Llega la hora de dar carpetazo al 2008. Es tiempo de hacer balances, sacar conclusiones, reflexionar sobre el camino recorrido y sentar las bases con las que afrontar el nuevo paso del calendario. La Bocha concluye un año intenso, en el que su agenda se ha quedado pequeña para aglutinar tanta actividad. Argentina, Dubai, Suiza, Francia, Inglaterra, Sotogrande…, allá donde hubo polo estuvo La Bocha, siempre al pie del cañón, sin entender ni de crisis, ni de fronteras, apostando, siempre, al máximo, por un deporte que sentimos como nuestro.

Retransmisiones en directo on line a pie de cancha, cobertura gráfica de los eventos más destacados, entrevistas con los mejores, reportajes o vídeos de los momentos claves de la temporada, hacen que hoy podamos presumir, siempre con humildad, de un trabajo bien hecho.

Y es que, mientras el mundo gira en torno a la denominada ‘recesión’, nosotros lo hacemos en torno a la bocha, que no cesa de rodar. Los tiempos son duros, sí, pero el mundo del polo merece el esfuerzo. Por eso, para 2009 los retos serán más y mejores. Desde aquí ponemos en firme nuestro compromiso de seguir adelante y dar a nuestros lectores una revista de calidad hecha por y para el polo. ¡Que ruede La Bocha!

The time has come to close the file on 2008. It’s time to take stock, come to conclusions, reflect on the path taken and lay the foundations for what is to come. La Bocha European Polo comes to the end of an intense year in which its diary has been too small for so much activity. Dubai, Argentina, England, Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Uruguay, Spain… wherever the polo was, La Bocha was there ready and waiting, unaware of crises and geographical boundaries, and always fully committed to a sport that is close to our hearts.

Online pitch-side coverage of the finals of the world’s main tournaments, photographic coverage of the most important events, interviews with the best, reports and videos of the key moments of the season, mean that today we can humbly profess that we have done a good job.

Because, while the world focuses on the so-called ‘recession’, we have kept our eyes on the polo ball, which never stops rolling. Times are hard, yes, but the polo world deserves the effort. This is why the challenges in 2009 will be greater and better. On this note, we would like to reiterate our commitment to keep up the good work and give our readers a quality magazine produced by, and for, the polo scene. Let’s get the ball rolling!

Una infracción de lugar, muy cerca de los mimbres y convertida por Javier Novillo Astrada, le dio el triunfo por 15 a 14 y el título del Abierto de Hurlingham al cuarteto de La Aguada.

La Aguada derrotó a Ellerstina, quien fuera campeón en la última edición del torneo y Pilará eliminó en chukker suplementario a La Dolfina.

Pilará llegó a la final con mayor cantidad de goles a lo largo del torneo, 54 en tres partidos (un promedio de 18 tantos por encuentro), al tiempo que el conjunto de los hermanos Novillo Astrada había convertido 45 tantos en la misma

cantidad de partidos y llegó a esta final con un promedio de 15 anotaciones por encuentro.

Entre otros números que arrojó la 115° Abierto de Hurlingham se destaca que el gol marcado por Javier Novillo Astrada y que le dio el triunfo a La Aguada, fue el número 330 del torneo, por lo que el Abierto de Hurlinghan tuvo un promedio de 25,3 goles por

encuentro (se jugaron 13 en total).

Como se mencionó anteriormente, fue Pilará el equipo con mejor promedio de goles en tanto que en la segunda ubicación de esta estadística se ubican cuatro equipos: La Aguada, La Dolfina, Ellerstina e Indios Chapaleufú II. Todas estas formaciones convirtieron 45 tantos en tres partidos por lo que marcaron a razón de 15 tantos por cada partido de clasificación jugado.

Black Watch Polo Team obtuvo un promedio de 13 tantos por encuentro, Trenque Lauquen Air France 10 y por último el equipo de menor handicap, El Paraíso, convirtió 27 tantos y su

promedio fue de 9 goles por cada encuentro.El partido con más goles fue jugado el domingo 19 de octubre en el cual Pilará derrotó a Black Wacth por 19 a 16 (35 goles). Por su parte, el partido de menor cantidad de goles fue el que jugaron Black Watch y Trenque Lauquen, que ganó el primero por 12 a 10, y donde se marcaron 22 tantos.●

disputa en Buenos Aires finalmente se pudo jugar el partido decisivo entre los equipos que comandan los

hermanos Facundo y Gonzalo Pieres y el cuarteto de los Novillo Astrada.

Francisco Dorignac, presidente de Tortugas y también de la Asociación Argentina de Polo manifestó previo a la entrega de premios que “el partido fue una demostración de precalentamiento del nivel de esta Triple Corona. Quiero agradecer a la AAP, los jugadores y Hurlingham por coordinar la tarea para que este torneo pueda terminar pese al mal tiempo”.

Además de los agradecimientos del titular de Tortugas también vale mencionar a la organización del torneo que mostró sus puntos altos en el estado de las canchas, elogiada por todos los jugadores, y en la notable concurrencia de público en la final, 5500 espectadores, que además de disfrutar de un gran partido tuvieron también un show musical y fuegos artificiales.

LA FINAL

Al igual que en el 2007 Ellerstina se llevó Tortugas y ratificó sus intenciones que ganar todo lo que juegue. El partido comenzó desfavorable para el equipo de los Pieres, Pablo Mac

Donough (que volvió tras una lesión) y Juan Martín Nero, la nueva estrella del equipo y que en la final brilló con su juego. La Aguada arrancó con todo y logró sacar una ventaja de tres goles en el primer chukker.

Pero lejos de desesperarse el defensor del título fue acomodando su juego y volcando la balanza a su favor para empatar el partido en el cuarto chukker y seguir de largo en los restantes períodos del partido.

Además lo hizo desplegando su juego, ese que lo llevó a brillar en la temporada 2005 donde estuvo cerca de alcanzar la Triple Corona.

Pero esta definición del Abierto de Tortugas también confirmó el buen ensamble de Juan Martín Nero al equipo.

Nero comenzó a demostrar en Tortugas, ahora con su nueva camiseta, la clase de jugador que es.

Como si ello fuera poco, su principal figura, Facundo Pieres se llevó el galardón de goleador del torneo con 20 tantos.

En definitiva, Ellerstina fue el merecido campeón y la mira vuelve a estar puesta en la Triple Corona que se le escapó en el 2005 y 2007. Seguramente cuando esté leyendo esta nota la incógnita de si la tercera fue la vencida se habrá desvelado. ●

Following a week of postponements due to intense rain on the competition’s fixture days in Buenos Aires, finally the decisive match between the team led by the brothers Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres and the Novillo Astradas’ quartet could be played.Francisco Dorignac, chairman of Tortugas and also of the Argentine Polo Association, declared before the prize ceremony that “the match was a warm-up demonstration of the standards of this Triple Crown. I want to thank the AAP (the Argentine Polo Association), the players and Hurlingham

for coordinating the task of ensuring that this tournament could go ahead despite the bad weather”. Aside from the acknowledgements from the Tortugas chairman, the high points of the tournament were the good condition of the fields, praised by all of the players, and the large crowd present at the final, of 5,500 spectators, who in addition to the big match also had the chance to enjoy a musical show and fireworks.

The fi nalLike in 2007, Ellerstina clinched the Tortugas title and confirmed their intention to win the whole lot. The match started unfavourably for the Pieres brothers, Pablo Mac Donough (returning after an injury) and Juan Martín Nero, the team’s new star player who performed brilliantly on the field of play. La Aguada came out firing on all cylinders and managed to gain a three-goal lead in the

first chukka.But far from losing hope, the title defenders adapted their game and tipped the match in their favour, drawing level in the fourth chukka and stretching ahead in the remaining periods of the match.The did so by opening up their game, playing like they did in the 2005 season when they came close to clinching the Triple Crown.The Tortugas Open final also confirmed that Juan Martín Nero has settled well into the team. Wearing his new shirt, Nero started to show his true class at Tortugas.As if that weren’t enough, their main man, Facundo Pieres, won the prize for top-scorer in the tournament with 20 goals.In short, Ellerstina were the deserving champions and their sights are set once again on the Triple Crown that eluded them in 2005 and 2007. na vez más Sotogrande contó en agosto la atención del mejor polo de Europa y con ello a los mejores jugadores del mundo que, encabezados por Adolfo Cambiaso, ofrecieron un gran espectáculo para los amantes del polo y del deporte en general.

Ahmibah, cuarteto integrado por el patrón, Bahar Jefri, Pablo Mac Donough, Valerio Zubiaurre e Iñaki Laprida, hizo historia en Sotogrande al llevarse los tres trofeos de la temporada del Alto Handicap: Oro, Plata y Bronce. Fue el merecido premio a un equipo que funcionó a la perfección en lo colectivo y que tuvo en Pablo Mac Donough a un jugador sobresaliente. El jugador mostró su calidad en las canchas de Los Pinos y demostró el porqué lleva con merecimiento los 10 goles de

handicap que posee. Además obtuvo, sin discusión alguna, el premio al mejor jugador del certamen.

Ahmibah no lo tuvo fácil en su camino hacia la consagración. Primero tuvo que derrotar a Loro Piana en semifinales, equipo que llegaba con Adolfo Cambiaso como principal figura y con la firme intención de llevarse el trofeo máximo. Pero lo hizo: Ahmibah derrotó, y merecidamente, a Loro Piana y llegó a la final, donde lo esperaba Ayala, campeón del 2007.

Una vez más el cuarteto de Jefri, Mac Donough, Laprida y Zubiaurre mostró toda su calidad y su notable funcionamiento colectivo para derrotar a Ayala 11 a 10 y levantar la Copa de Oro. La Copa Subsidiaria quedó en manos de La Varzea, que derrotó en la final a Scapa por 15 a 8.

El 37º Torneo Internacional Hyundai de Polo, que se jugó del 27 de julio al 31 de agosto en las canchas del Santa

María Polo Club, culminó con la consagración de Ahmibah como el mejor equipo de la temporada.

Mediano y Bajo Handicap

Easy MH Bland se consagró como campeón de la Copa de Oro de Bajo Handicap y Woodchester hizo lo propio en el Mediano Handicap, finales que le pusieron el punto final al 37º Torneo Internacional Hyundai de Polo.

Easy sumó su segundo título consecutivo en el Bajo Handicap al haber ganado también la Copa de Plata y Woodchester, con una gran actuación de Facundo Castagnola, se llevó el troféo más importante de la temporada en el Mediano.

Easy MH Bland se consagró como el mejor equipo de la temporada en el Bajo Handicap al sumar su segundo título consecutivo (había ganado una semana atrás la Copa de Plata) al vencer en la final a Kia El Corzo por 12 a 7 y levantar así la Copa de Oro.

Woodchester hizo lo propio en el Mediano Handicap tras derrotar en una vibrante definición a Leones 12-11 en chukker suplementario y con un golazo de su mejor jugador, Facundo Castagnola.

Balance

A la hora del balance, el 37º Torneo Internacional Hyundai de Polo tuvo un sabor especial gracias a un par de ‘condimentos’. El primero fue la presentación de las nuevas instalaciones de Los Pinos, un gran pabellón que ofició como sede principal del torneo y que congregó los partidos del Alto Handicap y las finales del Mediano y Bajo.

El segundo, la presencia de las estrellas del polo mundial: Cambiaso, Mac Donough, los hermanos Sebastián y Agustín Merlos, Eduardo Novillo, Marcos Di Paola, David Stirling y Piki Díaz Alberdi fueron algunos de los destacados polistas que brillaron en Sotogrande. El tercero, la buena organización deportiva que presentó el evento. Los tres niveles de juego se dividieron en tres sedes (Alto en Los Pinos, Mediano en Río y Bajo en Puente de Hierro) y ello facilitó el seguimiento de los

partidos tanto para el público como para la prensa. Se respetaron el orden y horarios de partidos y eso también fue un punto a favor de la temporada.

Faltaron al menos un par de equipos más en el Alto Handicap para darle mayor competitividad y emoción, como sí sucedió en el Mediano, además de una mejor organización a la hora de los podios, sobre todo en el Alto, que es cuando más público y prensa se congregan.●

headed by Adolfo Cambiaso, put on a great show for lovers of polo and

sport in general.

Ahmibah, the quartet made up of patron Bahar Jefri, Pablo Mac Donough, Valerio Zubiaurre and Iñaki Laprida, made history in Sotogrande by clinching the three trophies of the high-goal season: the Gold, Silver and Bronze

Cups. It was a well-deserved prize for a side which functioned perfectly as a team and had Pablo Mac Donough as their outstanding player.

Mac Donough demonstrated his quality on the Los Pinos fields and showed why he deserves his 10-goal handicap. He also received the prize for the undisputed best player of the competition.

Ahmibah did not have an easy road to victory. First they had to beat Loro Piana in the semi-finals, a team which had

Adolfo Cambiaso as their star player and were intent on clinching the big title. But they did it. Ahmibah deservedly beat Loro Piana and reached the final, where Ayala, the 2007 champions, awaited them.

Once again the quartet of Jefri, Mac Donough, Laprida and Zubiaurre demonstrated all of their quality and outstanding team-play to beat Ayala by 11 goals to 10 and clinch the Gold Cup. The Subsidiary Cup was won by La Varzea, who defeated Scapa in the final by 15 goals to 8.

Medium- and Low-goal

Easy MH Bland were proclaimed champions of the Low-goal Gold Cup and Woodchester had the same success in the Medium-goal, the finals of which brought the 37th Hyundai International Polo Tournament to a close.

Easy clinched their second consecutive title in the Low-goal competition having also won the Silver Cup, and Woodchester, with a great performance from Facundo Castagnola, went away with the most important trophy of the Medium-goal season.

Easy MH Bland established themselves as the best team of the Low-goal season when they secured their second consecutive title (having won the Silver Cup one week earlier) by beating Kia El Corzo in the final by 12 goals to 7 to clinch the Gold Cup.

Woodchester were equally as successful in the Medium-goal after beating Leones in a vibrant final by 12 goals to 11 in the extra chukka with a superb goal from their best player, Facundo Castagnola.

Taking stock

When it comes to taking stock of the 37th Hyundai International Polo Tournament, it had a special flavour thanks to a couple of ‘condiments’. The first was the presentation of the new Los Pinos facilities. The big pavilion acting as the main venue for the tournament hosted the High-goal matches and the finals of the Medium- and Low-goal competitions.

The second condiment was the presence of the stars of world polo. Cambiaso, Mac Donough, the brothers Sebastián and Agustín Merlos, Eduardo Novillo, Marcos Di Paola, David Stirling and Piki Díaz Alberdi were just some of the outstanding polo players displaying their talent in Sotogrande.

The third was the good organisation of the event. The three levels of play were divided between three venues (the High-goal at Los Pinos, the Medium-goal at Río and the Low-goal at Puente de Hierro), making it easier to follow the matches for both the public and the press. The order and times of the matches were kept to, which was another point in the season’s favour.

The High-goal competition was short of at least a couple more teams to provide the competitiveness and excitement that could be found in the Medium-goal, and the organisation when it came to the podiums could have been better, particularly in the High-goal in which there were bigger crowds and more press.●

The Bisontes de Santander team were crowned champions of the Spanish Absolute Championships, held at Club de Polo Sant Antoni in Vilabrau, in the Gerona province, thereby securing their second title in a row in this competition.

Bisontes defeated Casinos de Barcelona by 8 goals to 4 in the final. The match was very hard-fought and it wasn’t until the third chukka that the quartet made up of Javier Carabaza, Gonzalo Muñoz Escassi, Mario Gómez and Santiago Moyano managed to get ahead on the scoreboard.

Real Club de Polo de Barcelona finished third in the tournament after beating the hosts Sant Antoni de Viladrau by 7 goals to 4.Bisontes de Santander, Casinos de Barcelona, Real Club de Polo Barcelona and Sant Antoni de Viladrau were the teams taking part in the tournament, which was well attended by the public throughout the competition.

(Sztarkman, N´Gomou, Musso y Ambroggio) se adjudicó

la edición 2008 del Open de Francia tras vencer en chukker

suplementario al equipo de Jaeger LeCoultre (Fabre, Clemente y Juan Martín Zavaleta y Morley) por 7 a 6.

Los cuartetos de Polo de Deauville y Jaeger LeCoultre mantuvieron en vilo durante la gran final al numeroso

público que se dio cita en el Polo Club Du Domaine de Chantilly, sede del Open de Francia, que estuvo reservado para equipos de hasta 16 goles.

Durante los cinco chukkers reglamentarios los equipos no lograron sacarse diferencias y la paridad fue el común denominador. Solamente en el segundo chukker, y en el final, lógicamente, fue cuando existieron diferencias, mínimas por cierto, entre un equipo y otro.

En el segundo chukker fue Jaeger LeCoultre quien se puso arriba en el marcador (3-2) luego de haber finalizado empatados en un gol el primer período.

El tercero fue 4-4, el cuarto 5-5 y el quinto terminó con el resultado de 6 a 6 que forzó el chukker suplementario.

En ese período y con un gol de penal de Darío Musso, Polo de Deauville logró el gol que le significó el título del Open de Francia.

Musso fue una de las figuras más relevantes del certamen junto a su compatriota Pablo “Polito” Pieres que fue goleador del torneo y sobresalió en todo el certamen. El tercer puesto o “petit finale” correspondió a Power Horse que venció a Tribune 10-9 y quinto se clasificó Marquard Media al vencer 6-3 a Technomarine.

Fue un cierre sensacional para el VIII Campeonato Abierto de Francia, instituido por el dirigente francés Patrick Guerrand-Hermes, actual titular de la Federación Internacional de Polo (FIP). ●

Domaine de Chantilly, the venue for the French Open, in a competition reserved for teams of up to 16-goal handicaps.

During the regulation five chukkas, both teams managed to get ahead and parity was the prevailing factor. Aside from the final chukka, it was only in the second period that one of the sides managed to get ahead. Jaeger LeCoultre took the lead by 3 goals to 2, having finished the first chukka level on 1 goal each.

The third chukka ended 4-4, the fourth ended 5-5 and the fifth ended with the score on 6-6, forcing the extra chukka. With a penalty score from Darío Musso, Polo de Deauville got the goal that clinched the French Open title.

Musso was one of the most prominent f igures in the competition alongside his fellow countryman Pablo ‘Polito’ Pieres, the top-scorer in the tournament and outstanding throughout.

Third place, or the ‘petit finale’, went to Power Horse, who beat Tribune 10-9; fifth place went to Marquard Media, who beat Technomarine 6-3.

It was a superb end to the 8th French Open Championships, a tournament established by the French executive Patrick Guerrand-Hermes, the current president of the Federation of International Polo (FIP). ●

El único torneo de Francia de 20 goles se juega en Deauville y la elegante ciudad balnearia se prepara para recibir en el mes de agosto a grandes jugadores de polo de varias nacionalidades.Este año el primer trofeo de la temporada, la Copa de Plata, fue para Talandracas en tanto la prestigiosa Copa de Oro quedó en manos de Emlor.

Del 19 al 31 de agosto, seis equipos muy parejos, encabezados por patrones ingleses y franceses, jugaron excelentes partidos brindando al público un espectáculo emocionante. La final, disputada en la cancha Normandie, enfrentó a dos equipos ingleses, Emlor,

de Spencer McCarthy, y Cirencester de Richard Britten Long.

Cirencester fue quién llevó la delantera por uno o dos goles de diferencia durante gran parte del encuentro pero en el último chukker Emlor igualó el marcador en 8 goles.

De esta manera forzó el chukker suplementario y logró mediante gol de oro de McCarthy llevarse el partido por 9 a 8 y consagrar a su equipo campeón de la Copa de Oro de Deauville. El tercer lugar correspondió al equipo de André Fabre, Royal Barrière, y el cuarto puesto fue para Talandracas

de Edouard Carmignac. El mejor jugador del torneo fue Glen Gilmore de Cirencester y el mejor ejemplar fue la yegua “Camila” de Santiago Gaztambide.

El arbitraje corrió por cuenta de Julian Appleby y Juan José Alberdi en tanto que la dirección del torneo estuvo a cargo de Nick Williams.

Hugues Pailloncy en francés y Glen Gilmore en inglés fueron los comentaristas de los partidos. El público quedó fascinado con las explicaciones técnicas y la simpatía de los comentaristas.

El Polo de Deauville, situado en un lugar de privilegio, en pleno centro de la ciudad y a diez minutos de la playa, cuenta con 3 canchas : Golf, Normandie y Royal, los nombres de los lujosos hoteles de la ciudad pertenecientes al principal sponsor del polo el Grupo Lucien Barrière dirigido por Dominique Desseigne.

«Hay un clima genial entre la gente que no veo hace 25 años en Deauville, todo el mundo se queda después de los partidos hasta el anochecer en los stands y todos los días hay una comida o una fiesta ofrecida por un patrón», explicó Philippe de Nicolay.

Este año la presentación de los distintos stands fue la innovación, organizados de tal manera que

el público se encontraba a gusto y se reunía para la entrega de las copas luego de los partidos en una gran carpa central, instalada especialmente para reunir a todos.

«¡Les invito a la edición 2009 porque cumplo 50 años de polo y lo vamos a festejar! El primer partido que vi en mi vida fue en 1959, me acuerdo como si fuera hoy, fue con mi tío Elie de Rothschild en la cancha Normandie para la Copa de Oro».

With a goal in the extra chukka from Spencer McCarthy, the Emlor team clinched the 2008 Deauville Gold Cup. Emlor defeated Cirencester in the fi nal and lifted the Lucien Barrière Polo Cup, reserved for 20-goal teams

France’s only 20-goal tournament is played in Deauville and the elegant seaside resort town prepares itself in the month of August to receive great polo players from around the world.

This year, the first tournament of the season, the Silver Cup, went to Talandracas, while the prestigious Gold Cup was won by Emlor.

From August 19 to 31, six very evenly matched teams, led by English and French patrons, competed in excellent matches and provided the crowds with an enthralling

spectacle.The final, held on the Normandie field, brought together two English teams, Spencer McCarthy’s Emlor and Richard Britten Long’s Cirencester.

Cirencester was in the lead for much of the match by one or two goals, but in the final chukka Emlor equalised, bringing the scores level on 8 goals each.This forced the extra chukka and with a golden goal from McCarthy they won the match by 9 goals to 8 and were crowned champions of the Deauville Golf Cup.Third place went to André Fabre’s team,

Royal Barrière, and fourth place went to Edouard Carmignac’s Talandracas.The player of the tournament was Cirencester’s Glen Gilmore and the best horse was Santiago Gaztambide’s mare ‘Camila’.

Julian Appleby and Juan José Alberdi took charge of the refereeing and the tournament was organised by Nick Williams. The commentators for the matches were Hugues Pailloncy in French and Glen Gilmore in English. The crowd were delighted with the technical explanations and warmth of the commentators.

Count Philippe de Nicolay, following three years’ absence from the chairmanship of Polo de Deauville, made a comeback of the highest order.

The organisation was perfect and the atmosphere created for the crowd was a resounding success. “I am very happy with the season; all of the professionals were delighted with the new Golf fi eld”, said Count Philippe de Nicolay to La Bocha European Polo.

“Now we can play without worrying about the weather! The investment was worthwhile in that with the rain early in the month the Silver Cup could not have been held if it hadn’t been for this new field; after 20 matches it remains impeccable and this is why in 2009 we will invest in the Normandie field”, he added.

Polo de Deauville, with its privileged location in the heart of the town and ten minutes from the beach, has three fi elds: Golf, Normandie and Royal, the names of the town’s luxurious hotels belonging to the sponsor of the polo, the Lucien Barrière Group, managed by Dominique Desseigne.

“There is a great atmosphere that I haven’t seen for 25 years in Deauville; everyone stays in the stands after the matches until nightfall and every day there is a lunch and a party offered by a patron”, Philippe de Nicolay explained.

This year the big innovation was the presentation of the various stands, organised to make the crowd feel at home and to encourage them to attend the prize ceremonies in the big central marquee, set up especially to bring everyone together.

“I invite you to the tournament in 2009 because it will be my 50th year in polo and we are going to celebrate!

I saw my fi rst match in 1959 and I remember it as though it were yesterday; it was with my uncle Elie de Rothschild on the Normandie fi eld for the Gold Cup. At fi rst I was a commentator and then I started to play, until I reached the fi nal in 2001, but we lost to André Fabre’s Royal Barrière team, with none other than Marcos Heguy in the side”, the count concluded.

Sólo existe una forma de agarrar el taco para poder controlar los diferentes ángulos y golpes. La efectividad depende del movimiento de la muñeca durante el golpe. No se debe cambiar la posición del grip cuando se realiza un revés. La posición del dedo índice también es muy importante a la hora de agarrar el taco.

Estos son varios consejos que pueden resultar útiles con el grip:

1. El taco se debe agarrar con la segunda falange de los dedos para que la palma apunte hacia el objetivo en el momento del impacto.

2. Imagine que sostiene una pistola. El índice debe tener la forma del gatillo.

3. También puede imaginar que le da la mano a un amigo. Esta misma posición se puede utilizar para agarrar el taco.

Si además juega al golf, pruebe a emplear la técnica de grip del golf.

Primero, grip la empuñadura del taco con las dos manos como si fuera un palo de golf. A continuación, deslice ambas manos hacia el extremo superior de la empuñadura. Here are different tips that might help you with your grip:

1. The middle joints of the fingers should be holding the mallet in order for the palm to be pointing at the target at the moment of impact.

2. Think of your grip as if you are holding a gun. The index finger is in the trigger position

3. Also, imagine shaking hands with a friend. It is the same position that you can use to grip the mallet.

If you are also a golf player, try using the same grip technique as in golf.

First, grab the mallet grip with both hands as you would grab the golf club. Then, slide both hands up toward the top end of the mallet grip. Finally, let the left hand go. Your right hand will be left in the exact position you need for a good polo grip. Practice this way as many times until you get the feeling of a proper grip.

GRIP PRESSUREControl is transmitted to the mallet head through your hands, but for this to be effective, your wrist and lower arm must have the correct tension. Muscle strength has relatively little to contribute to this. In reality, exactly the opposite applies. The wrist, the lower arm and the hand must collectively transmit power from the larger muscles in the back and shoulder to the mallet head within a free wheeling action. This swing will require a right grip pressure.

HOW MUCH PRESSURE?You must use the same amount of pressure you would use to squeeze tooth paste out of the tube.It would also be like holding a pigeon. If your grip is too tight, you can hurt it, but if it’s too loose, it will fly away.

WHEN THE GRIP IS TOO SMALLThe hand easily closes around the grip but the fingers dig into the palm. At impact, the mallet head may rotate, especially off-centre contact.

WHEN THE GRIP IS TOO BIGThis can cause a lack of control, and the wrist action in the swing will be inhibited. You will also have to grip too tightly to hold the mallet.

WHEN THE GRIP IS SUITABLE FOR YOUThe middle two fingers cosily fold around the grip when the grip thickness is ideal. The fingertips just meet the fleshy part of the palm, just beneath the thumb. Note: once you determine which grip size suits you, make sure to have all your mallets made or fixed to that size.

TESTING YOUR GRIPThe grip must be light not tight. A light grip enables you to make a free uninhibited swing in order to achieve head speed. To get used to the correct grip, suspend the mallet from the heel of your hand and into the INDEX finger. You will feel the weight of the head, yet the mallet will be securely placed. Then just wrap the other fingers around the handle.

TOO STRONGA strong grip will interfere with the natural swing because the arm muscles will be tight too, so therefore you restrict wrist action and shoulder rotation. If the grip is too tight you will not be able to feel the rotation of the shoulder and the swing will be mechanical and not natural. Remember that a good swing has speed, not power, and putting too much pressure on the grip will make you loose speed.

Es importante utilizar la “tirilla” de forma correcta por las siguientes razones:- Si abre demasiado la mano al golpear la bola o al enganchar a otro jugador, el taco no se le caerá.- Le servirá para no agarrar la empuñadura con demasiada fuerza ya que sentirá la “tirilla” alrededor de la mano y sabrá que el taco no está suelto.

- Cuando corra por la cancha, no tendrá que malgastar fuerzas llevando el taco en posición ya que quedará sostenido casi por completo por la “tirilla”. Suelte el grip y deje que el taco se apoye contra su mano. Se mantendrá en su lugar gracias a la “tirilla”. De este modo, conservará las fuerzas en la mano, muñeca y brazo para cuando las necesite: para golpear la bola, enganchar y demás.

¿Cuántas veces se oye a un jugador quejarse de que tienen el brazo cansado cuando sólo ha golpeado la bola un par de veces durante el chukker? Eso se debe a que estaba utilizando los músculos de la mano, el brazo y el antebrazo para mantener el taco recto. Asegúrese de que esto no le pasa y acuérdese de relajar el brazo cuando no esté golpeando la bola o enganchando a otro jugador.

THE SLINGSomeone put this piece of cotton on the mallet grips many years ago, so we had to find out how and why to use it.

1 We hang the mallet from the base of the thumb with the sling crossing the back of the hand.

2 We twist it around so that the sling shortens, and becomes firm around the hand.

3 We turn our hand clockwise and wrap it around the grip.

It is important to use the sling correctly for the following reasons:

-If you open your hand too much when you hit the ball or hook another player, the mallet will not fall off your hand.

-It will help you not to hold the grip too tightly because you will feel the sling wrapped around your hand and therefore know the mallet is not coming loose.

-When you are running up and down the field, you don’t have to waste your strength keeping the mallet in position because it can be almost entirely held by the sling. Just let the grip go and allow the mallet to lean against your hand, held in place by the sling. This way, you will save the strength of your hand, wrist and arm for when it’s needed – to hit the ball, hook and so on.

How many times have we heard players complaining about their tired arms, when they’ve only hit the ball a couple of times during the chukka? That’s because they were using their hand, arm and forearm muscles to hold the mallet straight. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you, and remember to relax your arm when you’re not hitting the ball or hooking another player.

Pero si bien cada vez son más las mujeres que se “mezclan” con los hombres en los torneos de relevancia, la realidad es que el polo femenino va haciendo su propio camino.La creación del World Women Polo Circuit, que tuvo su primera etapa a principios de año en Punta del Este y pasó por Río de Janeiro y Buenos Aires, es parte de la consolidación mencionada anteriormente.

Pero también el UK National Women´s Tournament, el Campeonato Femenino de España, el Women´s Championship Tournament en Estados Unidos y la cada vez mayor cantidad de campeonatos en Argentina, son claras muestras de que la “movida” del polo femenino es

ESPAÑA

En España, el propulsor del polo femenino ha sido el Club de Polo de Barcelona. La afición de las mujeres con el polo comenzó en el 2002 cuando Silke Oelscher, Samantha Perrusi, Laura Crosetti y Eva Campos, que formaban un equipo en Barcelona fueron invitadas para jugar un torneo femenino disputado en el Club de Polo Plaine de l´Ain en Lyon (Francia).

El 2004 también fue el año en el que se creó el Comité de Polo Femenino desde la Federación Catalana de Polo, para así dar soporte a las acciones de polo femenino en Cataluña. En el sur, el Tres Rosas Polo Club en Jimena de la Frontera (Cádiz) inauguró sus canchas en mayo de 2006 con un torneo internacional de polo femenino.

“En su quinto año de experiencia, el polo femenino en España se encuentra en un buen momento”, expresó a La Bocha European Polo, Eva Campos, iniciadora del polo femenino en España y una de las principales promotoras de actividades y torneos.

Jugadoras como Maru Giménez, Isabel de Borbón, Fabia Fernández también son motivo de orgullo para el polo femenino español y aportan, y mucho, para su desarrollo en este país.

INGLATERRA

Inglaterra es junto a Estados Unidos potencia en el polo femenino y tiene en Nina Clarkin a una de las mejores jugadoras del mundo.

Pero además de Clarkin también sobresalen jugadoras de renombre como Clare Milford Haven, Emma Tomlinson, Tamara Vestey, Victoria Grace, Erin Morgan Jones y Lucy Taylor por mencionar algunas de las más destacadas.Prueba del poderío que tiene el polo femenino en el Reino Unido es la cantidad y calidad de torneos que allí se organizan.

La pasada edición del UK National Women´s Tournament contó con la participación de 28 equipos, sí leyó bien.

Además Cowdray Park Polo, uno de los clubes de polo más importantes del mundo, recibe anualmente el British Ladies Championship.En la pasada edición el equipo de Audi, con una gran actuación de Nina Clarkin, venció a Stanford Financial Group por 7 a 4 en la final y se quedó con el torneo.

También sobresalió el desempeño de la polista Clare Milford-Haven que fue premiada como mejor jugadora del torneo.

Crack desde la cuna

Nina Clarkin es, junto a la estadounidense Sunny Hale, la mejor jugadora de polo femenino en la actualidad. Comenzó a jugar al polo a los seis años en un club de polo de Cotswold y a los 11 años ya estaba jugando al polo en Argentina y suplantando a Pablo Mac Donough

por lo cual con un bautismo así en la “meca del polo” nada de lo que lograría después podría sorprender.

A los 15 años Nina, de apellido de soltera Vestey en ese entonces, representó al seleccionado juvenil de Inglaterra con el cual jugó en Argentina, Barbados y Jamaica entre otros destinos.

Pero hizo historia en el 2003 al convertirse en la primera mujer en ganar la Gold Cup en Cowdray Park.

Y fue defendiendo al equipo de Hildon Sport junto a Mark y Luke Tomlinson y John Paul Clarkin, con quien tres años después contraería matrimonio.

“John, Luke, Mark y yo formamos Hildon Sport pensando en divertirnos pero sinceramente no teníamos muchas esperanzas de llegar lejos. Habíamos perdido partidos en la Queens Cup por razones tontas, como jugar nuestros peores caballos en el mismo chukker. Pero en la Gold Cup, cuando Milo Fernández Araújo se transformó en nuestro coach, mejoramos muchísimo y

pudimos ganar el torneo”, explicó Nina sobre la histórica consagración.

Tras la Gold Cup, Nina siguió acumulando triunfos y trofeos. En el 2004 fue premiada por la Reina, Isabel II, como ‘Best Young Player’. En el 2006 defendió al seleccionado de Inglaterra y un año más tarde jugó y ganó con su país el Campeonato Europeo, play off para el Mundial de México 2008, en Sotogrande.

La capitana de la selección inglesa de polo femenino aconseja a sus colegas, o a las que se quieran acercar al polo, que “mientras seas competitiva, los hombres te aceptan en el juego. Hay que trabajar fuerte con los caballos y mirar y aprender mucho de los mejores jugadores de polo”.

ESTADOS UNIDOS

La otra potencia del polo femenino, Estados Unidos, con Texas como punto fuerte en su práctica, tiene a Sunny Hale como su principal embajadora.

Hale lleva 19 años como jugadora profesional de polo, criadora de caballos y trainer. Además de ostentar el handicap más alto que le dieron a una mujer hasta el momento: 5 goles (en la actualidad tiene 3) es la única mujer que logró el US Open. Lo ganó con el equipo de Outback en el 2000.

Fue fundadora y preside en la actualidad el Women´s Championship Tournament. También fue fundadora y preside el American Polo Horse Association.

En su haber cuenta con participación en el US Open, CV Whitney, Abierto Femenino de Argentina y US Women´s Open, entre otros.

Pero además de Hale, también participan activamente en torneos de relevancia las polistas Melissa Ganzi y Gillian Johnston que con sus equipos de Audi y Bendabout forman parte de la temporada de alto handicap en este país.

Del Women´s Championship Tournament también forman parte jugadoras de dos goles de handicap

como Lesley Fong Yee, Dayelle Fargey, Carolina Anier y Kristy Outhier, por mencionar a las más destacadas. Las final del Women´s Championship Tournament están previstas, luego de sus distintas fases de clasificación a lo largo del año en Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Argentina y República Dominicana, para el mes de abril en Wellington, Florida.

También Florida será sede el año que viene del WCT World Cup donde estarán sin dudas las mejores exponentes del polo femenino mundial.

ARGENTINA

El mejor polo del mundo está en Argentina y los mejores jugadores son de este país. Por ello no era de extrañar que en poco tiempo el polo femenino también comience a cumplir un protagonismo importante a nivel mundial.

Si bien Argentina lleva ya un largo tiempo organizando torneos de polo femenino recién en los últimos tiempos cobró el merecido interés y se va haciendo su lugar, muchas veces “apadrinado” por las propias estrellas del polo mundial como Adolfo Cambiaso y los hermanos Novillo Astrada.

Reconocidos patrocionadores de equipos masculinos también se volcaron hacia las mujeres e incluso algunas jugadoras cuentan ya con sponsors personales, como es el caso de la prometedora polista Lía Salvo, que al igual que Cambiaso y Eduardo Novillo Astrada, es embajadora de Jaeger LeCoultre.

El impulso del polo femenino fue tal que la Asociación Argentina de Polo (AAP) cuenta con una Subcomisión de Polo Femenino que estima que ya hay más de un centenar y medio de jugadoras por lo cual en poco tiempo no es de extrañarse que Argentina también ocupará la cima del polo femenino.

argentina, María Chavanne y la mencionada Lía Salvo son prueba de la calidad polística que también tiene Argentina entre las mujeres.

“Mumy”Bellande, María Chavanne, Paola Martínez y Marcela Cerruti tienen en su haber un dato histórico y por demás curioso. Fueron el primer equipo de mujeres en ganarle a un cuarteto masculino.

El calendario anual de campeonatos femeninos va creciendo todos los años y sumándose a los ya tradicionales de El Metejón en Cañuelas, la Copa Myriam Heguy, Arelauquen, La Aguada, Jockey Club Rosario, La Macarena y Chapa Uno.

Resto del mundo

La influencia del polo femenino en Inglaterra y España ha expandido la modalidad por el resto de los países europeos y por eso hoy en día es común ver en acción a jugadoras francesas, suizas, alemanas e italianas. Paola Galantino y Stefanía Annunziata en Monte Argentario, Italia, Corinne Schuler en ST. Tropez, Francia, Yasmine Firmenich Lüginbühl y Claire Payne en el Polo Club de Veytay, Suiza juegan y trabajan por el desarrollo del polo femenino en sus respectivos países.

A fines de junio en las canchas de Domaine de la Moinerie se puso en juego el 1º Torneo Internacional de Polo Femenino en París que contó con la organización de Claudia Sorbac y Ann Rodger.

Pero la expansión del polo femenino ha sido tal que destinos no tan “conocidos” en el ambiente del polo también tienen sus torneos y embajadoras.

Recientemente se puso en juego una nueva edición del Shangai Tang Women´s International Polo en el Sinagapur Polo Club.

Cinco fueron los equipos que formaron parte del torneo, formados con jugadoras locales y también provenientes de Argentina, Estados Unidos, Nueva Zelanda y Australia. También este año, Nigeria acogió en el Chukka Polo Club (Kaduna) el primer partido internacional de polo femenino a

beneficio de UNICEF. Erin Jones de Sudáfrica, Uneku Atawodi de Nigeria , Dominique Tóense y Emma Beardshaw de Kenia son una fiel prueba de que el continente africano también tiene su destacada representación en el polo femenino mundial.

En Sudamérica la influencia del polo femenino en Argentina también viene dando sus frutos en Brasil y Uruguay. Éste último organizó semanas atrás el “Primer Torneo de polo femenino en Montevideo”, en las canchas del Carrasco Polo Club.

La organización estuvo a cargo de una de las jugadoras y grandes impulsoras del polo femenino en este país, Sofía Fernández. El torneo contó con cuatro equipos y con jugadoras de Francia, Inglaterra, Holanda, Italia, Argentina y Uruguay.

Fernández también es una de las responsables de que el polo femenino se haya paseado por Uruguay también en ciudades como Carmelo y Punta del Este. Otra de las jugadoras destacadas del polo femenino en Uruguay es también Dolores “Loli” Bunge. Loli se subió al caballo por primera vez a los 2 años y con 22 sigue cabalgando fuerte y motivada con la práctica del polo femenino.

Una experiencia como petisera en Estados Unidos la impulsó a jugar su primer torneo luego de haber estado muchos años “taqueando”. Desde que jugó su primer torneo el año pasado en Rosario no paró y es frecuente ver su nombre en los distintos equipos que disputan campeonatos de polo femenino tanto en Uruguay como en Argentina.

“Espero que en unos pocos años Uruguay sea otra opción de polo para las mujeres. Mi sueño es tener un club para hacer torneos, invitar a gente del exterior a jugar y que vengan a aprender a jugar al polo”, comenta Bunge a La Bocha European Polo.

También en la nieve

Es sabido que a las mujeres cuando se les pone algo en la cabeza es muy difícil que no logren lo que buscan o cumplan su objetivo. El polo femenino también llegó a la nieve y todos los años en un reconocido centro de ski de Argentina, Las Leñas, se juega el International Ladies Snow Polo Open que también congrega a jugadoras de varias partes del mundo y promete crecer año a año.●

for Jaeger LeCoultre.The boost to women’s polo has been such that the Argentine Polo Association (Spanish initials AAP) has a Women’s Polo Subcommittee, which estimates that there are over 150 female players, wherein it will be no surprise when Argentina also hits the top flight in women’s polo.Ann Rodger, a vet, player and member of the Women’s Polo Subcommittee of the AAP, María Bellande, currently the best female Argentine polo player, María Chavanne and the aforementioned Lía Salvo are proof of the quality that Argentina also has among its women.“Mumy” Bellande, María Chavanne, Paola Martínez and Marcela Cerruti were the protagonists of a historic moment. They were the first women’s team to beat a men’s quartet.The annual calendar of women’s championships is growing every year, with several tournaments that have already become customary: El Metejón en Cañuelas, la Copa Myriam Heguy, Arelauquen, La Aguada, Jockey Club Rosario, La Macarena and Chapa Uno.

The influence of women’s polo in England and France has spread the sport to the rest of Europe and nowadays it is common to see French, Swiss, German and Italian female players in action.Paola Galantino and Stefanía Annunziata at Monte Argentario, Italy, Corrine Schuler in St Tropez, France, and Yasmine Firmenich Lüginbühl and Claire Payne at Polo Club de Beitia, Switzerland, play polo and contribute to the development of women’s polo in their respective countries.In late June the 1st Women’s International Polo Tournament in Paris was played at the Domaine de la Moinerie fields, with Claudia Sorbac and Ann Rodger involved in the organisation.But the expansion of women’s polo has been such that less well-known destinations in the polo scene also have their tournaments and ambassadors.Recently another Shangai Tang Women’s International Polo tournament was held at Singapore Polo Club. Five teams took part in the tournament, involving local players and also players from Argentina, the United States, New Zealand and Australia.Also this year, Nigeria hosted the first UNICEF international women’s charity

polo match at Chukka Polo Club (Kaduna). Erin Jones of South Africa, Uneku Atawodi of Nigeria and Dominique Tóense and Emma Beardshaw of Kenya demonstrate that Africa is another continent in which women’s polo is represented.In South America, the influence of women’s polo in Argentina is also bearing fruit in Brazil and Uruguay.The latter organised the ‘First Women’s Polo Tournament in Montevideo’ some weeks ago, at the Carrasco Polo Club fields.The competition was organised by one Uruguay’s top players and one of its driving forces behind polo, Sofía Fernández. The tournament involved four teams, with players from France, England, Holland, Italy, Argentine and Uruguay taking part.Fernández is also one of the people responsible for Uruguayan polo having spread to other towns such as Carmelo and Punta del Este.One of the most active players in Uruguayan women’s polo is Dolores ‘Loli’ Bunge.Loli mounted a horse for the first time at 2 years of age and at 22 she continues to ride hard, motivated by playing women’s polo.An experience as groom in the United States led her to play in her first tournament after several years practicing with the stick and ball.She hasn’t stopped since she played in her first tournament in Rosario last year and her name can often be seen in the various teams playing in women’s polo championships both in Uruguay and in Argentina. “I hope that in a few years’ time Uruguay will be another option in women’s polo. My dream is to have a club in order to organise tournaments, invite people from abroad to play and for them to come and learn to play polo”, Bunge told La Bocha European Polo.

We all know that when a woman has an idea in mind it is very unlikely that she will not find what she is looking for or meet her objective.Women’s polo has also taken to the snow and every year a well-known ski resort in Argentina, Las Leñas, hosts the International Ladies Snow Polo Open, which brings together players from all over the world and looks like it will grow year after year. ●

Exhibición de lujo en St. TropezEl Habtoor Polo Team realizó en el exclusivo balneario de St. Tropez un partido de exhibición que sirvió para dar a conocer en Francia su estructura polística y su creciente interés por jugar en las grandes sedes del polo mundial, tras haber hecho lo propio en Guards, Inglaterra y Sotogrande, España.

El partido, a cuatro chukkers y 16 goles de handicap, tuvo como vencedor al equipo de Mohammed Al Habtoor por un estrecho marcador de 7 a 6, destacando la actuación del patrón. Junto a Mohammed, también tuvieron una brillante ejecutoria Justo del Carril, el polo manager del Team Habtoor, Juanjo Brané (8 goles) y Matías Nigoul (4 goles). Con el equipo de Rashid Al Habtoor se alinearon Francisco Irastorza (6 goles), Juan Martín García Laborde (5 goles) y Diego Braun (5 goles), lo que da idea del potencial de juego que hubo sobre la cancha.El espectáculo fue seguido por numerosísimo público que disfrutó con el encuentro, denominado “Al Habtoor polo Exhibition: Polo Club Saint Tropez-Deutsche Bank”, y que concluyó con un lunch para jugadores e invitados.

Tras este partido los Al Habtoor dan por concluida su gira europea de 2008 y se concentrarán en ultimar su nueva hacienda de Dubai, que quieren convertir en el cuartel general del equipo. ●

Mohammed Al Habtoor also spoke to La Bocha European Polo on what 2008 has meant for him in polo terms. “The Sotogrande season was very good; we had

a lot of fun. The thing that brought me the most satisfaction was the fact that my son, Habtoor Al Habtoor, was champion in the second tournament he played in outside of Dubai. This will give him a lot of courage and strength to continue playing and improving”, Mohammed said.

Following their successful polo season in July, the Habtoor Polo Team brought its European schedule to a close at the exclusive French resort of St-Tropez. The brothers Rashid and Mohammed Al Habtoor and their team had a strong presence at the most important venues of European polo this year, since in addition to St-Tropez and Sotogrande they were in England playing in and sponsoring the Windsor Cup.

Mohammed confirmed that the Habtoor Polo Team will continue its exhibitions and involvement in tournaments, “and the polo world will continue to know us and understand that we are working in favour of polo”.

“La Bocha European Polo covered all of our events and there will be many more over forthcoming years. We have a lot of sponsors supporting us and we want to secure long-term contracts in order continue improving the Habtoor Polo Team structure. We are committed to having a year-round team with 5- and 6-goal players, competing in tournaments around the world”, Mohammed added.

Top-notch exhibition in St-Tropez

At the exclusive resort of St-Tropez, Habtoor Polo Team took part in an exhibition match to introduce its polo structure in France and demonstrate its growing interest in playing at the world’s great polo venues, having done so at Guards in England and in Sotogrande, Spain.

The Mohammed Al Habtoor team won the 4-chukka, 16-goal match by a close 7 goals to 6, with an outstanding performance from the patron. Alongside Mohammed, there were also brilliant performances from Justo del Carril, Team Habtoor’s polo manager, Juanjo Brané (8-goal) and Matías Nigoul (4-goal). Rashid Al Habtoor’s team was made up of Francisco Francisco Irastorza (6-goal), Juan Martín García Laborde (5-goal) and Diego Braun (5-goal), giving an idea of the playing potential on the field.

The spectacle was watched by a very large crowd who enjoyed the match dubbed the “Al Habtoor Polo Exhibition: Polo Club Saint Tropez-Deutsche Bank”, which concluded with a lunch for the players and guests.

The match brought Al Habtoor’s 2008 European tour to a close and now the brothers will concentrate on completing their new estate in Dubai, which they plan to make the team’s headquarters. ●

En las próximas líneas intentaremos en

pocas palabras resumir la historia del polo en nuestro club, pero al mismo tiempo creemos importante destacar y valorar la trascendencia mundial que tiene nuestra institución y nuestro Abierto en la actualidad.

John Ravenscroft fundó el Buenos Aires

Polo Club, del cual fue presidente, antes de concretar su proyecto del Hurlingham Club. En 1892, al crearse The Polo Association of The River Plate, nuestro club se convierte en el cuartel general de este deporte en nuestro país. Después de la famosa gira del equipo argentino en Gran Bretaña y los Estados Unidos, se funda el 14/9/1922 la actual Asociación Argentina de Polo, cuyo presidente, Albert M. Hinds, también lo sería del Hurlingham Club, como consecuencia de la fusión de la Asociación de Polo del Río de la Plata y de la Federación Argentina de Polo, primera Asamblea que se llevó a cabo en el Hurlingham Club.

Con respecto a lo estrictamente deportivo, cabe mencionar que el primer partido, más bien informal, que se jugó en Hurlingham tuvo lugar en 1890 con los equipos de Santa Fe, Quilmes y Buenos Aires. Tres años más tarde comienza la Copa del Campeonato Nacional Abierto.

Se jugaba conjuntamente con la “Copa Drysdale” que tenía una dinámica muy particular. Ambas copas, de plata sellada inglesa, fueron donadas al club por J. Drysdale (h) quien las había ganado en el hipódromo de Hurlingham, cada una de ellas como resultado de tres premios en años consecutivos (seis carreras

en total). Estas copas, trofeos de las carreras de caballos, se transformaron en las copas más cotizadas del polo argentino. En los comienzos se jugaban dos partidos para “el abierto”, uno en Hurlingham y otro en Cañada de Gómez, provincia de Santa Fe. En 1893 el club estaba representado por un equipo formado por H.Scott Robson, C. J. Tetley, F. Furber y Francisco J. Balfour. En el partido decisivo, H. Scott Robson se lastimó la mano derecha y siguió jugando con la izquierda, ya que eso estaba permitido entonces, hasta que el médico le prohibió continuar. John Ravenscroft lo reemplazó y metió el último gol, adjudicándole al Hurlingham Club la primera Copa de Campeonato Abierto Nacional. Luego vinieron otros títulos en los años 1897, 1899, 1902, 1905, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1929 y 1937. Los dos últimos títulos se disputaron en el Campo Argentino de Palermo. Es mucho lo que se puede contar de todas estas victorias, pero vamos a resumir diciendo que en los primeros títulos se destacó la figura de Hugh Scott Robson que, de haber existido el handicap, hubiera sido diez goles.

En 1920 surge L.L.Lacey, el jugador más destacado de polo de su época, que participó en todos los torneos abiertos ganados por el Club, con excepción del que se realizó en 1926. La última formación campeona estuvo integrada por L. Lacey, R. Cavanagh, J. D. Nelson y Eduardo Rojas Lanusse (falleció el año pasado). Entre las numerosas copas que se jugaron en el Hurlingham Club se puede mencionar la Ravenscroft, donada por F.W. Clunie a comienzos de 1903 en memoria del fundador. Fue ganada en seis oportunidades. En la actualidad se destacan la Copa Príncipe de Gales y la Copa Princesa Máxima. El club está muy ligado a la realeza, prueba de ello es que en nuestras

canchas han jugado el Principe de Gales, Eduardo VIII, el Duque de Windsor, el Príncipe Felipe, el Príncipe Carlos y también el Maharajá de Jaipur entre otros.

También el club obtuvo la “Copa Cámara de Diputados” en 1925, 1928 y 1935 y la “Emilio Anchorena” en tres ocasiones. Otras de las curiosidades que ostenta el club, es el hecho de haber sido el primero en contar con tablas en un campo de juego en la Argentina. Esto provocó que el polo sea más dinámico y fuese fundamental para el espectáculo.

Desde los comienzos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta nuestros días el equipo Hurlingham no ha alcanzando el brillo de otrora, pero sigue participando activamente dentro de la Asociación Argentina de Polo y en algunos torneos. El último título lo obtiene en 2007 al ganar la copa principal en el Abierto de San Jorge.

El orgullo más grande del club es el Abierto de Hurlingham, considerado el segundo más importante del mundo, detrás del Abierto Argentino. Este año se disputó la 115° edición y contó con los mejores jugadores del mundo. Un lujo que el club sigue manteniendo intacto desde su creación, la de albergar a los mejores en sus dos canchas principales. ●

having brought renown to the club since its founding. Our fields have

welcomed all of the best polo players in the history of the sport, the

great classics and memorable finals which are still remembered today.

Argentine polo is intimately bound to the club, which considers itself the “cradle of the Argentine Open”. In this article we will try to summarise the history of polo at our club, but at the same time we would like to highlight and evaluate the current importance of our club and our Open internationally.

John Ravenscroft founded the Buenos Aires Polo Club, which he chaired, before finalising his Hurlingham Club project. In 1892, following the creation of The Polo Association of The River Plate, our club became the headquarters of this sport in our country. Following the Argentine team’s famous tour of Great Britain and the United States, on September 14, 1922, today’s Argentine Polo Association was founded, the chairman of which, Albert M. Hinds, was also the chairman of Hurlingham Club, as a result of the merger of The Polo Association of The River Plate and the Argentine Polo Federation, in the first meeting held at Hurlingham Club.

From a purely sporting point of view, the first match, a rather informal affair, held at Hurlingham, took place in 1890 against the Santa Fe, Quilmes and Buenos Aires teams. Three years later the Copa del Campeonato Nacional Abierto, the ‘Nacional Championships Open Cup’, began. It was played in parallel with the ‘Drysdale Cup’, which had a very unique format. Both cups, made from English hallmarked silver, were donated to the club by J. Drysdale (junior), who had won them at the Hurlingham

racecourse, both the result of three prizes in consecutive years (six races in total). These cups, initially horseracing trophies, became the most coveted prizes in Argentine polo.

In the early years just two matches were played for ‘the open’, one at Hurlingham and another at Cañada de Gómez, in the Santa Fé province. In 1892 the club was represented by a team made up of H. Scott Robson, C. J. Tetley, F. Furber and Francisco J. Balfour. In the decisive match, H. Scott Robson injured his right hand and continued to play with his left, which at the time was allowed, until the doctor stopped him from going on. John Ravenscroft replaced him and scored the last goal, clinching the National Open Championship Cup for Hurlingham Club. More titles came in 1897, 1899, 1902, 1905, 1918, 1920, 1921, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1929 and 1937, the last two of which were played at Campo Argentino de Palermo. There is much to tell about these victories, but we will summarise by saying that in the early titles the leading figure was Hugh Scott Robson who, if handicaps had existed, would have been a 10-goaler. In 1920 L.L. Lacey emerged, the most outstanding polo player of his time, who took part in all of the open tournaments won by the club, with the exception of the 1926 competition. The last championship winning team was made up of L. Lacey, R. Cavanagh, J.D. Nelson and Eduardo Rojas Lanusse (who died last year).The numerous trophies contested at Hurlingham Club included the Ravenscroft

Cup, donated by F.W. Clunie in early 1903 in memory of its founder. It was won on six occasions. The current cups are the Prince of Wales Cup and the Princess Máxima Cup. The club has close ties with royalty, evidenced by the fact that the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles and also the Maharaja of Jaipur, among others, have played on its fields.

The club also won the ‘Chamber of Deputies Cup’ in 1925, 1928 and 1935, and the ‘Emilio Anchorena’ on three occasions. Another of the club’s curiosities is the fact that it was the first in Argentina to have boards around its field of play. This made the polo more dynamic and was an essential part of the spectacle.

From the beginning of the Second World War until today, the Hurlingham team has never regained its former glory, but it continues to participate actively within the Argentine Polo Association and in some tournaments. They club won its last title in 2007, in the main cup of the San Jorge Open.

The club’s biggest source of pride is the Hurlingham Open, considered to be the second most important tournament in the world after the Argentine Open. This year the 115th competition was held, involving the best players in the world. The club has kept this magnificent tradition going since its creation, welcoming the best to its two main fields.●

¿Es consciente de lo que logró en el polo?Sí. Es lo que más le apunté en toda mi carrera y lo que me va a mantener vigente en el día de mañana, los caballos y mi organización. El jugar al polo en un algún momento se termina, pero sigue la organización.

¿Es difícil ser Adolfo Cambiaso?A veces sí porque no te perdonan nada. No podés perder, no podés jugar mal y eso no es muy agradable. Lo es en algún punto porque lo logré yo jugando, pero siempre te están probando y llega un momento en el cual ya te molesta. Seguís ganando y empieza todo de vuelta. Es todos los años lo mismo y eso te termina cansando.

¿Le resulta difícil decirle no a los compromisos?No, para mí es fácil. Pero por ahí para mis compañeros es más difícil que no juegue. Pero para mí es fácil, en determinado momento del año me decís no juego y estoy feliz.

¿Al polista lo termina de saturar la intensidad del calendario mundial?No tanto para los más jóvenes como para mí. Yo ya estoy pasado de tantas temporadas y eso te termina cansando un poco. La motivación principal es el Abierto Argentino pero a veces uno llega tan cansado que también le gusta reengancharse. Por ejemplo el año pasado gané Palermo sin estar a full.

¿Es la motivación el principal rival de Adolfo Cambiaso?Sin ninguna duda. Para mí depende mucho de lo que yo haga, lo que haga el equipo y la organización. Pero depende un poco de lo que yo pueda jugar o dar.

¿Cómo se motiva un jugador que lo ha ganado todo?Es difícil. Es la parte más difícil del polo en mi carrera actual. Siempre el Abierto te motiva, la Triple Corona nunca me importó, no es a lo que apunto. El Abierto es el objetivo y nada más. Junto con las Copas en el exterior que siempre que las juego y las quiero ganar. Pero los Abiertos de Tortugas y Hurlingham como llego muy cansado de la temporada no quiero ni empezar a jugarlos así que te puede ganar cualquiera.

¿Cómo está la estructura de La Dolfina?Está fuerte. Cada año entran caballos nuevos y siempre está fuerte. Lo hemos demostrado con hechos y con triunfos. Arrancamos más o menos y hoy tenemos una organización fuerte.

¿El buen equipo que tiene La Dolfina en la cancha también lo debe tener en la organización?Es clave. Ahí está la base del éxito y por eso Gonzalo Pieres ganó todo lo que ganó. Siempre se subió al caballo y tuvo una organización increíble que lo respaldaba y eso es para sacarse el sombrero, es tenerle una envidia sana y digna de imitarla.

¿Qué opinión le merecen lo cambios que realizaron los equipos que forman parte de la Triple Corona en Argentina?Es bueno para el polo en general pero a nosotros no nos cambia nada. A nosotros nos cambia ganar. El resto que jueguen como quieran y como puedan. Lo importante es ganar. Nosotros pensamos en nosotros no en el resto.

En el 2005 armamos el equipo con Lucas (Monteverde), Mariano (Aguerre) y Lolo (Castagnola) y con Lucas nunca habíamos jugado juntos y ganamos el Abierto. El equipo funciona o no funciona, no creo que sea de otra manera.


¿Se habló en algún momento de jugar juntos hasta determinado momento o lo van planificando año a año?Lo hablamos año a año. Mi idea es parar en algún momento, descansar un poco. Pero cada año que pasa siempre en algún punto te van convenciendo y terminás jugando. Pero lo vengo pensando hace un tiempo, no es de ahora.

¿Cree que el juego ha evolucionado?El polo cambió a través del sistema que yo fui metiendo. En su momento todos me criticaron y después terminaron jugando a lo mismo. Hay vivos que lo copiaron y les sale bien y sacan más triunfos y hay otros que juegan con otro sistema y les va peor. En Argentina fui criticadísimo y en la final del Abierto pasado (2007) se parecían ellos (Ellerstina) a nosotros y nadie dice nada. Y eso sí, me molesta porque hay ciertas cosas en la vida que hay que reconocerlas.

¿Es profeta en su tierra?Creo que sí. En mi país se me valora siempre, pero hay que ser realista. Siempre tengo que estar rindiendo examen y eso no me importa porque es normal. Pero el polo cambió en base al juego que vengo haciendo en los últimos 10 años y muchos lo copiaron y hoy se juega así. Hasta en Sotogrande, en el Mediano Handicap, hacen lo mismo.

¿Cómo ve el crecimiento del polo a nivel mundial?Yo me calenté mucho en ese sentido. En el 2002 puse una camiseta de fútbol en un equipo de polo e hice mucho más popular al deporte. Fui muy criticado por ello pero hoy me tienen que dar las gracias porque al menos en Argentina, y en parte por esa acción, el polo es un deporte más popular. Hoy los jugadores son muy conocidos, tenés sponsors personales que antes nadie los tenía, y eso es un logro personal, por más que después me digan lo que quieran.

¿Qué evaluación hace del Polo Tour en Argentina, que creó junto a Gonzalo Pieres, en sus primeros años de vida?Muy buena. Pegó y te diría que el año que viene va a estar mucho mejor. La idea es quedarme en Argentina a comienzos del año que viene para darle un poco más de manija al PoloTour. Está bueno y estoy muy contento de que se vaya superando año tras año. Vamos a tener más equipos pero todavía faltan jugadores de peso para que los patrones se arrimen y jueguen cada vez más. El Polo Tour necesita ser un poco más fuerte, pero creo que se va a lograr a corto plazo.

Su disputa coincide con la temporada de Estados Unidos, ¿ello le preocupa?Es un poco Argentina vs Estados Unidos. Para muchos europeos Estados Unidos es un plomazo y para muchos polistas lo que queremos es empujar lo nuestro y crear más puestos de trabajo en nuestro país.

El año que viene no estará en la temporada de Estados Unidos, ¿a la de Inglaterra si irá?A Estados Unidos no voy pero a Inglaterra sí, como siempre con Dubai.

¿Qué tiene Inglaterra que ningún polista le dice que no?Es un torneo muy fuerte y eso es muy bueno. La Copa de la Reina y la Copa de Oro son dos torneos muy importantes que todos quieren jugar, además es una época del año que ni Argentina que ni Estados Unidos tienen competencia.

¿Cómo encontró Sotogrande luego de tanto tiempo sin jugar aquí?Creo que desde el año 1999 no iba, así que imagínate. La verdad, lo encontré muy cambiado. En un momento pareció que las canchas de Río se iban a extrañar pero hicieron un complejo lindísimo en Los Pinos. De todas maneras Río me encanta y me gustaría que el Alto se siga jugando ahí. Que se hagan cosas en conjunto. El nivel de juego es más o menos parecido a la última vez que

vine. Por ahí ahora hay mejores caballos y organizaciones pero en nivel de juego es bueno. Lo de los 20 goles es medio mentiroso, porque las canchas están muy buenas y parecería que se juega 22 o 24 goles porque todos le pegan un poquito más.

¿Le augura un buen futuro a la temporada de Sotogrande pese a la competencia que pueda llegar a tener?Sotogrande anduvo bien siempre. Con las canchas que tienen ahora debería meter más equipos. Hoy por hoy sobran canchas para los equipos que hay, tendrían que venir más. El año que viene el Alto Handicap lo haría de 12 equipos y no de ocho. Con las canchas y la estructura que tienen, lo banca perfectamente.

¿Reduciría el calendario internacional?Personalmente lo voy a acortar el año que viene y me voy a quedar jugando el PoloTour. Es como jugar en mi casa y lo voy a hacer con Alfio (Marchini, patrón de Loro Piana) que me dio la oportunidad de quedarme en Argentina y le voy a poner todos los huevos del mundo. Porque cada vez que entro a una cancha me gusta ganar, pero lo voy a hacer en mi casa, con mi familia, con todo lo que ello significa.

¿Está contento con todo lo que ha logrado?Sí, aunque siempre querés algo más. Los objetivos nunca se terminan y siempre hay que tratar de alcanzar algo más.

Are you aware of what you have achieved in polo?Yes. It’s the thing that has been the main focus of my career and that will keep me going in the future: the horses and my organisation. Playing polo ends at some time or another but the organisation continues.

Is it difficult being Adolfo Cambiaso?Sometimes, yes. Because they don’t let you get away with anything. You can’t lose, you can’t play badly and it’s not very pleasant. Sometimes it’s enjoyable because it’s something I have achieved by playing, but they are always testing you and the time comes when it bothers you.You carry on winning and everything starts again. Every year it’s the same, so you end up getting tired of it.

Do you find it difficult to say no to commitments?No, I find it easy. But if it’s for my teammates I find it harder not to play. But it’s easy for me; if at a certain time of year you tell me I’m not playing I’ll be very happy.

Does a polo player end up getting burnt out by the intensity of the world calendar?Not so much for the younger players as for

me. I’m worn out from so many seasons and it ends up tiring you out a bit. The main motivation is the Argentine Open and at times you are so tired when you get there that it’s good to rejoin the action. For instance, last year I won Palermo without being on a full tank.

Is motivation Adolfo Cambiaso’s main rival?Without a doubt. For me it depends a lot on what I do, on what my team and the organisation does. But it depends to a certain extent on how I can play and what I can give.

How does a player who has won everything motivate himself?It’s hard. It’s the hardest part of polo at this stage in my career. The Open always motivates you, the Triple Crown has never mattered to me; it’s not what I aim for.The Argentine Open is our target and nothing else. Then there are the cups overseas; whenever I play in them I want to win.But as far as the Tortugas and Hurlingham Opens are concerned, as I’m always very tired from the season I don’t even want to start playing in them, so anyone can beat you.

How is the La Dolfina

structure?It’s strong. Every year we get new ponies and it’s always strong. We have shown this with our actions and victories. We just about managed to get it going, and today we have a strong organisation.

The good team that La Dolfina has on the field must also exist in the organisation...It’s crucial. It’s the basis for success and it’s why Gonzalo Pieres won everything that he did. Whenever he mounted a horse he had an incredible organisation behind him and you have to take your hat off to him for this; you have to have a healthy jealousy and be unafraid of imitating it.

What is your view on the changes made to the teams in the Argentine Triple Crown?It’s good for polo in general but for us it changes nothing. Winning is what changes us. The rest can play however they want, however they can. The important thing is winning. We think about ourselves, not the other teams.In 2005 we formed the team with Lucas (Monteverde), Mariano (Aguerra) and Lolo (Castagnola) and we had never played with Lucas but we won the Open.The team either works or it doesn’t; there’s no two ways about it.

Has there been talk of playing together for a certain amount of time or do you plan things year to year?We talk about it year to year. My idea is to stop at some point, to rest a little. But every year that goes by something or other persuades you, and you end up playing. But I have been thinking about it for some time; it’s not a recent thing.

Do you think the game has evolved?Polo changed through the system that I introduced. At the time everyone criticised

me and then they ended up playing in the same way. There are sharp operators who copied it and it works well for them and they win more, and there are others who play with another system and it doesn’t work so well.In Argentina I was heavily criticised and in the final of the last Open (2007), they (Ellerstina) looked like us and nobody said anything. And this does bother me because there are certain things in life that have to me recognised.

Are you a prophet in your own land? I think so. In my country I am always

appreciated, but you have to be realistic. I am always under scrutiny and it doesn’t bother me because it’s normal. But polo changed on the basis of the game I have been playing over the last 10 years; many people copied it and now it’s the way to play. Even in Sotogrande, in the medium-goal competition, they play like it.

What is your view on the growth of polo worldwide?I have been very fired up in this regard. In 2002 I put a football shirt on a polo team and made the sport much more popular.I was criticised a lot for it but now they ought

to thank me because, at least in Argentina, and in part thanks to what I did, polo is a more popular sport.Nowadays the players a very well known, you have personal sponsors which nobody had before, and this is a personal achievement, whatever they may say.

What is your view on the Polo Tour in Argentina, which you created together with Gonzalo Pieres, in its first years in existence?It’s very good. It took off and I would say that next year it’s going to be much better. The idea is to remain in Argentina at the beginning of the year to give a boost to the PoloTour.I am very happy that it’s getting better every year.We are going to have more teams but there’s still a shortage of top players for the patrons to get interested and for more and more teams to get involved.The Polo Tour needs to be a bit stronger and I think this will be achieved in the short term.

The competition coincides with the United States season; does this worry you?It’s a bit Argentina versus the United States. For many Europeans the United States it’s a bore and many of us polo players want to spur on our own thing and create more employment in our own country.

Next year you are not going to the United States season, but will you play in England?I’m not going to the US but I will go to England, as always with Dubai.

What does England have that makes every polo player unable to say no?It’s a very strong tournament, which is great. The Queen’s Cup and the Gold Cup are two very important tournaments that we all want to play in, and it’s a time of year in which there is no competition either from Argentina or from United States.

What does England have that makes every polo player unable to say no?I think the last time I was there was 1999, so you can imagine. The truth is I found it very different. I did think we would miss the Río fields, but they have set up a magnificent complex at Los Pinos. I love Río, however, and I would like the high-goal competition to remain there. Things should be done jointly.In terms of the standard of play it’s more or less like the last time I came. There are better horses and organisations now but the standard of play is good. The 20-goal thing is a bit deceptive because

the fields are very good and it feels like a 22- or 24-goal match because everyone hits faster.

Do you predict a good future for the Sotogrande season despite the competition it

could have?Sotogrande has always worked well. With the fields they have now, they should get more teams involved. Nowadays there are more than enough fields for the teams; more should come. Next year the high-goal competition ought to have 12 teams, not 8. With the fields and the structure they have, they could handle it perfectly well.

Would you reduce the international calendar?Personally I am going to cut it down next year and stay and play in the PoloTour. It’s like playing at home and I am going to do it with Alfio (Marchini, patron of Loro Piana), who gave me the opportunity to remain in Argentina, so I am going to throw everything into it. Because every time I go onto the field, I like to win, but I am going to do it at home, with my family, with everything this means.

Are you happy with everything you have achieved?Yes, although you always want more. The goals never end and you always have to strive for more.

¿Qué balance hace de la temporada europea?

La verdad que el año fue muy bueno. El 2007 fue impresionante y parecía difícil hacer algo similar en esta temporada, pero se logró y la verdad que fue muy positiva.

¿También Estados Unidos lo trató muy bien en las dos temporadas que lleva jugando?

En Estados Unidos entramos con un tremendo equipo y con una organización muy buena. Sinceramente para ser el primer año era imposible entrar mejor.Además ganamos las dos copas importantes que se juegan (US Gold Cup y US Open).

Este año fue una prueba, divertido y jugando con caballos propios.

La verdad que el resultado no terminó siendo nada malo, ya que quedamos en semifinales del US Open contra Crab Orchard, que terminó siendo el campeón.

¿La Copa de Oro de Inglaterra fue lo mejor que le sucedió en este año?

Como logro personal fue el más importante hasta ahora. La verdad que fue impresionante.

El año pasado nos habíamos quedado con mal sabor de boca por haber perdido la final y nunca pensé que íbamos a tener una revancha tan rápido.

Por suerte este año la aprovechamos y la ganamos.

En Sotogrande, con Ayala Polo Club, le faltó poco para cerrar una gran temporada en Europa.

Cierto, pero sin dudas que perdimos ante un gran equipo como lo fue Ahmibah, que se llevó la Triple Corona, algo que hace muchos años no sucedía. Te diría que el desempeño de Ayala fue bueno.

Nos costó un poco al principio, el conocernos, conocer los caballos, pero terminamos funcionando bien. Ganamos partidos importantes en la zona y luego la semifinal. En la final Ahmibah estuvo muy fuerte y nos ganó bien.

Nació en Uruguay y desde pequeño comenzó a manejar el taco y la bocha. Pero fue en

España donde hizo sus primeras armas en el polo para luego saltar a Inglaterra y el mundo

hasta cobrar una gran notoriedad en un deporte dominado por argentinos. En apenas

dos años, David ‘Pelón’ Stirling sumó los trofeos más importantes de Inglaterra y Estados Unidos y

además ya se dio el lujo de vestir la camiseta de La Dolfi na, el mejor equipo del mundo en la actualidad.

¿Cómo encara la temporada argentina, donde este año contará con un mayor protagonismo?

En Argentina todavía estoy medio tranquilo, pero mi objetivo es organizarme lo mejor y más rápido posible y terminar, ojalá, algún día jugando el Abierto Argentino.

Falta organizarme con los caballos y estamos trabajando en eso. Iñigo Zóbel (propietario del Ayala Polo Club) me está echando una mano grande con ello, Adolfo Cambiaso también me está ayudando mucho con el tema de embriones, así que de a poco nos vamos organizando.

¿La organización es la parte más difícil de toda esta historia?

La verdad que sí, llegás a un nivel en el polo en el cual la organización se transforma en lo más importante. Lo que uno tiene atrás de caballada es lo que te lleva a jugar al mejor nivel. Para que te puedan invitar a jugar en un equipo de los buenos necesitas estar bien organizado.

Primero es organizarse y luego esperar la oportunidad de alguno de los equipos fuertes para que te inviten a jugar con ellos.

¿La diferencia entre un 8 y un 10 goles de handicap pasa por los caballos?

Es una gran parte, pero lógicamente que también lo es el jugador. Vos podés estar muy bien montado pero por ahí te falta alguna cosita que no la tenés o debés mejorar. Es una combinación de las dos cosas.

¿Qué cambió en éstos últimos dos años para que llegue al nivel que tiene en la actualidad?

La organización. Cuento con caballos que me permiten competir a un buen nivel. En Europa por suerte estoy bastante bien organizado.

Pero también los equipos y compañeros de juego han sido un factor importante en mi evolución. Me han tocado equipos y compañeros de juego muy buenos. Te diría que además de la organización uno también necesita entrar en un equipo bueno y es importante aprovechar esa oportunidad.

Lamentablemente el polo en Uruguay no tiene tanta difusión como en otros países pero trato de mostrar a mi país, a través del polo, en cada oportunidad que tengo.

¿Dónde tiene sus caballos?

Tengo caballos en Inglaterra, España y Estados Unidos, de donde llevo y traigo bastante de Europa, porque no sufren.También tengo en Argentina, pero pocos.

La idea es ir dejando cada vez más para ir organizándome mejor y poder jugar a mejor nivel allá. Compro caballos donde encuentro y me gustan, pero principalmente en Argentina.

¿Tiene un equipo que lo ayuda o se maneja solo?

Tengo un equipo. Me muevo mucho con Justo, mi petisero, que hace seis años que trabaja conmigo y con Toto y Juani, que son los que me acompañan a todos lados. También mi primo Jejo Taranco, que me da una mano grande sobre todo con la organización en el Ayala Polo Club y en Argentina. Recientemente incorporé a un uruguayo, Mariano Álvarez, que me ayuda mucho. Estoy tratando de sumar uruguayos para mover en parte al polo uruguayo.

¿Le gustaría que crezca el polo uruguayo?

Me gustaría que mejore sin dudas. Poder el día de mañana organizar algo con mi padre en La Esmeralda, la estancia que tenemos en Young. Mejorar las canchas y hacer un circo lindo para el futuro.

¿Siente que es el abanderado del polo uruguayo?

Lamentablemente el polo en Uruguay no tiene tanta difusión como en otros países, pero trato de mostrar a mi país, a través de este deporte, en cada oportunidad que tengo.

También invito a amigos de Uruguay para que vean un poco la movida del polo internacional y puedan ver y aprender más sobre este deporte.

¿Si no hubiese estudiado durante tantos años en el exterior habría llegado antes a los 10 goles de handicap?

No, primero que no llegué a los 10 goles y, segundo, no creo que tampoco sea por eso. Al contrario, les agradezco a los viejos que me hayan permitido estudiar en el exterior. Hay tiempo para todo. Con 27 años todavía estoy en una buena situación como para seguir creciendo en el polo.

La verdad que la experiencia del colegio y la universidad en Inglaterra me ayudó mucho. Me ayudó para el inglés y para moverme mejor en el mundo del polo también.

¿Le obsesionan los 10 goles?

No, la verdad que no. Es un objetivo, como también lo es jugar el Abierto Argentino, pero no me obsesiona ni me vuelve loco. El tiempo dirá y si todo sigue transcurriendo dentro de

los cauces normales va a llegar, no sé si los 10 goles pero sí jugar algún día en Palermo. Si uno hace las cosas bien y es buena persona creo que las oportunidades llegan. Lo que creo firmemente es que cuando llegan hay que aprovecharlas.

¿Esas son sus premisas para moverse en un ambiente que muchos tildan de complicado y con tanta competencia?

La familia desde chico lo lleva a uno a ser así. Mis padres me han enseñado antes que nada a ser buena persona, si luego uno es buen polista, bienvenido sea. Pero ante todo lo importante es que la gente te tenga como una buena persona.

¿Cómo es para un extranjero hacerse un lugar en un deporte dominado por los argentinos?

Muy sencillo porque siempre me han dado una mano muy grande y les estoy muy agradecido por ello. Nunca me sentí extranjero en Argentina.

Uno de los que le ayudó fue Adolfo Cambiaso, ¿cómo comienza esa relación?

A Adolfito lo conozco de jugar en contra hace bastante tiempo, pero la amistad comenzó cuando me invitó a jugar con él a Palm Beach, Estados Unidos, hace dos años. Luego me invitó a La Dolfina y la verdad que me ha ayudado bastante. Me dio alguna yegua para sacar embriones, con Iñigo Zóbel le hemos comprado alguna potranca, o sea que también hay una relación comercial productiva.

¿Cómo se siente al pertenecer a una organización como La Dolfi na?

No pertenezco, estoy cerca, te diría. Pero de todas formas uno aprende mucho viendo y conviviendo con el trabajo que allí se hace.

Fue suplente de Chapa Uno el año pasado, ahora le toca

con La Dolfi na, dos de los equipos con más historia del polo argentino, ¿es consciente de ello?

El año pasado fui segundo suplente de Chapa Uno y no me tocó jugar, pero igual fue una gran experiencia y aprendí mucho. Este año estoy muy entusiasmado con La Dolfina y la verdad es que está bueno. Pero ante todo estoy tranquilo y aprovechando la experiencia que me toca vivir, luego si toca entrar a jugar mejor y si no se esperará la oportunidad. De todas formas deseo que puedan jugar los cuatro juntos (Cambiaso, Lucas Monteverde, Mariano Aguerre y Bartolomé Castagnola) y yo esperar mi turno.(NdeR: Al cierre de esta edición Stirling fue titular en La Dolfina durante el Abierto del Jockey y el Abierto de Tortugas.)

¿Ayala Polo Club también juega un rol importante en su consolidación como polista?

Sin dudas y es una relación que viene desde hace años. Comenzó con Don Enrique Zóbel y mi padre y luego se continúo con Iñigo y conmigo. Iñigo se ha portado muy bien conmigo y tenemos muchos proyectos en conjunto. Estamos moviendo bastante el tema de la cría en Argentina para en un futuro poder sacar caballos tanto para España como para Argentina.

¿Qué signifi ca pertenecer al club que ha forjado el polo en Sotogrande?

Un orgullo. Además es un placer trabajar para una gran persona como Iñigo Zóbel, que se exige y preocupa tanto por llevar lo que hace a un nivel de excelencia. A ello hay que sumarle que tengo un grupo de trabajo muy bueno, con Sebastián y Esteban a la cabeza, que se preocupan porque el club funcione de la mejor forma. Yo lo que hago es dar mi opinión, pero ellos llevan el día a día.

Viene de una familia de rica tradición polística en su país, ¿siente que el legado va por buen camino?

Está bien y espero que siga todo para adelante. El Tata (su abuelo) le dejó muchas enseñanzas a mi padre, que luego él me ha transmitido a mí.Además mi padre me puso en Europa y me hizo dar el gran salto y si logré algo es gracias a mis padres. Ellos se la jugaron al venir a Europa y nos dieron, a mis hermanos y a mí, una gran oportunidad personal y profesional.

En el polo espero poder aprovechar todo lo que me dio mi padre para luego apoyar a mi hermano Santiago, que también juega, a llegar lejos.

¿Qué objetivos tiene a corto plazo?

Más que nada seguir por el buen camino, metido en los torneos y estar bien de salud, que es lo más importante. La verdad que el Abierto Argentino seduce y quiero llegar, pero no me presiono. Creo que si uno hace bien las cosas y está tranquilo en su forma de actuar la oportunidad va a llegar. ●

What is your evaluation of the European season?

In truth it has been very good. 2007 was incredible and it was going to be hard to do better this season, but it happened and it was very positive.

Has the United States also treated you well in the two seasons that you have played there?

We went to the United States with a superb team and a very good organisational structure. The truth is that for the first year we couldn’t have done better. We also won the two most important cups up for grabs (the US Gold Cup and the US Open). This year was a trial run; it was enjoyable and we played with our own horses. In truth the result was not bad at all because we made it to the semi-finals of the US Open against Crab Orchard, who ended up champions.

What is your evaluation of the European season?

He was born in Uruguay and started with the mallet and ball at a young age. But it was in Spain that he took his fi rst steps in polo, before he went to England and the rest of the world, achieving fame in a sport dominated by

the Argentines. In just two years, David ‘Pelón’ Stirling won the most important trophies of England and the United States and also had the satisfaction of donning the colours of La Dolfi na, currently the best team in the world.

Was England’s Gold Cup the best thing that happened to you this year?

As a professional achievement it was the most important to date. It was truly incredible. Last year we were left with a bad taste in our mouths having lost in the final and I never thought we would get even so soon. Fortunately this year we took our chances and won.

In Sotogrande with Ayala Polo Club you came close to fi nishing a great season in Europe in style?

Yes. But there’s no doubt we lost to a great team, Ahmibah, which won the Triple Crown, something which hadn’t happened for many years.

Ayala’s performance was good, I would say. We struggled a little at the start, to get to know each other and the horses, but we ended up working very well together. We won important matches in the group and then the semi-final. In the final Ahmibah was very strong and we were well beaten.

How are you approaching the season in Argentina, where you will have a more important role this year?

I am on the right track in Argentina, which in truth is what I am aiming for. The aim is to organise ourselves as best and as quickly as possible and hopefully to end up playing in the Argentine Open one day.

I just need to organise the horses and we are working on this. Iñigo Zóbel (the owner of Ayala Polo Club) is giving me a lot of help with this and Adolfo Cambiaso is giving me a hand with the issue of embryos, so we are on our way to being organised.

Is the organisation the most diffi cult part of the story?

Yes, it is; you reach a certain level in polo when the organisation becomes the most important thing. The horses you have at your disposal are what take you to the top level. In order to be invited to play for one of the good teams you have to be well organised.

The first thing to do is get organised, then you just have to wait for one of the top teams to invite you to play for them.

Is the difference between an 8-goal and a 10-goal handicap in the ponies?

It’s a big part of it, but naturally it’s also about the player. You can be very well mounted but there could be some little thing you are lacking or which you have to improve. It’s a combination of the two things.

What changed over the last two years to make you reach your current level?

The organisation. I have horses that allow me to compete at a high standard. In Europe, fortunately, I am fairly well organised. But my teams and teammates have also been an important factor in my development. I have been lucky enough to play with very good teams and teammates. In addition to the organisation, you also have to get into a very good team and it’s important to make the most of this opportunity.

Where do you keep your ponies?

I have horses in England, Spain and the United States, where I take quite a lot from Europe because they don’t suffer.I also have ponies in Argentina, but not many. The aim is to have more and more horses so that I can organise myself better and be able to play at the top level over there. I buy ponies whenever I find them and like them, but principally in Argentina.

Do you have a team to help you or do you work alone?

I have a team. I work closely with Justo, my groom, who has been working with me for six years, and with Toto and Juani, who accompany me everywhere.

My cousin Jejo Taranco is also a great help, particularly with the organisation at Ayala Polo Club and in Argentina.

I recently appointed a Uruguayan, Mariano Álvarez, who helps me a lot. I am trying to take on Uruguayans to contribute to the progress of Uruguayan polo.

Would you like Uruguayan polo to grow?

Undoubtedly I would like it to improve. One day I would like to organise something with my father at La Esmeralda, the estate that we have in Young. I want to improve the fields and make a nice arena for the future.

Do you feel like the standard bearer for Uruguayan polo?

Unfortunately polo is not as popular in Uruguay as it is in other countries, but I try to show the sport to my country at every opportunity.

I also invite friends from Uruguay so that they can experience the international polo scene and learn more about the sport.

If you hadn’t spent so many years studying abroad would you have reached a 10-goal handicap sooner?

No; first because I haven’t reached 10 goals, and secondly because I don’t think it has been because of that. On the contrary, I am grateful to my parents for allowing me to study abroad.

There’s time for everything. At 27 years old I’m still well placed to continue making progress in polo.

The truth is that the experience of going to school and university in England helped me a lot. It helped with my English and also to handle myself better in the polo world.

Are you obsessed by becoming a 10-goaler?

Not really, no. It’s an objective, like playing in the Argentine Open, but I’m not obsessed and it doesn’t drive me crazy. Time will tell and, if everything goes to plan, it will happen; I don’t know about the 10 goals but I will play at Palermo one day.

If you do things well and you are a good person I think the opportunities come along. What I strongly believe is that when the opportunities arrive you have to take them.

Are these your premises for moving within a circle which many brand as complicated and very competitive?

Your family makes you who you are. First and foremost my parents taught me to be a good person; if on top of this you are a good polo player, then even better. But the most important thing is for people to know you as a good person.

What is it like for a foreigner fi nding his place in a sport dominated by the Argentines?

It’s very easy because I have always been given a very big helping hand and I am very grateful for it. I have never felt like a foreigner in Argentina.

One of the people who helped you was Adolfo Cambiaso; how did your relationship come about?

I have known Adolfito from playing against him for quite a long time, but our friendship began when he invited me to play at Palm Beach, in the United States, two years ago. Then he invited me to La Dolfina and the truth is he has helped me quite a lot. He gave me a mare or two for embryos and Iñigo and I bought one or two colts from him, so we also have a productive business relationship.

How do you feel about belonging to an organisation like La Dolfi na?

I don’t belong to it yet, although I’m close. But in any case you learn a lot from watching and being involved in the work done there.

Last year you were a substitute for Chapa Uno and now you have moved to La Dolfi na, two of the teams with the most history in Argentine polo. Are you aware of this?

Last year I was second substitute for Chapa Uno and I didn’t get a chance to play, but nevertheless it was a great experience and I learned a lot. This year I am very excited about joining La Dolfina, who really are looking very good. But above all I feel at ease and I’m making the best of the experience that has come my way. If I get to play then all the better and if not I will wait for the opportunity. In any case I want the four of them to be able play together (Cambiaso, Lucas Monteverde, Mariano Aguerre and Bartolomé Castagnola) and I will wait my turn.[Editor’s note: When this magazine went to print Stirling was in the La Dolfina starting line-up in the Jockey and Tortugas Opens].

Does Ayala Polo Club also play an important role in your consolidation as a polo player?

Undoubtedly, and it’s a relationship which has been building for some years. It started with Don Enrique Zóbel and my father and then it continued with Iñigo and I. Iñigo has been very good to me and we have many joint projects. We are doing a lot with the rearing in Argentina so that in the future we can produce ponies both for Spain and Argentina.

What does it mean to you to belong to a club which has shaped polo in Sotogrande?

It’s a source of pride. It’s also a pleasure to have worked for a person like Iñigo Nóbel, who strives to take everything he does to a level of excellence.

In addition I have a very good team, led by Sebastián and Esteban, who make sure the club works as well as possible. I give my opinion, but they are the ones who do the daily work.

You come from a family with a rich polo tradition in your country; do you think the legacy is on the right track?

It’s going well and I hope it continues to make progress. Tata [his grandfather] taught a lot to my father, and he then passed it on to me.Also my father put me in Europe and helped me make the leap; if I have achieved anything it is thanks to my parents. It was a gamble for them, coming to Europe, and they gave my siblings and I and big personal and professional opportunity. In polo I hope to be able to make use of everything my father

gave me, so that I can then help my brother Santiago, who also plays, to go a long way in the sport.

What aims do you have in the short term?

More than anything I want to continue on the right track, involved in tournaments and in good health, which is the most important thing.The Argentine Open attracts me and I want to get there, but I’m not putting too much pressure on myself. I think that if you do things well and you are relaxed in the way you behave then the opportunity will come along. ●

Una historia de polo Era verano, en Sotogrande, campeonato de polo. Era 1998, dos equipos juegan la final de la Copa

de Oro en la cancha principal de Río. El comentarista, un tal David Stirling, está entusiasmado con el juego

que está viendo . No es el último chukker pero el partido atrae la atención de todos. El arbitro pita falta,

justo en medio campo, 130 metros, y coloca una bocha nueva en el punto marcado, una bola sin ningún

golpe, completamente lisa, redonda, blanca, impecable. El número 3 del equipo que debe sacar la falta se

aleja en sentido contrario de donde están colocados aquellos dos postes que marcan la puerta, va pensando

en cómo golpear aquella bocha. Cuando cree que se ha alejado lo suficiente, gira su yegua, es pequeña,

como él, de color castaño - me encantaba ver aquella yegua correr a todo galope con su pequeñas orejas

plegadas sobre su cuello, como sabiendo la importancia de la aerodinámica -. Se acerca al trote mientras el

jinete va girando el taco, quizás ensayando el golpe que ha de dar. Sólo un jugador, sólo una yegua, sólo un

golpe y la portería a medio campo, puede que demasiado lejos y demasiado pequeña. Pero ese jugador era

Adolfo Cambiaso y eso significaba que podía pasar cualquier cosa. Golpe a la bocha y tanto, qué hermosura

de golpe.

Detrás de la portería estaba un bandera, un chaval que daba miedo

verlo moverse entre los caballos que llegaban al galope cuando terminaba

una jugada de ataque y que agitaba su bandera para indicar que la bocha

había entrado o no, un chaval que conocía este juego desde hacía sólo un

mes, cuando lo contrataron para trabajar en este torneo. Pero aquel chaval

también se enamoró del juego de Cambiaso y su yegua. Colocó otra bola

en la cancha para que continuara el juego y guardó aquella que acababa

de significar un tanto para el equipo de aquel jugador magnífico.

Aquella bola, que tenía un solo golpe, pasó todo un año en su

habitación, de adorno, sirviendo de pisapapeles o de distracción en medio de sus deberes

del colegio, hasta llegar el verano siguiente.

Fue nuevamente contratado al verano siguiente y Adolfo Cambiaso también.

Cada tarde de polo el chaval llevaba la bola en su mochila, no sabía muy bien por qué y una de esas

tardes, después de un partido, Cambiaso comentaba con otro jugador distintas jugadas y en un momento de la

conversación recordaron aquella falta que había golpeado el año anterior, 130 metros, y que había sido gol. El

bandera lo oyó, se acercó y les dijo: “ La bocha de la que habláis es ésta” y pidió que se la firmara aquel genio

“Chaval, eso sí que es afición al polo”, dijo Cambiaso, y se la firmó.

Desde entonces tengo la bola en la mesa de mi cuarto, desde entonces soy aficionado al polo , desde

entonces no falto a la cita con el polo en Sotogrande y siempre, espero ver al mejor jugador del mundo

nuevamente en Sotogrande . Los grandes siempre aportan.

La Bocha European PoloLa Bocha European PoloA polo story The year is 1998 and it’s summertime in Sotogrande as two teams play in the final of the Gold Cup in the polo championships on Río’s main field. The commentator, a certain David Stirling, is enthralled by the game that he is watching. It’s not the final chukka but the match has everybody’s attention. The referee calls a foul in the middle of the field, at 130 metres, and he places a new ball on the marked point, a ball that has never been hit, completely smooth, round, white, impeccable. The number 3 of the team taking the foul moves away in the opposite direction to the goal, thinking about how to hit the ball; when he thinks he has gone far enough he turns his mare. The pony is small, like its rider, and chestnut in colour (I loved watching that mare run at full gallop with her little ears pinned back on her neck, as though she knew of the importance of aerodynamics), and she approaches the ball at a trot as the rider starts swinging his mallet, perhaps practicing the shot that he is about to hit. Only one player, only one mare, only one shot, and the goal is half a field away: too far and too small, perhaps. But the player was Adolfo Cambiaso and this meant that anything could happen. He hit the ball and scored, and what a lovely shot it was.

Behind the goalposts there was a flagman, a lad who you couldn’t bear to watch as he moved among the horses arriving at a gallop when an attack came to an end, waving his flag to indicate whether the ball had gone in or not, a lad who had only known the game for a month when they hired him to work in the tournament. But the boy also fell in love with Cambiaso’s game and his mare. He bowled another ball onto the field so that play could continue and he kept the one with which that magnificent player had just scored a goal for his team.

That ball, which had been hit just once, spent the year in his bedroom, as an ornament, as a paperweight or as a distraction from his schoolwork, until the following summer.

The next summer he was hired again, and so was Adolfo Cambiaso.

On every afternoon of polo the lad carried the ball in his rucksack, although he wasn’t entirely sure why. On one of those afternoons, after a match Cambiaso was discussing various plays with another player and at one point reminisced about that foul which he had hit the year before, from 130 metres out, scoring a goal. The flagman overheard, approached them, and said, “the ball you are talking about is this one”, and he asked for the master to sign it. “Lad, that’s what I call being a polo fan”, said Cambiaso, and he signed the ball.

Since then the ball has been on the table in my room, since then I have been a polo fan, since then I have never missed the polo in Sotogrande and, one day, I hope to see the best polo player in the world in Sotogrande again. The greats always deliver.

omo si ello fuera poco, Santiago Moyano, el protagonista de esta historia,

se da un lujo que pocos pueden darse en cualquier disciplina deportiva: jugar al polo con su padre y su hijo.

“Mi padre tiene 70 años y todavía juega al polo. Actualmente está con Martín Aguerre y le hace caballos nuevos. Menos los domingos y lunes juega prácticas todos los días con caballos nuevos y muchas veces lo hace con mi hijo Santiago de 7 años”, comenta orgulloso Moyano. “Firmo ya si me dicen que a esa edad puedo jugar dos chukkers. Mi padre la verdad siempre fue mi ídolo y aprendí y aprendo muchísimo con él”, agrega.

Moyano comenzó en el polo con Jorge Davel, el abuelo de Lucas Monteverde, actual 10 goles de La Dolfina.

“Desde los 4 años que monto a caballo y andaba con un taquito de polo todo el día. Siempre estudié para poder jugar al polo por la tarde. En primaria

y secundaria nunca me llevé una materia porque sabía que de tarde iba a jugar al polo”. El apoyo de Jorge Davel primero y Gonzalo Pieres después fue fundamental para iniciar una rica

historia en el mundo del polo.

“Gonzalo Pieres venía con Fernando Monteverde a probar caballos y yo me metía con ellos a jugar prácticas. Ellos fueron quienes le pidieron a mi viejo para que trabaje con ellos. Desde los 15 años que me querían llevar a Estados Unidos”, relata Moyano.

A los 17 años la insistencia de Pieres

tuvo sus frutos y Moyano, tras decidir si comenzaba la carrera de Veterinaria o seguía con el polo, se fue para Estados Unidos de la mano de uno de los más grandes del polo mundial. “Recuerdo que Gonzalo Pieres me dijo: “De petisero, los tacos dejalos en tu casa”.

El destino quiso que a los pocos días cambie de rol y de cuidarle los caballos a un patrón termine jugando por él, con Pieres como compañero de equipo y ganando todas las copas de la temporada.

“Me subieron hasta 3 goles de handicap y a los tres meses volví a Argentina para trabajar en la organización de Gonzalo Pieres. Estuve con ellos hasta 1993. En tanto viajaba a Europa a jugar pero con el compromiso de que en septiembre volvía a Argentina a jugarles caballos nuevos y ayudar en la orgánica”.

Moyano define a Pieres como “un ejemplo dentro y fuera de la cancha de polo. Tuvo unos inicios muy duros y se transformó en un verdadero crack. La luchó muchísimo y se merece todo lo que tiene”.

Se crió rodeado de caballos y viendo jugar polo por lo que su futuro con el taco y la

bocha era bastante previsible. Lo que no se podía suponer es que este “trabajador

del polo” se haya transformado, en su momento, en el niño mimado de Gonzalo

Pieres y en el profesional referente de Sotogrande desde hace más de 15 años

Aparece en Bélgica, donde el polo recién se estaba armando de la mano de un uruguayo: David Stirling. La escala en Bélgica y el conocer a Stirling le permitieron aterrizar finalmente en Sotogrande, donde terminaría solidificando su carrera como profesional de polo.

“David Stirling, que también llevaba el polo de Bélgica, fue el que incentivó a mi patrona, Dorothy Hunnen, a jugar en Sotogrande. Así fue que llegué a Sotogrande en 1993. Primero armamos una sociedad con David que duró tres años. Ahí conocí también a Pelón, su hijo, que era muy chiquito, una laucha, pero ya taqueaba conmigo y le pegaba de todos lados”.

El polo en Sotogrande era muy diferente al que se vive en la actualidad. Moyano y Stirling eran los únicos profesionales y sólo existían las canchas de Río del Santa María Polo Club.

“Era una movida muy distinta, un polo muy local y que sólo en agosto se juntaban 8 equipos de alto handicap donde venían patrones básicamente de Madrid. Había también muchos patrones de Gibraltar, que me ayudaron mucho, y de los cuáles sólo

ha quedado Lawrence Isola”, recuerda Moyano.

Con el correr de los años el polo en Sotogrande fue creciendo. Aparecieron más equipos, más profesionales y se construyeron más canchas. “Ahora tenés 10 chicos de 20 años que juegan 4 o 5 goles de handicap y es más divertido, tenés más competencia y te renueva. Todavía me encuentro capacitado para competir contra ellos y hoy cuento con 8 caballos que pueden jugar el Alto Handicap tranquilamente”.

Santiago se dio cuenta que Sotogrande era “su” lugar desde que lo pisó por primera vez. “Por eso hace 15 años que estoy alli”, aclara.

“Primero por lo lindo que es como lugar, luego por la gente que me recibió y trató como si fuese de aquí desde toda la vida, en gran parte porque venía recomendado por David Stirling. Y como si ello fuera poco tenés ocho meses donde no te cae una gota de agua lo que lo hace un clima ideal para el polo”.

Son muchos los recuerdos para la gente que de una u otra forma lo ayudó para que este “trabajador del polo” se haga camino al andar.

Nombres como Quique de Bernardo, Martín Aguerre, Coque Callejas, Iñigo

Vallejo, Antonio Guiral y recientemente Javier Carabaza, “que es un gran amigo además de patrón”, explica Moyano para agregar que “por suerte mucha gente del mundo del polo me fue ayudando”.

Pero la que se lleva todos los aplausos es su mujer Natalia, “a quien agradezco haber conocido hace 10 años. Ella es un pilar y un apoyo en las buenas y en las malas y me da fuerzas para seguir adelante”.

Tuvo la posibilidad, sobre todo en Estados Unidos, de seguir subiendo de handicap, pero no era su objetivo. “Yo lo ví por otro lado, no de subir de handicap y moverme por el mundo. Mi meta era principalmente armar mi propia historia y la cumplí. Hoy tranquilamente me siento un 10 goles en mi nivel. Preferí ser de los mejores en mi nivel a ser uno más en el alto handicap. Quedarme en lo mío, triunfar hasta donde yo sabía que podía llegar y ganar mucho. Todo el mundo me dice que soy el Cambiaso del Bajo Handicap”, comenta, entre risas, Moyano. Claro que ese camino no fue nada fácil y todavía, según él mismo lo afirma, le queda mucho recorrido.

“No es solamente ponerte el pantalón blanco y entrar a la cancha de polo. Hay muchas cosas más por las que luchar. Contratos cortos donde después de 3 o 4 meses no sabés que hacer, ya que tu

familia tiene que comer, la gente que trabaja con uno, los caballos. Y qué decir de tener a la familia lejos, hace 4 meses que no veo a mi familia. Hablás por teléfono con tus hijos (tiene cuatro, entre ellos una beba de 10 meses) y te dicen “papá vení”, es duro, muy duro”, explica.

Acerca de si esa es la presión más grande que siente el polista, Moyano comentó que “la presión la vas a tener siempre, hasta estando en mi campo. Siempre quiero ir a más. Ya quiero ir preparándole caballos a mi hijo, Santiaguito, que es al que más le gusta el polo y quiero que siga mis pasos. Ama el polo y va a ser bueno”.

Pero como todo esfuerzo tiene su recompensa, Moyano cumplió su sueño de tener su estancia y su propia organización. El sueño tiene nombre propio y se llama Los Pétalos, ubicado en la localidad de 25 de Mayo, provincia de Buenos Aires.

“Para el 2009 aposté a un cambio y voy a estar más tiempo en Argentina. Quiero encargarme de mis caballos, prepararlos, venderlos y darle más importancia a la Escuela de Polo. Venir a España en Semana Santa y Agosto para jugar la temporada de Sotogrande y también jugar la temporada de Madrid.

Para ello fue fundamental Javier Carabaza, patrón del equipo los Bisontes de Santander. “Con Javier hicimos una sociedad, él se queda con todos mis caballos y me tiene cuando quiera para jugar los torneos. Él se va a hacer cargo de mi orgánica, que me iba a pesar un poco al estar afuera tanto tiempo, así yo puedo poder cumplir mi sueño de ir a Argentina a armar mi historia”.

También formó una sociedad con Iñigo Vallejo, denominada “Caballo Loco”, con el cual tiene 25 yeguas de cría, “de las mejores de Sotogrande”, y con quien tiene pensado hacer una subasta en el 2010. Finalmente, y haciendo una evaluación del camino recorrido, Moyano explicó que “la clave de todo esto fue, primero, seguir el ejemplo de mi padre y luego el de mis tres padres postizos, Gonzalo Pieres, Fernando Monteverde y David Stirling. De todos ellos saque lo mejor”.

“Después agregarle mucho sacrificio, constancia, humildad y respeto a todo el mundo, no sólo a los patrones, a todos, principalmente los petiseros, porque gracias a ellos, a nosotros, porque todavía me considero petisero, no existiría el polo y un caballo no jugaría tres chukkers y ni Cambiaso ni Pieres harían lo que hacen”.●

was that this ‘polo workhorse’ would have become Gonzalo Pieres’s

wonder child and Sotogrande’s leading professional for the past 15 years.

s if this weren’t enough, Santiago Moyano, the protagonist of this story, has the luxury that few have the chance to enjoy in any sporting discipline: playing polo with his father and son.“My father is 70 years old and still plays polo. At the moment

he’s with Martín Aguerre, preparing new horses for him. Apart from Sundays and Mondays he practices every day with the new horses and often with my 7-year-old son, Santiago”, says Moyano with pride. “I would sign up straight away if I was told I could play two chukkas at that age. My father really has always been my idol and I learned and still learn a great deal from him”, he adds.

Moyano started out in polo with Jorge Davel, the grandfather of Lucas Monteverde, the current La Dolfina 10-goaler.

“At 4 years of age I was already riding and going around with a little polo stick all day. I always studied so that I could play polo in the afternoon. In primary and secondary school I always finished my work because I knew that in the afternoon I was going to play polo”.

Jorge Davel’s support firstly, and then Gonzalo Pieres’s, were crucial to the beginning of a wonderful story in the polo world.

“Gonzalo Pieres used to come with Fernando Monteverde to try out the horses and I would join in and play practice matches with them. They were the ones who asked my old man to let me work with them. At 15 years of age they wanted to take me to the United States”, says Moyano.

At 17 years old, Pieres’s insistence bore fruit and Moyano, having decided between starting a career in veterinary medicine and continuing with polo, went to the United States in the hands of one of the greatest exponents of world polo.

“I remember Gonzalo Pieres saying to me, ‘you’re a groom; leave your sticks at home’”.But fate would have it that within a few days he would change role and from looking after the patron’s horse he ended up playing for him, with Pieres as a teammate and winning all of the cups of the season.

“My handicap went up to 3 goals and three months later I returned to Argentina to work for Gonzalo Pieres’s organisation. I was with them until 1993. Meanwhile I travelled to

Europe to play, but under the agreement that in September I would return to Argentina to play with the new horses and help with the organisation”.

Moyano describes Pieres as “an exemplary figure on and off the polo field. He had a hard life in his early years and he became a true star. He fought hard for it and deserves what he has”.

On his trips to Europe another of Santiago Moyano’s polo stories began. He turned up in Belgium, where polo had recently started to establish itself thanks to a Uruguayan, David Stirling. The stopover in Belgium and meeting Stirling finally led him to Sotogrande, where he would end up solidifying his career as a professional polo player.

“David Stirling, who also ran the Belgian polo, was the person who encouraged my patron, Dorothy Hunnen, to play in Sotogrande. That was when I came to Sotogrande in 1993. First we set up a partnership with David which lasted three years. I also met his son, Pelón, who was very young, just a kid, but he was already hitting balls with me from every angle”.The polo in Sotogrande was very different to today’s. Moyano and Stirling were the only professionals and only Santa María Polo Club’s Río fields existed.

“It was a very different scene, a very local polo, with just eight high-goal teams coming together in August, with most of their patrons from Madrid. There were also a lot of patrons from Gibraltar, who also helped me a great deal and of whom only Lawrence Isola remains”, Moyano says.

Over the years the polo in Sotogrande grew. More teams and more professionals appeared, and more fields were built. “Now there are ten 20-year-old lads playing with 4- or 5-goal handicaps and it’s more fun; there’s more competition and it revitalises you. I am still capable of playing against them and now I have 8 horses that can happily play in the high-goal competition”.Santiago realised that Sotogrande was ‘his’ place from the moment he first set foot in the area. “Which is why I have been here for 15 years”, he says.

and treated me like I had been here all my life, to a large extent because I had been recommended by David Stirling. And as if this were not enough, you have eight months in which not a drop of rain falls, which makes it an ideal climate for polo”.

Many people are remembered by this “polo workhorse” for, in one way or another, helping him to find his path.They include names such as Quique de Bernardo, Martín Aguerre, Coque Callejas, IñigoVallejo, Antonio Guiral and, recently, Javier Carabaza, “who is a great friend as well as a patron”, explains Moyano, adding that “fortunately many people in the polo world have helped me”.But the person who receives the most praise is his wife Natalia, “who I am grateful for having met 10 years ago. She is my rock through good times and bad and she gives me the strength to go on”.

He had the chance, particularly in the United States, to continue increasing his handicap,

but this wasn’t his aim. “I saw it another way: leaving my handicap where it was and moving around the world. My goal, first and foremost, was to do my own thing, and I did it. Now I feel like a 10-goaler at my level. I chose to be one of the best at my level rather than just another high-goaler. I wanted to keep doing my thing, go as far as I knew I could go, and win a lot of competitions. Everyone tells me I’m the Cambiaso of low-goal polo”, Moyano says amid laughter.

Naturally this was not an easy road to take and the man himself says that there is still a long way to go.

“It’s not just about putting on your white trousers and going on the polo field. There are many other things to fight for. Short contracts of 3 or 4 months following which you don’t know what to do, because your family has to eat, the people you work with, the horses. And then there’s the issue of being so far away from the family; I haven’t seen them for four months. You talk to your children on the phone [he has four, among them a 10-month-old baby], and they say, ‘papá, come home’;

it’s tough, very tough’, he explains.Asked whether this is the biggest form of pressure on a polo player, Moyano explains that “you are always going to have pressure, even when you’re at home. I always want more. I want to start preparing horses for my son, Santiaguito, who is the keenest on polo and I want him to follow in my footsteps. He loves polo and he is going to be very good”.

But because every effort has its reward, Moyano fulfilled his dream of having his own ranch and his own organisation. The dream is called Los Pétalos and it is located in the 25 de Mayo area, Buenos Aires province.

“For 2009 I have decided on a change and I am going to spend more time in Argentina. I want to take care of my horses, prepare them, sell them and concentrate more on the Polo School. I will come to Spain at Easter and in August to play in the Sotogrande season and I will also play in the Madrid season.

Javier Carabaza, patron of the Bisontes de Santander team, was vital to this. “I formed a partnership with Javier; he keeps all of my horses and I am available whenever he wants

me to play in a tournament. He is going to take charge of my organisation, which was going to be quite difficult with me being away for so long, so I can fulfil my dream of going to Argentina and setting up my thing”.

He also formed a partnership with Iñigo Vallejo, called Caballo Loco (‘Crazy Horse’), with which he has 25 breeding mares, “among the best in Sotogrande”, and they intend to auction the horses in 2010.

Finally, assessing the path that he has taken, Moyano explained that “the key to all of this was, firstly, to follow the example set by my father, and then those of my three pseudo fathers, Gonzalo Pieres, Fernando Monteverde and David Stirling. I took the best things from all of them.

I then added a great deal of sacrifice, persistence, humility and respect for everyone, not just the patrons, but everyone, in particular the grooms, because if it wasn’t for them, or us -because I still see myself as a groom-, polo would not exist and not even Cambiaso or Pieres could make a horse play three chukkas”. ●

Santiago Herrero, will travel to Buenos Aires on December 4, 5 and 6, where he will promote Andalusian polo

within the framework of the 115th Argentinan Open at Palermo.

During this visit to Argentina, justified by the importance, prestige and record of the Argentine polo teams and their

competitions in the sport, the chairman of the Andalusian business owners’ group will meet various representatives

of the Argentine Polo Association, polo ambassadors, local club members, politicians, businesspeople and media.

The Andalusian Business Confederation, in cooperation with the Andalusian Regional Government’s Ministry of

Tourism, Commerce and Sport, has been developing an intense programme to facilitate knowledge and experience

sharing between Andalusian companies and entities involved in sport, with people and authorities responsible for

organising major sports events.

This business visit to Buenos Aires falls within this framework in which sport is linked to quality tourism, given

that nobody can now doubt sport’s potential to become a first-rate tourist attraction in Andalusia.

This sector of the tourist industry in Andalusia has become one of the main components of our productive system

due to its ability to create jobs and wealth, because of our natural conditions, climate and heritage and thanks to

the future forecasts and development.

Within these activities, Polo, for various reasons, plays a prominent role. In fact, the sport has been played in

Andalusia since 1870, when Pedro Nolasco González of Jerez, the Marquis of Torresoto, created, on his return

from Britain, the ‘Jerez Polo Club’.

Andalucía se practique este deporte desde 1870 cuando el jerezano Pedro Nolasco González, Marqués de Torresoto, creó, a su

regreso de tierras británicas, el “Jerez Polo Club”.
