practice, the fil-ing of the environmental assessmentprocedure will bring the project to a halt,and that the process will have to startall over again if the Club is still interest-ed in carrying out the project.

3. BUOY FIELD. The third administrativeissue still pending is the project for abuoy field next to the Club and a floatingpontoon in Albercuix, which was formu-lated in response to a request made bythe government to the Club. The anchoring regulation project wassubmitted following upon request fromPortsIB, which is interested in regulatinguncontrolled anchoring in the Bay.During the previous legislature, PortsIBshowed interest in the Club managingthe concession of these new facilities,as has been done successfully in otherports such as Puerto de Andratx, SantAntoni in Ibiza, etc.The Club hopes that these issues canbe discussed at the members’ assemblybefore the end of the year and that theymaterialise in some form or another.

MEMBERS’ EGMAs planned, the Extraordinary GeneralMeeting was held on 11 June to approvethe 2015 accounts and 2016 budget,while also presenting the annual reportsfor both financial years.The meeting unanimously approved the2015 accounts and 2016 budget, whilethe annual reports were passed withjust one vote against. Meanwhile, themeeting rejected the proposal for sanc-tions against four members of the pre-vious board of directors for “makingimproper use and failing to comply withthe by-laws”. The proposed penaltyagainst the four accused membersinvolved the suspension of their rightsfor a two-year period, their disqualifica-tion and a fine of 1,500 euros.

TALK ON DIABETESOn Friday 20 May, Jacobo Navarro, Club

member and founder of LemurDiabético, gave a talk on diabetesawareness to sailors and coaches fromthe sailing division. In his presentationhe spoke about the different types ofthis disease and its impact on today’ssociety, while also explaining basic con-cepts for the sailors and coaches toknow how to deal with hypoglycaemia orhyperglycaemia. The talk ended with apractical activity where everyone madesugar measurements and learnt howinsulin should be injected.With this presentation, Jacobo showedthat diabetes is not an obstacle to tak-ing part in sport, but instead a comple-ment to victory. This is the motto ofLemur Diabético.

Back in October, Theresa Zabell,Chairwoman of Fundación Ecomar, andJosé Pérez, Chairman of Ecopilas, awardedthe Club with the 2,000 euro prize for the“Let’s get recycling” contest. The cheque,which will be earmarked to buy material forthe Sailing School, was received by the Clubchairman, Alan Ponte. Students from the Sailing School, run byDiego Riera, and Club members were themost active participants in the battery col-lection campaign known as “Let’s getrecycling”, depositing 102 kilos of batter-ies in the containers that Ecopilas provid-ed during the months of July and August. A total of 54 clubs belonging to theGrímpola Ecomar environmental educa-tion programme took part in the first edi-tion of “Let’s get recycling”, which fostersenvironmentally-friendly best practices.Thanks to this initiative, over a ton of usedbatteries, or around 50,000 individualunits, were collected and appropriatelyrecycled, thereby preventing them fromending up in the sea. The batteries were deposited in the spe-

cial containers that Ecopilas, a leadingbattery collection and recycling project inSpain, and Fundación Ecomar installed inyacht clubs, sailing schools and marinasaround Spain that had signed up to theGrímpola Ecomar programme. Some clubseven asked for more containers halfwaythrough the contest, due to the huge suc-cess of the project. According to, José Pérez, Chairman ofEcopilas, “through this campaign we setout to encourage the protection of our

It’s great news that in justtwo months over the summer so many bat-teries were deposited in the special con-tainers and, as a result, did not end upcontaminating the marine environment.Thanks to Ecopilas for this cheque that willhelp the students of Real Club NáuticoPort de Pollença benefit from more andbetter material in the near future”. El verano pasado enviamos a dos de nuestras rega-tistas infantiles a todo un campeonato del mundo. Alacabar la regata habían hecho más pruebas queentrenos sobre un Cadete, un barco que desconocí-an. Así arranca el resumen de este año. El verano fue inmejorable, la escuela de vela fun-cionó perfectamente y pudo dar más de cuatro-cientos cursos al tiempo que organizaba la regataVerge del Carme para niños y el Cormorán paralos niños grandes. Los Flying Fifteens fueron pun-tuales s su cita veraniega con nosotros e hicieronseis regatas. Los chicos de Optimist y Láser 4.7 se fueron des-plazando a las distintas regatas que se organizanen los clubes de la isla apurando las últimas opor-tunidades para entrar en las regatas autonómicascerradas a los mejores del ranking pero, ay! elanticiclonazo que se instaló sobre nosotros y losnervios sólo dejaron clasificarse a una de nues-tras chicas, Juna Cabanellas. El extremo buen tiempo también penalizó lasregatas de crucero y los entrenos en la bahía.Despedíamos el año con una barbacoa y habien-do anulado la última prueba del año. El inviernose hizo largo mientras iban pasando las borrascasy enviábamos a los chicos de láser a Ibiza al cam-peonato de Baleares. Llego la primavera con latravesía a Ciutadella. Una salida espectacularfrente a la Victoria. Un bordo y espínakers arriba,borrachos de viento, directos a Menorca. la alternativa en nuestra bahía. Empezamos el resumen del año con un campeo-nato del mundo y acabamos con los que compitenpor primera vez. El señor De Mille tenía razón, hay que empezarcon algo grande e ir creciendo en acción.

Cecil B. DeMille said it with force about the cine-ma: "a film should start out with an earthquakeand work its way up to a climax". Last summer we sent two of our young sailors offto a major world championships. At the end of therace they had done more trials than training ses-sions on a Cadet, a dinghy they hadn't previouslysailed on. And so begins the summary of this year. The summer was excellent: the sailing schoolworked perfectly and held over four hundredcourses while also organising the Verge delCarme regatta for children and the Cormorán forteenagers. The Flying Fifteens once again sailedwith us over the summer, notching up a total ofsix races. September and October came and so the cruiserregattas returned to their usual schedule. Theseason kick-off was the Interclubs, with RCNPP

welcoming sailboats from Ciutadella, Colònia deSant Pere and even Palma. The Optimist and Laser 4.7 sailors regularly head-ed off to the various races staged at clubs on theisland, taking advantage of the final opportunitiesto enter the regional regattas for the top-rankedsailors, but, alas, the strong anticyclone thatplopped itself over us, combined with a certainamount of nerves, meant that only one of ourgirls, Juna Cabanellas, was able to qualify. The extremely good weather also castigated cruis-er racing and training sessions out on the Bay. Wesaid goodbye to 2015 with a barbecue and havingcancelled the final trial of the year. The winterwas long and while storms were passing over, wesent the Laser boys to the BalearicChampionships over in Ibiza. Spring arrived withthe crossing to Ciutadella, a spectacular start withthe Victoria. Spinnakers up and loads of windstraight to Menorca. There was also perfect weather for the kids in theTrofeo Stiu, the debut regatta for new sailors atthe Club. Mateo, Xisco, Diego, Xavier andMagdalena took a further step to becoming prosailors here in our Bay. We started the annual summary with the worldchampionships and rounded off with those com-peting for the first time. Mr. DeMille was right; you have to start withsomething big and keep on growing.

El pasado día 11 de diciembre, tras 16días, 19 horas, 41 minutos y 4 segundosde navegación oceánica, el socio delClub, Wihelm Klaas, a bordo de suHallberg-Rassy 54 "Bluewater Mooney"cruzaba la línea de meta de la ARC 2015entre Canarias y Santa Lucía en elCaribe. Resultó el ganador de la regataen la clase D. El HR “Bluewater Mooney”, diseñado porGerman Frers, fue el barco más rápidode su categoría, tanto en tiempo realcomo en compensado. El último día de regata cubrieron 194millas náuticas, 4 por debajo de las 200obtenidas en anteriores jornadas.Vientos portantes frescos de intensidadmuy variable y borrascas constantes obli-garon a la tripulación a estar en “pie deguerra” la mayor parte del tiempo,demostrando que la ARC puede ser una

regata dura y exigente para las tripula-ciones más competitivas.Con este triunfo, el “Bluewater Mooney”ha demostrado que la victoria que yaobtuvo en la ARC Europa 2015 Divisiónde crucero de clase A y en la ARC 2010,clase D, no fue algo casual.Esta es la tercera vez que un Hallberg-Rassy 54 gana su categoría en el ARC.Como si esto no fuera suficiente, hayotros dos Hallberg-Rassys ganaron el 3erlugar en sus respectivas categorías; el48 "Alpaire" de la categoría F, y la"Cavatina" 42F en la categoría G.También en el ARC Plus otra Hallberg-Rassy 54, "Anorak" ganó su categoría.En buenas manos y con buenos materia-les los Hallberg Rassy están demostran-do sus grandes cualidades como cruce-ros cómodos y rápidos, ideales paracubrir largas distancias en poco tiempo.

XXX ANIVERSARIO ARCPartiendo de Las Palmas con rumbo a lacaribeña isla de Santa Lucía, cada añose congrega una importante flota develeros para participar en esta regata delAtlántico organizada por la Atlantic Rallyfor Cruisers (ARC). En esta edición, la número 30 de su histo-ria, han participado 254 barcos y 1.200tripulantes. Todo un récord. Toman parte en ella armadores exper-tos, como Wihelm Klaas pero tambiénnavegantes que se estrenan en una tra-vesía oceánica. La organización ofreceapoyo, soporte y experiencia pero exigea la vez determinadas condiciones bási-cas de seguridad a los barcos partici-pantes. Aunque cada capitán es el máxi-mo responsable de su barco, los organi-zadores ofrecen seminarios instructivose instrucciones de seguridad, tanto

WORLD ARCTerminada la etapa entre Las Palmas ySanta Lucía, la ARC organiza además laWorld ARC alrededor del mundo. Una cir-cunnavegación global de 26.000 millasnáuticas. Un viaje inolvidable planteadocomo un tipo de navegación de cruceroen “conserva”, con la seguridad y la tran-quilidad siempre “relativa” que ofrece lacompañía. No hace falta hacerla comple-ta ya que los organizadores te permitenuna circunnavegación completa o nave-gar una parte del recorrido. Fresh and very variable downwindsand constant squalls kept the crew ontheir toes at all times, proving that theARC can be a tough and demanding rallyfor the most competitive crews. Onceshoreside, the organisers deal with redtape, help out with provisioning andchandlery needs, and also make surethat participants take full advantage oftheir time on dry land.

“Aquitat III” de César Villegas, vencedor absolutode la XIX Regata Bahía de Pollença

La XIX edición de la regata Bahía de Pollença –Trofeo Alfonso Echegaray, Regata de Altura, se dis-putó a mitad del mes de mayo entre Barcelona yel Port de Pollença. Como es tradicional, estaregata se celebra en fin de semana, de maneraque el primer día, viernes, tiene lugar la reuniónde Patrones. En esta ocasión los armadores con-taron con la experta colaboración de TomásMolina, meteorólogo de TV3, quien hizo una pre-dicción de las condiciones de meteo que iban aencontrarse a lo largo de la ruta.Sobre las seis de la tarde se dió la salida. Zarparon26 embarcaciones desde el CM Port Ginesta conrumbo al RCN Port Pollença, con un viento de com-ponente Sur Oeste de entre 10 – 12 nudos. Unaparte de la flota arrumbó hacia el Golfo de SantJordi, donde al entrar la madrugada, el viento roló aOeste para establecerse finalmente el NO. El restode la flota, navegó rumbo directo con un SO-O de 15

The 19th edition of the offshore Bahía dePollença–Trofeo Alfonso Echegaray race was held inmid-May between Barcelona and Port de Pollença. Asis traditional, this regatta takes place over a weekendand kicks off with a skippers’ briefing on the Friday.This year, the sailors were joined by the expert TVweatherman Tomás Molina, who gave a detailed fore-cast of the weather conditions that they wouldencounter over the course.

The starting gun was fired at around six in theevening. A total of 26 boats set sail from CM PortGinesta en route to RCN Port Pollença, with a SWwind blowing at 10-12 knots. Part of the fleet head-ed towards the Golfo de Sant Jordi, where in theearly hours of the morning the wind changed to Wand ultimately NE. The rest of the fleet took a directcourse in a SW-W of between 15 and 22 knots. Some of the boats came across the lack of windthat Tomás Molina had announced during theweather briefing. The first three boats to cross thefinish line were: Audax Energía, a TP52 skippered byToni Guiu from RCM Barcelona; Aquitat III, a SunOdyssey 49 piloted by César Villegas from RCNBinibeca Vell; and Aixopluc III, a Dufour 40 withAntonio Martínez from Port Masnou at the helm.On the Saturday, once the fleet had tied up at theReal Club Náutico de Pollença, the official prize-givingceremony was held, which was attended by Iliana

Capllonch, Head of Tourism at Pollença Town Council;Andrés Nevado, Councillor for Port de Pollença; PepeEscalas, Chief Harbourmaster of Mallorca; AlanPonte, Chairman of RCN Port de Pollença; MateuDupuy, Deputy Chairman of RCN Port de Pollença,and Mª Antonia Echegaray, representing theEchegaray family. Afterwards, there was a fantasticwelcome barbecue for all the crew members thatlasted well into the night. The Bahía de Pollença is a leisurely mid-distancerace in which the fleet has to cross the Canal deMallorca towards Cabo Formentor. After nineteen edi-tions, it has become one of the most popular forMediterranean-based sailors. The regatta is organised by ANAM in collaborationwith CM Port Ginesta and RCN Port de Pollença, withthe support of Pollença Town Council.The race counts towards the 2016 ANAM OffshoreCircuit, along with the Ruta de la Sal, the Regata delDelta and the Ruta de la Tramuntana.

Amador Magraner gana el Gran Prix del AtlánticoEl Swan 44R “Carat”, con grímpola del RCNPort Pollença, del armador AmadorMagraner, se adjudicó el IX Gran Prix delAtlántico, tras compensar los tiempos entretodas las embarcaciones participantes quealcanzaron la línea de meta en Puerto delRey (Puerto Rico) y realizaron toda la trave-sía a vela en la regata trasatlántica.El Comité de Regata estableció la clasifi-cación del Gran Prix del Atlántico2016 en tiempo compensado en RI, asícomo en la categoría Open y en tiemporeal TR. Tras la compensación de tiem-pos por rating, la clasificaciónen RI quedó encabezada por el “Carat”. En opinión de Amador, su victoria fueposible gracias a una metódica estrate-gia de navegación de altura y a unabuena puesta a punto del velero. Paralograrlo contó con una buena tripulaciónque supo dosificar en toda la travesíatanto las cualidades del barco como alas condiciones personales. El equipo,formado por David Florit, Juan de

Melgar, Antoni Triay y Lluis Colom, entodo momento estuvo atento de lo queocurría con sus rivales y supo aprovecharal máximo sus posibilidades, desdemitad del recorrido.Al desembarcar en los pantalanes dePuerto del Rey, Magraner felicitó a sutripulación, destacando que la llega-da: “ha sido la más emocionante que hetenido en un Gran Prix”. On arrival, EnriqueCurt had nothing but good words to sayabout the crossing, pointing out that he’dbeen assisted by an amazing crew, allvery young, “which is proof of the upcom-ing generation of extremely well-qualifiedsailors, who – in my case – made it allsmooth sailing, despite the tough condi-tions in this year’s GranPrix”, explained Curt, “with very variablewinds in the first leg of the regatta,between the Canaries and Cape Verde,and then very strong trade windsthroughout the entire ocean crossingover to the Caribbean”. She was thesmallest boat in the fleet and was takingpart in the short-handed category.Despite her boom snapping in the middleof the Atlantic, which prevented themfrom taking full advantage of the tail-winds from Cape Verde over to PuertoRico, Ignacio and Stephen bravely foughtright up to the end, securing this sought-after third place.Just as heroic was the fourth place in theoveralls achieved by the Grand Soleil50 Andromeda V with Jorge Mitjavilafrom CN Santa Pola at the helm andcrewed by Ibón Abuin, Javier Fernández,Sergio Soriano and Arnaud Tichelen, whodue to problems with charging batterieshad to manually use the rudder for a sig-nificant part of the voyage, as the autorudder wasn’t working at full capacity. Meanwhile, the largest boat in the fleet,the Moody 64 Saliar captained by JorgeTubella, was the first across the line inPuerto Rico, on 30 January, and there-fore the first Open in the table.The Gran Prix del Atlántico is the leadingSpain-based transatlantic regatta. Itattracts many seasoned sailors and col-laborators such as Rafael del Castillowith his ‘Rueda de Navegantes’ (a radiosupport programme), who on this occa-sion was expertly helped by his colleaguePulu. Based on the island of São Vicente(Cape Verde), both were the turn-to con-tacts for the sailors as they passedthrough this area, when the fleet tackedtowards the Caribbean. The ultimate goalof the race is to follow the trade windsand reach the idyllic Antilles while enjoy-ing full-out transatlantic sailing. The Gran Prix del Atlántico is a majorSpanish offshore race aimed at amateursailors, which every two years links aSpanish port (Marina Rubicón inLanzarote) with a Caribbean marina,which tends to change for each edition.Destinations have so far included PuertoRico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic,Martinique and Colombia.

The Swan 44R Carat, flying the RCN PortPollença pennant and skippered byAmador Magraner, recently won the 9thGran Prix del Atlántico, after the timecorrection of all the boats that crossedthe finishing line in Puerto del Rey(Puerto Rico) and made the transatlanticcrossing entirely under sail.The Race Committee used IRC time cor-rection factors for scoring the 2106 GranPrix del Atlántico, as well as the opencategory and real time. Como señala Diego Riera, en la página 14 de esta revista, el balance del año para la secciónde vela ligera ha sido irregular. Ello se ha debido, en gran parte, a la enorme inestabilidadmeteorológica que ha afectado a la mayoría de regatas en otoño e invierno. Innumerablespruebas del calendario deportivo se han visto afectadas, en ocasiones, por la falta de vien-to y en otras, por su exceso. Aun así la regata no desmereció y lacompetición fue muy reñida.El sábado un levante del 070 y entre 10y 15 nudos permitió comenzar la primeraprueba puntualmente y que se realizarantres mangas para los Optimist absolutosy cuatro en el grupo D, Optimist inicia-ción. Mathew Moragues del CVPA hizotres primeros y Gema Llamas tres segun-dos dejando sentenciado el TrofeuColonya en el primer día.A su vez, Biel Monerris del Estanyol –ycon sólo 7 años- firmó dos primeros ydos segundos no dando opción al restode la flota de iniciación.El domingo la meteo fue completamentediferente, durante dos horas estuvo elcomité flotando sin tener muy claro si sepodría realizar alguna prueba. As Diego Riera says on page 14 of thismagazine, it was a great year all roundfor the dinghy sailing division, if some-what erratic. This is mainly down to themajor climatological instability that dog-ged the most of the regattas in autumnand winter. Countless races in the calen-dar were affected, sometimes by a lackof wind and other times by its excess.Anyway, here’s a brief review of the pasteleven months in the division.STIU TROPHY. Our Club, sponsored forthe fourth year running by the JoieriaStiu jewellers, hosted the Trofeo Stiu forOptimist D back in March. This regattafor novices attracted twenty gutsy sailorsthis year, nine of whom were taking partin their first ever competitive race. Onthe Saturday, the Bay came up trumpswith a light breeze barely topping 12knots and very consistent in direction,which allowed the race committee to setup a square course between PuntaAvanzada and Manresa. Tomeu Tortellafrom Ca’n Picafort notched up a first, athird and a second place, fighting offNicolás Benito from s’Estanyol, a toughopponent who secured a third, a secondand another third place. When the kids came back to dry land,Xisco Venzala from the Joieria Stiu wel-comed them with a burger off the barbe-cue and a well-deserved soft drink. The Sunday wasn’t a real success andeven though one trial set off, it had to becancelled due to the wind petering out.For the next hour and a half the commit-tee tried to get a new start underway,moving the field twice in search of thebest conditions. At five o’clock on the dot, the trophieswere awarded on the terrace of the Club,with the winners being Joan Moll fromCala Ratjada in third, Nicolas Benito froms’Estanyol in second place, and TomeuTortella in first.SANTA EULALIA BALEARICS OPTIMISTCHAMPIONSHIPS. Cabanellas raced in the BalearicOptimist Championships held by ClubNáutico Santa Eulalia between 27February and 1 March. The weather wasthe major determinant of the race, as onthe first day none of the scheduled trialscould be held due to persistent showersaccompanied by strong gusts of windreaching 40 knots. On the Sunday, arolling northerly wind of around 15 knotscomplicated the day for Caterina, whorecorded a 53rd and 54th and didn’tcompete in a third trial due to damagedmaterial, ending the day with a 42ndoverall. On the Monday, having recoveredfrom the walloping of four races with aconstant northerly wind of 20 knots, fourother trials were held but with betterresults for our girl, who managed tolower positions thanks to a 29th and a30th place. Caterina Cabanellas, Optimistsailor from our club, qualified for the CopaFederación, the Balearic Championshipsand the Finales Escolares. After the sixregattas in the Mallorca silver group, oursailor secured thirteenth place in theisland-wide ranking, giving her a passportto the finals of the regional championships,where the very best Optimist sailors fromthe three islands fight it out for a total of75 places for the Copa Federación and theBalearic Championships, and just 60places for the Finales Escolares. This stageof the regional championships is also aqualifier for the national championships. MATHEW MORAGUES WINS THE TROFEOCOLONYA. As is tradition in September,RCNPP last year held the 34th TrofeuColonya dinghy regatta, sponsored byCaixa de Pollença. The turnout was lowerthan in previous years, attracting fifty

sailors from s’Estanyol, Molinar, Puerto deAndratx, Cala Ratjada and RCNPP. Evenso, the regatta was no disappointment andcompetition was fierce.On the Saturday, a 070 easterly between10 and 15 knots paved the way for thefirst trial, with three legs for the Optimistoveralls and four for the Optimist D (begin-ners) taking place. Mathew Moraguesfrom CVPA notched up three firsts andGema Llamas came away with three sec-onds, sealing the Trofeu Colonya on thefirst day. In turn, Biel Monerris froms’Estanyol - at the tender age of seven -clinched two firsts and two seconds, clos-ing off all other options for the rest of theOptimist D fleet.The weather was completely different onthe Sunday, with the race committeespending two hours afloat without beingsure if any racing could take place. Anhour later than the planned start, a 15-knot westerly rose up with gusts of up to20 knots, meaning that the novices weresent back to port once they reached the

first buoy. Toni Coll from RCNPP remainedin first place, clinching second place inthe standings and followed by NicolásBenito from s’Estanyol in third. In theabsolute fleet, Joana Aina Cabanellasfrom RCNPP secured a first and a secondin the two trials. With five trials completed,the overall winner of the 34th TrofeuColonya was Mathew Moragues.The Optimist D ranking was: third place toNicolas Benito, CN s’Estanyol; second placeto Toni Coll, RCNPP; and first place to BielMonerris, CN s’Estanyol. In the S11 catego-ry: third for Leopoldo Pérez-Fontán, CMMolinar; second for Eduardo Light, CV PortAndratx; and first for Javier Plomer, CV PortAndratx. And in the S13 group: third forToni Fornés, CM Molinar; second for MªMar Gil, CV Port Andratx; and first for GemaLlamas, CM Molinar. The Club's Sailing School is expecting tocoach around 400 students this summer,up almost 25% on last year. More thanforty students every week, aged between 7and 14, will pass through the school.Courses cost €90, with a 10% discount formembers.The School also organises one-week kayaking courses with two differenttimetables available, from 9.45 to

11.45am and from 11.45 to 1:45pm, at acost of €60. What should I bring?Sportswear, bathing suit and T-shirt. TheSchool holds courses out at sea, so sun-screen and sunglasses are more than rec-ommended. A water bottle and somethingto snack on is also a good idea.The daily schedule is fun and varied. Thestudents arrive at 10.00am, the coachesgive a short theory session and then getthe boats ready to go sailing untillunchtime, at around 1.30pm. Then it'stime for some food and then back out tosea again until 4.30pm, when they comeback to the Club to pick everything up.The courses are held on 'Gambas' (groupboats for beginners), Laser Picos (double-handed boats for beginners or advanced),and Optimists (single-handed boats foradvanced sailors).There are also windsurfing courses avail-able. Besides nautical sports, the Schoolputs on other activities such as work-shops related to nature and environmen-tal education. A range of interesting work-shops are held in collaboration withFundación Ecomar, which provides awhole load of educational materials.

La Escuela de Vela del Club tiene previsiónde instruir a 400 cursillistas durante esteverano. La cifra supone casi un 25% másque el año anterior. Más de cuarenta alum-nos, todas las semanas, de edades com-prendidas entre los 7 y los 14 años, pasa-rán por la Escuela. El precio de los cursoses de 90 euros, hay descuentos del 10%para socios. La Escuela también organizacursos de piragua de una semana de dura-ción distribuidos en dos turnos, de 09:45 a11:45 hrs. y de 11:45 a 13:45 hrs. con unprecio de 60 euros.¿Qué traer? Ropa de deporte, bañador ycamiseta. En la escuela se hace deporteen el mar, o sea que la crema solar y lasgafas de sol son más que recomendables.Una cantimplora y algo para merendar. La agenda diaria es divertida y variada.Llegan a las 10:00, los monitores impar-ten algo de teoría, se montan los barcos ysalen a navegar hasta la hora de comer,aproximadamente a las 13:30. Comida, ysalida de nuevo al mar hasta las 16:30,hora en que entran de nuevo al Club y lorecogen todo. Los cursos se realizan enGamba -embarcación colectiva, iniciación-,Laser Pico -embarcación doble,

iniciación/perfeccionamiento- y Optimist -embarcación individual, perfeccionamiento-.También hay cursos de Windsurf. Ademásde la enseñanza de las materias propias, laEscuela realiza y organiza otras actividadescomo talleres relacionadas con la naturale-za y la educación medio ambiental. En cola-boración con la Fundación Ecomar, queaporta diversos materiales didácticos, serealizan interesantes talleres.

Miles de personas disfrutaron en la 2ª feria“Pollença Race & Boat Shows”

A lo largo de tres días del último fin desemana del mes de mayo se celebró lasegunda edición de la Pollença Race &Boat Shows, en el Club Náutico del Port dePollença. Las carreras de paddle surf, demotos acuáticas o de embarcacionessemirrígidas centraron la atención demiles de personas que se acercaron hastalos pantalanes del Club a lo largo de lostres días programados. Más allá de la parte deportiva, cabe desta-car que el sábado 28 de mayo, a las 13horas, en el agua de frente a la entradadel Club Náutico, Flyboard and Fun prepa-ró un espectáculo que se pudo volver verel domingo, a la misma hora y en elmismo lugar.La Feria abrió sus puertas a las 17 horas,del viernes día 27, aunque una breve inau-guración oficial tuvo lugar a las 19 horas,en presencia de representantes del Club

Náutico y del Ayuntamiento de Pollença,con la actuación de la banda de música. Alas 20 horas, quedó abierta la exposiciónde fotografías antiguas de motonáutica ypiragüismo que se pudo visitar en el salónde actos del Club el sábado y el domingo.La entrada a la feria y a las exposicionesera libre y gratuita.El numeroso público asistente recorrió lascarpas ubicadas en el mismo Club paradespués presenciar demostraciones dedistintos deportes náuticos. La carrera demotos de agua fue uno de los actos quecontó con más público. Además, hubo unademostración de yoga en paddle surf queestuvo organizado por Bellini Surf Shop yel bautismo de mar de vela y kayac. Almediodía, los asistentes pudieron degus-tar una paella gigante en el Chiringuito almódico precio de 5 euros y, a las 20'30horas, se preparó una barbacoa también

para 5 euros. Mientras que el domingo,también en el Chiringuito, se preparó unasabrosa fideuá.De hecho, la gastronomía tuvo su protago-nismo durante la Feria. El viernes, a las 20horas, se ofreció un picadillo de pinchos ymontaditos en la terraza del Club.Además, el restaurante del Club preparóun menú especial a precios cerrado y eco-nómico con motivo de este evento que sir-vió el viernes por la tarde, el sábado amediodía y por la noche, y el domingo amediodía. El viernes por la tarde tambiénse programó una degustación de “gintonics” que dio paso a una fiesta blancaamenizada por DJ’s Group. Tanto el sábado como el domingo, unespectáculo de circo y malabares, y untaller de circo infantil hizo las delicias delos más pequeños.Finalmente, el domingo, a las 13'30 horas,

The second edition of the PollençaRace & Boat Show was held at the ClubNáutico del Port de Pollença over thethree days of the final weekend in May.Paddle surf, jet ski and RIB races cap-tured the attention of the thousands ofpeople who flocked to the Club quaysover the three days. Leaving purely sporting activities aside,at 1.00pm on Sunday 29 May – in thewater opposite the entrance to the ClubNáutico - Flyboard and Fun staged an

amazing show that they had beenpreparing over the weekend. The Show opened its doors at 5.00pmon Friday 27, although a short officialopening ceremony took place at7.00pm, attended by representativesfrom the Club Náutico and PollençaTown Council and followed by livemusic. At 8.00pm, an exhibition of vin-tage photos on motor boating andcanoeing was inaugurated, stayingopen for the rest of the weekend.Entrance to the Show and exhibitionswas free to everyone. The many show-goers strolled aroundthe stands at the Club and then wenton to watch the aquatic sport displays.The jet ski race was one of the mostpopular when it comes to numbers.There was also a display of SUP yoga,organised by Bellini Surf Shop, andintroduction to sailing/kayaking ses-sions. At lunchtime, visitors were ableto savour a huge paella prepared at theChiringuito for the modest price of 5

euros, while at 8.30pm a barbecue waslaid on, also for 5 euros. And then onthe Sunday, the Chiringuito served amouth-watering fideuá.In fact, food played a central rolethroughout the Show. At 8.00pm on theFriday, a finger buffet of tapas and pin-chos was held on the Club terrace.What’s more, the Club restaurant pre-pared a special fixed price menu for theevent that was served on the Fridayevening, Saturday lunchtime andevening and Sunday lunchtime.On the Friday evening, there was also agin-tonic tasting session which then ledon to a White Party with DJs Group onthe decks. On both the Saturday and the Sunday,a circus workshop and a juggling showkept the younger ones enthralled. On the Sunday at 1.30pm, prized werehanded out by the Club chairman, AlanPonte, and at 7.00pm, the second edi-tion of the Pollença Race & Boat Showwas officially closed.

Los éxitos de la sección de piragüismo están a lavista. Sete Benavides y Toni Segura se proclama-ban en mayo campeones del mundo en C2 200metros. Una conquista histórica en el piragüismoespañol pues es la primera vez que nuestro paísobtiene una medalla de oro en C2 con dos depor-tistas de un mismo Club. La clasificación de Sete para las Olimpiadas, larecompensa de podio mundial para Toni Segurason alicientes más que suficientes para estimularal equipo de piragüismo del Club, integrado por60 chavales. Un equipo que va a más y que haconseguido que el RCNPP sea el Club con másmedallas de España.En opinión de su entrenador Francisco (Kiko)Martín el Club, por sus dimensiones y sus medios,está consiguiendo hacer historia. Birgitte, Pedro,Natalia y Miguel José son los otros cuatro entre-nadores que le acompañan en este bonito trabajo.Son cuatro monitores excelentes, vocacionales yentregados que saben muy bien que a base dehoras de trabajo, de constancia, de afán de supe-ración y de ilusión pueden conseguir tremendosresultados.Nos lo comenta Kiko con estas palabras: “Es cierto que los éxitos de Sete y de Toni Segura

son grandes estímulos para los chavales que vie-nen detrás. Nosotros necesitamos una granpirámide con mucha gente en la base. Este esque-ma funciona bien siempre y cuando la base se tra-baje lo mismo al 30, que al 60, que al 100%. Nopuedes tener una base muy grande con un equi-pamiento reducido. Es imprescindible tener unaarmonía entre los medios y el número de deportis-tas que permita trabajar en condiciones. El Clubha puesto todos los medios para que esto seaposible. Esto es importantísimo”.

nales e internacionales a los palistas de las Islas Baleares. Nuestro Secretario Alfonso Benavides y el directivo responsable de la sección deportiva Pere

Canoeing Gala, at which local, national and international honours were given to canoeists from the islands. Our secretary Alfonso Benavides and head of the

sports division Pere Antoni Nadal attended the event, along with our canoeists and coaches.

The successes of the canoe sprint division arecrystal clear, as Sete Benavides and Toni Segurawere crowned world champions in C-2 200 metresback in March. A historic win for Spanish canoe-ing, as it’s the first time that our country hassecured a gold medal in C-2 with two athletesfrom the same Club. Sete’s qualification for the Olympics and Toni’sworld podium position are major incentives for theClub’s sixty-strong canoeing team. And this is ateam that’s going from strength to strength,already having made RCNPP the Club with themost medals in Spain. According to their coach Francisco (Kiko) Martín,the Club – given its size and resources – is well oncourse to making history. Birgitte, Pedro, Nataliaand Miguel José are the four other coaches whowork alongside him in this rewarding job. They areexcellent, dedicated and hands-on coaches whoknow perfectly well that tremendous results can be

gained on the basis of hard work, perseverance, adesire for self-improvement and eagerness.Kiko sums it up in these words: “It’s true that the victories of Sete and Toni are greatstimuli for the up-and-coming canoeists. However,I’m convinced that the true lesson is not the successas such, but the groundwork and coaching modelwhich are needed to achieve it. The ‘Sete effect’ hastriggered quality and not quantity. Right now at theClub we’ve got 14- and 15-year-olds who are defi-nitely heading in the right direction. Our model isbased on sportsmanship and conscientiousness. Itshows you the way. The boys and girls know that ifthey keep going, they’ll achieve results. They’ve gotthe chance of going far”. “Our project”, adds Kiko, “is huge. There arealmost sixty of us and I’m very optimistic becausethe school works on a grassroots concept. Weneed a big pyramid with many people at the base.This model works well as long as the base per-forms in the same way whether it’s at 30, 60 or100%. You can’t have a huge base with few facili-ties. It’s crucial to have harmony between theresources and the number of athletes, which inturn lets you work in optimum conditions. The Clubhas provided all the resources for this to be possi-ble. And that’s vitally important”.

“Storm Angel” gana el XXIII Open de Pesca de Altura de Baleares

El “Storm Angel” patroneado por JoanAlba, ha resultado ganador del XXIIIOpen de Baleares y por ello ha sido invi-tado a participar en el Offshore WorldChampionship, OWC 2017 que se cele-brará en Costa Rica en primavera de2017 entre los representantes de los70 campeonatos más importantesdel mundo. Una meteorología inestableha marcado este Open.El viernes por la noche en la reunión depatrones y con las previsiones meteoro-lógicas a la vista se informó que el sába-do sería un buen día de pesca, no sien-do igual para el domingo ya que paraese día se preveía, como después seconstató, nordeste de 4 a 5 y mar mare-jada. Como sea que la autorización parala celebración del evento por parte deCapitanía Marítima es de marejadilla y

viento con fuerza 3 no había alternativay la organización tenía la obligación desuspender la segunda jornada prevista. De hecho, esta mala previsión meteoro-lógica redujo el número de embarcacio-nes participantes a 16 reduciendo la ins-cripción inicial de 24. Por otra parte la previsión Tuna Finderde localización de zonas idóneas para lapresencia de túnidos era un tanto decep-cionante ya que las zonas indicadasestaban a más de 60 millas deCabo Formentor. Las capturas han sido escasas e inusual-mente variadas pues en la misma jorna-da se han capturado en la misma zona:dorados, albacoras, bonitos listados, atu-nes rojos y agujas imperiales. El “Storm Angel” tuvo la fortuna de locali-zar y conseguir capturar dos agujas

imperiales (tetrapturus belone) una de1,50 m y otra de 1,30 cm lo que hizoque su puntuación se disparara ya quelos picudos tienen una puntuación prefe-rente y de ahí su victoria tanto en el concurso como en la puntuaciónpara el Challenge de Pesca a Bordo,sobre grandes rivales que conocen bienla zona y son asiduos participantes delOpen de Baleares clásico delR.C.N.P. Storm Angel, skippered by Joan Alba,easily won the 23rd Balearic Open andas a result has been invited to competein the 2017 Offshore WorldChampionship to be held in Costa Ricanext spring, which will feature teamsfrom seventy of the world's leadingtournaments. Unstable weather dogged this Open,though. On the Friday evening at theskippers' briefing, the forecasts weresaying that Saturday would be a goodday's fishing, but things weren't lookingso good for the Sunday, with a Force 4to 5 NE and choppy seas. As the har-bourmaster only allows the event if thewind is Force 3 with slight swell, the

organisers had no other option than tosuspend the second day's competition. In the end, this poor weather forecastreduced the number of boats takingpart from twenty-four to sixteen. What's more, the tuna finder reportwas somewhat disappointing, as theareas indicated were more than 60miles off Cape Formentor. Catches were rare and unusuallyvaried, including dorado, albacore, skip-jack tuna, bluefin tuna andMediterranean spearfish. Storm Angel was fortunate enough tolocate and capture two of theseMediterranean spearfish, one of 1.50m and another of 1.30 m, truly boos-

Los óculus son los ojos que se pintan en las amu-ras de los barcos. Los primeros óculus documen-tados corresponden a los barcos egipcios que seencomendaban a la protección del dios Horus.Esta superstición pasó a los fenicios que gracias asus rutas comerciales lo llevaron a todos los confi-nes del Mediterráneo y un poco más allá. Lasjábegas de Málaga siguen luciendo un ojo fenicioen la actualidad.

Fuera del gran mar, del mar entre tierras, del marverde –como llamaban al Mediterráneo los grie-gos- los árabes llevaron esta tradición al Índico,llegando hasta el sureste asiático. Actualmente eltipo de dibujo diferencia a los barcos de las distin-tas zonas fluviales de la India y del Mekong.Pero volviendo aquí, en nuestro club, podemos verque los óculus se han convertido en el logotipo delos distintos astilleros y así podemos diferenciar

De los distintos dibujospodremos ver un buen puñado de emes dibujadasen vertical como remate a una línea que va portoda la borda del llaut en el caso de los Myabcaso un bellísimo dragón que escupe fuego en elNavara, una joya diseñada por William Fife.

Son también la firma del diseñador, independien-temente del astillero del barco. Podemos compro-barlos en el motovolero del pantalán 1 y en elMistral del muelle principal ya que Angus Primrosefirmaba con una prímula (primrose en inglés) los

barcos que salían de su genial trazo.Pocos veleros tienen un óculus propio, el Popeyelleva un simpático dibujo del marinero en cadaamura y en el pantalán 2 podemos ver un pececi-llo a cada lado de la proa de otro velero.

The jábega fishing boatstypical of Málaga still sport a Phoenician eye today.Away from the great sea, the sea between lands, thesea of green (as the Greeks called the Mediterranean),the Arabs took this tradition over to the Indian Oceanand right up to Southeast Asia. As of today, the type of

drawing distinguishes boats from the different riverareas of India and the Mekong. But back here, at ourClub, we can see that the idea of the oculus has nowcome to feature in the logo of different shipyards, sowe can tell Jeanneaus and Benetaux apart by checking

if they display wind roses or seahorses. Of the variousdesigns we can see a bunch of vertical letter Ms top-ping a line that goes along the side of a llaut, in thecase of Myabcas, or a beautiful fire-breathing dragonon Navarra, a true gem of a boat designed by WilliamFife. These are also the designer's signature, regard-less of the shipyard. We can spot them on the motor-sailer berthed at Quay 1 and on the yacht Mistral onthe central quay, as the designer Angus Primrosesigned his stunningly-penned boats with the flowerfound in his name.Few sailboats have their own oculus now, but Popeyeboasts a quirky drawing of sailor on each side of herbow, while on Quay 2 we can spot a minnow on thebow of another boat.

Pollença es un municipio con una inaca-bable tradición cultural y artística. Sin irmás lejos, ha sido tanto cuna comomeca de grandes pintores y poetas, ins-pirados por sus peculiares paisajes acaballo entre el mar y la montaña. Asimismo, conserva la impronta, el

carácter y el legado de la antigua urbede “Pollentia”, uno de los principalesasentamientos romanos de Mallorca ycuyos restos arqueológicos, los másimportantes de la isla, pueden visitarseen la actualidad. Además, la rica historia del municipio se

refleja en las pintorescas fiestas, ferias ytradiciones que se conservan más vivasque nunca, como la representaciónanual de la batalla de moros y cristianos,en que se rememora un histórico enfren-tamiento entre tropas cristianas y piratasotomanos que tuvo lugar en la villa en1.550. Este espectáculo, que tiene comoescenario varios puntos del casco históri-co, tiene lugar cada 2 de agosto, conmotivo de la festividad de la Mare deDéu dels Àngels, patrona de Pollença. En el marco de estas celebraciones, elpueblo vive una animada verbena congrupos musicales en vivo y mucha ani-mación, que finaliza al amanecer con lasolemne representación, por parte de labanda de música municipal, del himnomunicipal de la Alborada. Otro momento cumbre de las fiestas enhonor a la Patrona es el baile de los ‘cos-siers’, un interesante espectáculo dedanzas populares tradicionales.En el Puerto de Pollença, una de las fes-tividades más destacadas es la de SantPere, patrón de los pescadores, quetiene lugar a finales de junio, con bailesregionales, conciertos, homenajes a anti-guos pescadores, habaneras y hasta unaferia marinera. En los últimos años, los vinos de Mallorca se hanrevalorizado sensiblemente y han ganado prestigioa marchas forzadas a escala internacional.Aunque la viticultura está muy arraigada en la isladesde la época de los romanos, y el historiadorPlinio el Viejo da testimonio de cómo los vinos deBaleares eran muy apreciados en todo el Imperio,su prestigio fue desplazado en épocas más recien-tes. De hecho, hasta hace muy pocos años, loscaldos mallorquines estaban destinados casi ensu totalidad al consumo local y eran prácticamen-te desconocidos fuera de la isla. Actualmente,pueden encontrarse en restaurantes, tiendasespecializadas e incluso supermercados del restode España y el extranjero.Y es que, en Mallorca, “el clima mediterráneo, elsol, las altas temperaturas y la cercanía al marfavorecen la elaboración de vinos únicos”, señalaMiguel Núñez, propietario de Wine RoutesMallorca (VullVi), quien destaca “la importancia

de trabajar con variedades locales, variedadesque están adaptadas y dan vinos con personali-dad”, como la de malvasía, desaparecida de laisla a finales del siglo XIX por culpa de la destruc-tiva plaga de la filoxera y recuperada recientemen-te. No en vano, “los vinos mallorquines son cadavez más reconocidos y elogiados, y se están posi-cionando muy bien”, explica. “En las islas se con-sumen cada vez más y, aunque en la Península suconsumo es más selectivo, en el resto de Europaestán muy cotizados”, gracias a que son “conoci-dos por los turistas que nos visitan, que luegosiguen teniendo interés en ellos al volver a su paísde origen”.Ahora bien, si el vino mallorquín es un producto nove-doso en el exterior frente a otras procedencias másconsolidadas, con Ribera del Duero o Rioja, dentrode la isla existen diferentes denominaciones, algunasmás conocidas y otras emergentes. Entre estas últi-mas, encontramos los vinos del norte de Mallorca,

caldos muy particulares debido a las especiales con-diciones climáticas y orográficas de zona. Segúnexplica Núñez, estos vinos “se diferencian por elclima, el terreno y sobre todo por las variedades, yaque en una misma zona podemos encontrar vinoshechos con la misma variedad y con característicasdiferenciales marcados por el microclima de cadafinca. Son vinos con personalidad, vivos, honestos”.Entre los productores, desta-can Vinyes Mortitx (Escorca),Galmés i Ribot (SantaMargalida), Son Vives y Ca’nPico (Banyalbufar), Son Puig(Puigpunyent) y Can Vidalet(Pollença). Núñez indica que“mayoritariamente son pro-ductores pequeños, payesesque aman su trabajo y la tie-rra, respetando el entorno ycontribuyendo con su trabajoa conservar el patrimonioagronómico de la isla: podría-mos decir que son los jardine-ros de Mallorca”, ilustra. Encuanto a la distribución, “secomercializan mayoritaria-mente en la isla”. En este punto, señala que “hayque tener en cuenta que Mallorca recibe multitudde visitantes en la temporada turística, y los turis-

tas son los primeros interesados en conocer un pro-ducto propio, de la tierra”. En consecuencia, “unaparte significativa de la producción va destinada ala exportación” a lugares como Alemania, Inglaterrao los países nórdicos.“Hemos notado un aumento significativo de interésen los últimos años por la gastronomía y vinos deMallorca”, explica Núñez, quien añade que “las

bodegas del norte son lasmás apreciadas por susemplazamientos y por susvinos”. No es para menos,teniendo en cuenta el privile-giado entorno en el que seubican, presidido por laSierra de Tramuntana, decla-rada Patrimonio Mundial porla Unesco en la categoría dePaisaje Cultural. “Antes soloeran unos pocos los quepodían visitar bodegas ydegustar sus vinos, peroempresas como la nuestra ybodegas que nos abren suspuertas, están acercando amás gente a conocer estos

excelentes vinos”, añade Núñez.Una de ellas es Galmés i Ribot, que “tiene muchoéxito entre nuestros clientes ya que es una bode-

ga familiar de producción ecológica y que elaboravinos con variedades locales, y todos estas carac-terísticas son muy apreciadas por el cliente euro-peo, que valora verdaderamente el producto localy además, que sea ecológico le da valor al produc-to”, según Núñez.Otra de las bodegas que abren sus puertas alpúblico es Vinyes Mortitx, ubicada en un especta-cular enclave en la maravillosa carretera que uneEscorca y Pollença y única por su altitud, a 500metros del nivel del mar. Según explica Lili Torras,responsable de comunicación de la bodega, elcarácter único de sus vinos se debe al microclimadel que disfrutan sus cultivos, “con una aberturaentre las montañas a unos 4 kilómetros que dejapasar la brisa, refrescando las viñas hasta entre 5y 8ºC por debajo del resto de la isla”. Otra de suspeculiaridades es “el terreno, basado en roca vol-cánica en lugar del suelo calcáreo predominanteen la isla, lo que da un toque mineral a los cal-dos”, señala. Con una discreta producción deentre 80.000 y 100.000 botellas al año, la explo-tación solo utiliza uva propia de variedades comomalvasía, chardonnay, muscat y riesling para losblancos, y syrah, merlot, cabernet y monastrellpara los tintos. “Además, estamos recuperandovariedades autóctonas”, explica Torras. “El añopasado, plantamos prensal, giró ros y gorgollassa,y esperamos poder elaborar vinos con estas varie-dades en tres o cuatro años”.Sin duda, vale la pena visitar el norte de Mallorcapara dejarse envolver por sus magníficos paisajes,pero si además lo hacemos sosteniendo una copade vino elaborado en esta tierra, podremos sentiren boca y nariz la personalidad, el aroma y elsabor de un entorno natural único.

In recent years, appreciation of wines fromMallorca has grown and they have swiftly gainedprestige on an international level. Although wine-making has been deeply ingrained in the islandsince Roman times, with the historian Pliny theElder testifying how Balearic wines were prizedthroughout the empire, their prestige had under-

gone a certain shift in more recent times. In fact,until just a few years ago Mallorcan wines weredestined almost entirely for local consumptionand were virtually unknown outside the island.But now they can be found in restaurants, gour-met stores and even supermarkets in the rest ofSpain and abroad.It’s that in Mallorca, “the Mediterranean climate,the sun, the high temperatures and the proximityto the sea favour the creation of unique wines,”says Miguel Núñez, owner of Wine RoutesMallorca (VullVi), who emphasises “the impor-tance of working with local adapted varieties thatproduce wines with character”, such as Malvasia,which disappeared from the island in the latenineteenth century because of the destructivephylloxera plague and has recently been recov-ered. Not surprisingly, “Mallorcan wines areincreasingly acknowledged and revered, whilegaining a strong market position”, he adds. “Theyare really popular on the islands now andalthough consumption on mainland Spain is littlebit more selective, in the rest of Europe they arehighly sought after”, thanks to being “well-knownby the tourists visiting us, who then seek themout when they get back home”.That said, if Mallorcan wine is a new product over-seas compared to other more established regions,such as Ribera del Duero or Rioja, on the islanditself there are several different denominations,some better known and others still emerging.Among the latter, we find the wines of northernMajorca, which are truly unique thanks to the spe-cial climate conditions and relief in the area.According to Núñez, it “stands out for the climate,terrain and especially the varieties, since we canfind wines made from the same variety and withdifferent characteristics influenced by the micro-cli-mate of each finca. These are wines with character;bursting with life and true to the palate”.Some of the leading producers are VinyesMortitx (Escorca), Galmés i Ribot (SantaMargalida), Son Vives and Ca’n Pico(Banyalbufar), Son Puig (Puigpunyent) and CanVidalet (Pollença). Núñez says that “mostly theyare small producers, who love their work and theterrain, respecting the environment and helpingpreserve the agricultural heritage of the island”,adding that “we could quite easily call them thehorticulturalists of Mallorca”. As for distribution,“they are marketed mostly on the island”. On thispoint, he mentions that “we should bear in mindthat Mallorca welcomes many visitors throughoutthe tourist season, and tourists are always inter-ested in discovering a product from the island

itself”. As a result, “a significant part of the pro-duction is earmarked for export” to places suchGermany, the UK and Scandinavia.“Over the past few years, we’ve noticed a signifi-cant increase in interest for Mallorcan cuisineand wines”, explains Núñez, adding that “thewineries in the north are the most admired onesgiven their location and their wines”. It’s no won-der, though, considering the privileged environ-ment in which they are located, dominated by theSierra de Tramuntana, declared a World HeritageCultural Landscape by UNESCO. “Before, only afew people visited wineries and taste wines, butcompanies like ours and other bodegas havebeen opening up their doors for people to discov-er these excellent wines”, Núñez goes on to say.One of them is Galmés i Ribot, which “is verypopular among our customers because it’s anorganic family-run bodega producing wines withlocal varieties, and these features are highlyappreciated by the European client who trulyappreciates local produce and also wants thereto be an eco-friendly side to things”, said Núñez.Another winery that opens its doors to the publicis Vinyes Mortitx, located in a spectacular set-ting on the beautiful road that runs betweenEscorca and Pollença at 500 metres above sea

level. Desde hace casi 60 años, el Hotel Eolo se alza prác-ticamente en primera línea de mar frente a la costadel Puerto de Pollença, ofreciendo a sus clientesunas privilegiadas vistas del muelle y la Bahía, con lainconfundible y accidentada silueta de PuntaAvançada como telón de fondo. Fundado en 1958, elEolo ha sido testigo de las grandes transformacionesexperimentadas por el puerto a lo largo de las déca-das, y ha dado cobijo a una cantidad incalculable devisitantes, desde los albores del 'boom' del turismoen Mallorca a la actualidad, marcada por un turismode calidad con altos estándares de exigencia. En estos años, a los “llaüts” de pesca que han domi-nado tradicionalmente la estampa del puerto se hanido sumando los modernos yates y los velerosdeportivos.
