Let us keep them in our prayers.

My dear Parishioners, Who doesn’t like something new? Newness about any-thing—anyone —is attractive. Whether it is clothing or a job or a relationship, it’s something we get excited about. I suppose it is because newness fills us with joyful hope. Things are going to be different now when we experience newness; things are going to be better. When I was growing up, Easter was a time for new clothes that we’d wear for the first time to Mass on Easter Sunday morning. Easter, the celebration of the Lord’s resurrection from the dead, was the most perfect of all times to dress up in something new. It still is today. But the dressing up should not be limited to our clothing but focus more importantly on our very persons. For through his passion, death and resurrection, Jesus Christ brings new life to all who believe in him. The Scriptures we read during the Easter season are filled with that kind of newness. We are urged to get rid of the old self and put on the new; to set aside what-ever hinders us from enjoying a deeper relationship with Christ and our neighbor and open ourselves to a new and more exciting, more challenging way of life. This is something we can’t do by ourselves; it is some-thing that the risen Christ accomplishes in us but not without our wanting and willing it. In today’s Second Reading from the Book of Revelations we hear that “The One who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’” (21:5) Some scripture scholars tell us that this does not refer to things but to people. The im-plication being that heaven is not so much a dwelling place but a state of being—”an atmosphere created by the relationships among the saints with one another and with God.” The newness that comes from God never wears out but intensifies throughout eternity. But it has its beginnings here in time in the life of each one of us. If we are one with the Lord who makes all things new, then, we necessarily have to share in that creative task by bringing newness into the lives of others. Easter sea-son — a good time to ask ourselves in this regard: How am I doing? —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

QUINTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA 19 DE MAYO DE 2019

Page 4
