In today’s reading from the Gospel of Luke we hear the proclamation of the baptism of Jesus with “all the people.” Indeed, “heaven was opened,” and the Father announced his special favor. Whenever we partake of the body and blood of Christ, heed his call in our daily lives, share his Good News, become instruments of his transforming justice and peace, heaven is opened to us, and through the Holy Spirit, the Lord announces his special favor on us as well. A good stewardship reflection this week might be this: How, or in what ways, have we personally experienced God’s special favor in our lives?

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. This officially brings to an end the season of Christmas. You might say this is a second Epiphany. It is important to us as Catholics and Christians because it represents a second creation involving the entire Trinity. In fact in the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because God appears in three persons. Jesus the Son is baptized; the Holy Spirit descends upon Him; and God declares “You are my beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.” We recall our own Baptism on this day, because Christ’s Baptism represents in many ways what occurred at our Baptism. At Christ’s Baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him. At our Baptism the Trinity occupied our soul; Christ was declared the “Beloved Son”; at our Baptism we became a child of God. At Jesus’ Baptism the heavens were opened, and at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. On this Holy Day we need to reflect upon our own Baptismal calls — calls to live and love on this earth, a command to seek holiness, to actively be disciples of Christ, calls which can be achieved in part by embracing stewardship as a way of life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1213) states: “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the door which gives access to the other sacraments. We are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission.”

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia 10 de enero de 2016 Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor Que providencial que este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia coincida con el año C del Leccionario, que es cuando toca leer los domingos el Evangelio de Lucas el cual subraya la misericordia de Dios, encontrando lo perdido, sanando a los enfermos, restableciendo lo separado, consolando a los tristes, perdonando al pecador por medio del ministerio de Jesús. ¡Pero antes de que esto suceda, Lucas presenta a Jesús orando! Como prácticas modernas programadas para medir el costo por medio de la productividad, nosotros intuitivamente apreciamos el llamado del Jubileo incluyendo los desafíos prácticos de nuestro Bautismo. Pero hoy Lucas se concentra no en que Jesús se bautiza, sino en Jesús orando después de su bautizo. Así que debemos orar para convertirnos en los discípulos a los que estamos llamados a ser, que el Espíritu pueda empoderarnos hacer lo que los discípulos estamos llamados a ser. Dear Parishioners of Most Holy Trinity: A very Happy New Year to you as we celebrate the last feast of our Christmas season: the Baptism of Jesus. On this day we are reminded of our own baptism and our call to be followers of Jesus. Pope Francis has declared this to be a Jubilee Year of Mercy, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate God’s great and unending love and forgiveness for us by putting this love into action. St. Ignatius of Loyola tells us that the proper response to love is to return love. The best way possible to do this during this Jubilee Year is to realize the Corporal Works of Mercy which are specifically directed toward caring for the material needs of others. Most Holy Trinity has responded to an invitation from Bishop McGrath to put into practice one of the works desperately needed in this Valley of Plenty where so many go without: sheltering the homeless. Very shortly our parish community, with the help of many of you as volunteers, will open our facilities and welcome in from the cold our most needy homeless brothers and sisters. Special gratitude goes to our ad hoc committee, especially Deacon Juan Aquino, Fr George, as well as Ignacio Coloma and John Estrada from our St Vincent de Paul Society. Queridos Feligreses de Santísima Trinidad: Un Feliz Año Nuevo a todos ustedes mientras celebramos la última fiesta de nuestra temporada de Navidad: El Bautismo de Jesús. En este día se nos recuerda nuestro bautizo y el llamado a seguir a Jesús. El Papa Francisco ha declarado que este sea el Jubileo del Año de la Misericordia, y una oportunidad para reconocer y celebrar el gran e interminable amor y perdón de Dios por nosotros poniendo ese amor en acción. San Ignacio de Loyola nos dice que la respuesta apropiada al amor es devolver amor. La mejor manera posible de hacerlo en este Año del Jubileo es hacer las Obras de Misericordia Corporales las cuales son dirigidas especialmente hacia las necesidades materiales de otros. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La costumbre del bautismo infantil debe ser mucho más que un acto social o una tradición cultural, donde el ropón y los regalos son más importantes que la doctrina cristiana, y los padrinos se escogen no por su buen ejemplo sino por su cuenta bancaria. Según los Hechos de los Apóstoles, familias enteras se bautizaban cuando el padre de familia decidía hacerse cristiano. Esta práctica de bautizar, no solo al nuevo creyente sino también a su mujer y a sus hijos, poco a poco, quedó solo en bautizar los niños del original creyente. El mundo en aquel tiempo estaba basado sobre la familia así como muchas culturas latinas de hoy. El bautizo infantil nació en la Iglesia primitiva y al pasar de los siglos llegó a transformarse en un rito religioso muy importante en la catequesis del nuevo cristiano. El niño viste de ropita blanca que recuerda la presencia de Cristo en su alma, se le regala una vela que lo invita a brillar con la luz de Cristo y se le da una madrina o un padrino que le enseñará a vivir en Cristo. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. FORMATION The Jubillee Year of Mercy

What is a jubilee year? The practice of a jubilee year has ancient roots in the Jewish tradition and evidence for it can be found in the Old Testament (for example, see Leviticus 25). The jubilee year was called every fifty years and was a time for forgiveness. It stood as a reminder of God's providence and mercy. The dedication of a year for this emphasis provided the community with a time to come back into right relationship with one another and with God. As the practice of the jubilee year was adopted into the Catholic Church, these themes of mercy, forgiveness, and solidarity continued.

How is this Jubilee different from other Jubilee years? The Jubilee of Mercy that Pope Francis has called, from December 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016, is an Extraordinary Jubilee. This designation as an "Extraordinary Jubilee" sets it apart from the ordinary cycle of jubilees, or holy years, which are called every 25 years in the Catholic Church. By calling for a holy year outside of the normal cycle, a particular event or theme is emphasized. For example, Pope Francis called this particular Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to direct our attention and actions "on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father's actions in our lives . . . a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective" (MV, 3. . . ).

How do we live out the Jubilee of Mercy in our daily lives?

In Misericordiae vultus, Pope Francis emphasizes the need for the Church and all her members to live out the loving mercy that God has for us. Our response to God's loving mercy towards us is to act in that same way to all those we meet. The Holy Father reminds us that "Mercy is the very foundation of the Church's life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tender-ness she makes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy. The Church's very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love" (MV, 10. . . ). As members of the Body and Christ, our lives should reflect this witness of mercy to those we meet on a daily basis.

What are the Holy Doors? One of the central components of the Jubilee of Mercy is that the Holy Doors throughout the world will be opened during this Jubilee year. When they are opened at the beginning of the year, "the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope" (MV, 3. . . ). Since each diocese will have the opportunity to open a Door of Mercy in their diocese, all members of the faithful will have opportunity to make a pilgrimage to their local Holy Door during the Jubilee. This pilgrimage is to be a journey of walking closer with God and discovering "moment[s] of grace and spiritual renewal" (MV, 3. . . ). These doors are symbols of God's mercy, open to welcome everyone into the compassion of God's love that Christ proclaimed.

In the Diocese of San Jose, Bishop McGrath has established three Holy Doors. These can be found at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph (San Jose) and at the churches of Our Lady of Guadalupe (San Jose) and Our Lady of Peace(Santa Clara). These doors were formally opened on December 13, 2015.

January 10, 2016 We spend a lot on fitness (more than $22 billion on health clubs in 2013). And a lot of that cash is wasted. The treadmill in the bedroom becomes a large clothes hanger. You pay for the gym but don't go. How can you make sure your money is well spent? 1. Know thyself Figure out what will motivate you — not just for one week but on an ongoing basis. 2. Ritualize it "If you can attach healthy behaviors to other things you already value, it's much more easy to sustain," says James Hill, author of the book State of Slim. 3. Don't go all in Many people join gyms with a monthly membership fee because they think it'll be cheaper than just paying per visit. Yet it often doesn't work out that way— whether you want a gym membership or a treadmill: Start with a test-drive. Then keep your options open. Have a few exercise DVDs at home in case you just don't feel like going to the gym. 4. App it up There are thousands of apps to give your workout a boost that don't cost a cent, such as Simply Yoga or 7 minute workout. 5. Reward yourself A successful habit loops three things: the cue that alerts you that it's time to do it, the routine itself and the reward. The reward should be enjoyable and immediate. "[If you go] running this morning and say, 'Tonight I'll have a beer,' it's hard for your brain to make the link," he says. Eventually, the exercise can become the reward itself.

Most Holy Trinity Preschool is excited to announce the formation of an Afternoon Preschool Program. The afternoon program is offered from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Each of our programs accepts children from three years of age up to entry into first grade. At Most Holy Trinity Preschool, we help children learn about the alphabet, pre-reading, numbers, early math, science exploration, and our Catholic faith & traditions. Our teachers guide young children to develop the social skills that will lead to success in kindergarten and elementary school. Our goal is to encourage a lifelong love of learning by establishing a strong foundation of basic concepts and increasing each child's confidence in building positive relationships with teachers and peers. Most Holy Trinity Preschool has a variety of program options. We offer care Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. We have a full day program from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and two half-day programs: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. We also offer extended care hours.
