Company History

• 2001 Separate operating division set up within Motherwell Bridge.

• 2004 Management buy out from Motherwell Bridge – Metal Disintegration Services Limited was formed.

• Acquired by KSB group in march 2008 and integrated into UK Service operation of KSB Service..

How spark erosion actually works

• No force or heat is transferred to the parent part when material is being eroded.

The Spark Erosion Process

• Very low risk of damage to threads.

• Leaves tapped hole ready for a replacement stud to be inserted.

• Works on the principle of a vibrating spindle with electrical power supply creating a series of arcs occurring 120 times per second.

• Cutting takes place at the tip of the graphite electrode with 4 bar water pressure running through the centre cooling and flushing as the material is being eroded.

Workshop & faculties

• Our Workshop is used for making graphite electrodes & special tooling for customers unique needs (24 hour turnaround)

• A Strategic stock holding of graphite electrodes is held at our workshop, covering a range of sizes & shapes, facilitating fast reaction.

• We also carry out all maintenance work on our spark erosion equipment here to ensure that we supply you the customer with the most effective and reliable service possible.

• The workshop is also available for any in house spark erosion on small parts that are more manageable to transport for repair.


Benefits of using spark erosion

Gas turbine removal of blind radial bolts

• Spark Erosion is a fast and effective way of removing the blind radial bolts on any gas turbine and has been proven to be up to 5 times faster to conventional drilling.

• Minimum preparation & set up time

• Casing will be ready for lifting quicker

• Allows the customer faster access to the inside of the turbine keeping them on schedule with there outage plan.

• Minimum damage to threads leaving hole ready for replacement stud

GE workshop Dartford England (Case Study)

• Tie rods cut ready for spark erosion in order to release the seized compressor wheels.

• 4 techs with 2 machines worked on each shift day/night to complete this job resulting in GE refurbishing this rotor and returning it to the customer within the scheduled timescale they were given.

• Delighted customer


Uk power station 2012 (Case Study)• Boiler feed pump in-situ overhaul, during annual routine maintenance shut down, the BFP was the critical path item to returning the station on-line

• 16 off end cover studs seized

• Removed by MDS using spark erosion in only 4 days

• Conventional removal methods (drilling) estimated at 14 days

• Result BFP completed ahead of schedule

• Station operator benefitted from increased generation earnings due to early station on-line return.
