Las Buenas Noticias Sobre el Matrimonio CONFERENCIA ADVENTISTA SOBRE INVESTIGACIÓN Y PRÁCTICA FAMILIAR

Del 20 al 22 de Julio de 2017 BIENVENIDO

Bienvenidos a la quinta Conferencia Adventista anual sobre Investiga-

ción y Práctica Familiar (ACFRP). Desde 1975, se ha celebrado un evento de

fortalecimiento de la familia en el campus de la Universidad de Andrews, pa-

trocinado por la Escuela de Educación, el Seminario Teológico Adventista del

Séptimo Día, los Departamentos de Ministerios de la Familia de la Conferen-

cia General y de la División Norteamericana o una combinación de estas enti-

dades. El propósito siempre ha sido celebrar la educación de nuestros consti-

tuyentes acerca de la importancia de ministrarle a las familias en la Iglesia

Adventista del Séptimo Día.

La conferencia de este año promete ser excelente, con destacados

plenarios y oradores principales. Ofreceremos más talleres que nunca y esta-

mos encantados de tener talleres en inglés y español este año, por primera

vez. Esto le permitirá a los participantes escoger entre una variedad más am-

plia de temas informativos y desafiantes.

Tenemos el privilegio de tener ala autora de "Las buenas noticias so-

bre el matrimonio", la analista social Sra. Shaunti Feldhahn y el Dr. Derek J.

Morris, presidente del Canal Hope (Hope Channel, Inc.).

The Good News about Marriage ADVENTIST CONFERENCE ON FAMILY RESEARCH & PRACTICE

JULY 20th -22nd, 2017 WELCOME

Welcome to the fifth annual Adventist Conference on Family Research

and Practice (ACFRP). Historically since 1975 a family strengthening event has

been held on the campus of Andrews University originally sponsored by the

School of Education, the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, the De-

partments of Family Ministries at the General Conference and the North Amer-

ican Division of Family Ministries, or a combination of these entities. The pur-

pose has always been to celebrate the education our constituencies about the

importance of ministry to families in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

This year’s conference promises to be an excellent one with outstand-

ing plenary and keynote speakers, offerings of research and practice work-

shops. We have more workshops than ever before and are ecstatic to have

both English and Spanish workshops this year. This allows participants to select

from a broader variety of informative and challenging topics.

We are privileged to have the author of “The Good News about Mar-

riage” and Social Analyst Mrs. Shaunti Feldhahn and Dr. Derek J. Morris who is

the President of Hope Channel, Inc.

The success of this event is due to the collaborative effort of the De-

partment of Discipleship and Religious Education at the Seminary, the Depart-

ment Behavioral Science and Social Work at Andrews University, the Family

Ministries Departments at the General Conference and the North American

Division, and AdventSource. Thus, it attracts faculty and students throughout

the campus community, family ministry leaders, church members from Lake

Union, the NAD, and throughout the world. If you are in any of these groups,

we believe your ministry will be enriched as you participate in the various

presentations on ministry to families.

Our prayer is that you will experience the loving embrace of Jesus

Christ while you are here. Enjoy the learning, soak in the fellowship, savor the

Shaunti recibió su diploma de posgrado de la Univer-sidad de Harvard y fue analista en Wall Street antes de con-vertirse en una investigadora social y autora de “best-sellers” inesperadamente. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Shaunti Feldhahn

Shaunti received her graduate degree from Harvard University and was an analyst on Wall Street before unexpectedly becoming a social researcher and best-selling author. Today, she applies her analytical skills to investigating eye-opening, life-changing truths about relationships, both at home and in the work-place. Her groundbreaking research-based books, such as For Women Only, have sold more than 2 million cop-ies in 23 languages and are widely read in homes, coun-seling centers and corporations worldwide. Where the “Only” series revealed the often-

unseen needs of men and women, her newest multi-year research projects, published in The Surprising Secrets of Highly Happy Marriages and The Good News About Marriage, are giving couples and the culture hope that great mar-riages are possible, likely, and simpler than most people think.

Shaunti’s findings have been featured in media as diverse as The Today

Show and Focus on the Family, The New York Times and Mom Life Today. Shaunti and her husband Jeff live in Atlanta with their teenage daughter, their pre-teen son, and two cats who think they are dogs.

Derek John Morris Derek Morris currently serves as President of

Hope Channel, Inc., and host of Hope Sabbath School, an in-depth interactive study of the Word of God broadcast worldwide on Hope Channel. Prior to join-ing the Hope Channel team, he served as associate secretary of the General Conference Ministerial Asso-ciation and Editor of Ministry, an international journal for pastors. Born in England, his greatest joy is found in helping people to experience a life-changing en-counter with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Morris has two doctoral degrees: a D.Min in Prac-

Reconocimiento de Servicio Distinguido de la NAD Los Dres. Roger y Margaret Dudley

El Dr. Roger L. Dudley ha trabajado con el Instituto del Ministerio de la Iglesia en el Semina-rio Teológico de la Universidad de Andrews du-rante 33 años-director durante 29 años, jubilán-dose en 2013. También enseñó en el departa-mento del Ministerio Cristiano durante 20 años, en las áreas del ministerio juvenil, vida familiar, psicología pastoral einvestigaciones de religión. Tiene un Ed.D. Es autor, coautor y redactor de 15

libros, la mayoría pertenecientes a algún aspecto de la vida familiar, y ha pu-blicado más de 150 artículos en revistas científicas, profesionales y populares.

Dra. Margaret D. (Peggy) Dudley se desempeñó como Consejera Pro-fesional Licenciada en el Estado de Michigan hasta su jubilación. Ella tiene un Ph.D. en Consejería y Servicios Humanos de la Universidad Andrews (1988) y ha sido miembro de la Asociación de Asesoramiento de Michigan, la Asocia-ción de Personal de la Universidad de Michigan y la Asociación de Personal Adventista de Estudiantes. NAD FAMILY MINISTRIES DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENTS Drs. Roger and Margaret Dudley

Dr. Roger L. Dudley has served with the Institute of Church Ministry at Andrews University Theological Seminary for 33 years–director for 29 years--retiring in 2013. He also taught in the Chris-tian Ministry department for 20 years in the fields of youth ministry, family life, pastoral psychology, and research in religion. He holds an Ed.D. in Edu-cational Psychology and Counseling from Andrews University (1977) He is the author, co-author, or

editor of 15 books–most pertaining to some aspect of family life–and has pub-lished over 150 articles in scholarly, professional, or popular journals.

Dr. Margaret D. (Peggy) Dudley served as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Michigan until her retirement. She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling and Human Services from Andrews University (1988) and has held membership in the Michigan Counseling Association, the Michigan College Per-sonnel Association, and the Adventist Student Personnel Association. She also worked as a registered nurse. Peggy served for over 11 years at the Andrews University Counseling Center where she worked with students, faculty, and staff, specializing in relationship and personal concerns, vocational guidance, pre-marital preparation, and women’s issues. In 2000 she was presented with the Excellence in Service Award by the Adventist Student Personnel Associa-tion. Now retired, she continues to serve in several volunteer positions for the Pioneer Memorial Church.

Peggy and Roger and have co-authored two books: Married and Glad of It and Maximum Marriage: 28 Couples Share Their Secrets for a Happy Mar-riage, as well as a number of articles in scholarly and denominational journals on various aspects of family life. They have personally conducted dozens of marriage enhancement seminars as well as making joint presentations at churches, retreats, and camp meetings on marriage, communication, youth, and other family life topics in many areas of the United States as well as inter-nationally.

They have one married daughter, Cheryl Zwart, a married grandson, Chad Cotta, and a nine-year-old great-grandson, Oliver Cotta. They also enjoy the love and companionship of their little dog, Morkie.

Dr. Jeffrey and Pattiejean Brown

Pattiejean (née McMahon) was born in Bermuda and graduated from Atlantic Union College (BA Liberal Arts, BSc Behavioral Science). Jeffrey was born in England, of Jamaican parents, and graduated from Newbold College (BA) and Andrews University (M.Div, PhD Religious Education, family life and counseling emphasis).

Pattiejean served as Bermuda Conference Family Ministries Assistant and director of Ministerial Spouses. She is now employed with the General Conference Human Relations department. Jeffrey pastored in Canada, served as Bermuda Conference president and family ministries director, director of the Bradford Cleveland Brooks Leadership Center at Oakwood University, and editor of Family Life. He now serves as associate editor of Ministry and associ-ate secretary of the General Conference Ministerial Association.

They also have 12 years overseas experience. Pattiejean worked in England as a long-term care worker. Jeffrey served in the Trans-European Di-vision as pastor, counselor, and director of Pastoral Studies at Newbold Col-lege, and in the West-Central Africa Division as a student missionary in Ghana.

Pattiejean has authored What On Earth Am I Doing? Leadership Les-sons For Clergy Spouses and Jeffrey has authored Single and Gifted. Together they have authored Total Marriage, A Guide To Parenting, and The Love Sea-sons. They are blessed with two children, Kristle (MA mental health counsel-ing, Florida) and Jamel (MBA, California).

They are certified with Prepare/Enrich and Marriage Commitment Leadership from John and Millie Youngberg, their mentors in family life educa-tion. Jeffrey is also a Certified Family Life Educator. They have been privileged to minister in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

John Mathews John Mathews, un ministro ordenado, como

John Mathews an ordained minister who as a boy dreamed of becoming a country music singer. His ministry has included serving in Florida, Alabama, Iowa, Missouri, Tennessee, and Nebraska. He has conducted stewardship and family finance seminars throughout the North American Division since 2010. John is a grad-uate of Southern Adventist University and holds a Doc-tor of Ministry degree from Andrews University. He is the principle author of the 2018 Adult Sabbath School Quarterly, Live Stewardship. . . Live Happy, co-author of Smoky Mountain Rescue, recorded the gospel CD Keeper of My Heart and along with Janice the force

behind the Stewardship Jack book series.

He maintains the following certifications: North American Divi-sion Stewardship Certification, Certified Stewardship Professional; (CSP) from Christian Leadership Alliance, North American Division Planned Giving and Trust Service Certification, and Certified Specialist in Planned Giving; (CSPG) California State University. His passion is teaching stewardship principles, espe-cially as they relate to the spirituality of money management in postmodern culture. John is married to Janice Schram Mathews, MSN, a Nurse Practitioner. They have one married daughter, Angela, and are proud grandparents. He en-joys hiking, running, playing the guitar, singing country gospel concerts, and sleeping late in the morning.

Ben Maxson Nacido en Caracas, Venezuela de padres misioneros, Ben Maxson ha pasado gran parte de su ministerio pastoral en el Noroeste y el Sur de los Estados Unidos. Habla con fluidez el español, y volvió a sus raíces en América del Sur para servir en dos misiones allí. El Dr. Maxson ocupó el cargo de Director de Mayordomía en la sede mundial de los Adventistas del Séptimo Día de 1995 a 2004. Durante este tiempo, des-

Ben Maxson Born in Caracas, Venezuela of mis-sionary parents, Ben Maxson has spent much of his pastoral ministry in the North-west and Southern United States. Fluent in Spanish, he also gravitated back to his roots in South America to serve in two mis-sions there. Dr. Maxson held the position of Director of Stewardship at the World headquarters of Seventh-day Adventists from 1995 to 2004. During this time, he

discovered and developed a new paradigm emphasizing biblical stewardship from a discipleship perspective and shared this vision with the world church. Currently Ben is serving as Senior Pastor of the Paradise California Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Ben is married to Mary Maxson, who served as the Director of the Women’s Ministry Department for the North American Division, and now is an Associate Pastor at the Paradise Seventh-day Adventist Church. They have two adult children and one grandchild.

Ben enjoys reading, developing ministry materials, and is an avid scuba diver. He also enjoys digital photography and golf. Ben has special interests in the areas of spirituality, discipleship, and leadership training, and serves as a lead professor in Andrews University Seminary Doctor of Ministry cohort for Spiritual Growth and Discipleship.
