Con una extensión territorial de 130,373 km2, Nicaragua es el país más grande de la región centroamericana. With a total area of 130,373 km2 (50,337 sq. miles), Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. Nicaragua’s spectacular geography includes over 800 km (roughly 500 miles) of coastline along the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, 25 volcanic formations, over 20,000 km2 (7,722 sq. miles) of natural reserves, around 10,000 km2 (3,861 sq. miles) of lakes, lagoons and rivers, and an impressive 7 percent of the world’s biodiversity.

Nicaragua is a safe and beautiful country that enjoys an attractive business environment thanks to the consensus model between the country’s groups of interest. The light manufacturing industry is an important economic engine and one of the most dynamic sectors of Nicaragua’s economy. In recent years, manufacturing companies operating under the free trade zones regime have significantly and consistently contributed to the country’s total exports, representing almost 45 percent of these in 2016. Additionally, the manufacturing of goods has come a long way in diversifying its processes, becoming gradually more sophisticated.

Nicaragua’s light manufacturing industry has grown to include higher value-added operations, such as the production of automotive components. Nicaragua’s exports of auto wire harnesses represent a 25 percent of the country's free zones regima, becoming one of the most dynamic activities. Additionally, there is a wide variety of investment opportunities related to the manufacturing of other automotive components, such as carpeting, seat covers, and interiors, among others.

Two of the largest manufacturers of auto wire harnesses in the world –Yazaki from Japan and Dräxlmaier from Germany- have established successful operations in Nicaragua, supplying world renowned brands such as: Chrysler, Ford, BMW and Volkswagen.

La industria de manufactura ligera de Nicaragua ha crecido para incluir operaciones de mayor valor agregado, tales como la fabricación de componentes automotrices. Las exportaciones de arneses automotrices de Nicaragua representan el 25 por ciento de las exportaciones totales dentro del régimen de zonas francas, convirtiéndose en una de las actividades más importantes dentro del mismo. Adicionalmente, existe una gran variedad de oportunidades de inversión relacionadas a la fabricación de partes automotrices en Nicaragua, tales como alfombras, forros para asientos, interiores, entre otros.

Nicaragua está emergiendo como una plataforma muy atractiva para operaciones de manufactura de calzado de todo tipo. Actualmente, en el país se está manufacturando calzado de cuero, sandalias sintéticas, botas de hule y calzado de protección industrial. Actualmente, los principales mercados de exportación son los Estados Unidos, la Unión Europea, Costa Rica y Panamá. Así mismo, la posición geográfica de Nicaragua y la conectividad con el resto del mundo, además de los beneficios relacionados a los distintos acuerdos de acceso preferencial, aumentan su potencial para exportar a mercados no tradicionales.

Un nicho importante en el que Nicaragua resulta particularmente competitiva es la manufactura de calzado de cuero, ya que goza del beneficio de flexibilidad bajo el DR-CAFTA. Este beneficio le permite el uso de materia prima no originaria y aplica para el código arancelario 64.03 (HTS, por sus siglas en inglés).

Nicaragua is emerging as a very attractive platform for footwear manufacturing operations. Currently, the country exports leather footwear, synthetic sandals, rubber boots and industrial footwear. The main export markets are currently the United States, the European Union, Costa Rica and Panama. Likewise, Nicaragua’s strategic location and connectivity to the rest of the world, as well as the multiple benefits derived from its preferential access agreements, amplify its potential to export to less traditional markets.

An important niche where Nicaragua is particularly competitive is the manufacturing of leather footwear, since it has a flexibility benefit from DR-CAFTA. This benefit allows the usage of non-originary raw materials and applies for the HTS code 64.03.

La tendencia mundial de crecimiento demográfico, aunada a una mayor expectativa de vida en países desarrollados, impulsa el crecimiento del sector. La competitividad de Nicaragua, gracias a su mano de obra y posición geográfica estratégica –además de atractivos incentivos fiscales otorgados a operaciones industriales con giro exportador–, convierte al país en una plataforma emergente de gran atractivo para inversiones en esta industria, dada la proximidad con el mayor importador de estos productos: Estados Unidos.

Disposable medical devices production shows continuous growth in our country, as evidenced by the expansion of manufacturers such as Command Medical and Medisut, which specialize in the production of needles, catheters, cannulas and general surgical devices. Trends such as global population growth as well as higher life expectancy levels in developed countries constitute this industry’s key drivers. Ubicada en el corazón de las Américas, Nicaragua se encuentra a dos horas de vuelo de las principales ciudades de los Estados Unidos, con una respuesta de embarque de cuatro días de los puertos sureños de Estados Unidos y a una distancia de México de dos días por tierra, aproximadamente. Además, Nicaragua tiene acceso a sus países vecinos vía terrestre en menos de un día; Puerto Limón en Costa Rica y Puerto Cortés en Honduras están a tan solo 13 y 15 horas, respectivamente, lo que además la convierte en un excelente centro de distribución para toda la región centroamericana.

Located right in the heart of the Americas, Nicaragua is just two hours away from the main hubs of the United States, with a shipping lead-time of four days to southern US ports and approximately two days by land to Mexico. Additionally, Nicaragua can access its neighboring countries by land within a day; Puerto Limón in Costa Rica and Puerto Cortés in Honduras are only 13 and 15 hours away, respectively, which makes Nicaragua an excellent distribution center for the entire Central American region.

Nicaragua es la plataforma de inversiones y exportaciones más competitiva de las Américas para operaciones que requieren procesos intensivos en mano de obra.

Específicamente en el régimen especial de zonas francas se realizan ajustes al salario mínimo a través de un modelo de diálogo y consenso entre el Gobierno de Nicaragua, el sector privado y los trabajadores. Este modelo ha dado origen a los llamados “Acuerdos Tripartitos”, que se han venido realizando con éxito cada tres años desde 2009 y cuya tercera edición está vigente para el período 2018-2022.

For companies operating within the free zones regime specifically, the minimum wage is periodically updated as part of the Tripartite Alliance Model of dialogue and consensus between the Government, business sector and workers. This model has fostered the “Tripartite Agreements”, which have been renewed every three years and whose current edition is valid for the 2018-2022 period.

Nicaragua has an excellent business climate based on a solid and pro investment legal framework. The Foreign Investment Promotion Law (Law 344) guarantees: free currency convertibility, freedom to repatriate all capital goods and profits, access to financing from local banks, protection of intellectual property rights and the non-discriminatory treatment to foreign investors. Additionally, the law establishes that there are no minimum or maximum investment amounts.

Nicaragua also has a Mediation and Arbitration Law (Law 540), which provides expeditious solutions to disputes in a simple manner, where differences are resolved through a third party, outside of the national judiciary system. Such solutions are considered final and legally binding before competent courts, since they are protected under national law.

Nicaragua cuenta con un excelente clima de negocios que se basa en un marco regulatorio en pro de la inversión. La Ley de Promoción de Inversión Extranjera (Ley 344) garantiza: libre convertibilidad de la moneda, libertad de repatriar todo capital y utilidades, acceso a financiamiento en bancos locales, protección a los derechos de propiedad intelectual y la no discriminación contra inversionistas extranjeros. Adicionalmente, la ley no establece montos mínimos o máximos de inversión.

Nicaragua también cuenta con una Ley de Mediación y Arbitraje (Ley 540), la cual provee soluciones expeditas a disputas de una manera sencilla, donde las diferencias son resueltas por un tercero, fuera del sistema judicial nacional. Dichas soluciones se consideran finales y ejecutables ante las cortes competentes, ya que están protegidas por la ley nacional.

Con vistas hacia la consolidación de un clima de negocios más competitivo, el Gobierno de Nicaragua ofrece una serie de paquetes de incentivos fiscales para los proyectos de inversión relacionados a manufactura ligera. Estos paquetes son:

• Exportaciones exoneradas de Impuesto al Valor Agregado (IVA) e Impuesto Selectivo de Consumo (ISC).

• Créditos tributarios a los anticipos de impuesto sobre la renta (IR) anual equivalente al 1.5% del valor FOB de exportaciones (con aval de la administración tributaria).

• Exports are treated with 0% Value Added Tax (IVA, for its acronym in Spanish) and 0% Selective Consumption Tax (ISC, for its acronym in Spanish).

• Tax credit to the advance payments on annual Income Tax (with previous authorization from the tax administration) in an amount equal to 1.5% of FOB value of exports.

Nicaragua is internationally recognized for its high levels of personal safety. Several indicators rank Nicaragua as one of the safest countries in the Western hemisphere. The 2015 homicide rate in Nicaragua was of 8 people for every 100,000 inhabitants.

Astro Nicaragua es un parque industrial de zona franca que inició operaciones en el año 2004. Actualmente, el parque ofrece a sus clientes, quienes en su mayoría son empresas extranjeras, el alquiler de naves industriales para la manufactura de textiles, así como operaciones de agro-industria, entre otras actividades.

Algunos de los factores que motivaron a Astro a invertir en Nicaragua fueron la seguridad, el ambiente de negocios y la estabilidad económica de la cual goza el país. Según el señor Gregorio Kim, gerente del parque, la mayor ventaja que tiene Nicaragua en comparación a otros países es la seguridad. "Nosotros mostramos a nuestros clientes, quienes visitan por primera vez Nicaragua, que este es un país en crecimiento y el ejemplo lo tenemos en nuestras empresas usuarias, quienes en los últimos años han crecido hasta dos veces en volumen de exportación y en el mejor de los casos, hasta cinco veces", dijo el señor Kim.

Astro Nicaragua is a free trade zone park that started operations in 2004. It currently offers its clients, most of whom are foreign companies, warehouses for apparel manufacturing as well as agroindustry operations, among other activities.

Some of the factors that encouraged Astro to invest in Nicaragua were citizen safety, the business environment and the economic stability the country enjoys. According to Mr. Gregorio Kim, Astro’s general manager, the biggest advantage Nicaragua has compared to other countries in the region is its safety. "We show our clients, who visit Nicaragua for the first time, that Nicaragua is a growing economy, and the best example we have is our existing tenants’ base, made up of companies which in recent years have doubled their exports, and in some cases even grown up to five times", said Mr. Kim.

Otra ventaja que señala el señor Kim es que Nicaragua tiene una mano de obra calificada y con deseos de superación. Astro Nicaragua actualmente ofrece oportunidades para que sus colaboradores se desarrollen académicamente, entre las que se destaca un programa de becas y se están considerando otros programas para completar la educación primaria.

Para los próximos cinco años Astro espera crecer un 10 por ciento anual, lo que quiere decir que seguirá construyendo naves industriales para poder atraer mayor inversión al país.

Another advantage, according to Mr. Kim, is that Nicaragua has a skilled workforce with strong desire to excel. Astro currently provides opportunities for its collaborators to develop their academic skills, such a scholarship program, and is currently considering other programs and benefits for those who wish to finish their primary education.

For the next five years, Astro expects to grow 10 percent annually, which means that it will continue to build even more industrial buildings to attract more investment into the country.
