Gearing UpIn this chapter, students will read some new vocabulary words. Use this
“Gearing Up” activity to help get repetitions of some of the key verb structures before you begin!
Vocabulary: agarra, mirar un programa, le dice, ganar(While it is up to the teacher to decide how to establish meaning of the new vocabulary, a fast and easy way is to use the English translation with each new word. Students will be able to glance quickly at the words to confirm meaning while maintaining engagement in the story.)
Instructions: Print each of the 4 vocabulary structures on a sentence strip or white sheet of paper. Student groups of 4 should each have a copy of the four papers. Read the Vocab in Context prompts and have student groups hold up the correct word to fill in the blank. To make it competitive, just keep score!
Alternative activity: Use individual white boards and have all students write the correct answer and hold it up. Points on an individual basis and kept in the corner of the white board.
ANSWER KEY:1. Brandon agarra el teléfono de debajo del sofá.
2. La mamá de Brandon le dice: «Tus acciones son deshonestas».

Apt APPsExplain Everything: Available both free and in a paid version.
Whether you are in a 1-iPad or 1:1 iPad classroom, you can do great things with iPad apps!• For a 1-iPad classroom, you will need to purchase the correct dongle to
connect your iPad to your projector or monitor. Another option is topurchase Apple’s AirPlay software so that you can project over WiFi.
• For a 1:1 iPad classroom, students can use the application on their owndevices.
Explain Everything is another whiteboard style app that allows your students to create slide-show style doodles complete with sound recording capabilities. A huge perk of Explain Everything is that the sound recording on each slide is separate! No need to redo the whole project because of a mistake on a later slide!
Classroom uses include:• Doodle the chapter as we read. When we finish, record a summary in
the target language of what we read.• Doodle your favorite part of the chapter and record a summary of that
part.• Groups of 4-5 doodle a re-tell of the chapter and record a summary.
Groups then move table to table watching each other’s re-tells.• Doodle a character’s major decisions in the chapter and record a
summary of the action. Share the recording with a group or the wholeclass.

Social Media ShareThe idea behind the Social Media Share activities is to target ACTFL’s 5th C, Communities. How can we encourage our students to use the target language both inside the classroom and out? While it would be difficult to make a social media assignment worth points, it is not difficult to keep students engaged in posting by projecting and sharing what they post for the class. Knowing that their photos, tweets, and replies may be displayed in class is a powerful motivator.
Instagram:Instagram is a social media app that allows users to share photos and like or comment on photos of the people they follow. It is common to post a photo with one (or several) hashtags. A typical hashtag begins with the number sign (now known as the hashtag) and a few words with no spacing. For example #Brandoneshonesto (for “Brandon es honesto”) or #Brandontiraelcelular (for “Brandon tira el celular”).
Have students use the blank page below to “take a picture” of Brandon from chapter 2. In the rectangle, they should use 4 hashtags to describe what the picture shows.
To truly share these on social media (and with us at Fluency Matters), take a picture of student work and share it on your own Instagram. (no full student names, please!) Use @FluencyMatters, @placidok, @alaskabex, and @senoracmt. We try to keep current on the accounts and will do our best to reply promptly!
