OUR PASTOR ’S PAGE

Proclaim the Gospel Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, For our youth, this time of year is both exhilarating (summer is soon!) and exhausting (final exam prep). For students, they just want to know what they need to know to pass the exam. No one wants summer school after all. Most teachers give some type of study guide so that the students can learn the essentials. It is the same with our spiritual lives: there are essentials. There are beliefs and practices that have to be maintained for us to be the people that God wants us to be, to be hap-py here on earth and ultimately to enjoy eternal life with him forever. On this Ascension Sunday, we recognize that Christ gives us all the essentials through the Church. Everything necessary for our salvation remains even after Christ Jesus ascended to the Father. That was the divine plan: that Christ would be with us until the end of time through the Church he founded. He promised us this. This is why Christ instituted the sacraments as instruments of His presence: so that we could go and be His presence in the world. Unfortunately, the sacraments are not valued as they should be. So many Catholics stay at home on Sundays; so many attempt marriage outside the Church; so many wait years and years be-fore baptizing their children — as if the sacraments were optional ways of experiencing Christ. It is important to remember that the sacraments aren’t our creation; we don’t own them, and, so, we can’t pick or choose or change them. God has given us the sacraments so that we can encounter Jesus in a special way, a way that people have done for 2,000 years and continue to do today. And for what? For us to bring Christ to the world. Yes, for the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, but so that these good works could lead others to Christ. Remember, in today’s gospel, Je-sus does not recommend that we spread the good news; Christ commanded we share the gospel with everyone. However, as Catholics, we are timid about doing this. We think that is a “Baptist” thing, or “Protestant” thing. Wrong. We were evangelizing the nations thousands of years before Protestantism existed. Have you ever heard of St. Paul the Apostle? St. Patrick? St. Augustine of Canterbury? St. Francis Xavier? These were all Catholic evangelists who converted nations. And why? Because they were in love with Christ. And yet we are so timid about even praying the bless-ing before meals at restaurants. We do not invite others to Mass because we assume they “won’t get anything out of it.” I can tell you that if someone had not invited my family and me to the Catholic Church, I would not be a priest much less a Catholic. We must share our testimonies, we must in-vite, we must invite others to experience in Christ what we have experienced: the falling in love with Him; the love that has changed our lives.

Yours in Christ, Fr. Lowry
