Los Elefantes

Los elefantes son el animal más grande que vive en tierra firme. ¡Pesan hasta 12,000 libras y pueden medir 12 pies de altura! Los elefantes viven por mucho tiempo, hasta 70 años.

Hay dos tipos principales de elefante: el africano y el asiático. Los elefantes asiáticos tienen más pelo. Los elefantes africanos son más grandes y tienen las orejas y los colmillos más grandes.

Los demás elefantes del grupo le ayudan a la elefanta mamá a cuidar a su bebé.

Los elefantes recién nacidos se llaman cachorros. Pesan más o menos 250 libras y miden dos pies y medio de altura cuando nacen.

Las elefantes hembras viajan en grupos que se llaman manadas. Una manada está compuesta de hembras. Los elefantes varones suelen vivir solos. 4

Los elefantes son buenos nadaderos, pero no pueden saltar ni correr muy rápido.

Los elefantes se bañan con barro y se cubren con barro mojado para proteger su piel del sol y de insectos que muerden.

Los elefantes tienen orejas enormes. Agitan sus orejas grandes cuando hace mucho calor, haciendo una brisa que les ayuda a refrescarse.

Los colmillos del elefante son hechos de marfil. Usan sus colmillos para muchas cosas, como para escarbar y buscar su comida.

Los colmillos de los elefantes africanos pueden medir más de diez pies de largos y pesar más de dos cientas libras.

Los elefantes son herbívoros, lo cual significa que comen plantas. Pasan 16 horas al día comiendo. ¡Un elefante adulto puede comer de 300 a 600 libras de comida en un día! Pero su cuerpo usa menos de la mitad de lo que come. ¿Qué pasará con el resto?

Los elefantes tienen trompas largas. Usan las trompas para echar un chorro de agua en la boca y para recoger la comida.

Our aim with this series of books is to weave together two significant goals in the design of early reading materials—that the books are both instructional and engaging. Books designed to develop reading skills often end up feeling like work to read, while books designed to be interesting are often too difficult for beginning readers. These books for beginning readers support phonics-based classroom instruction by including a high concentration of phonetically regular words, as well as the most commonly used sight words. However, the books are written using pictures and stories that make sense, with simple language structures supporting independent reading and language development. Our intent is to produce books that kids want to read, think about, talk about and read again.
